rarely does she run late. [break][break]

but here she is, struggling slightly. her exams have been over, and she's just about freed up her time, but she was still getting used to the fact that she didn't have to stay up late into the night studying anymore. rather.. the time she's spend studying in the past has turned into time she'll spend on research. unfortunately, due to this, she fears she'll be slightly late for her gym appointment. [break][break]

after the first gym challenge against Josh Devlin , she won't lie and will admit that she's feeling a little more confident, despite the fact that she isn't much of a fighter. with all the disasters happening around hoenn, she's thinking that maybe it would be a good time to learn - and what better way than to gauge her progress than a battle against someone who is seasoned? [break][break]

thankfully, she is escorted to the battlefield. there, she sees the leader, who is already prepped and ready, from the looks of it. "hello." she starts, a small, practiced smile to her lips. "i apologize for the wait."

She was at Galar. Navy makes a point of looking into those who challenge his gym. Most are kids with something to prove. This one’s all grown up, someone who toiled under a poisoned sky along with most of the League’s high command. They are bound inexorably to the battle between heroes and a great skeletal dragon.[break][break]
Marisol is brought to a beachside pitch. Instead of being brought down to the battlefield below, he’s decided to take this challenger on in front of a crowd. It’s good for morale, plus his dragons favor the open sky.
“No skin off my back. Ready to go whenever you are.” His Pokemon already float above the field. At a glance, it looks like a terrible match-up for the dragon gym leader: a Dragapult and a Dragalge. Both look on, ready for the fight to start. This is, after all, what they have been trained to do.[break][break]
“Seems to me like you’ve got a few tricks up your sleeve with your duo. Let’s see who can outthink the other.” Cracking his knuckles, he blows his whistle. The battle’s on, and she has the first move.[break][break]
"Question, if you're the kind who can think and talk: why d'you wanna take the gym challenge?"

marisol doesn't know. [break][break]

not the educational purpose of this gym, but she was never one to play a clean game, anyhow. marisol was never much of a battler either, despite the pokemon she has ever lined up in her repertoire. she was never someone who would happily battle, and never someone who would happily scheme or plot her way to victory - but she knows how to play dirty. [break][break]

isn't that all she needs? [break][break]

at the whistle blow, marisol throws out two pokeballs; a shedinja and sylveon pop out respectively. one is a cheery, hyperactive dog whereas the other is a husk of what it used to be, and yet still sentient. shortly afterwards, she pulls another ball-like object in her hand, and raises it to resonate with the shedinja. marisol says nothing, for the glow and sheen of ELECTRIC yellow reflects off the floating ghost pokemon. [break][break]

"sero, misty terrain. apo, metal claw." she makes a quick command to both pokemon, the sylveon releasing a MISTY TERRAIN to protect both herself and the SHEDINJA from status effects, whereas the shedinja wastes no time sharpening its golden body to rush with METAL CLAW towards the DRAGALGE. [break][break]

following the command, marisol herself mulls the question over. the woman hums, and her head tilts whilst pondering her response. "to gauge myself." she'll admit, with the most honest answer. "because i want to get stronger."[break][break]

her tone is flat, and she's calculating, with eyes still on the two pokemon. his two pokemon.

Judging by pure League regulations, the match is decided the moment she pulls out that orb. Navy is no stranger to gym circuits. Back when his kid brother was alive, they watched a lot of League matches together. Shedinja, funny ghost that it is, has proven a headache in regulation matches.[break][break]
He’ll give her credit where it’s due, she’s the first person to try and outthink the gym. Here before the crowd, he isn’t indisposed to pulling his usual tricks. The League has to maintain the illusion that all battles will be righteous, honorable things.[break][break]
So, he’ll see how this plays out. It’s more fun than forfeiting, and his dragons can take a beating.[break][break]
Besides, there’s a path to victory here. It just takes time.[break][break]
Whistling sharply, he looks to Fafnir.[break][break]
“Set up a protective wall.” The dragon does just that, setting up a reflective barrier. It’s just a bit too slow to prevent the metal claw from striking his poisonous seahorse.[break][break]
Dragalge’s response is to blast the electric bug full-on in the face with a dragon pulse. Its nature prevents the blow from proving fatal, but that’s not the point. His Pokemon aims to push it back, pin it down, and keep it in place.[break][break]
“Suppose for the sake of argument someone threw out a Flygon here and it used sandstorm. How would you deal with that?” He poses the question in a neutral tone, a teacher asking a student a question.

