Johanna had to admit. She was surprised when the news of the VCT made their way to her news feed. Still,now having time to partake, she hurried to Lilycove to sign up.

Not long after she found herself at the Arena ready to fight her first opponent. And would you look at that, it was none other than the last Gym Leader she had fought against. A neat little coincidence.

“Didn’t expect to run into you here.” Johanna spoke, the Claydol floating by her side ready to jump into the Arena when the time was right.

“Yooooo! JoJo! Nice to see ya!” Navy, newest of the Elite 4, waves at his opponent. He looks cool, comfortable, totally in his element. The errant sounds of distant battle reminds him that theirs is but one of many contests. Their own little Valhalla.[break][break]
It’s wonderful. Low stakes, meaningless fights. Battle to his heart’s content. The best of the best, gathered from all over the world. What more could a man want? Practically everyone from Dewford’s here in the city, come to see the battles.[break][break]
“Been a crazy few months, huh? Sad your gym’s gone. Loved the showmanship.” Looking up at those watching the fight, he offers them a smile as well. This is, after all, a fine chance to show off for them.[break][break]
“You’ll be fighting Roland today. Roland, come on up. Say hello.” Roland, one-armed Iron Valiant, steps forward. He graces Johanna and her Pokemon with a polite, chivalrous bow. For a robot, his movements seem almost graceful. Navy starts off with style, throwing out a black orb and crowning Roland in a many-sided crown.[break][break]
He stands ready to do battle. [break][break]

“So did I! But alas time is a finite resource.” Johanna commented. Before taking a quick look out at the audience. She gave a smile and a quick wave as she recognized a few faces among the onlookers.

Then Navy introduced his partner and as always it seemed to be a formidable Pokemon. But neither Johanna nor Claydol was easily scared by a challenge. “Let’s try that new thing, Clay.” She whispered with a hushed voice to the Claydol before it could get into the Arena.

Johanna pushed aside her sleeve revealing the Dynamax Band she had recently acquired. The rock fastened to the band glowed and eerie pink hue as the energy ran into Claydol’s Pokeball. The Pokemon momentarily returned to its ball just as the sphere began to grow larger, much to Johanna’s surprise.

Maybe I ought to have tested this… She thought. But oh well, excitement got the better of her this time. And with that she threw the enlarged Pokeball into the air and from it manifested Claydol, but this time huge, gigantic some might even say.

The Dynamaxed Claydol did not hesitate to fire off an attack, but instead of the regular Future Sight came instead a MAX MINDSTORM.

Johanna could do nothing but stand and watch in awe at this newfound display of power.

Claydol grows, and grows, and grows. It stands before Roland and Navy as a modern colossus. Its power is terrible to behold. Worse yet, the audience cheers. They stand ecstatic at the sight of this great monster. This power that once kindled terror in the hearts of man now makes them cheer.[break][break]
“Roland, we’ve gotta be cheeky.” Holding out his tera orb, the Iron Valiant gives him a simple nod. Holding his blade in his one arm, he waits for the order to charge. “Give JoJo everything you’ve got. Anything less and we’re gonna lose.”[break][break]
Roland is crowned by water. Within the machine’s mind, he sees Hoenn dominated by water. He sees a Hoenn where everyone is blessed by Kyogre. It is nothing but a passing daydream, an idle thought of a world not his own. This Hoenn, the here and now, is the world for him.[break][break]
And in this world, he dances. Dashing against the tide of psychic power, he rides a wave made just for him. Riding a tidal wave up to the massive monster, he unleashes a tera blast augmented by water.[break][break]
“Glad you pulled this trick out of your hat, JoJo. Been wanting to test Roland against a dynamaxed Pokemon for months.”

“Glad to be of assistance!” Johanna replied cheerily.

Unfortunately for both Johanna and Clay it was clear that this new power was unaccustomed to them.

The Tera Blast struck true while their own attack, even with its size, failed to hit. Their next attack would have to do better than that. Still the Tera Blast didn’t seem to do a whole lot of damage, perhaps it was merely because it was the first attack of the battle, or perhaps it was some effect of the new form? She would have to figure that out during this.

“Don’t worry about getting hit, Clay! I know you can take them. Just focus on your aim!” With its size, mobility was clearly an issue, and issue Johanna figured Clay was wasting precious mental resources on figuring out how to deal with.

Clay did as he was told. It tried to stop the urge to move, and instead focused on aiming the next MAX MINDSTORM precisely.

