Instead, he dives behind cover and tries to not get caught in the black bile. A long string of red connects with Hattori. It’s rare for Navy to recall him like this, but it beats seeing him in pain while there’s other options.[break][break]
“But I’ve seen plenty of people get special powers. All of ‘em think they’re invincible, or that nothin’ll happen to ‘em. Don’t let it get to your head. Don’t get cocky, kid. Rocket’s gonna try and kill you. You’re making yourself a target.” It’s a lesson he himself had to learn when he first donned a sygna suit and marched off to war.[break][break]
“Roland, you’re up.” He sends out Roland, armed with a fresh-forged blade. Twirling it in his hand, he looks up at the monolith calling itself Tsubaki. Aiming his blade up, a moonblast shoots from its tip, cutting up into the sky to attack her.[break][break]

Baki calls back in anger, but she realizes the argument's a distraction. She quickly focuses on the new arrival. The knight raises its blade and moonlight gleams off of its blade. Tsubaki's seen him fight dozens of times, in this life and the last, and she reels back in preparation.[break][break]

Like a laser guided through a prism, her body shifts into a dozen different colors as the beam slams into her. She can feel her other self, her other body, reeling. But she maintains an even head, trying to tune out the sliver of doubt that Navy had tried to plant in her mind.[break][break]

Rely on it too much, and it'll be your undoing...[break][break]

But this feels right. In a way her own body has never been hers, has always been too weak. She unleashes a beam of light right back at the knight, refracting its own moonlight back at it as she swoops down and tries to gouge it with her claws. [break][break]

"If they come to Dewford, I'll just fight 'em!"[break][break]

And I'll win, too, she thinks. She was weak before. In Galar, and in Saffron. But now, she's strong enough to defend herself - and save the town. [break][break]

“And you’ve got to.” He says. “Win or lose, it’s our job to protect the folk who call this town home.” Roland raises his blade. If he feels any fear at the sight of the monolithic abyss called the heart mother, he does not betray it to his own liege lord or his foe. Instead, his blade shines in the reflected moonlight.[break][break]
“But they’re gonna study you. They’re gonna know your tricks. They’ll come at you with everything they have. Not just ‘cause you’re strong, but ‘cause you’re my heart.” And a body without a heart ceases to live. He knows this pain well between Gabe and Melody, and Rocket knows that pain is within him.[break][break]
Roland too knows that pain. He has fought giants before. He fought them beneath the earth in the caress of a slumbering god. As the beam comes down upon him, he hears the sound of a ball whirring through the air. Navy’s aim is perfect. Roland peers into a thousand worlds, innumerable as the stars in the sky. He gazes into things long dead and things not yet born. Miracles, impossibilities, and the cancerous growth of terastallized crystals coalesce into a supermassive crown atop the warrior’s head. Upon his head is a turtle, revolving around these many worlds. Roland is a galaxy unto himself.[break][break]
He rises, and he strikes. His aim is perfect. He sees a world where his aim leads him astray and ignores them in favor of those where his blade strikes true. A ghost haunts him as well, a fallen brother, and he channels that brother’s strength through his blade. The psycho cut streaks across the moonlight as he soars, right up to the belly of the beast.

Her failures are more than just her own now. Resentment surges in her heart, and black venom fills her veins anew. [break][break]

"They'll keep coming, then, like they always have! That doesn't change a thing, just the motivation!"[break][break]

This double-life had given her a reprieve since she had joined Navy, but it had always been that way. Since the day she'd entered Rocket, there had always been someone after her. Whether it was a League officer hunting her down for her crimes, or a Rocket admin rooting out rats, she'd always lived with a target on her back, ever since she'd turned twelve years old.[break][break]

"Better to stand for something! To fight, and make enemies, than live on the sidelines forever!" [break][break]

She'd almost forgotten what it meant to fight for more than her own survival. The very thought that she'd been forced to fight solely for herself for so long in order to survive hit her all at once. How selfish it was, even if that was the only possible way to survive that nest of vipers an ocean away... her heart beats, and blackness pours forth.[break][break]

Manju raises both of her primary tendrils as Roland wreathes himself in Stellar energy. Light shimmers from his blade, a thousand parallel worlds of dream and fantasy echoing forth, and Manju responds in kind. She glows an ethereal black, venom converted to a blade of light as she begins to sing, refracting his own possibilities back at him and severing them, one by one-- [break][break]

"Manju!!"[break][break]

The angel complies to the woman's call, and the blackened thorny halo that shimmers overhead threatens to swallow Roland whole, a black sea surging forth from all angles.[break][break]

There was naught but darkness in the beginning. Darkness was, is, order. The first spark of light was the first spark of rebellion, the first hint of the chaos to come as the universe sprang into glorious creation. Roland is wholly consumed by the supermassive wave of sludge. He is taken down into the abyss, every gear clogged, every motor straining. Her terastallization makes her mighty, but there’s one flaw.[break][break]
Stellar light. So long as a spark remains, the light wins. Victory for darkness is a zero sum game. Victory for the light is survival. Roland’s sword glows in the dark, a streak of rainbow light that explodes from him in a prismatic blast of energy and color. His tera blast strikes at Manju, fierce enough to kill. This blade has slain many angels, but it stops just short of the beast’s heart and the girl sitting in its core.[break][break]
The battle is over. Roland stops, waiting for the words he knows will come.[break][break]
“And that’s pretty damn valorous of you, Baki.” He presses a switch and all the lights turn on and once, bathing the whole arena in a glow. This place will be hers soon, her battlefield to paint as she sees fit.[break][break]
“Good job. The badge is yours.”

Then, the light. It tears away at the encroaching void, and two primal forces threaten to clash - the darkness that always was, and the creation of a star whirring away within the robot's chest--[break][break]

Tsubaki opens her mouth to utter a cry, but it is drowned out by the chaos. And then there is silence. [break][break]

Navy's words fill the eerie silence that comes in the wake of the surrender. [break][break]

"... Just carryin' your torch."[break][break]

“You’re doin’ just fine.” Nods the father. “And you’ll keep doin’ fine.” Roland, disappointed by the anticlimax of it all, hovers in his liege lord’s shadow. With the battle down, his tera crown fades. Pixelated eyes follow Navy’s finger as he points towards a corner of the gym, leading Tsubaki along.[break][break]
There sits a wall of polished granite, a quiet little corner of a larger arena. Into this wall is inscribed advice by the victors. Win or lose, every challenger is afforded the right to view this wall, but only the victors can mark the granite with their wisdom. Many of those who lose simply storm out in shame, the notion of taking advice forgotten.[break][break]
“This here’s one of my favorite things about my gym. I hope you keep this here when you take over. Per tradition, you can carve whatever you want into this wall. After you’re done, we’ll head back up top.”
