His expression apathetic, Zev took in his surroundings. For a simulation, the butchery felt incredibly real, all the way down to the fresh smell of blood as the butcher sliced the tail off a Slowpoke. [break][break]

"This place is disgusting," the Rocket Beast commented idly, remembering the strict regulations he'd memorized when starting up his bar. "I see about ten code violations just standing here." [break][break]

Nevertheless, he picked up a knife and approached a listless Slowpoke. [break][break]

"How do you like to eat tails, Sato?" Zev asked, holding the Pokémon still with one hand and slicing its tail off with the other. "I prefer them grilled with some salt." [break][break]

Nomi couldn't help but smile in response to Zev's blunt assessment of the simulation's first new environment. It was easy to forget that he had once run a bar and restaurant in Slateport's lower district now that he was something...far beyond the scope of the average human man.[break][break]
"I like them in stew," Nomi answered pleasantly, picking up a knife and joining him at the table. "Especially during this time of year."[break][break]
With a clinical, unbothered air, she sliced the tail off a second Slowpoke. A sudden memory of experimenting on Slowbro came to mind: one of her first trials as a newly minted Rocket, which she had volunteered for in hopes of impressing Raphael Pryde during his tenure as a Head Scientist.[break][break]
Kallistatus hovered by the simulated butcher, on the lookout for signs of the DRK Triad.[break]

Between the two of them, Zev and Nomi finished chopping the tails off the current batch of Slowpoke. The head butcher stepped outside, leaving the two Rockets to deal with the amputated Pokémon. [break][break]

Zev picked one up in both arms. It was heavy, if only because it might as well have been dead weight. "Open the door for me," he told Nomi as he walked toward the back door. Once it was open, he would drop the Slowpoke onto the back steps so it could wander off. [break][break]

The method made sense. Slowpoke were dull enough that capturing wild ones often posed zero issues. Keeping them until they grew their tails back was too costly, so releasing them back into the wild—or, in this case, the streets—was the more cost-effective solution. [break][break]

Eventually, the butcher was emptied of the Dopey Pokémon. Their remaining tails boiled in large pots for stew. Giving one of them a stir with a long spoon, Zev asked Nomi, "What's your plan for when we encounter the DRK Triad again?" [break][break]

Nomi assisted Zev with releasing the Slowpoke, holding the door open as he tipped them out onto the street. When the task was finished, she walked over to a grimy sink to wash her hands. It wasn't so much that she'd actually dirtied them with anything tangible: she often found herself in labs, where sanitation was a requirement - and therefore, a habit.[break][break]
"Capture them. Win over any Unown in their possession so they cannot escape via teleportation. Interrogate them," she answered simply. "When I'm satisfied with the information gathered, you may kill them."[break][break]
Which is what he wanted, she knew.[break][break]
The simulation rippled, pixels rearranging subtly, just enough to inform Nomi that this scene would end soon.[break][break]
"Kallistatus and I have been working on fine-tuning a Z-move I am hoping to use against the DRK Triad," she added with a hint of pride. "But first, we need to attract their attention."[break][break]
The butchery around them dissolved, re-shaping into a more natural landscape. Nomi immediately recognized the familiar glow of illumina energy, piquing her interest.[break][break]

Zev was about to point out that Nomi's plan was too vague to be of any actual use, but when she mentioned the Z-move, he tilted his head in curiosity. "What is the Z-move supposed to do?" he asked. [break][break]

The scene around them rippled and changed. As he waited for his associate's reply, he scanned their surroundings. Nothing stood out to him as a threat, so he focused on the first object to immediately grab his attention. [break][break]

The Shadow Persian looked near death. Regarding it with an impassive gaze, Zev stood over it. "This Pokémon is going to die very soon," he told Nomi as he watched its slow and labored breathing. "Better to leave it and explore the rest of this area." [break][break]

He turned away from the Pokémon and looked out over the glittering lake. Strangely, its waters seemed to beckon at him, as if it promised treasure in its depth. [break][break]

Nomi grinned, the excitement plain on her face.[break][break]
"It's a dimension of my own making!" She declared, unable to withhold the pride from her tone. Beside her, Kallistatus turned its singular, unblinking eye on the suffering Shadow Persian withering beneath Zev's scrutinizing gaze.[break][break]
"We used the fundamental properties of the Unown Dimension as our base, but with added personal boundaries," she explained, though she doubted Zev would understand the intricacies of the scientific experiment. "In short: we should be able to trap members of the DRK Triad within it, and, for a short period of time, they should not be able to easily escape."[break][break]
Drawn to the water, Nomi followed Zev to the shoreline. She stared out at the peaceful sight, the labored breathing of the injured Persian fading into just another unimportant background noise. A compulsion to jump into the water gripped her, and she couldn't help but remember another lake, groping hands and hungry mouths, an ecstasy long-dreamt of, a feeling of coming home.

