The doors swung open and blazing firelight flooded into the darkened chamber. It did not bring warmth and safety however, but only more terror. Zev stood beside Howard, hands in his pockets, to gaze over the conquered city. [break][break]

Howard's questions drew Zev's attention from the sight. He glanced back at the pile of viscera and flesh that had once been a Pokémon. Though a simulation, it looked and smelled very real. [break][break]

"That's right." That the admin guessed so quickly both surprised and amused Zev. He kept the emotion from his face, however, as he started down the steps into the city. [break][break]

Their surroundings began to fray at the edges. A nearby building buckled from internal damage; a portion of its roof slid down and sideways toward Zev. Glancing up, he froze it in place with a thought, suspending it in the air above him, even as the scenario melted away. [break][break]

Turning, he stared straight at Howard with cold blue eyes. Crystals crawled up his neck and face. "And yes, I can." [break][break]

[attr="class","itemcoltext"]Team Rocket has traversed the simulation an innumerous amount of times. By doing so, they have been lucky enough to access a new stage: one that finally grants them answers as to Arceus’ whereabouts—and perhaps frustratingly, more questions.[break][break]

After the transition, you find yourself on an endless staircase. Each step glows bright with divine light. Gazing down at your feet, you realize the stair treads are transparent. Vertigo grips your stomach as you realize you are at an impossible height—but beneath you is what appears to be an endless void. If Hoenn was below you, it is so far away that it would be an indiscernible speck.[break][break]

The first few steps you take play high, haunting notes like piano keys. To the trained ear, they would hear the notes: G, C, F, C, G, E, B, F#.[break][break]

The man looked at him. He looked at Howard. His cold eyes reminded him of Chu-e Choi, Necrozma's prior Avatar.

No, they were different. Chu-e's eyes were dead, glassy. There was nothing to fear from a man who had nothing to fight for. There was nothing to fear from someone who could only look backwards towards better times. It was why Howard was not a threat. He believed in the future, but would not look towards it. He would not fight for it.

■■■'s eyes were cold. Alert. Calculating. There was a man there. A man who had interfaced with the divine. When ■■■ had stared into Necrozma's abyss, it blinked back.

Stop looking at me.

That was what made ■■■ terrifying, and why Chu-e wasn't. ■■■ had an objective, and he would reach it no matter what. If this universe didn't have it, well...

Stop. Don't think about it.

He stopped thinking about it.

"Impressive. That's a lot of steps, and my legs hurt." He'd play the jester for now. "Lessen our weight? I'd like an easy climb." Howard blinked once and turned his interest to the stairwell. He knew of this place, from reports and accounts.

"The Hall." Howard looked up at it. "I thought it'd be... grander. Larger."

Yet there was a simplicity to the divine. Arceus did not need to create overcomplicated spaces to proclaim its authority. That was for humans to try, when they attempted to supersede their creators.

"After you." Howard stepped aside for the Rocket Beast.

Zev was familiar with the signs of fear. How the skin of the face paled as blood drained out of it. Nervous tics and the trembling of hands. Widened eyes and shallow breaths. Darting glances and avoidant gazes. [break][break]

He stared at Howard until the subtle signs vanished beneath the force of the admin's self-control. Only then did Zev turn to contemplate their new surroundings. [break][break]

"Gods don't need to impress mortals with grandeur." [break][break]

The comment came unbidden, as if Zev's mouth had merely translated an outside thought. If he seemed fazed by it, he didn't show it; instead, he swept his gaze over the staircase and started to climb. At least for the first few steps. [break][break]

And then, easing gravity's hold on himself, he pushed off with one foot and soared up fifty steps. [break][break]

Pausing, he looked back down at Howard. The threads of gravity pulling upon the man burned bright in Zev's vision. "You next." [break][break]

CONTINUE ASCENDING THE STAIRCASE.

"Ah, that explains a lot." He responded, refusing to elaborate. There was a glint of bemusement in the man's eye. Internally, though, Howard wanted to scream.

He'd get that chance, soon.

"Hup!" Howard jumped off, underestimating the lightness of modified gravity. He flew through the air, did a somersault, and flapped his arms like wings. While in the air, he readjusted to land normally. His boots clicked against the divine staircase.

I meant to do that." Howard looked at Necrozma's chosen sheepishly. "I underestimated you."

A lie, but a white one.

As he took a step past his colleague, the words of heaven rang in their souls, or whatever ■■■ had that compensated for one. Howard's eye widened as he looked up and down the staircase. If there was something at the top, he couldn't see it.

"We're being rejected...!" The staircase glimmered with cracks as it began to fade from existence. The admin glared at ■■■, as if he were the reason for this great failure. Perhaps the sins of mortals was too heavy a load for this staircase to bear.

"Damn." Howard sat down on the glimmering steps and looked up. All bravado from his face. Instead, there was an expression of indifference. There was no hint of fear, like when he stared at ■■■. No bravado, no jokes. "How disappointing."

Howard's attempts at humor did not elicit even the slightest twitch in Zev's face. Instead, the Devourer leveled an unamused stare at the admin as he moved to continue up the staircase. [break][break]

Then the voice again—though, as before, it was less of a voice and more of a sensation that reverberated through Zev's entire being. Emotions flashed through him, and he caught the hint of displeasure before it disappeared into a flood of incomprehensibility. [break][break]

"What did you expect? This isn't real," he scolded Howard. Then he paused as he watched the staircase fade into nothing. "It exists so we can plan accordingly, for when we encounter the real thing." [break][break]

Zev cocked his head at Howard, suddenly curious. When he next spoke, his voice contained no hint of the thoughts behind his unflinching gaze. [break][break]

"If you did, do you think you could kill it?" [break][break]
