Grit and commitment were the font of success. When an experiment failed, it was prudent to study why it failed and strive to improve it in the future. That was the burden of academia.

Regice stood proud, a grand construct from an era that had long since passed. A hollow vessel waiting to be filled by something grand. An alien pattern flashed across its face as it charged up its latent energy. Dynergy thrummed within frozen circuits and artificial veins.

"Get 'em." Howard snapped his fingers. "Fire."

A Zap Cannon fired towards the Walking Wake.

[attr="class","diana"]Diana wasn't expecting words of encouragement from Howard. She had expected gloating about her failed ideals or an "I told you so" instead.

So, she decided to move on and continue with his suggested mode of action. "Alright. First to faint, be unable to continue fighting, or surrender loses the battle."

Last time she saw his REGICE, it was against the WALKING WAKE. Now, it was facing her in battle. There seemed to be a chill in the air as it stood proudly in front of her and her terastallized Pokemon.

"Stay on your toes," she ordered her Paradox Pokemon.

And the battle with initiated by Howard. For a brief moment, her mind flashed back to her battle with Zev Harcourt. She tried to recall his words to her. "So practice regularly, with a lot of different people. Do the gym challenge, if you want."

What better way to fight than against a legend?

Her WALKING WAKE was boosted by the tera crystal, faster than the REGICE. It jumped, a side step, to avoid the ZAP CANNON as it let out a loud NOBLE ROAR. In an attempt to lower it's power, it then attacked with an instinctual move against ice-type: FLAMETHROWER.

"Agreed." Howard checked his watch. "Start."

The construct was blasted back by the ferocity of the beast's roar. Rubble vibrated. Gravel shook. Tera Crystals glimmered in their infinite facets as Walking Wake showed its might.

Howard hated these things. These half-bred mules born from fiction and reality, acting as an incomplete painting of a genuine creature. If Suicune bore witness to this creature, would it feel contempt, pity, or disgust? Maybe all of the above. Maybe none of the above.

Maybe it'd give no reaction as well.

Regice did not cringe in response to the roar. Machinery could not quake in response to fear. If it shook here, how was it going to wage its war against Eternatus?

As it fought, Howard didn't give an order. He didn't speak up in Regice's defense, or tell it to go on offensive. It was as if the Rocket Admin hardly cared. His face was a mask and he looked at Regice with interest, before turning to Diana. Still, he did not say a word.

"Good." He nodded to her. Howard didn't know if it was good. He wasn't particularly good on the battlefield. "Splendid."

Regice was basked in fire, but the golem did not melt. It took clear damage, but water didn't drip from the golem as ice melted away. The titan let out a shrill screech as the fire danced around it. In response, its pattern blinked once, then twice, then thrice. It Locked On.

A Hyper Beam quickly followed.

[attr="class","diana"]With the next attack LOCKED ON, there would be no way that her WALKING WAKE could avoid the HYPER BEAM. As the beam charged and struck her Pokemon, she couldn't help but think back to her battle with Zev.

She wondered if she'd lose, even with the boosted abilities the beast had from the nearby tera structure.

WALKING WAKE roared with an annoyed screech, digging its claws into the ground to prevent it from being sent skyward. Long claw marks scarred the earth as it tanked the hyper beam, smoke sizzling from its body when the charge ended.

The dragon decided to attack next with another FLAMETHROWER, trying to permeate defenses even though the REGICE couldn't melt.

The Hyper Beam was strong. It was a common move that the Legendary Giants often employed. Regirock and Regice had both employed it, and unbeknownst to Howard and Rocket intelligence, Registeel had employed an identical strategy against the Pokémon Rangers in Fortree.

This blast did not reach such a caliber. It was an imitation of a strike that could atomize a mountain. It was a spark compared to the sun, a mustering of what little energy remained inside the frozen machine.

Still, it wounded. That was sufficient.

"Hm." Howard raised an eyebrow as he looked towards Regice, which beeped weakly. Through its Clear Body, faint red lines of Dynergy swirled and worked as the golem attempted to recharge. It hadn't done that when Howard had first received it, but there was less and less energy each time he fielded it.

This had been a mistake. He should not have used it.

He had to end this soon.

Fire surrounded the Regice, which continued its eerie screech that caused Howard to twitch in pain, irritated by the noise. After a moment of recharge, another Hyper Beam followed.

[attr="class","diana"]Its screeching continued. WALKING WAKE was doing considerable damage from the sound of it, and Diana noticed that it was taking longer and longer moments to recharge its HYPER BEAM in retaliation.

So, instead of utilizing fire once more, Diana decided to command her beast to attack in a different style.

"BREAKING SWIPE. Catch him during his charge," she ordered, looking past the REGICE and toward howard slayte.

What exactly was the admin thinking? He was quiet, but she knew his mind was churning. Briefly, she thought back to the chasm and Area Zero, where he'd mentioned REGICE not having been to full potential.

Was that to case now? Still?

Thudding shook the ground as the Walking Wake lunged forward, intent on felling its foe with a harsh Breaking Swipe. Regice did not react. It simply went about its attack with cool indifference, rerouting power as needed to fulfill the requirements to fire a Hyper Beam.

Yet the Paradox Pokémon was too slow. Mechanical muscles beat flesh every time.

A flash emerged as a Hyper Beam erupted from the golem's face, intent on searing the flesh from the Walking Wake's bones. It was a practice match, true, but the golem hardly discriminated. In the facets of the Tera Crystals, a million worlds flashed by.

There was a world where the Walking Wake was turned to ash. In another, it doesn't Terastalize at all. In another, a Dynamaxed Regice crushes it like paste. In another, the Walking Wake cracks it open and tears for a beating heart to feast upon, only to find naught.

In this world, the Hyper Beam sparks and dies before it can eject, and Regice leans forward, limp and low on power. Diana's Walking Wake sends it tumbling backwards. Like a great statue, it falls with a crash.

Then, it does not rise.

"Dammit. Again?" Howard ran over to the golem and checked it. He nudged it with his foot, and it did not move. "Fight's over. You won."

The admin didn't seem happy. Not that he had lost, but for some other reason.

[attr="class","diana"]She wasn't sure what she was expecting, as the WALKING WAKE charged and attacked the icy body. Not a single bit of the frozen water melted, not a bit evaporated. It stayed in pristine crystalline structure.

However, as it charged its final HYPER BEAM, it shut down.

One last kick to where its chest would be, and the REGICE fell over. Her Pokemon roared with gratification, knowing that it had bested the beast of legend before it, and moved to attack once more.

"Yield," she commanded.

And like a pitiful POOCHYENA, it grumbled and came back to its master's side. She retracted it back into its luxury ball, regarding Howard and REGICE with a stare before speaking.

"Did you know this would happen?"

After a moment, Howard's gaze flicked to Diana. His expression was all the confirmation she needed.

"Yeah. Earlier than I expected." Howard checked his watch and frowned. "Six days. A new record."

The golem disappeared in a red flash as it retreated into its Pokeball. Howard tossed it up in the air thoughtfully, the ice glimmering in multiple facets as he did so. A pale imitation of the Tera Crystals that shined around them, entry points into other worlds.

"I'm reminded, perhaps all too frequently, that Regice is a machine." Howard nodded to her. "You fought well."

He was silent for a spell.

"Are you satisfied with how this ended?"

She should have known better. Perhaps the admin was right: she was too ambitious for something that was dangerous and unnatural. She wondered if he had the thought that she was weak and pathetic.

So, Diana responded in the way she knew best: "I am."

Lie. She found that she was getting used to lying day by day. To Rocket, to the League, to Remiel Calcifet... and herself.
