Whoever decided to send a walking skeleton into the Giant Chasm deserved to be shot. Bonus points if Chu-e himself had decided to go on his own, as it meant that Howard could finally rid himself of the former underboss.

Even if it did mean pulling the trigger. If it had been pulled earlier, Hoenn would've been grateful to him. Now, there was nothing to it. Killing Chu-e Choi felt more like a chore than something he genuinely wanted to do. Lives might've been saved if Necrozma's former Avatar had perished when he controlled Rocket. Now, it'd be like putting a pillow over a dying dictator's face and pressing down.

There was no point in it.

"Alright, that'll do it." Howard leaned against the lab and wiped his brow. "Let's make sure the base is secure, then head back in. I don't like being out here more than needed."

The Giant Chasm felt off to the admin, as if it was an ancient beast, stirring in the night. That didn't make sense, as the cave was a recent discovery, but still...

"Keep watch." Howard told his swarm of Sigilyth, which flew off. Howard's Claydol, meanwhile, stayed by his side. Howard trudged around the lab, inspecting the walls. "Hm."

He hated to admit it, but he felt naked without Regice. The golem was remarkably strong, stronger than anything Howard had trained, but it was still recovering. Instead, Howard had to rely on his normal Pokémon. Good and loyal, but not as powerful.

It felt dirty to admit that.

Unlike howard slayte, Chu-e didn't have a hair out of place. They were sitting perched on one of the more unimportant looking crates, a nail file in hand. Sharp edges being smoothed away with the careful grating from nimble fingers. Usual feigned passiveness was gone, replaced with mildly furrowed brows as they paid little attention to Howard or their surroundings.[break][break]

"Are the Beasts really so pathetic that Walsh would ask me of all people..." Howard might hear the irritated muttering as he finished up. An answer to a question he didn't ask. For the cosmic comedy of it.[break][break]

Blue eyes flicked up to regard Howard at the order, a small nod before pink Love Balls were flicked from their hand. A sharp whistle made the trio of pokemon's ears perk. The Mr. Mime vanished, but soon the gleam of Barriers would shimmer and warp around the whole base. The Carbink would chatter before burrowing into the ground at Chu-e's feet.[break][break]

Only the Delcatty would remain. A great, gluttonous, malicious beast. This was the kind of Shadow pokemon that many in Rocket whispered about. Malformed and mutated; the Delcatty wouldn't have fit inside the tent. Massive in sheer size on top of just being fat. She eyed Howard with some thinly veiled malevolence, licking her feline chops as if sizing him up for a meal.[break][break]

Chu-e grasped her by the chin and forced her face away from the Admin. She still gave Howard one lingering, hungry look before lumbering off to do patrols as ordered.[break][break]

Joining Howard in the tent, Chu-e walked over to inspect the notes as if they understood them.[break][break]

"Something troubling you, Slayte?"

"One beast is birdwatching and another almost died on the battlefield." Howard pointed out, unamused at Chu-e's bleating. "It's a big cave system, and all beasts are occupied. That means everyone needs to pull their part, even you."

Howard enjoyed fieldwork more than most, but he was still an admin whose tasks relied on him to remain behind a desk. The fact that Team Rocket actually allowed and insisted on him taking to the field for research spoke volumes about how much they were putting into this Area Zero expedition.

Or, in this moment, the Giant Chasm. Between the caves and the lush plains, Rocket was stretched very thinly. Howard wasn't particularly pleased about being stuck with Chu-e, but it gave him a grim satisfaction to watch him struggle out in the field.

At least his Pokémon were useful, beyond the large Delcatty. Howard didn't know how much Chu-e was feeding her, but he had heard rumors of her when he was a grunt. She was a great beast, and that seemed appropriate. Howard didn't appreciate becoming her next meal, although it came at the expense of needing Chu-e's help.

"Fox." It was a gentle correction, but a firm one. He'd forgive Grigori Sokolov for calling him otherwise, as with Tempest Quinn and Shred Zeppelin . Chu-e did not get such a luxury, although he seemed to ignore the warnings whenever Howard uttered them. "This place..."

