"It would make my life easier, wouldn't it?" she snapped back, unfolding from her place on the couch to rise to her feet. She stalked over to the washing machine, yanking it open and angrily slamming the damp clothes in the dryer. It whirled to life, and she turned back to him, arms crossed. "Are you going to pretend you've never wanted to kill me, either?"[break][break]

For reasons she couldn't quite explain, being here left her more irritable than she wanted to admit. Everything in this quaint little ranch set her off for how normal it was.[break][break]

And she hated this fucking hoodie and its stupid League logo, which smiled up at her mockingly as she leaned against the wall.[break][break]

She stared at him with visible disdain, blowing a stray golden curl out of her face.[break][break]

He didn't realize the chord he'd struck in her.[break][break]

The tightness in her hold on herself loosened, her eyes widening slightly at the distinction he'd made -- that he could even make that distinction, really, given the emotional bleed her own patronage had instilled in her.[break][break]

"How do you know?" she challenged him sharply, and there was an insistence in this line of questioning that hadn't been there prior. It was a demand as much as it was a plea, desperate for answers. "How do you know the difference between what you want, and what Groudon wants?"[break][break]

She still struggled to understand how much of Wo-chien's wants were her own. She knew it had manipulated her, but the grudges it feasted on remained hers, and they existed long before that Ruinous Beast made itself a home in her.[break][break]

though the opportunity presents itself to criticize her, he takes the high road, showing mercy and kindness, unbecoming of the man deemed the volatile.[break][break]

"there's a difference. i don't think i can explain it even if i wanted to, but it's there, and it's enough for me to make that distinction."[break][break]

the pain that pulses from his leg is not enough to deter him from approaching but it certainly hinders him. he pushes off the couch and limps toward her, using the walls to support him along with mr. mime's PSYCHIC touch.[break][break]

when he nears Elisabeth Fiorelli, he reaches up to hold her, once again displaying kindness.[break][break]

"when your god speaks to you, what does it sound like?"[break][break]

his voice softens.[break][break]

Why did anxiety build up inside of her when he approached? As his arms moved to surround her, her body tensed in answer, as if preparing to be struck rather than embraced.[break][break]

Funny, how violence would be easier to respond to than his affection.[break][break]

"Do you really want to know?" she asked, looking up at him with blatant suspicion tinged with curiosity. Telling him too much felt unwise, she knew, but some small, lonely part of herself also felt like he might be one of the few to understand her. "Mm. Wo-chien doesn't speak to me, not with words usually. It's more..."[break][break]

She closed her eyes, letting the wall of mist in her mind thin for a moment, as she recalled her Ruinous Patron and all its misery she barely kept at bay.[break][break]

"An overflowing of resentment. It's all things I already feel, but just... aggravated like a scabbed wound, one that's forced to bleed over and over again."[break][break]

She bit her lip, unsure how much further to explore this topic, her mind distant enough she didn't consider her next words before they stumbled out.[break][break]

"I try not to let it talk to me anymore. Wo-chien, that is. But Tapu Fini is quiet, in comparison. I never know what she's thinking."[break][break]

Only as she glanced up at him did it occur to her with all the startlement of a sudden bolt of lightning: she'd not revealed her second Avatarship to him.[break][break]

Although he'd experienced Fini's mist firsthand, and with it, his own suspicions.

avatarship comes at a cost—a bitter fact that only those painfully afflicted come to know. when he thinks of the unstable, he thinks of PENELOPE LIVY, Elisabeth Fiorelli, and himself, and that makes him wonder why is it he who has been cast into this role alongside them.[break][break]

they are patrons of ruinous beings, of ENVY and GRUDGE, but he is the patron of the continental titan responsible for shaping the land they stand on now.[break][break]

why does he suffer like they do? why is his mind so fractured in comparison to the likes of kyle lopez or Eva Morales?[break][break]

his GRUDGES are suppressed in favor of tending to the person he has found himself entangled with only to be caught off guard, struck by a revelation he had suspected but never questioned.[break][break]

has he been too trusting?[break][break]

his expression wavers slightly in the pause that follows, not hurt, but more worried.[break][break]

It was simple honesty, albeit without excuse or explanation. She tried to see what reaction this response had invoked in him -- hurt? fear? betrayal? curiosity? -- before lowering her gaze from him.[break][break]

There was no use hiding it now anyway, she reasoned with herself. freya morningstar and FERNANDO SILPH weren't likely to hide this information from AQUA, and she'd given up on hiding it from declan walsh for that reason.[break][break]

"We stole Tapu Fini from your brother," she diverted. "I didn't know if that would be personal for you."[break][break]

It wasn't quite the truth, but it wasn't quite a lie either. It hinted at something beneath the surface of her words, a different doubt and apprehension she was less likely to say aloud.[break][break]

Elisabeth Fiorelli has a point. but when has he ever listened? he does what he wants and that will never change. in this instance, what he wants is to trust her, and to do that he has to overlook the secrecy.[break][break]

"What?" Elisabeth blurted out, confused by the pivot of his conversation. Was he suggesting she was jealous of Eva Morales? The idea seemed utterly absurd to her. "Why would that...? No, this doesn't have anything to do with her."[break][break]

Something interrupted her, however, and she looked down to see a Poochyena sneakily licking the back of her hand. Its tail wagged with obvious enthusiasm as it beamed up at her.[break][break]

For some reason, this was the final straw for her to bear.[break][break]

"Wouldn't it bother you?" she asked him, gesturing down to the small Pokemon as if it explained everything. "Being in my home?"[break][break]

She liked the separation. She liked the safety of the boundaries between them.[break][break]

She assumed, to some degree, he felt the same way.

finally, he lets go of her as a bark! from the little poochyena is enough to draw his attention away. unable to really bend down, he leans to the side, stretching down enough to be able to give the dog scratches on its head.[break][break]
