THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

Once Jack and Aurelie were through the rift, Jack moved confidently but carefully across the strange landscape. After their last excursion to the Ultra Crater, it had taken some time and medical attention for them to recover but Jack was as eager as ever to make another trip.[break][break]

Some of his eagerness stemmed from the mystery they had discovered in the craters, so Jack had wracked his brains at what "gifts" they might bring back with them until inspiration had stuck him like a lightning bolt. The first crater that they had found had wanted a seaborne shell and he thought he had the answer, or an answer at least.[break][break]

"Careful now," he grinned up at Aurelie as they crossed an uneven pile of rubble on their way down the steep side of the crater. He offered her a steadying hand in case she needed it before turning back down the steep slope. When they finally entered the bamboo stalks with the familiar tags, Jack reached for one of the pokeballs at his belt.[break][break]

He quickly looked to Aurelie for reassurance before releasing his Slowking. The Royal Pokemon swiveled his shell-crowned head slowly back and forth to take in the surroundings as Jack held his breath in anticipation. A slight breeze stirred the air of hushed expectation until the gift tags were fluttering in a stiff wind. Above at the rim of the crater, a large moon began rising to dominate the sky above, close enough to be visible even in the daylight. The wind stopped abruptly and the moon stopped with it, hanging frozen in the sky on the horizon.[break][break]

Remembering the dangers they had faced before, Jack refrained from whooping in celebration. Instead, he pulled Aurelie into a gleeful hug and whispered, "We did it!"

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Holding onto Jack's steadying hand, Aurelie watched apprehensively as his Slowking wandered through the crater that had requested a gift of a seaborne shell. When a large moon started to rise—and nothing else dangerous or frightening happened—she let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. Less cautious than the Ranger, she let out a celebratory cheer.

"Oh, maybe I shouldn't be yelling," she exclaimed immediately after in chagrin, when he swept her into a hug and whispered in her ear. "But yes! You were right! It worked!"

Now, what exactly had been accomplished was more of a mystery. "I wonder if the moon and these craters are somehow connected, since it only started rising after you left the Slowking in the crater," she mused aloud. "I guess the only way to find out is to see what happens if we leave more gifts."

Eager to try, she dashed back up the slope of the crater onto the grass, pulling Jack along with her. A burst of warm steam blasted from a nearby geyser directly into the redhead's face just as she arrived at the top, but even this didn't diminish her high spirits as she surveyed the landscape.

If anything, as Aurelie inhaled more of the steam, she felt almost lightheaded with excitement. Giddy, even. Every breath made her feel happy, her blood fizzing with energy, her skin alive to every tiny breeze and motion.

Looking at Jack, she suddenly began to laugh. The grass beside them had been smoothed by their feet into a wide oval, and Aurelie giddily decided it was clearly made for dancing. As another surge of steam shot from the geyser, she spun in a circle and started humming a lilting waltz tune, hitting most of the notes right.

"Jack!" she exclaimed merrily, her eye sparkling. Turning him, she made a surprisingly elegant bow and mimed doffing an imaginary top hat to him. "Let's dance!"

Energized and entranced by the effects of the steam, Aurelie pulled him close and began to spin slowly about the oval of grass. The only music they had was her continued humming, but she also felt warmed and contented with the rhythm of their heartbeats. She gazed deep into his eyes and smiled softly at him, lost in the sweetness of the strange moment.

Raising an eyebrow quizzically, Jack grinned at Aurelie as she danced within the circle of flattened grass. While he loved her joyous personality and beautiful smile, he was also uncomfortably aware of how dangerous their location remained.[break][break]

"Yes, love. Let's dance when we get home but first we need to try bringing gifts to other craters like you said," Jack said, kindly but firmly. As she pulled him close to dance, another geyser erupted with steam. The fine mist coated his exposed skin in a damp warmth as he opened his mouth to chivvy her along.[break][break]

But oh how her hips move. We're a pair, she and I, and I cannot leave a lady to dance alone.[break][break]

Jack pressed his hips into hers, sliding his hands down to grip her firm buttocks as his head dipped down to brush his lips along hers. He swayed in time with her, the tension draining from his body as he melted into her.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie's lips curved into a pleased little smirk as Jack, after a moment of hesitation or reluctance, slid his hands down her back and pulled her close. She gazed deeply into his handsome, sparkling eyes, reveling in the warmth of his skin and the delicious feeling of his lean, strong body pressed against her. Desire and bliss alike surged through her veins like blood, making it hard to think of anything but him.

