She'd been in the medical bay for her own reasons, following up in regards to her bloodwork with Naomi Sato. It hadn't been her intention to pry regarding the current patients, either, except that a certain name had caught her attention.[break][break]

Still, the underboss hesitated before approaching him.[break][break]

The last time she'd met the admin here, he'd been recovering in the aftermath of his Avatarship at the Cave of Origin. It had been an antagonistic encounter, and though he'd seemed grateful for her mentorship after, part of her wondered if he truly understood the bond they both shared.[break][break]

A sense of guilt and responsibility spurred her to knock on his door, clearing her throat.[break][break]

"Cross? It's Fiorelli. Are you open to visitors?"

[break][break] Emotions churned beneath a growing tide, feverish memories brought to the surface. The image of THEO BECKETT glaring at him in that hidden cave, embroiled with feelings of resentment that had long been thought to have been buried between them. Theo was supposed to have forgiven him for his father's sins, Theo was supposed to have been his mentor, Theo was supposed to have understood —

[break][break] Theo had burned him at the stake.

[break][break] Theo, who had been birthed in the fire's of Kanto's cruel regime, was not a man who knew kindness or understanding. Much like Jayden, he had never been taught to wield it.

[break][break] The only language he knew was cruelty.

[break][break] 'Mischa, you are weak.'

[break][break] WEAK. WEAK. WEAK. WEAK.

[break][break] The smell of burning flesh and sweet healing water mingle as Rocket's medics attempt to cure the damage left by THEO BECKETT's training. For his own good, he'd said. Isn't that what everyone always said? Wasn't that what Calem Pollet had said, wasn't that what Dmitri had said?

[break][break] At the sound of Elisabeth Fiorelli's voice and a screen door pushed open, Jayden blinked up. Around him, several medical staff were still attempts to re-dress his wounds. The parts of his body that were visible were still scorched to the touch, smoothed with healing salve. Though Theo had certainly healed him with LIFE DEW, that could only do so much.

[break][break] "Elisabeth?" he echoed. "What... are you doing here?"

[break][break] He winced as one of the nurses pressed gauze to a wound.

She regretted stepping into the room immediately.[break][break]

Far too many people littered this small space filled with the visceral stench of burning flesh. That familiar sensation stirred a churning in her stomach, and she fought back a powerful desire to retch.[break][break]

Her complexion noticeably paled as her face greened with the unwanted memory of flame-scorched skin, and she turned to depart, held back only by the pitiful sound of the admin's voice.[break][break]

"What... what are you doing here?"[break][break]

She winced at the accusation; in truth, she had no reason to be here. Her curiosity had merely led her astray, as it so often did. That was all.[break][break]

A foot moved to step forward before another cry interrupted her.[break][break]

"I... I don't think I'm ready for another training session just yet."[break][break]

She froze in the doorway, stunned by his honest and cruelly misguided assumption. Was that what she seemed like to him? Someone who saw him as a tool to use and abuse to Rocket's liking, with no concern for the man behind the machine?[break][break]

Wasn't that how Rocket saw her?[break][break]

"Jayden." His name tasted strange and familiar on her tongue. She wasn't sure if she liked it. "I don't know what happened to you, but whatever it is, I can see that what you need is healing. I'll leave you to the care of the medical staff."[break][break]

And once more, she tried to escape the horrible sight before her.

The guilt in his words were clear. Jayden knew his position better than anyone. Although he had just recovered from THEO BECKETT cruelty, he knew that it was duty as her subbordinate to make sure that he was ready for her — after all, it was him who had asked for her help, for her guidance in the way of the Gods.

[break][break] Still, he awaits her response. He blinks.

[break][break] It shocks him when she turns away from him, and the guilt swarms his throat again, desperate for approval.

[break][break] "Wait - "

[break][break] Jayden sends a look at the medical staff that are attempting to tie him down, eyes flashing a brief silver-blue that has them fearfully stepping away. He stumbles away from the bed and towards Elisabeth Fiorelli, reaching for her wrist.

[break][break] "I'm sorry, don't go."

[break][break] Not reaching the effect his frigid touch may have.

He moved with startling speed for a man who'd been bedridden moments before.[break][break]

The sea of medical staff parted fearfully as the wounded admin reached for her -- and Elisabeth let out a pained sound despite herself at the bone-chilling iciness of his grip on her wrist.[break][break]

"What do you think you're doing, Cross?" she hissed at him as she yanked her arm away, all softness in her having vanished the moment he transgressed the distance between them. "Don't act foolish. You... Never mind."[break][break]

At this proximity she had an all-too-intimate view of his burn wounds, and she shut her eyes defensively, voice raising loudly to speak to the staff gathered:[break][break]

"Restrain your patient. Now. Unless you require me to do so for you?"

She had said it once. Suffering was a language they both knew well — him, for his time in Rocket, and her for... whatever had transpired in her days before then.

[break][break] The medical staff all flinched when the Underboss' voice rose to command them. It was a command they were used to, especially when it came to the likes of the Cursed in the last few weeks. How many times had they been told to restrain him? How many times had they failed?

[break][break] A withering look in their direction had them halted, ice-blue gaze willing them to cease.