He held up a photo of the region and compared it to several recently drawn maps. His frown deepened as he pushed air out through his teeth.

"...should not exist. It should be impossible."

Chu-e almost opened their mouth to protest. Almost. But in the end, they stayed silent at the warning and order. Chu-e remembered time when, broken and beaten, they had been forced onto battlefields in Kanto. 'Almost Dying' had never been a good enough reason in Rocket.[break][break]

"Still not used to Hoenn?" Was teased, but it didn't sound amused. Chu-e knit their brows together and plucked the photo delicately from howard slayte's hand to give it a closer look.[break][break]

A deep frown settled on their face.[break][break]

"I don't know how Hoenn hadn't collapsed in on itself yet." Was muttered now. Placing the photo back on the table, Chu-e circled Mauville, Fortree, and Lavaridge with their fingers. "These areas are all hollow underneath, too. Can this stuff spread?"[break][break]

"It hasn't collapsed because the region hasn't realized that it should, yet. Hoenn has a mind of its own." Howard was a geologist, and even he wasn't sure that the Giant Chasm was capable of existing. It was a wonderful closed ecosystem, but it had no reason to exist.

Between it, hints of the Vessel of Ruin, and the various other phenomenon in the area, it seemed like a hotspot for activity in the future. With that in mind, Rocket had to take every advantage it could get.

"Here." He tapped Fortree. "There are underground Tera Crystals here, as well. I've seen them for myself. If this system links across the region..."

That was it. Hoenn was done, and they'd be facing a catastrophe on the level of the Darkest Day. Except it wouldn't be a great historical battle, but a slow rot as the region turned to crystal. There would be no great song about that, only despair.

"It can spread." He shook his head. "I told them that we should've dealt with this sooner. Nobody listens to me."

Chu-e says it with a shrug. It's not some insult. Just a matter of fact. With so many working pieces in Rocket, hell in the League as well, you would always have those who valued churning forward blindly. Chu-e hadn't been able to change that as an Underboss, he doubted that howard slayte as an Admin would have much chance.[break][break]

A near perfectly manicured nail taps on where they are now.[break][break]

"Could this be the heart of it? Crystals will stop growing if you apply the right solvent. If we could figure out what that it, it could be slowed down."

When the former underboss utters the words, Howard recoiled slightly, as if he had been slapped.

"How honest of you." His voice was as dry as the deserts he once traveled, his tone shifting like expansive dunes in the scorching hot winds. "The truth is harmful, y'know."

Despite that, he didn't seem offended by the words. Instead, it amused the admin, as if Chu-e had finally, against all odds, said something that made sense. He was right. The truth didn't care for emotions, and history was painted by the victor. Despite that, there was only on absolute truth.

Rocket did not care. That was the truth.

Yet Chu-e was weak, and his vision lacking. Howard would do what he couldn't, because he knew that when the chips were down, humanity would succeed and change, rather than face extinction.

"We haven't found such a solvent. Tera Crystals are borderline indestructible barring certain scenarios that we can't easily replicate. They're... static. Despite being the font of change, they themselves resist our attempts to do so."

If anything, he was marginally impressed by Chu-e's knowledge of crystals.

And they would know, since they dealt in both.[break][break]

"Nothing's indestructible. We'll just have to keep trying." Chu-e was livelier today than usual. Yet that particular statement had a bit more heat to it than they normal showed. [break][break]

Memories boiled to the surface as Chu-e looked at the crystals. Of sitting in a bathtub and frantically rubbing at black crystal growths. The chemical cocktail they had made burned the exposed skin. They would step out chapped and bleeding and clawed raw from their own fingers.[break][break]

It sticks in the back of their mind.[break][break]

Eyes were locked onto one picture of the crystals- when they snapped out of the trap of their own mind, it was snatched up.[break][break]

"What's this?"[break][break]

They point to a smudged puddle next to the deposit. A few small holes in an odd pattern. Foot prints.[break][break]

Looking at them, Chu-e felt a shiver of fear run down their spine.