the shedinja is blown back, however not before it landed a solid hit on the poisonous dragon. [break][break]

the dragon pulse throws the little bug back, right before it could potentially follow up with any other physical attack. the misty terrain prevents any poison, which was the woman's main concern. rather than rushing back into the offensive, marisol snaps her fingers at the shedinja. "swords dance." she commands, sharply, to which the pokemon responds by honing their claws from their further position.[break][break]

on the other hand, the sylveon is snapped at shortly after, with marisol's command "at the dragapult" is briefly given. the sylveon, cheerful and bubbly as ever, gathers a concentrated orb of moonlight at the tip of her snoot. it charges, and the condensed fairy energy launches at the more vulnerable dragon. [break][break]

it's only after giving the commands do her ears perk up, and all things considered, her response is relatively quick. "we have sunny day." she'll willingly point out. flat as her tone may be, she tries to wear a smile (someone told her she looked better with one, though she'll still argue its truthfulness). "i am not the best battler.." her eyes narrow, and her head tilts "so thoroughly planning is the least i can do."

“Evade.” Navy’s command to his Dragapult is terse, two syllables shot out while a Sylveon’s blast closes in on him. Fafnir does not respond. Fafnir simply vanishes into thin air, leaving naught but empty space in its place. Phantom Force is a Dragapult’s greatest weapon, even more than its darts.[break][break]
“C’mon Algae, Sylvie still needs a dance partner.” The poisonous seahorse turns and sprays a shower of acid across the Sylveon. Even if the fae terrain offers magicked protection from poison, acid’s corrosive power is still a force to be reckoned with. The Pokemon’s back sits exposed to Shedinja, whose claws are freshly honed.[break][break]
“As for what you said,” he turns his attention to Marisol, “good idea for a Pokemon League match. What if a Rocket goon pulled out a Cyclizar, burned rubber ‘til the mist was gone, and their Zubat buddies bit both of your ‘mons?” Folding his arms, he remembers the times Rocket has tried to outnumber him. Xenon Antheil in particular loves pulling out all of her Pokemon, or so the reports go.[break][break]
“No formal rules on a battlefield, you know.”

ah, phantom force. [break][break]

something her shedinja has, but at least it temporarily reduces the number of targets to one. still, the sylveon huffs briefly - how dare it evade her moonblast. she's a sassy one, and the trainer resists the urge to rub the bridge of her nose. "sero, we're still in a battle.." an official one, with no life-or-death undertones for once, but still something that should be taken seriously. she can pout all she wants after getting home. [break][break]

as childish as the sylveon is, she's sharp enough to catch the glimpse of ACID, as is her shedinja, and the trainer. "stop it." she gives a swift command to the ghost pokemon, whose recently sharpened claws are brandished at her words. the ominous shell closes in using an overcast shadow, making it to the poison dragon in little to no time with SHADOW SNEAK. though the attack wasn't meant to do much damage, they hoped that it would prevent a direct hit. [break][break]

on the flip side, the sylveon's pretty white fur is scathed by the acid - something that she winces at, and is certainly not happy about. [break][break]

"recover." she commands the sylveon, who - quite cutely - gives a wink to conjure a heart at the DRAGALGE hoping to land a DRAINING KISS to restore what damage she took.[break][break]

marisol, though her eyes and ears are kept on alert for the DRAGAPULT, ponders the question. "electric tera saves the ghost typing, however.." her eyes narrow, and though she'll chuckle at her deliberated words, she's fully aware of the weight of them - and the irony. "... a gun would suffice, no?"[break][break]

not that she owned any firearm to begin with; her pokemon were weaponry enough.

Her words bump the battle down to a secondary consideration. Looking across the field at the medic, his eyes narrow. He does not judge, but he questions, ponders a matter of great importance. Nothing exists in the world save the two of them and that question.[break][break]
The battle rages in the background. Fafnir reappears behind Sylveon, exploding with a blast of ghostly energy. The phantom force has come home to roost. Dragalge, possessed of a dragon’s nature, has focused its attention upon the pixie. Even with a Shedinja baring down upon the seahorse, its dangerous red eyes are all for the fairy – natural enemy of dragonkind.[break][break]
Shadow sneak shears scales from her back, scales which will need to be regrown later. Beneath, bare snakeskin is bared. Dragalge bellows, and with that bellow comes smoke. The smokescreen obscures the battlefield. Onlookers cough, but they’re fine. It’s just smoke.[break][break]
“You think you could do it? Kill someone?” He uses the smoke to quietly make his way around the battlefield. This is not a conversation to be shouted over a pitch.

