"Attention all Vital City Tournament participants. Registration will be closing in two hours. Registration will be closing in two hours. Once registration closes, you will be expected to finish your current match and convene in the commons. Thank you."

The announcement meant Josh had a solid hold on second place when tallying up all his main tournament and side event wins. There was still time to catch CIAN MAHER , but it would be a long shot; he had to nearly win out if he wanted to. There was a serious look on the faces of both him and his quadrupedal Zeraora as he stood across from the disguised Cillian Quinn , going by the name of Finn.

It may have been for the better. There would have been fireworks otherwise.

"Evening!" Josh waved toward Finn, the Zeraora a little woozy from having fought so many matches. The Gym Leader's Z-Glove and Raikiri's QUICKINIUM-Z were steaming from having been used so much. He would have to check the crystals for cracking after the tournament from how much they had been used. If the crystal broke, it wouldn't be a big deal; he still had last fall's Passho harvest stored away safely, ready to craft a replacement if need be.

"Gym Leader Devlin, but please, call me Josh." There would be little time for pre-match banter, Raikiri sprinting toward Faolan with PLASMA PAWS sparking a brilliant white.

It would be even better to spill his blood over this battlefield... but that wasn't today's goal. He sheathes his claws, for now.[break][break]

Poor Faolan isn't so lucky to see the Zeraora sheathe theirs, but his paws glow with similar energy as he COPIES the attack, aiming to meet this demon of speed head on in a clash of titans.[break][break]

"Best of luck to you, Finn," Josh replied in a friendly demeanor before a focused look washed over his face. It was the same look that Cillian got when he squared off against Josh the last time. It was the same Zeraora, too. The same quadrupedal Zeraora, unable to hold back. On the prowl with the ferocity of a Raikou, he met Faolan's PLASMA PAWS head on, the claws clashing in an electric fireworks show that threatened to short out the lighting and the scoreboard from how far the sparks reached. It was a terrifying exchange of blows, one Raikiri only barely came out on top of.

Faolan was no ordinary foe, either. The Lucario may have been the most vicious foe he encountered all tournament. Showing zero mercy, the Zeraora took off across the court, screeching to a stop to ignite his paws from friction alone. Josh's prized Pokémon zipped back in the Lucario's direction, lunging at him with paws ablaze, striking with the vigor of a martial artist master's FIRE PUNCHES.

The Zeraora seems tired. Cillian's heard the occasional broadcast; Josh Devlin is one of the top competitors, and it shows. Both in their skill, and in the exhaustion that's etched into their movements and expressions.[break][break]

Cillian can onlyu hope Faolan can capitalize on that.[break][break]

Flaming fists are countered by a swirling cloud of LIFE DEW in the hopes of dampening their heat, the Lucario staying at close range to fire a SHADOW WAVE point-blank.[break][break]

The Lucario's SHADOW WAVE made Josh tense up. Who would willingly use a Shadow Pokémon in a tournament such as this one? He stepped to the corner of his trainer's box to wave for an additional judge to keep an eye on the match. The Gym Leader started to become paranoid for his own safety. Was the entire tournament secretly a Rocket ruse to gather most, if not all, of Hoenn's Gym Leaders in one place?

The distraction weighed heavily on him, the fists leading the SHADOW WAVE physically striking Raikiri hard on top of the sinister, eldritch energies that burned him like a dark god's wrath. As much as it wasn't Raikiri's style to right with sheer power, with Josh preoccupied, he had to take the battle into his own hands. He eschewed speed to fight back with a sudden rear, trying to hammer down upon the Lucario with his bright-white PLASMA PAWS.

Raikiri falters beneath Faolan's dark energy, and the Lucario growls in triumph as he gains the upper hand, if even for a moment. He lives for this. The fight. The victory. But it's not over yet.[break][break]

The PLASMA PAWS are familiar, and this time Faolan attempts to DETECT his opponents patterns to find an opening in which he can strike with EXTREME SPEED.[break][break]

"We'll talk about it after the match," Josh replied as Faolan charged toward Raikiri in an assault so fast that almost anyone else would not have been able to track it. Not him, though. Using such a fast move against the Master of Faster was folly.

There was no outspeeding Josh Devlin , unless your name was Eva Morales .

Josh raised his Z-GLOVE and twisted his arm to allow his Zeraora to bask in the light of Z-Energy. Raikiri let out a loud and menacing purr as he met blitzkrieg with blitzkrieg: the one move that could strike before even the sacred, mighty EXTREME SPEED.

The Zeraora's HYPERSONIC PLASMA CHARGE was a ferocious display of pure speed: paws and claws shot toward Faolan at a frightening closing speed. The impact was gonna hurt, even for the Zeraora. If that failed to bring the Lucario to his knees, then the line of lightning strikes and the sonic boom in his wake would threaten to do so!

Faolan is fast, so much that his silhouette seems to blur around the edges as Cillian watches him zip toward the Zeraora. It looks promising, until Josh Devlin activates the thunder cat's Z-power. Raikiri moves so quick that Cillian barely sees him at all. There's not even enough time for him to click his tongue in warning for his partner.[break][break]

The Lucario is watching, though. He knows what to expect from a Z-move: power. The speed might catch him off guard, but he still DETECTS his opponent as best he can.[break][break]

If he managed to withstand the impact, he'd strike back with a point-blank AURA SPHERE.[break][break]

But that was a pretty big 'if'.[break][break]

The HYPERSONIC PLASMA CHARGE was simply too fast to DETECT; when Josh researched the move, one of the things he crafted it around was the ability to penetrate defenses by going too fast for them to materialize. It was too big of an if; regardless of whether Faolan withstood Raikiri's electric wrath, the judges had seen enough, pointing their red flags at Finn. Josh was one step closer to catching up to Cian. Perhaps he could take the top spot after all.

"Great match, Finn," Josh said after withdrawing his ferocious feline, offering the taller man a handshake. "I am curious, though... why did you use a Shadow Pokémon for the tournament? They seem way too dangerous to try to control in a controlled environment like this."
