a week passes and he holds true to his word not only for the sake of team rocket but for hoenn, though he finds the latter far less convincing as it is not his home. he is but a mere guest here, a stranger much like he is in LESSER MEGAPOLOIS.[break][break]

awaiting the arrival of the beast, he scouts the area, observing as one would as a guest in a home that is not his. nor anyone's after the terror that is necrozma.

Despite how many expeditions Zev had taken into Lesser Megalopolis, so much of the ruined city remained unexplored. He walked down unfamiliar streets on his way to meet THEO BECKETT, his senses on high alert for any crazed Megalopolan or hostile Ultra Beast. [break][break]

Finally, he reached the rendezvous point where the underboss waited. In the distance, Lesser Megalo Tower lanced toward the sky. Its top flashed with a sudden light, then died into darkness once more. [break][break]

A faint, muffled scream from elsewhere in the city cut through the ominous silence. [break][break]

"Beckett," Zev said when he saw the other man. "What an appropriate choice of location for a field demonstration."

"Not as much as I'd like," Zev admitted. "My focus was reaching the top of Lesser Megalo Tower and obtaining whatever data I could find from the computers there." [break][break]

He gestured to the distant structure just as light shone once more from the top of it. This time, it stayed on for longer. Zev tensed with a fighter's readiness, waiting for the telltale stampede of Megalopolan feet against the ground that heralded a horde's arrival. [break][break]

But nothing approached them. [break][break]

The light from the tower went out again. [break][break]

Zev relaxed his stance, though the crystals that had emerged, unbidden, to cover much of his body did not disappear back into his flesh. When he turned his head to look at Theo, a large section of his left cheek sported the black shards. [break][break]

"What about you?" Zev asked.

That much of the city remained unexplored did not surprise Zev. Lesser Megalo Tower's importance to the Megalopolans was obvious, simply from its size and dominance over the landscape. And from his own expeditions, he knew the wealth of knowledge stored there. [break][break]

"That's fine with us. This part of the city is as good as any." [break][break]

Zev turned away from Theo to take in their surroundings. The area had been spared the worst of Necrozma's devastation; though plenty of the taller buildings had been reduced to rubble, blocking off some of the smaller streets, some of the shorter ones remained standing. [break][break]

"The power I showed you on the submarine allows me to manipulate objects. Any object. That vending machine, for example," the Beast said, focusing on the large device just a few meters away. [break][break]

He raised a hand toward it. [break][break]

"I can't describe how I'm seeing it or how exactly I'm able to change it, but the results speak for themselves." [break][break]

He clenched his hand into a fist. Metal crumpled and glass shattered as the gravity pulling on the vending machine magnified with a single thought. Then he eased back, restoring the force of gravity to normal before the machine was totally obliterated. It remained in its crumpled state, dead Z-crystals spilling out of it with a raucous clatter. [break][break]

Zev turned to Theo. "But that's not all. Throw something at me. Something you don't mind losing."

while they busy themselves with exploring more of zev's powers, theo's scream tail plays the part of their guardian. it patrols the area, keeping a close eye out on their surroundings and anything that may dare approach them.[break][break]

his gaze falls on the vending machine moments before it is reduced to a crumpled mess. he had seen the exact same happen to the glass of whiskey back at the bar but he still can't wrap his head around it.[break][break]

"i wonder what it is exactly you're manipulating."[break][break]

is it molecules in the air? space itself?[break][break]

he slips a hand into his coat before pulling out an empty pokeball. taking a step back, he tosses it at zev as though he were a wild pokemon.

As soon as Theo withdrew the Pokéball from his pocket, Zev targeted it. He lightened the planet's pull on the capsule, though Theo would not be able to feel any change with his fingers wrapped around it. [break][break]

But when the underboss released the ball, it arced into the air following the trajectory of the throw. [break][break]

Then it kept on going, rising higher and higher in a curve until it had passed over their heads. [break][break]

Zev watched it disappear into the darkness. At some point, he figured it would hit one of the ruined buildings, but after that? He had no idea. [break][break]

"I think it's gravity," he said, turning to look at Theo again.

