The familiar tingle of energy swept over Zev as he stepped through the portal at Sky Pillar, crossing into the alien world called Lesser Megalopolis. The sight that greeted him was a familiar one: prism-shaped skyscrapers reaching toward the black void of the sky.[break][break]

As if in response, his skin split apart as dark crystals emerged across his body. Most were not visible beneath his clothing, but those that were dotted his neck, jaw, and hands in small, scattered clusters.[break][break]

In the distance, a shard of Necrozma roosted atop Lesser Megalo Tower. He couldn't see it from where he stood, but he sensed it all the same. Much like how he sensed his own shard lurking in the space between worlds.[break][break]

But Zev was not there for his patron or its smaller, less intelligent, less powerful copies. He turned instead to the person who'd traveled into Ultra Space with him, whose own patron they'd met there.[break][break]

"So how exactly are you looking for the other Tapus?" the Beast asked fern delaney. "Do you remember where you met yours?"

Their own tether to Lesser Megalopolis was a strange one–a draw that beckoned them to return. The pull had always been there, even before their link to the Tapu Koko of this world. It all started with that shard, the same one they had to wrestle from the island deity earlier just to carry it in their pocket now.[break][break]

Tapu Koko eyed traveling companion warily, perhaps because it sensed the oddity of Necrozma connected with Zev. But Fern was too preoccupied with answering the beast’s questions. Tapu Koko was an overly suspicious pigeon, anyway. Prone to bouts of ridiculous paranoia.[break][break]

Of course, Fern was willfully overlooking their own similar disposition, and their nettling thoughts regarding Kanto and declan walsh during their meeting in the Cave of Origin. It’s not relevant, after all! They were nothing alike, he and this creature.[break][break]

And yet they were everything alike. Whether Fern cared to admit this to themself or not (they did not.)[break][break]

“Sporadically, and poorly, I’m afraid,” they admitted with a forlorn sigh. “I try to make visits when possible, but until more recent reports, I wasn’t even aware the other Tapus were here.” Usually they just followed Tapu Koko, but it never led them anywhere significant. The two of them, equally as lost.[break][break]

But Fern didn’t necessarily think that was intentional on their patron’s part, either.[break][break]

If the other Tapus had spurned it, it would certainly explain the curiosity it had displayed with Tapu Fini some months ago, when they’d encountered Elisabeth Fiorelli. The curiosity, and that strange sort of longing. “Maybe they have their own turfs.” Fern shrugged. “I met it at the rundown police station on the..” Fern’s face screwed up in thought. “..the east side. But I’m fairly certain it was following me before that.”

Zev eyed the shiny Tapu Koko that regarded him with obvious caution. He knew nothing about the Pokémon except its status as a revered deity in Alola and the powers it had apparently granted its Avatar. [break][break]

At least, the ones he saw during the clash with Chien-Pao in the Cave of Origin. [break][break]

"Can it show us where it was when it first saw you? Maybe we can find some clue there," Zev asked Fern. [break][break]

He could have asked Tapu Koko directly, but instinct warned him that the Legendary Pokémon was more inclined to listen to its Avatar than to others—an assumption formed from his own bond with Necrozma.

Fern tilted his head as he looked up at Tapu Koko, brow lifting as he gestures in Zev’s direction. “Think you can do what he suggested?” In all honesty, usually the deity was more inclined to take requests from others rather than Fern – purely for the sake of being a contrarian little shit.[break][break]
But its cagey nature shifted away from being directed at Fern whenever they returned here. Instead, it was directed at the place itself, though he’d never been sure if it was because Tapu Koko wanted him to find something, or because it was just that eager to leave again.[break][break]
In any case, the island spirit complied with the request without any fuss—which felt strange, but Fern followed as it began to drift out in the vague direction of the police station.[break][break]
“Have you encountered any of the others?” Fern asked of the beast as they picked their way around scattered debris in their path. Curiously, he wondered if Tapu Koko would show interest in the subject of its Tapu siblings[break][break]
But it did not so much as glance back.

Zev shook his head as he, too, began following the shiny Tapu Koko. "My explorations have focused on Lesser Megalo Tower, and the only creatures I encountered there were Ultra Beasts and mindless Megalopolans. And the shard of Necrozma, of course." [break][break]

The distant tower loomed over the entire city, its top occasionally blinking with rare light. [break][break]

To him, the chance of encountering a Legendary Pokémon in that wasteland seemed about as slim as encountering Kyurem at the Silent Icelands. Yet both he and Fern had experienced otherwise. [break][break]

Zev wondered if there was a deeper secret of Lesser Megalopolis they still hadn't uncovered—something that attracted such powerful Pokémon to the place. [break][break]

"Have you gotten used to all your powers by now?" he asked Fern, remembering the ELECTRIC TERRAIN that had briefly paralyzed all Team Rocket's upper brass during the skirmish at the Cave of Origin. [break][break]

Fern had been a fool to fight against them then, but Zev understood the natural inclination to protect one's possessions.