Lies were poison. Howard could not deny that.

Yet poison was a draught that one willfully swallowed when the back was pressed to the wall. Lies were toxic, but living was sweet. When in a den of wolves, sometimes it was best to lie in order to live another day, rather than be torn apart on the spot.

Lies were poison, but they could be slow acting. It could take years for poison to do its work and burn its way through a system.

"Only the intangible can be indestructible. Something will break them, but I'm unsure what." Dreams were indestructible, as were other ideas and concepts that existed within the human cognition. Howard suspected that Chu-e would mock that idea, so he refused to elaborate on it.

His eye twitches as fear grips him. His eye flicked to Chu-e's shadow, as if expecting dark crystals to emerge from it. After shuddering and grappling with himself, he inspects the footprints.

"I've seen these." They were popping up all over the Giant Chasm and Area Zero, always accompanied by fear. "I... recognize these. No. That's wrong. I have a theory."

He hadn't been at the Ancient Tomb, but he had heard of what was there. There were only a few Pokémon that Howard knew of that could cause something like this.

The chill of fear passes... then surges back once more. It makes their fingers shake. This is quickly hidden in balled up fists, hands and elbows pulled close to the chest.[break][break]

It didn't feel natural.[break][break]

"You talk like you're in a poem sometimes. It's cute."[break][break]

It's said in a breathy, shaking rush. Unclear if it's just a joke or some genuine compliment ripped out of Chu-e's core. They close their eyes and try to count backwards from twenty until the fear leaks out of them.[break][break]

It feels hollow after.[break][break]

Chu-e flicks the picture with the footprints and releases a breath they didn't realize they were holding.[break][break]

"If this is some more Legendary Pokemon bullshit I'll puke." This one a clear half joke, unfriendly. They nod their head for howard slayte to continue.

The admin's frown deepened as fear filled his soul. As it trickled out, it was replaced with the passion that drove him. He would've completely quaked and shut down from that fear before, but he had more drive now. Passion. Dreams. They were things that were good to sup upon.

Fear. Cowardice. He was a coward, but he was slowly improving.

"You talk like you've given up on life." He looked at Chu-e with disgust. Despite that, he didn't strike the former underboss. "I wish you'd stop that."

Chu-e had been chosen by Necrozma, and that was where his life had ended. It didn't have to be, though. He could've become something more. There could've been more beyond the event horizon that Necrozma had chained Chu-e within. Now that it was gone, Chu-e should've moved on. He should've been free.

Yet he was still chained by a ghost. There was no greater tragedy in Howard's opinion than giving up on life.

"Get ready to vomit, then." Howard gave Chu-e the side eye. "It's that vessel from the Ancient Tomb. Beast Zeppelin told me about it."

Chu-e gives the other a raised brow, a small and impish grin. It's the most he's felt like himself since he tried to make Cillian Quinn laugh in that lab. Since he became second fiddle to some parasite who used his body like a fucking meat mecha.[break][break]

There is an allegory for his past hidden in there. If only Chu-e cared to find it. He thinks it might make him laugh.[break][break]

But, Chu-e only sighs when howard slayte answers and opens his mouth. Tongue out, he presses a finger halfway down his throat and make an exaggerated 'bleh!' noise.[break][break]

"It's always legendary pokemon! I get so tired of hearing about them. One of them decides to cause a problem, finds some nice Avatar to settle down with, and then you never hear from it again. I swear, it's all some big show for them! I bet this weird vessel just wants some humussy like the rest of them. Fucking drama queens. Force your company on someone till you convince them to settle for you like the rest of us!"[break][break]

Chu-e throws up their hands and steps away from the desk during the little rant. An ear piece if swiped from their pocket and popped in; a quick click and Howard might realize that his own is synced to it.[break][break]

"I'm going to do a sweep. Call for backup if I'm not back in ten."