Roland endeavors to make himself a slippery target. Never staying in one place for too long, he skids along the arena floor. He shoots up to high pillars along the edge of the pitch. There he sits, knowing the mindstorm will rock his world if it manages to make contact.[break][break]
“Imagine a whole bunch of these big guys, all bunched up together.” That was reality for everyone who was transported to Galar. Poisoned by Eternatus, titanic Pokémon threatened whole cities. Only the combined efforts of many heroes proved enough to bring these beasts low. [break][break]
Yet here stands this massive Claydol. Roland, a mere insect in comparison, readies his blade. Instead of moving in for a physical strike, he attempts a grazing hit on the dynamax barrier. The ranged tera blast clashes against the max attack. Navy sits on the edge of his seat.

As Claydol moved its gigantic body and tried to aim, it felt as if a memory returned to it or perhaps it was more of a sensation, as if he had done this before even though this was surely the first time he and Johanna had done this.

Navy urged her to imagine a whole bunch of Claydol sized Pokemon bunched together, and as she did something stirred within her. A sensation from a time long ago, in a dream. What stirred was fear, a fear of the Dynamax power.

“That’s honestly a pretty scary image.” She spoke trying to hide the fear behind cheeriness and focus on the battle.

Meanwhile the battle raged on. Growing ever more familiar with his form he tried to aim and fire the powerful strikes of MAX MINDSTORM faster, even if it meant letting the Dynamax barrier take Tera Blast hits.

“Yeah,” Navy agrees, giving her a grim nod, “it really is. But what can we do? That’s what the bosses want. Gotta keep up in the arms race.” His sigh carries with it a rare sound – reservation. Roland is trying his best, Arceus bless him. He tries to keep up with the max mind storm. His hits ping off the barrier again and again. Doubtless, he will eventually find purchase, but each cut is met by powerful retaliation.[break][break]
“All we can do is prep. Learn how it works. Band together. Never stop fighting.” Words as much for himself as for her. Roland’s heart, too, resounds with those words. Aiming to keep his distance and play a defensive battle, he once more begins bouncing across the battlefields. Moonlight gathers on the edge of his blade. He fires it off in moon blasts aimed at the barrier.[break][break]
Every little is a gain, but they can’t keep this up forever. The crowd goes crazy. It’s just another toy to many of them – another exciting facet of life during wartime.

As the battle continued in the background the two trainers conversed. Johanna listened thoughtfully to the words Navy had to share.

“I know. Even if I wish it wasn’t so.” Johanna let a sigh escape. “I know this is going to sound naive of me. But I still cling to the hope that one day we may all realize that we should not be fighting each other. We should all come together, work together to make a better life not only for ourselves but for our children and all the generations to come.” Before she knew it she had begun on a monologue of her own making. And one not only cliche but woefully naive. She knew Team Rocket would never back down, after all she still vividly remembered what the top brass of Team Rocket was willing to risk for just an ounce of power.

“I know, I know, it’s silly to cling to such notions.” She tried to preemptively wave away whatever hammer of reality Navy might desire to bring down upon her dream-nail.

The sound of a blast of energy breaking a barrier like shattered glass blasted through the arena, catching Johanna’s attention as she watched the Claydol shake and lessen in size. It seemed the power had run dry.

That didn’t mean Claydol couldn’t keep fighting though. Now in its much smaller former it was definitely more mobile. Decided to send its psychic energies into the future, aiming to deliver a sneak attack with FUTURE SIGHT as it would skirted around the battlefield trying to do its best to avoid getting into close range with the Iron Valiant.

“Wish it was that easy.” And it could be. In his estimation, people like to fight. If they were offered a perfectly peaceful world, mankind would go insane. Perhaps the Pokemon would be fine, but mankind? No. Man seeks violence for its own sake, and he knows well these violent delights meet violent ends.[break][break]
“Fight for that dream, JoJo.” The beginnings of a frown turns to resolve. Clenching his fist, he all but shouts those words at her. “I’ve said this to so many people…don’t ever lose to a world that only cares about strength. Fight for a better world. You can do that.” Everything is cliché until it happens to you. Navy doesn’t have the right sort of imagination to call what he’s saying a cliché. He speaks the words with complete sincerity, his eyes possessed by utter honesty.[break][break]
Roland limps towards the Claydol. Even though they fight on even terms once more, the machine predicts the fight isn’t going his way. One more strike and he’ll be out. One stroke. One final attack before he hits the mat. Roland channels everything he has into the this final tera blast, as if to accentuate his master’s words.

Where Johanna had been expecting hard criticism not only for her monologue but for her naivety she was instead met with sincerity and encouragement to keep fighting. She beamed a smile at Navy. Her resolve had been further strengthened even if she had, for a brief moment, been back to the old nervous insecure Johanna.

“I WILL do that.” Johanna confirmed.

Meanwhile the battle was coming to an end. One final tera blast was fired, and though it managed to hit it didn’t do a whole lot of damage. And as Claydol readied A HYPER BEAM for retaliation it realized. The opponent could no longer fight. And so though Claydol was the victor it allowed the Iron Valiant to lose with its dignity still intact.