They nodded as Zev clarified. A careful frown pulled their lips down. "I wonder where they're hiding, then.." That was, if there were more here apart from the reported Tapu Bulu.[break][break]
"I've only been to the tower once," they add, before curiosity won out. "What was that like? Finding the shard?" They toyed with the defunct primal shard in their hands. the one Tapu Koko had been drawn by - was that why? Because it'd mistaken it for another piece of Necrozma? Or because it thought the crystal would take it elsewhere?[break][break]
Or maybe it just wanted something shiny.[break][break]
"Some of them, for the most part." They didn't abruptly shock people or cause power outages anymore, at least. "But I do feel that mine are not..." they faltered, picking at their words, "...as strenuous to maintain as some others are proving to be." Like that all consuming, icy hatred that pulsed through jayden cross, without a calming presence. They same blinding emotion that had ripped through the Cave of Origin.[break][break]
They didn't regret their choice in the cave, though, of course. It had never been a debate or question in their mind. In fact, at that time, it had been the most in control of their abilities as they'd yet felt.

When Fern asked about the encounter with the shard of Necrozma, Zev fell silent for a moment, determining exactly what to share. The question was innocent enough, but he knew better than to assume innocence from other members of Team Rocket. [break][break]

Finally, he said, "I expected a bigger creature. From the reports of the Slateport blackouts and the Darkest Day, Necrozma is enormous. The one I encountered was a much smaller version of it. As it turned out, it was not the real Necrozma after all." [break][break]

He nodded as Fern spoke of their powers, though they shared very little actual information. [break][break]

"I see." [break][break]

Before long, they reached a building that did, in fact, resemble a police station. Zev slowed his walk as they approached, his senses on high alert for anything unusual or strange. [break][break]

Distantly, the tower flashed its light. Immediately, the muffled sound of stampeding feet filled the air, originating from inside the building. Something lurked within its walls. [break][break]

Multiple somethings. [break][break]

Black crystal crawled over Zev's skin, stopping along his jawline. Clusters of it pockmarked his cheeks. He turned to Fern and pointed at the police station's front door, his mouth forming the silent word: "Megalopolans."

It was smart to evaluate intentions before answering. Not that Fern had ill-intent in seeking out this information - they were, in this case, attempting to do no more than sate curiosity. But they also lead a tendency toward tucking away pertinent information. Stored at the ready in their back pocket - handy for whenever it might prove useful.[break][break]
"Interesting," they replied simply. Not the real Necrozma. Interesting, indeed. Though they didn't attempt to ask further as the question shifted toward their own capabilities.[break][break]
"It does seem like, though," they added after a moment, "that when I think I've got one skill pinned down, another decides to act up." But perhaps that was the nature of being The Charlatan. Mercurial down to the electricity they wielded and how..[break][break]
A constant state of shifting between different facets.[break][break]
It wasn't long before trouble found them, unsurprisingly. The crawl of black crystal captured Fern's attention briefly before they looked toward the station. It seemed in the time that had passed, the place had been overrun.[break][break]
"Unfortunate," they muttered as electricity rose to the surface of their skin, static shocks sparking off them and causing strands of their hair to lift.[break][break]
"Shall I distract them?" they asked in a low whisper before their mouth clamped shut. But even then, the wiliness in their smile crept out to play.

Zev watched the small, bright sparks of static shock crawl over Fern's skin, his curiosity piqued. Now they were past the point of conversation and theory; now it was time to witness Fern's powers in action. [break][break]

Of course, Zev was not to be outdone. As he nodded, giving his associate the go-ahead to proceed, he shifted his perception. [break][break]

Suddenly, threads shone brightly in his vision where they had not been before. And they connected to everything: the metal and stone of the ruined city, the two agents of Team Rocket, even the air they breathed.