How long the two of them danced together on that circle of grass was impossible to say. It could have been a few minutes or a few hours, as far as Aurelie could tell, still giddy and intoxicated by the mind-altering geyser steam.

Their dance only ended when, in the middle of executing a gentle twirl, she tripped clumsily over a baby Celesteela hiding in the edge of the grass. As before, the indignant Pokemon gave a loud, piercing shriek. Aurelie clapped her hands over her ears at the harsh, ear-splitting sound, which seemed to blast straight through the sweet, idyllic mists of confusion that had been filling her mind.

"Wait, what the..." she mumbled, blinking and shaking her head. Her brow creased as she noticed how she and Jack stood locked in a close embrace. "I don't understand... Were we…dreaming just now?"

Clarity and lucidity gradually flowed back as the steam's effect dissipated, but the Celesteela's shriek had done its work. The sounds of metallic, almost cymbal-like clashing and clanging echoed behind them, and the redhead spun around and gasped in alarm at the source of the furious noise.

"It's that Kartana squadron! Again!" she cried, sudden panic breaking the last of the romantic spell that had ensnared them both.

Her gaze darted around frantically, searching for nearby hiding spots and not finding any in the stretch of open grass. As the squad of avenging Kartanas leaped closer, their blades glinting in the light of the newly risen moon, Aurelie pointed a shaking finger into the depths of the crater from which they'd just emerged earlier.

"Jack," she whispered urgently. "Let's make a run for it! Maybe they'll lose track of us in the bamboo stalks and we'd have a chance of getting away."

Aurelie's words barely registered as he blinked owlishly at the screaming Celesteela. His mind had become foggy, as if trying to remember a dream he had just woken from. Like sand running through his fingers, he struggled to make sense of things until his brain finally caught up with the world.[break][break]

Fuck.[break][break]

He nodded slowly to Aurelie, counting down silently with his fingers before making a break for the crater. Pebbles and dust scattered down the slopes as they barreled downward, heading for the relative cover of the bamboo. Even above the clatter of stones, Jack could hear the strange cries of the Kartana echoing down behind them. Not daring to turn and lose his footing on the treacherous slope, he skidded down the final meters and plunged into the bamboo beside Aurelie.[break][break]

Pushing into a full on sprint, Jack felt his toes dig into the soil as the bamboo enveloped them. The world turned a strange shade of green as the tall stalks whipped past, the speed of his movement blurring their passing. From the corners of his eyes, he caught flurries of motion as the Kartana sped past down other rows, their orange, white, and gold colorations flickering through the stalks on either side.[break][break]

With the uncanny voices of the Kartana ringing through the forest, Jack ran desperately on as more and more appeared in his peripheral vision. When a clump of fallen stalks caught his eye, relief surged through him. Doing his best to quietly skid to a halt, he pulled Aurelie down with him as he slid beneath the thick cover of fallen bamboo and struggled to quiet his labored breathing.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie pelted down into the crater after Jack, trying her best to keep up with him despite her shorter legs. The breath began to burn in her lungs, but fear and uncertainty gave her feet wings. She too could glimpse the Kartanas darting alongside and behind them in flashes of stark white between stalks of rich green bamboo, at once relentless and menacing.

When Jack pulled her under the cover of some fallen bamboo stalks, the redhead was grateful to sink down and hide. She huddled beside him, hardly daring to breathe as a Kartana paused in front of their hiding spot on sharply pointed feet. Her pulse pounded so loudly in her ears that she feared it might somehow hear her heartbeat.

