Sniffing, Sebastian flicked his eyes over Josh Devlin, the Gym Leader, the Ranger, the Racer. It was something like interest, something like disgust, but also with a playful sharpness in the lilt of his tongue. The Kalosian accent was still thick in his mouth, all honey and warmth that hid his real intentions.[break][break]

Overhead, birds wings cast dark shadows as they passed over. Alpha, the Talonflame, loose and idling in the sky lazily.[break][break]

"Haven't seen you since the last Prix." It's conversational but pointed. A jab or maybe something else.[break][break]

Lavigne never talked to people unless he wanted something, after all.

Having just been a big help clearing out swarming Cyclizar and recruiting Deathborn, a giant among his kind, to Mauville Gym, the Gym Leader returned to the highway with a fresh set of Pokémon, ready to zip and zoom down the road with some of his favorite racing partners. The Manectric he rode upon made him stick out to anyone who recognized him. Especially Sebastian Lavigne . He would have been able to recognize Saber anywhere.

"...Seb?" Josh asked, his tone curious but a bit defensive. Saber barked once, at first a little uneasy around the man his age. "It's been years since I've seen you. At least four or five, hasn't it?" he asked, Alpha's shadow passing over Aleph fairly far behind the conversing racers and putting the Type: Null on edge. "What brings you to Hoenn? Is it the big water race in a couple months?"

Seb's lips curl into something like a grimace. He thinks about not answering Josh Devlin. Telling a lie or just the other to 'mind his business' would be easier.[break][break]

You didn't catch flies with vinegar, though, so Seb bit back the usual defensive urge.[break][break]

"No, but you can bet your ass I'll win it." Even if Water wasn't his specialty by a long shot. "My friend was missing. Last seen here in Hoenn. Came to look for her."[break][break]

He clicked his tongue.[break][break]

"What about you, Devlin? Seen you on the news a few times back home. They still act like Hoenn's racing scene is some charity case and you're crazy for staying here."

Above, a Skiploom flutters by gently in the breeze... until Alpha grasp it in his talons, his Quick Attack used to drag it down. The massive Talonflame lands next to his trainer, kicking up dust and grit as he does so, wings churning. He picks at the grass type, a nice snack, before Seb glances over at him and sighs. A pokeball tossed out to capture the poor thing.

Classic Seb, fiercely competitive as ever when it came to being in the saddle. They were, in a way, mirror images of each other. In some ways, they were foils to each other, especially in their demeanor. "You'll have to work hard if you want to get past Snacker, heh," he replied with a sly smile. "Fastest Sharpedo in Hoenn. When he Mega Evolves, he's so fast even I have a hard time holding on."

A missing person? That sounded like a job for the Hoenn Rangers! "Thought about submitting a case to the Hoenn Rangers? In the racing offseason, I help with search and rescue operations." His Pokémon had a knack for it, too. With even a few clues, they could track down just about anyone missing, and his ride Pokémon could lift them out of nearly any environment.

Josh's relationship with Hoenn was... complicated, to say the least. "Ever since Mauville City Gym became synonymous with racing in Hoenn, I've been busy. I don't grind the regular events anymore, as the Gym keeps me too busy to do so, but I still make sure to race in the major events." Josh stepped back to observe Alpha's battle with the Skiploom; the poor grass-type didn't stand a chance against such a vicious bird. The Talonflame's Quick Attack was as swift as Suzaku's. Even Aleph looked impressed, though he was still antsy to battle an Ultra Beast. Perhaps he should bring Jiujiu out of his Poké Ball for the Type: Null to spar with?