Levitating himself—or any other person—had not occurred to Zev. Even though he'd been able to suspend an entire ship in the air above the ocean, that had only happened in the middle of its descent. He and Theo were already standing on the ground, not caught in mid-fall. [break][break]

But, thought Zev, it might work if they kick off. "It's worth a try," he said, his mind already isolating the threads of gravity that bound him to the planet. "I'll try on myself first." [break][break]

As he lessened the gravitation pull on his own body, he immediately noticed a change in his weight. He felt lighter, as if buoyed by water, but without any of its resistance. Even the motion of raising his arm was easier, the usual heaviness of the limb missing from the equation. [break][break]

Bending his knees, Zev pushed off from the ground as if he were jumping. But instead, he soared, rising into the air like an untethered balloon. Air whipped at his hair and clothes as he rushed past the darkened skyscrapers of Lesser Megalopolis. [break][break]

Before he could rise out of Theo's sight, Zev adjusted the pull of gravity on himself once more, remembering how it felt to hold a ship aloft. His ascent slowed as the force of the planet on his body increased. [break][break]

And then he stopped. His body hung in the air in perfect balance. The devastated city stretched out before him, a scabbed wound on the earth. The black sky above him glittered with stars. [break][break]

Exhilaration flooded him, and he grinned with mad delight. [break][break]

After a moment of quiet exultation, Zev allowed himself to descend at a slow and safe pace. He landed on the broken concrete without harm, then restored his gravity to normal. [break][break]

"Your turn," he told Theo, mentally adjusting the planet's hold on the underboss.

as suspected, zev possesses enough control to take advantage of the flexibility of the powers given to him. what was originally thought to be space manipiulation is now surmised as gravity.[break][break]

theo nods his head approvingly as he watches zev float back down only to be met with a suggestion far more ridiculous if only due to the difference in danger. where zev has his coat of dark crystalline armor, theo only has his SYGNA SUIT.[break][break]

he pauses, hesitating for the slightest moment before shrugging.[break][break]

"What did you say about trust, Beckett?" Zev said, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. [break][break]

Theo was right to be concerned. Zev could obliterate him with a thought. But that brought Zev zero advantage and would likely turn the whole crime syndicate against him, including declan walsh. Which was not conducive to his plans. [break][break]

So he helped the underboss jump to a reasonable height, held him there for a brief moment, then lowered him back to the ground. The gravity restored, Zev tilted his head at Theo. [break][break]

"What do you think?" he asked—of both the experience and this revelation of power.

it's a lucid feeling to be levitated, one that feels surreal as it defies logic, reason, and science, and through it all, he finds himself holding his breath, not afraid of death itself but perhaps more so of the fall.[break][break]

he sighs the moment his feet find ground again, taking a moment to catch his breath.[break][break]

"it's powerful."[break][break]

the response is delivered after a moment, followed by his thoughts.[break][break]

"i've yet to see the limit of your powers. they almost seem endless should you be able to control them better."[break][break]

he pauses.[break][break]

"you could very well decide the fate of this war within seconds. imagine, harcourt, as we march on league forces, city after city, only for you to crush them with a snap of your fingers."

Theo's words carried an undercurrent of hope and wonder. And what leader within Team Rocket wouldn't want to finish the conquest of the region in a matter of moments? Why waste precious resources when a single man could decimate the world with a mere thought? [break][break]

But Zev remembered the way Necrozma stalled and fell, vulnerable, after depleting too much of its energy. It hadn't been able to protect itself from the Megalopolans' attacks, relying instead on the curious human that carried its shards within his body. [break][break]

"That's a nice thought, if it were true," he said. "The reality is I don't know the limits to my powers yet. I told you before, I haven't had time to test them." [break][break]

And the last thing he wanted was to face an enemy without the full knowledge of what he could do—and what he couldn't.