To her horror, the Kartana lifted one blade-like arm and—with only a second's warning—suddenly and shockingly stabbed it down into the pile of bamboo stalks sheltering them. Its sword sliced through the bamboo with barely any resistance, which at any other time would've elicited an admiring whistle from Aurelie. Bamboo was sturdy stuff, and the living plant even more so.

At the moment, though, she was more concerned with where the sword was aiming. The blade slammed down almost exactly between Jack and Aurelie, very near their unprotected heads. Pulling it back, the Kartana skewered another bamboo stalk and another in swift succession, narrowly missing first Aurelie's right arm and then Jack's left calf.

Finally, to Aurelie's infinite relief, the Kartana withdrew its blade and stepped away. She met Jack's gaze, her own eye wide with hope and terror. A second Kartana joined it, and the first muttered a low series of sounds that almost sounded like words in a human tongue.

They're speaking to each other! she realized with a shock. I didn't know they could do that. What are they saying? What are those sounds?

Before Jack could stop her, she had taken out her cell phone in a flash and turned on the seldom-used recording app. Thankfully, the faint rustle of movement didn't alert the Kartanas. They both uttered the sounds again, and Aurelie could only hope she caught all of them on her phone.

Then, her finger accidentally pushed the Playback button on her phone, and it started playing the sounds she'd just recorded. Loudly. And oddly, backwards. Startlingly, the strange noises resolved into a surprisingly coherent, almost human-sounding sentence that would have stunned her, if the accident hadn't already taken her breath away: "Once again, I have cut a worthless object."

In response, the two Kartanas' heads immediately swung in their direction.

Oh no! What have I done! she thought in a panic. As the two Kartanas started prowling toward the pile of bamboo stalks, Aurelie reflexively reached for her Pokeballs. If they were certain there were intruders here, then maybe their only way out would be to fight.

His breath froze in his throat as Aurelie's phone began to play back the recording of the Kartana. He was a second behind her are their hands went to their pokeballs and as he burst from the cover of the bamboo, he was already releasing Harpe.[break][break]

The Kartana were on them in a flash, their razor-sharp limbs clanging against the Aegislash's king's shield. Even with both Jack and Aurelie defending their position, the Kartanas' onslaught was fierce. While they were holding their own, Jack could already see the inevitable end if they didn't do something drastic.[break][break]

"Aurelie, cover us!" Jack shouted over the sounds of the fighting, "Harpe, we need Excalibur Galatine to finish them off!"[break]

EXCALIBUR GALATINE | STEEL-TYPE[break]aegislash charges for ONE TURN before firing an unblockable attack that is always super-effective.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]From literally steamy dancing and romance to this fierce confrontation with the Kartanas, this venture into the Ultra Crater world had proven anything but predictable. Aurelie winced a little at Jack's request, not because she disagreed at all with his strategy but because she was pretty sure she hadn't brought any Pokemon who would be particularly good at laying down covering fire.

Still, she quickly hurried in front of the preoccupied Aegislash, followed by the Infernape she had hastily released when the Kartanas attacked. Clenching her jaw, the redhead eyed the Kartanas speculatively. Before, she'd only had eyes for their beauty, but now she found herself seeking out their vulnerabilities.

"Well, they say the best defense is a good offense," she remarked at last, noting the Kartanas' fragile, papery form and metallic sheen. "And fire makes the best offense, I've always thought! Hit them with a FLAME WHEEL, Courroux!"

Without hesitation, the Infernape cloaked himself in a mantle of flame and hurtled straight into the two Kartanas. His fiery fists and feet struck in a furious flurry, rendering one Kartana unconscious after the damage it'd already sustained. The other, though, raised its sword above its head for a mighty blow.

"Look out!" Aurelie cried out, unnecessarily. The Infernape was already reacting, watching the descending slash of the blade with narrowed, calculating eyes.

She'd expected that the martial artist Pokemon would clap its hands along either side of the blade and catch it in mid-strike, just like in an action movie. Instead, the Infernape simply slapped the blade aside with one glowing fist, while whirling away to dodge. The red-hot sword slashed down into empty air.

