This is a tale as old as the silver screen. Two men lock eyes in a crowd. They’re both participants. They both know the score. It’s time for a Pokemon battle.[break][break]
“Yo!” Navy greets the man who is to be his opponent. “Seems like a good day for a battle, huh? Wonder what you’ll be throwin’ out to fight me.” His words are with practiced cavalier ease. This is the face he shows to Hoenn – that of a confident cowboy, ready to fight at a moment’s notice. Whether in peace or in war, he is their defender, their sword and their shield.[break][break]
This isn’t how men usually speak to their murderers. Navy can be forgiven for his ignorance. At his side is Roland, an Iron Valiant. Cillian has already met the chrome warrior. They fought in the caves beneath Dewford, when his trainer was baptized in fire. If the machine possesses any recognition that his master does not, the Iron Valiant keeps it to himself.[break][break]
He simply readies his blade – his one blade. Roland is maimed, one-armed after a run-in with Zev Harcourt. Much like the man who trains him, he stands ready to fight despite the many injuries doled upon him.[break][break]

In spite of their rivalry, Cillian feels a grudging respect for Michael Navidson. They were both fighters to the bitter end. They'd both do anything for the people they cared about. They were two different sides of a different coin, on two different sides of a war.[break][break]

Of course, Thomas Finnegan wasn't a part of all that. Cillian must leave his own history at the door, and engage in this fight as if Navy were a stranger to him. That was just fine. He'd acted this part before.[break][break]

"My good old buddy, my little wolf!"[break][break]

Faolan appears in a flash of red light, looking grumpy and serious in contrast to Cillian's bright smile.[break][break]

"Eh, been doin' all right! Our first time doin' a thing like this, so we're still finding the learning curve. Isn't that right Wolf?"[break][break]

Faolan doesn't respond, simply squaring up against the Iron Valiant as serious as if this were a fight to the death. It seemed their Pokémon were as similar as they were. Speaking of Pokémon...[break][break]

"Your buddy there didn't get that injury in the tournament, I hope!"

“Oh, his arm?” Navy’s smile is tinted grim. What comes next is what he considers his solemn duty. So many people come to this region seeking fame, fortune, and glory. It always ends the same – in too deep in Team Rocket, or driven off the deep end by the League.[break][break]
“Had a run-in with Zev Harcourt. Back when no one knew who he was. If you don’t know who that is, well…check interpol’s lists in about a month.” Someone has to stress just how dangerous being here can be, both for men and the Pokemon that follow them. If it means he’s no fun at parties, that’s the price Navy resolves to pay.[break][break]
“Lucario’s a good Pokemon. Got one myself that I use for my Elite 4 challenge. Don’t think I’ve ever gotten the chance to fight one. Roland.” Power gathers in Navy’s tera orb. Possibility makes itself manifest. Throwing it out, Roland is enveloped, for just a moment, in an impromptu tera crystal. It blossoms like a flower around him.[break][break]
Trapped within that cocoon, he sees a vision of a world ruled by the strong. In that world, he still has his flesh. He has a sword and a shield. They call him the fighting master. The passing fantastical daydream empowers him, makes him strong.[break][break]
“Looks like he’s rarin’ to go. Watch out, bud.” Sheer fighting spirit gathers along the edge of his blade like thunder before a storm. Rushing Lucario down, he unleashes that energy in a close-range tera blast.

Navy must see the feigned confusion in the furrow of his brow when Zev Harcourt is mentioned; he follows up with an explanation, and Cillian's eyes widen. Once, he might've mentioned this to Zev in passing. Now, the less time he spends around the Beast, the better.[break][break]

"Never heard of him," he lies, shaking his head. "Sounds like that's a good thing."[break][break]

Past all of his lies, the softness in his gaze is genuine when he looks toward Faolan. Pokemon were meant to be seen as tools for the glory of Team Rocket, but looking at Faolan, all Cillian saw was a friend. A partner. The Lucario that had given his life to protect Cillian, once, and would do so again in a heartbeat.[break][break]

Though Roland's display of raw power is terrifying, Faolan doesn't flinch from it. He braces himself, firing a FLASH CANNON in the hopes of both blinding and staggering his opponent before leaping out of the way with EXTREME SPEED.[break][break]

But would it work, or leave him open to attack?[break][break]

An Iron Valiant fresh from interdream mist might be caught off guard by the cannon blast. Roland is no fresh Iron Valiant. He has been battered by the crucible called Hoenn since his master’s rebirth. Tilting his blade, energy quickly gathers, runs along its edge like a shooting star, and fires in a concentrated beam of moonlight. Steely energy meets fae magic. Onlookers gawk.[break][break]
It gives the humans a chance to speak.[break][break]
“Really should brush up on your travel advisories.” That sentence, casual and steeped in warmth, borders on a mantra. It’s something he tells foreigners too often. “You’re in an active war zone. Got yourself a well trained Lucario…”[break][break]
Roland and Faolan dart away, two streaks of blinding light. Roland skirts back, takes a moment to set up a field for himself. Electricity trickles along the edge of his blade, spreading out to cover the ground. Navy’s hair stands on end. An electric terrain surges. With it, Roland’s quark drive comes online.[break][break]
“…you’d do great in Galar or Unova. They’ve got the best circuits. Where are you from?”