words she bites back, maintaining her relatively calmer exterior. marisol of all people should know how heavy a life weighs, and just how easy it is to take away; she's been exposed to too much on both the battlefield and the bed (although if you asked her about the former, she wouldn't be able to say from where or from when). though battle becomes an afterthought in the face of their conversation, marisol approached the gym for a reason - that reason was to test herself. [break][break]

she trusts her pokemons' judgements, especially when they already went over the battle plan. her shedinja is unaffected by the SMOKESCREEN, as a ghost with no lungs to speak of. instead, the ghost pokemon sharpens their claws with another SWORDS DANCE, hooks now even more deadly than the last. [break][break]

on the other side, the sylveon lets out a triumph huff as her body heals from DRAINING KISS... only for more damage to chip off at her with the sudden appearance of the PHANTOM FORCE out of nowhere. the pixie huff, and puffs, before repeating the same move as before - this time aimed at the vulnerable one as they were still close in range. [break][break]

meanwhile, the trainer remains where she is, lifting an arm over the lower half of her face. she coughs, softly, as the smoke and the mist mix together. "likely not," she lies, but he doesn't need to know "my job is to save lives, not take them."[break][break]

it's ironic she says so with the blood still fresh beneath nail beds.

“It’s a hell of a thing, killing a man.” He speaks from experience. To take a life is to carry them with you forevermore. “You take away all he ever was, and all he’s ever gonna have.” There’s plausible deniability in there, somewhere. He’s a soldier now, holding one of the Elite Four seats. Though he isn’t officially in the military like MATIAS SILPH, he’s part of the command structure. A soldier, inevitably, kills enemy combatants.[break][break]
Still, he speaks the word like a confession, a plea for her to not think that way. There are some roads that people simply cannot come back from. Red stains never wash out right.[break][break]

He turns to watch the shadows of his Pokemon move through the fog. Both are desperately fighting the Sylveon, fighting the clock. If they can take her down before she can spread more mist, the Shedinja’s as good as gone. Dragalge meets the kiss with a sweep of a poison tail, oozing with venom. Fafnir launches himself high into the air with a u-turn, striking the pixie and using the cover of mist and smoke to take careful aim.

how dare they?[break][break]

the SYLVEON wants to ask. surely, she feels so popular when there are two dragon pokemon who are out for her head. though she had healed the majority of the damage sustained, it's chipped away slightly by the U-TURN. as the dragon flies away. on the other hand, there's a POISON TAIL coming at her from the other side - although the poison one seems to neglect the SHEDINJA who quickly, with SHADOW SNEAK, sinks from the sylveon's shadow to take the poisonous tail.[break][break]

though pokemon are lashed by the impact, the deadly poison isn't able to come into direct contact with the fairy. both pokemon are thrown back by the blow, however the sylveon stands - parasitic little fairy she was. rather than doing as she did earlier, however, she gazes to the shedinja, copying the stat increases with PSYCH UP. [break][break]

though her pokemon are fighting for their lives, marisol is left.. slightly uneasy at the leader's prodding. she knows, how ever reluctant she may be to admit it. "unfortunately, it's necessary." she doesn't like her response (the reality stings her throat when the words leave her lips). "sometimes the only way to stop the killing is by killing the source."[break][break]

“Uhuh.” One word laced with skepticism is served in answer. Temptation is there to delve deeper, to prod, to see what secrets hide behind the word. Ultimately, it isn’t his place. Instead, he pulls out a pair of pokeballs. Both Pokemon are recalled into their balls.[break][break]
“Well, it should go without saying, but you’ve more than earned the badge. Nothing I can really teach you.” And just like that, with no real climax or fanfare, the battle is over. Without a solid counter to the Shedinja, there’s no point in prolonging the inevitable. As much as he enjoys fighting, and watching his Pokemon fight, he does not relish pointless pain.[break][break]
“Here. Something to remember me by.” A badge is plucked from inside his jacket. The steely valor badge is offered to Marisol. “Congrats. Come on back down sometime. Saw your file before the match. I’d love to talk to you about Galar sometime.”
