Eventually, the Pokemon brings you to the outskirts of the festival to offer gratitude before its departure. But the good times do not last. Its crystal mask begins to crack as a TOXIC CHAIN bursts from inside it. As the scene begins to change, it swings its IVY CUDGEL at you.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]To her surprise, Aurelie recognized some of the festival foods being offered at brightly colored stalls lit by vibrant paper lanterns. Many of them seemed similar to the Johtonian food that her friend Xiura Balfaltin had introduced her to, like grilled chicken and seafood skewers, round balls stuffed with octopus, fish-shaped pastries with chocolate fillings, and chewy rice dumplings.

A quick investigation of her pockets in this simulation yielded a handful of Pokedollars, enough to buy plenty of festival snacks. The next few minutes were full of Aurelie munching and offering various snacks to her companions. "You gotta try this, Jayden! I mean, Admin Cross.

"And you too, mysterious friend!" she'd add, offering a skewer or paper plate to the masked figure. To her disappointment, though, it always shook its head.

In fact, it never spoke at all, though its excited gestures and cheerful movements made clear that it was happy enough. So much for interrogating it! the redhead thought ruefully, chewing on a bite of rice dumpling. But at least we seem to have befriended it.

At least, it seemed that way until, at the very end of the festival, when the strange Pokemon suddenly sprouted the strangest chain from its otherwise beautiful, intricate mask. When it abruptly became aggressive, Aurelie cried out in shock.

"No! What happened? Please! Stop!" she exclaimed. "What are you doing? I thought we were friends!"

Even as she reached for a Pokeball, she knew it'd be too late. Still, Aurelie jumped in the way between the masked creature and Jayden. She didn't even know if she was protecting him from it—or it from him.

But she never really had to know, when the scenario darkened and the simulation ended.

"What was that?" she whispered. "Did you see that chain thing? Was that a Pokemon ability that I've just never seen before?"

[break][break] Compared to the blacksmith's excitement, Jayden followed more slowly. However the redhead's enthusiasm was infectious, as she traveled through each stall and peered with child-like zeal in each.

[break][break] 'You gotta try this, Jayden! I mean, Admin Cross!'

[break][break] He allows the transgression, instead leaning towards her.

[break][break] "Mm."

[break][break] Slowly, he leans over, mouth closing over a ball of Takoyaki. It's delicious.

[break][break] "Not bad."

[break][break] It feels oddly like a date — or perhaps, it might have felt like that, should he have been under different company. Perhaps there was an alternate plane of existence, where his life was different, where he did not have to be burdened by Rocket's goals, and which he could share a lifetime of budding excitement around weapons and swords with Aurelie Lefevre and their half-child half-pokemon emerald friend.

[break][break] However, dreams are not made to last. Almost all of them most certainly unravel into nightmare.

[break][break] This is no different — and Jayden tenses, prepared for the blow.

[break][break] "Aurelie! Watch out!" he hisses, blinking as the woman jumps between him and the pokemon, to avoid being hit by the ivy cudgel. Inexplicably, ice daggers form in his hands, ready to strike.

[break][break] But the simulation warps.

[break][break] Before long, they are back.

[break][break] "It's just a simulation," he says simply, blinking as he situates himself. "But I'm not sure."

[break][break] "Perhaps we can take a visit to the records department to investigate."

[break][break] Jayden seems off-put by the whole thing. However, was he off-put by the series of events that had just happened? Or how eerily similar that festival had been to another one in his life?