[break][break] "That won't be necessary," he said, with a shake of his head. He peeled himself back from her wrist, peering up at her with ice-blue eyes. "They've already done their job. I'm just here are a precautionary measure."

[break][break] Some of the wounds had already begun to fade — though without the intrusion of bryan delarosa into the medbay, it would be some time before he'd healed completely.

"Delarosa?" Elisabeth echoed, an incredulous lift of her eyebrow conveying her thoughts on the matter. "I see. Things are as drastic as that, hm?"[break][break]

She narrowed her eyes at him, lips pursed in disapproval, before her glare turned to the gawking staff. Again her voice rose, this time colder in its command.[break][break]

"If all you are here to do is monitor the admin, then you are dismissed. I can wait with him until the Beast's arrival."[break][break]

The palpable cloud of irritability around her urged them out the door, one by one, until it closed behind them to leave the two Ruinous Avatars alone. Elisabeth once more fixed the admin with her piercing gaze, crossing her arms with disappointment at something unspoken.[break][break]

"How did this happen?" she asked, short and to the point as she indicated his wounds.

Drastic. Perhaps not — he and Bryan had always been close, especially in the recent months since his ascension to avatarship. But Jayden does nothing to correct her misconception, simply watching as she bids the rest of the medical staff away with the venomous tongue that her reputation is so well known for.

[break][break] It is Rocket's hierarchy that dictates them all to leave, though, and also the very same hierarchy that keeps Jayden in place, even under Elisabeth Fiorelli's unforgiving stare.

[break][break] Jayden, however, is nonplussed by it. He had been on the receiving end of that stare long enough to know it's meaning.

[break][break] "I was training," he says honestly. And then, because he only thinks of it, he adds, "With Underboss THEO BECKETT."

There was no curiosity in the way she phrased her statement, instead maintaining a slow-building irritation at all she had yet to comprehend. For all her forced restraint, the intensity of her reaction nonetheless smoldered in her eyes.[break][break]

She leveled him with a searching look, unconvinced by this explanation. Another acidic retort escaped her with a sigh as she waved a hand airily at his bandages.[break][break]

Elisabeth Fiorelli would find no answer in his eyes when she looks, nothing except the bandages that wrap around his injured form, and the blankness of a child unfettered.

[break][break] For her confusion beckons his own, because he does not know where he could have gone wrong in his explanation. 'It should be obvious,' he thinks, but for some reason it isn't. Because he has failed, somehow, in explaining it.

[break][break] So, loyal and obedient to a fault, to the chains that bind him, Jayden dips his head to her.

[break][break] "He was testing the control of my powers," he said instead, thinking of another way to explain it. "It was my fault for not being able to keep him at bay long enough."

[break][break] His face crumples.

"Why do you apologize to me, Cross?" she asked him flatly. "Which fault of yours compels you to grovel before me?"[break][break]

The sight of him, head bowed and face crumped with sorrowful regret, angered her. It was unbecoming of an admin of Rocket, and unbecoming of a mutual Ruinous Avatar.[break][break]

"Beckett isn't an Avatar," she began, examining her nails as if this clarified an obvious error in the man's reasoning. "If he were, he'd know that 'control' is far from intrinsic to our nature. Our will is forever at odds with the will of the being that bestows its power on us."[break][break]

She cast Jayden a sidelong glance, her mouth slanting into something displeased.[break][break]

"Were you so filled with hubris, that you believed you could master Chien-Pao in the span of mere months? Be reasonable."

He flinched.

[break][break] He'd done something wrong. Again.

[break][break] When he raised his head, confusion gleamed in his eyes. Compared to the other Underboss', he was still at a loss of how to treat her. It felt as though their relationships when they had been Admins had been somehow mangled by her promotion — as if the bridge that had been build was now covered in thorns and roses, and he still did not know how to trespass it.

[break][break] With THEO BECKETT, he understood that the other man valued obedience above all else, such was the nature of their connection. With Cillian Quinn, he knew his brother considered him close enough to not have to obey command — not unless necessary.

[break][break] But he and Elisabeth Fiorelli... were neither close enough to be called siblings, yet not distant enough to be strangers.

[break][break] "You are an Underboss," he said instead, deciding on honesty. "My rank is beneath yours."

[break][break] Perhaps he might have said more, if not for the fact that she continued on her own. His head tilted as he tried to process the information.

[break][break] It felt as though sunlight had flooded the room, ushering in warmth to that neglected bridge, melting away the icy grip that had ensnared it's vines.

[break][break] To her question, he shook his head.

[break][break] "Of course not. That was the point - of the training, that is. That is why Underboss Beckett had me fight him. I mean, his Typhlosion."

The underboss scoffed out a disbelieving laugh, the very idea seeming to viscerally disgust her.[break][break]

None of that mattered, though, because none of that was the actual problem. The more she listened, the more annoyance flashed across her features, lips pressed together into a tighter and tighter line.[break][break]

"So to clarify, Beckett tested your abilities, and set you on fire when he surpassed the limits of your mortal coil?"[break][break]

Her eyebrows rose perceptively as she questioned him with narrowed green eyes.[break][break]

There would be more time, perhaps later, to discuss the differences they felt regarding Rocket's natural hierarchy. Of how she felt that they should behave, and how he had - in his lifetime - been taught to.
