The precious times she had found herself in this scenario, her companions had refused to help. And each time, they would be swung at and chased by an angered chef, determined to serve them up just to 'meet quota'.[break][break]

Tilting her head towards the left, she spies Navy out of the corner of her eye. Then she lowers her voice, beckoning for him to lean in close before she whispers.[break][break]

Eris speaks, and Navy barely registers the words. The butcher looks familiar. Intimately familiar. He wonders if it is a different person each time, or if the butcher always wears a monster’s face. Eyes narrow into steel slits, stabbing down to the butcher’s blades offered.[break][break]
It would be easy to reach down, grab the knife. A lycan leap would land him behind the monster. One smooth thrust would plant the blade in its shoulders. That would glitch the simulation, so it defeats the point. [break][break]
He has been down that road before. Picking up the knife, he moves to the Slowpoke. Hovering over the creature, he gets to work. There’s only one way to see what happens. [break][break]
“Did you know these guys are probably the most ethical source of meat? They don’t feel pain, some guy told me. Don’t even notice the tail’s gone.” It’s a fine enough story. He slices the tail, the Slowpoke not even noticing its absence.

“Helps ‘em get away from predators, too.” Even if they’re in a grisly butcher shop, he finds something to be positive about. It’s a job. It’s honest butchery, as opposed to soldiery. That, he feels, is butchery dressed up in societal pretense and dogma.[break][break]
It helps to pretend to be elsewhere. He imagines himself on a nice beach, or sleeping under a poisoned sky. He wonders how long this will persist. These poor devils should get to relax in an aquarium after this, but instead they will simply disappear back into code. Someone else will come along. It’ll repeat. Again and again and again, ad nauseum.[break][break]
There’s horror in that, to only exist within the confines of code.[break][break]

“I know you think you’ve had a lot of bad times, but you’ve also gotten to see some really awesome stuff. 13 year old Navy would be jealous.” And he would. Thirteen year old Navy simply dreamed of Rayquaza. Eris as seen him, and more legendaries besides. That Navy dreamed of a better world, even as he got in playground brawls. Eris has seen much of what the world has to offer.[break][break]

A dry laugh breaks his words. He imagines her going into some academic setting, telling the scholars there how it is.[break][break]

He's right. No one can replace her momma. Nor her pa for that matter. Chu-e Choi had come close in soothing many wounds of her heart, but had only left more in his wake.[break][break]

Despite the people he names, the memories he evokes, his old man knowledge feels a little empty, doesn't really help to dull that swirling sensation in her chest. Perhaps, she is a greedy child. Hungering for a bit more than just company.[break][break]

The words tumble in her head, sloshing upon her tongue. No matter how she tries to put it together, to mould a sentence, it all feels too bitter. Makes her feel like perhaps, she is an ungrateful child. No longer able to treasure that which she is given after having a taste of what life was meant to be like.[break][break]

"I guess." She eventually speaks.[break][break]

His eyes respond to the intrusion with absolute apathy. Only a clenched fist on the edge of the table hints at underlying displeasure. When the man departs, Navy walks out. Knowing she is curious by nature, he expects Eris to follow. Outside, he sees Lower Slateport.[break][break]
More than that, he recognizes the street. Without thinking, he takes her hand. They’re close to somewhere he knows.[break][break]
“Hey, hey. I know it’s just a sim, but I wanna show you a place that isn’t open anymore. Somewhere before your time.” And he leads her out, knowing they’re fighting against the clock. They stroll through a simulated street to a ramen stand. Sitting down, he throws pokedollars on the counter so quick it’d make a head spin.[break][break]
“Two specials, please.”[break][break]
“Comin’ right up!” The old man, dead for years in 2024, grins. He gets to work, soon depositing two bowls before them.[break][break]
“It’s not real, but that just means we can hog out. Come on, Eris. Let’s eat up.”

A little more conscious thought allows her to set it down, her knuckles and palm aching under the chilly waters.[break][break]

It takes a bit, but she eventually turns her gaze to Navy, watching as he takes the first leave. And she'll follow, her eye always following him, even when his attention is turned to the city that sprawls before them. That gaze soon falls upon the way he takes her hand, her first few steps a little unsteady as she tries to keep up.[break][break]

'Connie, you walk too fast!'

Echoes of years long past follow her through the streets.[break][break]

'Admitting your legs are short, huh Rosie?'

Sunstreaked blonde, just like hers. Eyes so blue that she wonders if the ocean on a good day would even compare.[break][break]

When they reach their destination, she too will follow his lead in taking a seat. A vast storm of aromas sweep through the stand, spices and ingredients both familiar and foreign scattered all throughout that tiny kitchen. It's just the two of them seated at the counter, the chef pouring all his passion into a craft he's perfected over years.[break][break]

The bowl is simple. A simple meal that probably carries so much memories for Navy. He will enjoy this. He wants her to know this joy too. And yet, as she stares at the ramen before her, whatever little reflection that ripples in the simmering broth, she realises that everything's a little blurry.[break][break]

"... huh."[break][break]

Rubbing at her eye doesn't make it any better, the back of her palm left with streaks that glisten under that warm light.[break][break]

"huh..."[break][break]

It's weird. No matter how she tries, it just doesn't seem to get any better.