You don't know why, but you attempt to swim deeper and deeper, the pressure in your ears building with every threshold of depth crossed.[break][break]

Your lungs grow tight. Your thinking grows hazy. However, at the bottom of the lake, you see a small sprite-like form: Azelf. The Being of Willpower remains suspended in the depths of this lake, nursing its injuries. However, its body is limp. Its eyes are closed. It does not stir.[break][break]

As you near, you feel your body begin to slow. What determination you once had fades dramatically before you take a lungful of water.[break][break]

In a past lifetime, Zev would have found Nomi's words preposterous. But at that point, he had seen too much and knew too much to dismiss her idea entirely. [break][break]

"Hopefully we can put that Z-move to the test soon," he said as they moved toward the lake. He entered it first, wading until the water was up to his waist, then diving. The icy coldness hit him like a wall, even with the light stored in his body. [break][break]

Deeper and deeper Zev swam, convinced that something awaited him at the bottom. He kept going even when the water's pressure against him started growing uncomfortable, even when his lungs burned with the need for air. [break][break]

And then he saw it: a small Pokémon encased in softly glowing light. It seemed asleep. Zev reached for it, but at that moment, his lungs gave out. [break][break]

Crystal rushed across his body to protect him, but then the world went black. [break][break]

When Zev did not immediately surface, Nomi began to grow curious. When seconds turned to minutes, curiosity became concern.[break][break]
Giving into the tugging sensation, the urge to join him beneath the surface, she walked into the lake, impressed - not for the first time - with the realistic quality of the simulation. The water was frigid, and her skirt floated up around her as if she were truly going for a swim.[break][break]
Sucking in a big breath, she dunked her head and began to swim down. She wasn't entirely sure where Zev had gone, but the deeper she swam the more certain she became that she was indeed heading in the right direction.[break][break]
Pressure made her ears pop as she neared the bottom of the lake. A great weight bore down upon her, attempting to squeeze the breath from her lungs. Some small, glowing shape caught her attention, serenely suspended, and she headed towards it even as the world around her began to fade to black. Before her vision cut out, she was able to identify the creature: Azelf.[break][break]
Her first thought was decisions take willpower and then - where is this lake, exactly? - and then she lost consciousness. [break][break]

[attr="class","itemcoltext"]Team Rocket has traversed the simulation an innumerous amount of times. By doing so, they have been lucky enough to access a new stage: one that finally grants them answers as to Arceus’ whereabouts—and perhaps frustratingly, more questions.[break][break]

After the transition, you find yourself on an endless staircase. Each step glows bright with divine light. Gazing down at your feet, you realize the stair treads are transparent. Vertigo grips your stomach as you realize you are at an impossible height—but beneath you is what appears to be an endless void. If Hoenn was below you, it is so far away that it would be an indiscernible speck.[break][break]

As he took in a great lungful of air, Zev's eyes snapped open. His immediate surroundings were startling, unexpected: a golden, glowing staircase surrounded by an endless void.[break][break]

And while the presence of impenetrable darkness did not phase him, the endless staircase stirred an instinctive caution in him. Somehow, the animal part of his brain understood that something incomprehensible waited at the top.[break][break]

Nomi barely registered Zev speaking. In fact, everything else melted away as her eyes locked onto the grand staircase, each step a thing of translucent beauty, a massive endless pillar glowing with the same light of creation she had seen in the vision gifted to her on the day the Unown had made her their Avatar.[break][break]
"The Ascended Hall of Origin," she breathed, awed beyond belief.[break][break]
Then she broke out into a run.[break][break]
Nomi was not an athlete, her thighs burning as she raced up the stairs, but adrenaline and frantically beating heart fueled her hasty ascent. The simulation could crumble at any moment: this was her chance to finally find Arceus.[break][break]