Aurelie broke into applause, though she quickly stopped as the Infernape and Kartana didn't spare her even a single glance but squared up against each other right away. "Nice! Good move! And..."

Out of the corner of her eye, the redhead spied the Aegislash finally finishing its charging-up. Drawing a sharp breath, she called out, "Courroux, pull back! You've done your part, and now I think Jack and Harpe have got this."

After this, she hoped the rest of their adventure could be a little bit safer and more predictable. These mysterious regions were always exciting to visit, but exhausting too. Safety and predictability would be very welcome after this.

"Now, do it!" Jack shouted as Courroux moved clear.[break][break]

Harpe angled his blade upward as a coruscating beam of light burst skyward. Even the Kartana seemed confused as the flashy show, the puzzled look still evident on its face when the searing beam of the z-move exploded down from the sky. Jack shielded his eyes from the blast and when he looked again, all that was left was a smoking crater.[break][break]

His breath heaved from his in relief as he turned to Aurelie, uncertain of whether to lecture her for the insane stunt she had just pulled trying to record the Kartana on her phone or thank her for her battle strategy that had allowed them to survive. After a slight shake of his head, he settled on neither option while they were still within the danger of the Ultra Crater.[break][break]

"C'mon, I've got one more gift and then we should get out of here," he said, doing a decent job of keeping emotion from his voice.[break][break]

Whether by luck or by their exceedingly cautious movement, they were able to descend again into another crater. Jack presented his Dragonair and an eerie wind rustled the tags on the bamboo as the crater accepted a dragon's jewel. The large moon that had appeared in the sky grew brighter above them.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Summoning her Infernape back into its Pokeball, Aurelie let out a wild, exultant cheer as she watched Jack's Aegislash unleash yet another devastating attack, this time on the bewildered and preoccupied Kartanas. The sharp-bladed Pokemon veritably melted under the searing EXCALIBUR GALATINE, leaving only papery ashes floating into a smoldering crater afterward.

"Yes! That was amazing," the redhead cheered, flashing a thumbs-up at the Aegislash and a grateful smile at Jack. "That's the kind of attack I never get tired of seeing. Kind of like watching a mega transformation or a terastallization..."

She trailed off slowly as she caught the look Jack was giving her. Instead of being triumphant, he seemed oddly torn in some way. Aurelie hadn't seen him look so unsure about what to say to her in a long time.

Is he mad at me? she suddenly wondered, as a wisp of dark smoke tickled her nose and made her sneeze. In her pocket, her Pokeballs clicked against her phone case, and Aurelie winced. I guess he has reason to be. Is he going to yell at me? Or tell me off?

To her surprise, Jack did neither. She gaped a little when he simply shook his head and led her away to another crater, where he presented his Dragonair as an offering. As the moon responded by growing even larger and brighter above them, Aurelie shook her head wonderingly.

"That's clever to use your Pokemon as answers to the requests," she ventured to say aloud. "It's lucky they don't have to stay here permanently after you offer them! It also makes the 'robe of fire rats' make a lot more sense, though I don't think Courroux would count as a rat, exactly."

As they cautiously and warily navigated back to the portal leading into Ultra Crater, with silvery beams of moonlight shining from the lemon-yellow sky, she cleared her throat. "Oh, and Jack... I'm sorry about the whole thing with my phone. I was just so surprised and excited to hear the Kartanas talking, and it seemed so unique that I wanted to record it..."

She shook her head ruefully. For all that making her phone play back the sounds had been an accident, it should've been completely avoidable. "I'm sorry about that, I really am. I shouldn't have put us both in danger. I promise...I'll do better next time and think before I act."

Aurelie reached out and squeezed Jack's hand. If it hadn't been for him... Well, the moon would be dimmer, and she'd probably be a lot more bloodstained. She knew she was very lucky to have him in her life, both as a lover and an adventuring companion on mysterious, otherworldly journeys like these.
