Zev had expected to satisfy Theo's interest with the demonstrations of gravity manipulation. Of his newest abilities, that one was easiest for him to replicate because of how much he used it on the Megalopolans and their city. [break][break]

The other two, however, were more instinctual. When he'd used them in that other universe, adrenaline had fueled their use. His body had acted on its own accord, or so it seemed. Zev was not about to rule out the notion that Necrozma may have been guiding him then, too. [break][break]

"I know of two other new powers," he said to Theo. "One allows me to summon darkness. It's not the same as my ability to absorb light." [break][break]

He paused in case the underboss wished to comment on that information. [break][break]

"The last one is purely offensive: a beam of light."

Brilliant sunlight filled the immediate area from the Scream Tail's SUNNY DAY, pushing back the gloom that hung over the ruined city like a death shroud. Zev squinted at the sudden intrusion, his eyes having grown used to the darkness. [break][break]

His first reaction was to consume the light, but that was not why Theo had ordered it made. [break][break]

Suppressing a sigh of irritation, Zev closed his eyes, trying to remember how it felt the first time he'd summoned darkness. He remembered a far-off beckoning, as if the stars themselves were calling to him. [break][break]

Standing there, he tried reaching for them with an expanded awareness, confident that was all he needed to do. "The dome of darkness first, then," he told Theo. [break][break]

In his head, Zev counted to ten. Then he opened his eyes. Nothing had changed. [break][break]

This time, he released a small, frustrated sigh. Without fail, each Avatar had expressed difficulty controlling their powers upon gaining them. Even he had unintentionally caused lights to go out before he'd practiced that ability. [break][break]

Still, he hated that he wasn't the exception to what seemed like the rule. [break][break]

"This one is trickier," Zev said to Theo—not in apology, but in explanation. "Necrozma isn't exactly providing instructions on how to replicate what I did last time."

Zev shook his head. "Not with words, no." [break][break]

He had avoided providing details of the exact experience in his report. The decision had less to do with a desire to obfuscate, though, and more to do with the fact that their connection defied description in any human language. [break][break]

"It's difficult to explain accurately. Feelings and emotions are an approximate guess, I suppose. Some things are clear, but there's a lot of static." And even that was a poor analogy. [break][break]

Zev continued to concentrate, willing the dome of darkness to appear. But the more time passed without anything happening, the more impatient he grew. Like a child seeking direction from his parent, he tuned into the very psychic link Theo had asked about and poured his agitation into it. [break][break]

Necrozma's answer came back like a yawning void. Zev suddenly felt lightyears away, his consciousness suspended in empty space. He grasped the cold distance between the stars in metaphorical hands and drew it toward his body. [break][break]

Pure blackness swallowed up the SUNNY DAY, the two men, and Theo's Scream Tail. It consumed the nearest streets and the lowest floors of the nearby buildings. [break][break]

Instantly, Zev's vision switched, revealing everything within and outside the dome in crystal clarity. He wondered if Theo could see, too, or if the blindness that could afflict his enemies also affected his allies. [break][break]

"Can you see, Beckett?" the Light-Eater's chosen asked.

The noise of surprise was all the answer Zev needed. Regardless if it came from Theo or his Scream Tail, it meant that no one else—not even those Zev deemed his allies—could see through the darkness. [break][break]

"Yeah. Which means I can't use this indiscriminately in the middle of a warzone." [break][break]

Unless he wanted to hinder his allies as much as his enemies. [break][break]

"That said, I don't know exactly how long this lasts. We should probably move to a different area, anyway. Somewhere that isn't as crowded with buildings so we have a clearer view of the horizon." [break][break]

Zev started walking to the boundary of the dome, then paused to look over his shoulder at Theo. "Do you need a hand?"

which is an absurd idea for anyone to even consider, but for someone with abilities like Zev Harcourt, it sounds almost perfect. an indestructible force breaking through enemies and their defenses should make the rest of the fight an easy victory.[break][break]

Instead of taking Theo's outstretched hand, Zev took the underboss by the arm, just above the elbow. He picked their way through the rubble until they emerged from the dome. [break][break]

Zev released Theo then, continuing forward to find a suitable location for the third demonstration. [break][break]

As for the Scream Tail, the Pokémon was on its own. [break][break]

Eventually, the group reached a block of the city that had been leveled flat. The horizon lay far in the distance, barely discernable against the black void that was the sky. Distant starts twinkled dispassionately. [break][break]

"Stay behind me for this one," Zev said to the other man as he rolled up the sleeve of his right arm. [break][break]

He hadn't used this ability since the encounter in Ultra Space, but his crystals emerged from his skin in anticipation, as if they, at least, knew what to do. [break][break]

And they transformed him, building on each other, turning his arm into a cannon-like armature of twisting, alien design. Zev's chest flared with a sudden, blazing heat. Energy surged from deep within him, coursing along his arm to gather at the hooked end. [break][break]

Black crystal covered him completely. But what neither he nor Theo realized is that Zev's body had changed on the inside, too: every cell had converted into the same black metal that formed Necrozma's body. [break][break]

Several heartbeats passed. The beam thinned and dissipated, and Zev's arm returned to its usual shape. Inside, the cells of his organs and bones reverted back to normal. [break][break]

Lying on the ruined concrete, Zev could barely muster the strength to open his eyes. Frustration flooded him at once. This sudden vulnerable state had not happened the first time he'd fired the laser, but the situation had been completely different. [break][break]

First, Necrozma had been present. Perhaps its proximity had fed Zev the energy he'd needed to finish the assault on the Megalopolan city? Fatigue hadn't hit him until after he'd left his patron's side and returned to Hoenn, but he'd assumed it was the natural—if undesired—result of using so much power at once. [break][break]

Second, he'd had months to store up energy by feeding on light before first using his laser. Comparatively, not as much time had passed before this second use. He'd been speculating that those abilities were tied in some way; the extreme exhaustion weighing on his body all but confirmed it. [break][break]

Especially since exhaustion had not been the only feeling to hit him. [break][break]

"Starving," Zev mumbled as he struggled to stand with Theo's help. A pounding migraine in his head started up. He resisted the urge to rub his temple. "And completely wiped." [break][break]

Zev's knees buckled, as if in emphasis. Gritting his teeth, he uttered a vexed, exasperated sound.

Zev shook his head, but before he could share any hypothesis, light burst forth from the top of Lesser Megalo Tower. Not only was it brighter than before, but it did not blink out right away, either. Instead, it stood as a beacon over the city, promising life and hope. [break][break]

Still clinging onto Theo, Zev turned toward it, drawn to its brilliance. The hunger in him expanded like a yawning void until he could focus on nothing else. But when he reached out a desperate hand, nothing happened. The light did not siphon into him. [break][break]

It was too far away. [break][break]

Instead, thundering footsteps filled the air, faint at first but growing louder. Within moments, the rabid cries of Megalopolans joined the noise. A horde was fast approaching, drawn by the tower's light. [break][break]

"Shit," Zev murmured, fumbling for a Pokéball at his belt.
