“A good person.” The three words are like slitting open an old wound. Time, near twenty years of the stuff judging by the weight of his soul, has dulled the wound. Yet still, like the twitching of phantom fingers on an amputated arm, he reaches for places where Gabe should be and finds nothing.[break][break]
“Thought he was gonna take on the world. Be the next champ of the region.” Like the kids in the movies, his bright gray eyes were filled with boundless determination. He was going to fill his pokedex. He was going to take down the strongest Elite Four the world had ever seen. He was going to defeat the bad guys and become a champion worthy of the name after taking down kyle lopez.[break][break]
His dream died in Sootopolis, as did he.[break][break]
“That kid would give you the shirt off his back. A real stickler for the rules, too.” A soft chuckle as he watches Zeus and Shuwen spar. Every hit Zeus lands on Shuwen, and he does manage to land quite a few, is met by a nod of approval from the lumbering bear. Thea and her Primeape will have to fight unregulated battles one day. When that day comes, Shuwen would see Zeus be strong enough to keep the girl safe.[break][break]
“Yeah…that’s the kind of person Gabe was.”

The exchanges of strikes between Shuwen and Zeus became faster with time, with Zeus picking up on what Shuwen was showing him, letting out grunts and oinks as he went through the exertion of the spar. During that moment, Thea is pleased to see her Pokémon looking so excited in a spar, though her attention was now entirely on Navy.[break][break]

His words poured her heart with a bittersweet feeling, that was expressed in a small smile as she heard him. The way he spoke of his brother was genuine and warm, and Thea could only wonder how it would be to meet Navy's brother. Someone as passionate as him was probably a wonderful person, the type that Thea would immediately get attached to. It all sounded... Too familiar though. The name reveal was more than enough to make a familiar face flash in Thea's mind, one that tickled her with nostalgia. A confident expression of a boy that made her smile whenever she saw him.[break][break]

Which was when Thea blinked, feeling her heart sink further in realization. "Gabe... Michael Navidson..." She muttered, in a loss of words at the moment. "N-Navy... You..." Her lips remained parted for a moment, hesitating. "Are you Gabe Navidson's brother?" Thea asked.[break][break]

"... We... We had a Gabe Navidson that always visited and trained with us whenever he was sticking around Slateport City." She said, feeling her lips pursing, with her eyes locked on Navy's as if wondering in a hint of fear and denial— Were they the same person? But she couldn't lie to herself, what were the chances of it just being a mere coincidence?[break][break]

“…yeah.” His voice is sad, distant. He remembers an old wound. It isn’t forgotten. The scar tissue is twisted with every step he takes. Time, especially Galarian time, has numbed the wound into something manageable. It will never be gone, not even Eternatus and His poisoned world could manage that, but he’s finally started to move on.[break][break]
And then, he meets another person who knew his brother. This city’s a big place. It has no soul. Yet, somehow, like a mythological deity of good fortune leading the way to the end of a rainbow, Gabe could find soul anywhere. This dojo overflows with the stuff. The air is thick with fighting spirit, a structured world where combat is something more than blood and strife.[break][break]
“My kid brother. Dang. You know…I tried hard to look for this place after he died. Couldn’t find the right dojo. Sorry, kid—Thea. Sorry I couldn’t tell you what happened to him sooner.” The conversation shifts to another of the many apologies owed to people. Inaction on his part, a propensity for sitting on the sidelines until it was too late, ended with his brother dead.[break][break]
“…your dad’s just looking out for you. It’s dangerous out there. Gabe thought he could take on the world. Then…the world took him down.” Grief, sadness, and anger at a world that would allow his brother die rumble through the words. Shuwen and Zeus’s spar seems secondary to all this, somehow.

