Eyes closed, he listens to her answer. It is a hard thing, facing the end with dignity. People think it is easy to face oblivion, right up to the moment where there’s no turning back.[break][break]
“That’s a warrior’s answer.” He says finally, after she finishes. “You’ve got virtue. Can’t say that about most people I take down here. Just one thing you need to understand.”[break][break]
Stepping off his Cyclizar, he lords over her from atop granite. Bringing two cupped fingers to his lips, his whistle sounds across the battlefield like a call to arms. Even Fafnir, thought caught within the ball, emerges. Every monster gathered here swarms down to attack.[break][break]
“You know what virtue’s last reward is, Robin?”[break][break]
Snorlax and Robin are beset on all sides. Dragon darts shoot down from the heavens. Thin Lizzy charges straight on with a dragon rush, her wheels burning the ground beneath her. She slams headlong onto the wall of fat, attacking it with everything that she has.[break][break]
Toshinori launches up from the waves, assuming a much more imposing form. Laughing, he plays the part of a grinning villain. Hand balling into a fist, the dark knight slams Snorlax with a drain punch.[break][break]
Blow after blow after blow. It is as relentless as his own baptism of fire.[break][break]
“Death.”

Okay, she lets her guard down a little.

He's talking about virtue and warrior philosophy, and she feels pretty proud of herself and her performance despite the faults in both. But he whistles, prompts her with a question, and his whole team is coming straight at her. She balks, but Snorlax is no slouch. He picks her up and tosses her far into the field, into the small ocean he's generated from surf. She squeaks in the air and lands hard into the water, with little dignity at all.

Snorlax has too little time for the coordinated attacks coming his way but creates a hammer arm on both sides to punch at the Cyclizar at his side and the Toshinori from above. Robin hears the impacts as she resurfaces and pulls her pokeball immediately, retrieving the fainting Snorlax. He upheld his end and then some; he proved time and time again a willingness to fight til the last breath.

She might need it someday. But not today.

"If fighting til the end results in death, but lying down and taking it does the same, what are you saying I should do?" Her heart hangs heavy in her throat. She'll owe both of her pokemon an apology dinner and day of relaxation. She still stood by her answer. She could never turn tail on Hoenn. Where could she go that would shelter her from the shame? How fast would she have to run to escape the guilt?

“Whatever you think you have to.” Even if she doesn’t understand today, she will eventually. Everyone does, with enough time.[break][break]
“When you go, you don’t take anything with you. Not your pride. Not your money. Not even dignity. There’ll be people you leave behind that’ll miss you, but there’ll be plenty of folks who’ll be alive ‘cause you had the courage to stand up and fight when other people wouldn’t.” A press of a button lights up the gym. The fog machine blowing its noxious rotten bubblegum odor stops blowing. At last, the full scale of this place is shown.[break][break]
Navy walks towards Robin. The fight is over. For better or worse, she stuck it out until the end.[break][break]
“So if you think you’ve got to fight in this war, fight. If you want to stay home, there’s no shame in it. Either way, you’ve proved your valor today.” Unbuttoning his jacket, he reaches into an inner pocket and pulls out a valor badge. Navy hands it to Robin, lifting his shirt to show a scar across his chest as nasty as it is precise. It is exactly over his heart, deep enough to hint that the wound was fatal.[break][break]
“Like I said, we’re dealing with some real monsters.” Lowering his shirt, he turns, motioning for Robin to follow. There’s only one thing left to do. Navy’s own Pokemon tend to their own, collecting the unconscious and returning them to their pokeballs.[break][break]
At the corner of the battlefield sits a wall of solid granite. On it are inscribed carved words from past challengers. Below it are carving tools.[break][break]
“Take a minute. Look over the words. Add some of your own. Whenever you’re ready, we’ll head back up.”

When you go, you take nothing with you. It's a hell of a sentiment. For someone surrounded by ghosts, the idea of dwelling and haunting and carrying something with you in the end or for eternity is a deep-rooted subconscious belief that rarely requires introspection. It's unsettling to think about, that clean break, but her head is already spinning from the combat and the whiplash of unexpected curveballs. She files the thought away for later.

She takes away from the entire conversation that there are choices one makes and none of them are ever objectively right. She accepts the valor badge with wide eyes that turn to his scar. She narrowly avoids grimacing. Quietly, she utters, "How did you survive...?" She quickly realizes none of her pokemon have the ability to heal others. She holds her first gym badge in her hand and feels how deceptively light it is. She doesn't know what that means. "Thank you."

The wall is special. She recognizes a few names, which brings a smile to her face. She takes her time reading the wisdom of others. She's really struck by the simplicity of lam logan 's statement on the wall. What advice can she offer? What mark does she want to leave for others? She takes a deep, steadying breath. There isn't a lot of wisdom she feels empowered to leave, but for all of her missteps as a trainer and a Ranger, she knows one thing that guides her. She writes:

Walk your own path and never be lost.
