After a solid ten seconds or so of uninterrupted savagery, the Sableye finally detaches itself from your face, lured away by the promise of a glint and a gleam in the dark of the cave. The greedy ghost scurries off, eager to claim fresh treasure to renew its much-plundered hoard. You, meanwhile, are left with copious amounts of blood trickling down your head. The good news is, your wounds are fairly shallow. The bad news is, you've sure got a lot of them. Your skin-to-cut ratio is hitting record lows.

But you'll survive. Because you've experienced far worse pain than this before, and you'll face far worse in the days to come. Because your flesh might be weak like paper, but your resolve is strong like steel. And, most importantly of all, because a girl is watching, and you really can't afford to look worse than you already do.

"Arceus wept, that was... Not good..." You groan, your hands gingerly reaching up to try and feel out the full extent of the damage. "How do I look, Drilliam? Is it bad?"

"Let me see." The mole takes a few steps closer to your, eyes squinting as it examines your injuries, before taking a few steps back and nodding. "Yep, that's bad, alright. Ugliest face I ever did see."

"Shit, really...?!"

"And on top of that, you're cut up to hell and back, too."

...Son of a bitch...

You breath a heavy sigh as your turn your attention back to the Sableye. Then, you breathe a much lighter sigh when you find said Sableye caught in a trance, standing amidst the ephemeral haze, completely and utterly transfixed by the Tera Shard in its claws. Seems like he's just as susceptible to the effects of the Dream Mist as you are, huh? As much as you're tempted to take advantage of its distraction and punt it across the cave, you decide to leave well enough alone. In its current state, its all but neutralised, and you've got better things to do than punishing a wild beast for acting on its instincts.

Like, for instance, tending to the wounded.

"Are you okay, Lulu?"

it was far from the worst she’d seen. in fact, it was a little more startling that he seemed to be having a conversation with drilliam the excadrill.[break][break]

when he turned to look at her, she stared quietly for a second or two. ”are you?”[break][break]

surely he was in pain, and it had nearly been her. it was a nice thing that he’d done. maybe he was nice guy after all, even if he was very strange.[break][break]

”i’m fine. thanks for doing that.”[break][break]

she then pointed to the neutralized sableye latched onto the tera crystal, not unlike it had been with shred’s head moments before. ”i am gonna need that back, though.”[break][break]

her eyes shifted over to drilliam as she reached for a pokeball, wondering if the excadrill might still beat her to the punch – but she also figured at this point, probably not.[break][break]

”should i... or do you want to get it?”[break][break]

Which, tragically, isn't even a lie. Just this past year alone, you've been "mauled" by a Lycanroc, a Druddigon, a Slither Wing, and a Xurkitree. Compared to all that? A Sableye is nothing. Didn't even break any bones! Barely reaches a two on the Shred mauling pain index. As soon as the bleeding stops, you probably won't even remember this happened.

...Okay, maybe that's a bit of a lie. But if you do remember this, it won't be because of the mauling.

The stupidest grin in the world spreads across your face. You are SO fucking back! Back to square one. But considering you were previously on square minus six? That's still pretty good! Now, instead of doing what you did last time, you just need to figure out how to get to square two like a normal person. Which... Hm. What do normal people do, actually...?

"...Oh, right." You snap out of your daydreaming and turn your attention back to the Sableye, fingers stroking your chin. "Don't worry, I'll get it."

Y'know what? He might be a little bastard, but with that sixth sense for shiny things, he's a useful little bastard. Maybe he'd be good for sniffing out Tera Crystals? With the way things have been going recently, that's not a bad skill to have. So, you sneak up on the distracted goblin, grab an empty Pokeball, and proceed to bonk him on the back of the head. Then, it's the usual shake, shake, shake, click, and just like that, he's now yours.

You pick up both the Pokeball and the Tera Shard off the ground, attaching one to your belt and tossing the other over to Lulu. Then, you turn your attention to the remaining Tera Crystal, the sole survivor within the otherwise desolate cavern.