Upon the confirmation, Thea's eyes blurred as she felt it tear up. Words couldn't leave her mouth just yet, with a feeling of a lump in her throat holding everything back. So her friend was really gone. The news caught her completely off guard, but she tried to not cry. Not in front of his brother. His pain was far bigger than hers, and she didn't want to make it worse. Still, she couldn't help but stay in silence for a moment, until her voice finally could escape from her lips, albeit cracked:[break][break]

"And here I was wondering if he was skipping his training every time I thought of him..." Thea only got a phone after she entered High School, which was around the time she has stopped seeing him. There was no way for her to even guess something bad had happened. And now, this...[break][break]

"N-No Navy, you don't need to apologize... We... I can't even imagine how painful it was for you, Navy..." Her eyes had a hard time to focus, but she tried to keep eye contact with Navy. The words about her father, and how the world had caught Gabe pierced Thea's heart, but she tried to avert those thoughts to something more positive, still not wishing to collapse into a wave of emotions right now.[break][break]

"... But I should've guessed he wasn't skipping anything... He always did his best in here. Gabe was really strong, and really good. Seeing him helped to feel encouraged to do better... Training... Training was more fun with him." She said with a cracked voice, with the bittersweetness of a nice and fond memory, that unfortunately would never repeat.[break][break]

"I missed him... But I see I will continue to..." Her eyes felt heavy as she held back her tears.[break][break]

Zeus hadn't noticed his trainer yet, with his focus being unbreakable. But Gominha and Belle, who were watching, did. They approached Thea and Navy, both seeming concerned about them.[break][break]

When he sees the tears threaten to flow, he hugs her. Maybe it’s inappropriate, hugging a stranger like that – but she isn’t a stranger. She was his friend, is his friend. Thea is proof, along with noah faber, kyle lopez, and all the rest who knew him, that Gabriel Navidson once lived. He does not find it odd, comforting someone else for what many would see as his loss. Loss is hard, a thousand needles piercing the heart.[break][break]
And so, he hugs her. It is not a long hug, but it is accompanied by a pat of the shoulder. Shuwen and Zeus’s battle is the soundtrack accompanying this decidedly human moment. Their blows are a reminder that the war, much like life, will go on.[break][break]
“It gets easier.” He assures her as he pulls away. “I promise.” Soft words, somber, spoken with a grief caught somewhere between a father’s and brother’s. So much of who he was went into raising Gabe.[break][break]
“He sure was enthusiastic, whenever he was gonna come spar with you.” Really, he has no excuse for not remembering her name, beyond the fact that Gabe spoke of all his friends with such enthusiasm while he was caught within the thrum of his own life.[break][break]
“Did he ever tell you he started training with Noah, the fighting gym leader, too? Kid was determined to get better…”[break][break]
A small pause, followed by words Thea is owed.[break][break]
“If you ever wanna visit his grave, I can take you. He’s buried out by Petalburg Woods.”

Thea wasn't opposed to a hug. She never was in moments of happiness, so she never would be in moments of sadness either. She returned it, wondering if Navy needed it as well. But the gesture was enough for her tears to finally roll down, not being able to suppress them back anymore. The man showed her that it was okay to cry, but she wasn't going to overdo, she could let it all out later when she would be able to think things over.[break][break]

When the hug was parted, she nodded to Navy's words. "It does... Not in a good way, but it does." Thea pursed her lips at the reminder of her own mother. She didn't cry as much as she did in the past, whenever she got emotional about her, so it got easier to handle. But the feeling... The huge gap that was left was still there. Thea was sure Navy felt the same for his brother. Still, she showed a faint and bittersweet smile to him, wiping the tears that dared to escape her eyes. "Thanks." She was grateful for the gesture.[break][break]

As she tried to recompose herself, she listened to Navy's words, nodding. "He really was. It is rare to find someone like him." She admitted, with a painful hint in her voice. Thea then felt a nudge and a gentle pull on her pants, looking down to notice Belle. Thea smiled weakly to the small Minccino, picking her up in her arms and caressing her head while looking at Navy.[break][break]

"Noah... Noah has visited us recently. So Gabe was training in a Fighting Gym? That is incredible... But in hindsight, doesn't surprise me too much, if there was anyone that could do it, being that young, it would be him!" She said, excited for his achievement, but saddened it didn't go anywhere.[break][break]

At the offer, Thea paused for a moment, considering it. "... Yes... I want to." She nodded. "But I need to think things over first. And I need something first. I can't go there to see him empty handed after so long."[break][break]