Roland is no ordinary foe. He faces Faolan head-on and with his resilience, gains the upper hand. But, as was in his nature, Faolan does not relent.[break][break]

"I'm not completely ignorant," Cillian assures Navy, offering a warm smile in return for the caution. "I know you've got a big problem with Rockets and Avatars and such. Your Zev one of them?" A pause, long enough for Navy to affirm or deny, before he says, "I don't plan on getting involved with all that. Just here for the tournament and then I'm back home."[break][break]

His smile widens to a grin when Navy asks where he's from, praising the Galarian gym circuit.[break][break]

Once, when Cillian had been a different man, he'd lived for that circuit. He'd loved to attend Circhester's stadium, and to root for his favourite challengers. The memory is old, fading at the edges.[break][break]

"From Galar! Spikemuth." The half-truth falls easily from his lips. "The gym circuits kinda got disrupted by the Darkest Day; most of 'em have resumed now, but was enough down time for Faolan to get bored. S'why we came here, originally!"[break][break]

It's not Thomas Finnegan's first time in Hoenn; investigations into him would prove as much. So he weaves that into his tale.[break][break]

Static raises the hair on Cillian's arms as an ELECTRIC TERRAIN spreads over the field. Faolan grumbles, but quickly tries to capitalize on Roland's set-up by firing off an AURA SPHERE.[break][break]

“Spikemuth?” For a split second, he wears an older man’s eyes.[break][break]
Most of the routes through the woods are poisoned. Passing through is a matter of leveraging Valkyrie’s speed. Fire off shadow blasts. Outrun them. Run, run, run. Like the northern wind. Spikemuth will not be cut off.[break][break]
“I stayed in Motostoke for a while.” There’s a terse edge to his words, beneath the friendliness. He doesn’t mean for it to be there, but thinking about Galar proves hard. It brushes the edge of his grief. It’s hard to be Navy, Elite 4, when he remembers Lord Navidson’s life.[break][break]
“You oughtta make a go of it. The Galar circuit. Maybe your guy here’d end up being the champ’s Lucario.” Roland sees the aura sphere and returns fire with a focus blast. Both fighters are blessed with ample ranged options. Their close-range strength lures trainers into forgetting that both Lucario and Iron Valiants serve as excellent artillery platforms.[break][break]
Something will, inevitably, have to give. One of them will find an opening. They will advance. A decisive strike will end the match. Navy can spot the signs: Roland is taking this seriously. He has to, or else he will fail.[break][break]
“But…yeah. Zev’s one of them. Cillian Quinn, Tempest Quinn, bryan delarosa, Elisabeth Fiorelli, THEO BECKETT to name some more…plenty of monsters in these parts.”

Having been through a similar experience in not-Galar, Cillian thinks he understands the tension in the others shoulders. He, too, had found himself spending decades in a place that hadn't truly been his Circhester.[break][break]

But that was Cillian, not Finn, so he says, "Not a fan, I take it?"[break][break]

His laugh is easy, unburdened by the ghost of an ancient city's chill that creeps down Cillian's back.[break][break]

"We've tried a few times. Tough crowd." He laughs again. "Really, though, it's not about winning for me and Wolf." It absolutely was, for Faolan. His eyes burn with fury at being bested thus far. "Just about the experience!"[break][break]

He doesn't react to his own name, expecting it. He's sure to cant his head at mention of the others.[break][break]

"Cillian Quinn I've heard of. That family's a big deal back home, it was all over the news when it came out. Never heard of Tempest Quinn, though." He frowns to disguise the urge to smile. "Or the others. I'll keep an eye out, though. Thanks."[break][break]

Their battle has come down to the wire, and Roland comes in hot. In a desperate bid for his own shot at victory, Faolan braces himself and tries to DETECT the pattern of the Valiant's movements, charging an AURA SPHERE between his palms.

“Surprising.” He says with honesty. “Everyone loves a good power couple. Can’t have a storm without a tempest.” A bit of guilt punctuates the words. It is, after all, hardly appropriate to speak so well of one’s enemies. This war is as much a PR war as it is a battlefront. Giving Rocket a line like that’s a direct hook to Hoenn’s heart.[break][break]
But they, like most of Rocket, are so much more honest. Both about themselves, and about the way the world works. Roland and Finn’s wolf, too. They battle for the sake of battling. They battle because neither wants to lose. Victory is a close thing, sitting on the edge of a blade.[break][break]
When Roland stands victorious, his tera blast finally exploding against his opponent, despite everything, it feels like a victory well earned. Roland savors the sensation, as much as a machine with a beating robot heart can savor anything.[break][break]
“Or a good home grown scandal.” Hoenn and Galar both have plenty of things. “Good fight, man.” The crowd around them certainly seems to agree. They raise their arms and cheer. “Wanna grab a drink?”