"You want the big one, too?"

he was fine. he didn’t look it, but this was basically what he was paid for, so that was that. there was no argument.[break][break]

as his scratched-up mug curled with glee at an unknown win, her own face fell in subtle ways, like she’d suddenly caught the sight of danger. why was he smiling like that? masochism?[break][break]

her attention was gladly returned to the tera crystals. ”great,” she nodded, hand falling from the pokeball she’d been reaching for. ”thanks.”[break][break]

however, the same hand returned when she watched a wild blonde-haired woman disappear into the mist that still lingered, and from it stared back the glowing eyes of paradox pokemon.[break][break]

”absolutely – but i'm not sure if it's worth it.”[break][break]

nonetheless, her houndoom was out again in a moment, the beginnings of a dark pulse glowing between its teeth before it was sent hurtling through the air by the devastating slap of iron hands. joining in the charge was an iron bundle. it hurled a present in shred's direction, as though the beast had not already been through enough.[break][break]

It seems that there's no rest for the wicked, for just as soon as it seems like things are safe, they suddenly got very dangerous. Out from the lone Tera Crystal comes both an Iron Hand and Bundle, who're all too eager to kick you while you're down. Shit, TWO of them at once?! You grit your teeth. This is going to be an uphill battle.

"SHIT! Drilliam, use--"

THUMP! A Present hits you straight in the gut, before exploding with concussive force, sending you tumbling back. A long groan of pain leaks out of your throat. All of a sudden, your face doesn't feel so bad anymore. Your ribs, on the other hands, have definitely gotten a few new cracks that'll nag you for a long while after this battle is over.

But even if you couldn't finish your command, Drilliam nevertheless follows your intention. He rushes towards the Iron Hands while it's distracted with Houndoom, Metal Claws at the ready. Had the attack landed, it certainly would've put some serious hurt on that mechanical fatass. Yet, that doesn't come to pass, as before his steel can cut deep into the iron body, he's suddenly blasted by a Shadow Ball.

Eyes wide, you look back to the Tera Crystal, and your jaw drops. No. No way! Seriously?! Yes, yes way, and absolutely. Floating atop the Dream Mist, still wreathed in the glimmering stardust it was born from, was a Flutter Mane.

This was bad. You'd thought that there was a limit on how many Paradox Pokemon that Tera Crystals could spit out? Was that wrong? Uh oh. This is BAD. Sure, maybe you and Lulu could fight tooth and nail and take down these three, but what if they became these four? Or those five, or that six, and so on and so on? Forget about an uphill battle. This was a sheer cliff.

And yet, even though the situation looks bad, you've still got one last gamble left to make before you fold.

"Lulu, the crystal! SHATTER THE CRYSTAL!"

her houndoom yelped as it hit the cave wall and rolled to the damp floor. however, there was hardly a moment before the shadow tore off towards the iron hands again with a snarl. psychic fangs sunk into the hand that swung towards it and did not let go.[break][break]

with her dog occupied, lulu began to reach for a second pokeball when she saw the flutter mane appear. she eyed it carefully, as shred dealt with the iron bundle.[break][break]

her brow furrowed at his suggestion. ”what? it took rayquaza to break the crystal last time! it isn’t worth it. we should just get out of here.”[break][break]

she released an alakazam then, and a pink light beamed back her dog from where it dangled off the fingers of its paradoxical foe.

one of her hands laid over the shoulder of her psychic-type, while she reached for shred with the other.[break][break]

It took Rayquaza...? You feel like something just went over your head, and you're not just talking about Drilliam's limp body. Shit, is this something to do with Meteno? Or Littleroot? Or Mt. Pyre? Or one of the dozens of other incidents whose reports are languishing as attachments on unread emails?

You're sure you can crack that Tera Crystal. All it would take is one good hit to shatter that thing into a thousand little pieces. Yet, as the twin silhouettes of a Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant begin to rise from the Dream Mist, survival instinct triumphs fighting spirit.

You take Lulu's hand and scramble back to your feet. Fuck it. You're done here. Now, time to blow this joint.

"Drilliam, Sandstorm!"

"O-on it...!"

The mole is fairly banged-up from that last attack, but he still finds the strength to stagger forth and send out a squall of dirt and dust towards your growing opposition. With that, his role is done. You return him to his Pokeball, and turn back the way you came.

And then, you run as fast as both your and Lulu's legs can carry you.