Though equally as eager to see more of Zev’s skill set in play beyond the sparse glimpses now and in the Cave of Origin, it was admittedly easy to let the thrill of a potential fight take over. [break][break]
That was something they’d noticed of late–not an appetite for violence, exactly, but the natural chaos that could explode from a moment of conflict. As their new understanding of themself in this state grew, the more they thrived in the tumult.[break][break]
But it almost felt like their own degree of orchestrated chaos. Delegated by them, for their personal amusement, and leaving behind the fallout as soon as that uncertainty reached a peak out of their hands. A strategized whim.[break][break]
Naturally, innately contrarian at their core.[break][break]
As they zipped around the bend, more electricity flared under their feet–fanning out in a crackling pulses in the dark to snare the approaching horde in an ELECTRIC TERRAIN underfoot.[break][break]
They twisted, bright grin toothy and snarled across their face as if in friendly challenge–not for the Megalopolans, but for Zev. As blue-green eyes soaked up the sudden illumination of the beast’s own abilities kicking in, Fern found themself curious to see if he’d take control of the moment from them, or expected them to fall into the order of cooperation. Or if he could.

At the sound and brightness of the ELECTRIC TERRAIN, the Megalopolans surged from the police station building as if one writhing mass. They spilled onto the electrified ground with reckless speed. Many convulsed with spasms from the sudden shock, while more than half of them collapsed, paralyzed. [break][break]

Those that didn't continued to rampage toward Fern, arms outstretched, jaws snapping. One leaped for the admin, but it did not reach them. [break][break]

Standing in the shadow of the police station, Zev crushed the Megalopolan with his mind. It slammed into the ground at Fern's feet, bones crunching with a sickening sound. Its organs split open as its cells collapsed. [break][break]

Blood spread rapidly across metal and stone before dissolving into the air. [break][break]

"Your turn," Zev called from where he stood.

Tapu Koko danced through the throng, spurred by the pulse of Fern’s ELECTRIC TERRAIN. A blur of orange and black, accented by the flare of golden lightning as it reveled in the furor. Twitching limbs and mindless frenzy. What wasn’t felled by the shock underfoot, the patron of The Charlatan pulled down forks of THUNDER upon. Conveniently leaving Fern open for the breakaway.[break][break]

If there was any fear in Fern at that moment, they didn’t betray it. Grin still jackal-sharp, they leaned forward–hands out as if to meet the Megalopolan halfway in the steps of a dance. The flow of electricity danced brightly in their hands, ready to stun and char their quarry as soon as their fingers curled around a waiting neck–[break][break]

Only for the crazed denizen to fall short just in front of them, battered down to the pavement by Zev’s design.[break][break]

Their tongue clucked irritably against the back of their teeth, and the sharp blue of their eyes jerked defiantly upward toward the beast.[break][break]

But it seemed he was not quite done.[break][break]

A squelching sound drew their eyes downward. The seams of the Megalopolan came undone as they watched with morbid fascination. Cell matter broke apart with the unspooled undulation of organs that slowed as lifeforce ceased. Rapt, Fern’s head tilted, sharp as a noctowl’s, before jerking upward to look at Zev with the sound of his voice.[break][break]

“Well, I’m afraid I can’t outshine that,” they mused, the coy lilt of their tone impressed rather than showing any signs of disgust for the grotesque display. Their hands rose, and then they clapped slowly. Once, twice, thrice.[break][break]

Between the forks of lightning from Tapu Koko and the electricity sparking from Fern's hands, Zev had a pretty solid idea of what sort of abilities the admin possessed. The charred, sizzling, twitching bodies of the Megalopolans were a testament to their power. [break][break]

Though he deemed the clapping unnecessary, the Beast inwardly agreed: whatever Fern could do was nothing compared to what Zev could do. [break][break]

He turned away from the corpses. "Let's see if there's any sign of the other Tapus." [break][break]

Inside the abandoned police station, he strolled through rooms littered with scattered glass shards and defunct Z-crystals. When he encountered the stray Megalopolan still stuck inside, he dispatched them quickly with a crystalline tendril. [break][break]

"Find anything?" Zev called to Fern after ten minutes of searching.

The electricity sparking in Fern's palm drew Zev's gaze. The way it crackled was enticing in a way he hadn't considered before. Pausing for a moment, he snatched the electricity out of the air with his mind and absorbed it into his body. [break][break]

A small warmth flared in his chest, accompanied by an equally small amount of rejuvenation. "Thanks," he said to the admin, though his expression remained cold and detached. [break][break]

When they reconvened after searching the police station, Zev exhaled a sigh, his hands on his hips. "It's a big city, so the other Tapus could be anywhere. We can come back another day with more people. A bigger hunting party." [break][break]

After all, the more power Team Rocket had at their fingertips, the greater the advantage they had over the League. And while Zev himself was no longer interested in the petty feud between the two organizations, carrying out his plans was certainly easier when Team Rocket had the upper hand.
