Though he loved Pokémon racing most of all, Josh appreciated motorsports, too. They were the easiest way for someone to go truly fast if they wanted. Not for Josh, especially after the Emergent's generous gift. He looked forward to the day he could saddle up Swift in public and zip across Hoenn faster than the fastest bike Kalos had ever seen. "My dad loves watching the stock car races. He'll even watch Formula Zero from time to time."

Impressed that Jethro could quickly tame such an aggressive species, particularly one whose fire breath could inflict burns painful as a Beedrill's venom, Josh entertained his question. "As big as that Rapidash over there," he pointed to the swift, blazing horse Pokémon he had a lot of experience with.

Jethro barked a sharp, incredulous laugh. He hardly noticed the Snorlax YAWNing at his side as the ex-Ranger stowed away his new Houndoom and turned to watch the nearby Rapidash, [break][break]

“Yer shittin' me,” he insisted, eyeing the cream-colored coat of the horse nibbling at a sparse bit of foliage. The thing was probably at least fifteen hands tall, he reckoned; there was no chance in hell a Houndoom would get within spitting distance of that kind of height. [break][break]

But concerns over height quickly disappeared when he watched the Rapidash begin to sway uneasily on it's feet. It was with some frustration that Jethro realized that Buffy's unintentional attack must have made the thing drowsy. The ex-Ranger tossed a Pokeball at the Rapidash with an agitated grumble under his breath. It was another mouth to feed, but at least now the Pokemon wouldn't fall over and break it's leg up here on the isolated mountain.

Josh idly watched Jethro capture the sleepy Rapidash, happy to see the burning equine go to such a worthy home. They were some of the most useful Pokémon farmers could have, being able to cross their vast properties swiftly or have a load-bearing Pokémon if need be. Hauling supplies around such a large place was not easy, as Josh had found out from the enormous size of his Racing Grounds!

"I'm not, Jethro," Josh laughed at the older man's skepticism. "Do you know what Space-Time Distortions are?" he asked, withdrawing Resheph as he sent out another of his Pokémon. Much like Resheph, the orange, Rapidash-sized fox wore riding gear. He swung his leg over the Thievul's back, the vulpine anxious to get going. "Milo here came from one. Really large Pokémon have become a lot more common in Hoenn after these Distortions started showing up."

“Heard somethin' about 'em, 'fore I first moved to these parts. Bet they probably keep you folks at the League awful busy.” [break][break]

He arched an eyebrow in surprise as he got to witness one of the strange products of the phenomena firsthand. He shuddered to think of what a Thievul of that size could do to a coop of Farfetch'd or Ducklett, [break][break]

“Well ain't that somethin',” he murmured with some awe as he regarded the oversized fox. He took a couple of steps closer, frowning a little to himself as the gears started turning. There were all kinds of things that could go sideways when it came to your average Pokemon's health; who knew what kind of issues a creature of this size might run into? [break][break]

“You gotten him checked out? Made sure he's healthy, an' all that?”

Milo's eyes shifted toward the crater, sensitive to a faint vibration on the other side of the rim. "He's fine; I actually hunt for Pokémon that come from them. If you ever want to see more, drop my Mauville Gym. It's where I let all my Pokémon roam. If you're a talented rider, you'll have a lot of fun out there, I guarantee it." He could go on about some of his more unusual specimens, but spoilers! It was more exciting to discover just what crazy Pokémon roamed the Champion's domain. Perhaps he'd even meet a legendary Pokémon there.

Josh was almost a Distortion hunter; besides gathering dimensional data for illeana reyes , finding Pokémon normally far too small to saddle, but could due to the immense size, was a treat. His most recent find from one was a Mandibuzz, more than large enough and strong enough to ferry Josh through the skies. "Supposedly they're remnants of links to another region in recent history. A history where modern amenities are lacking, but Poké Ball technology still exists. I've got a wooden Poké Ball somewhere," he mused before a whirring sound followed by a loud and pained neigh caught his attention.

Squeezing Milo's sides, Josh rode his Thievul up to the edge of the rim, witnessing a wild Rhydon brutalizing a Rapidash with his horn spinning fast enough to create a small whirlwind around his head. The Ranger hurled Resheph's Poké Ball toward the rock-type, the aquatic serpent whipping her AQUA TAIL at the armored attacker. With the Rhydon reeling, Josh aimed the toss of an empty Poké Ball toward the bleeding Rapidash behind its barbaric attacker. His aim was just unsteady enough to unintentionally bonk the Rhydon instead. By the time he could ready a second Poké Ball, it was too late. The fire horse had lost too much blood, and wouldn't last long enough to get to a Pokémon Center.

Josh withdrew Resheph with a heavy head. "I'm sorry... there was another Rapidash down there, but I couldn't get to it in time..." he moped to Jethro.

The young Gym Leader's persistent enthusiasm would have been grating were it not so genuine. Jethro just huffed in reply to the invitation, though all told, it might prove to be a valuable resource if his new Rapidash was going to earn it's keep. He probably would've said something to that effect if it weren't for the the new sounds of distress coming from nearby. [break][break]

He followed behind as Josh rode up, only to grimace as he watched an apex predator decimate it's prey. Jethro knew it was too late to intervene even before Josh had secured the assailant; he had seen enough of the violence that Pokemon could inflict upon each other to know when a critter was too far gone, and quite frankly, the dying Rapidash was on it's way out. [break][break]

So he just pulled the brim of his hat down low as Josh moped, and scowled at the loss of life below them, [break][break]

“It's the way a'things,” he replied with a staunch bitterness, “Kill or be killed.” [break][break]

His bright eyes dimmed a little, crestfallen with a remembered bit of grief, [break][break]

“'Least Pokemon do it fer sensible reasons, like feedin' themselves. Humans are the only animals savage enough to do that sorta thing for sport.” [break][break]

Which is why he'd chosen to work for their benefit in that lifetime ago in Unova. Perhaps this was simply indicative of his misanthropic nature, but Pokemon could make for far better friends and coworkers than many people could.

"...You're not wrong," Josh replied in a somber tone as he retrieved the Rhydon's Poké Ball. From the sise of the wound that horn had inflicted, the rock-type had to be a giant. Giant enough that the Gym Leader could use it as a burrowing steed, thanks to the crest on its head keeping debris from flying into his face. Better keep Shalin Nariya away from it, though. "Rapidash are rare in the wild now, thanks to poachers. Because they're so easy to break to the bridle, poachers target them frequently."

Josh stared over the edge of the caldera. Once, Mount Chimney's crater was exposed, covered in bubbling magma whose presence caused its surroundings to waver like a mirage. Since the eruption, the entire crater had been buried, transforming its bubbling center into a giant steam vent that the brave could traverse over. "Kyle..." he moaned, thinking about what he presumed was a sacrifice the Emergent made to save the lives of countless others the awful day MATIAS SILPH 's Patron went Primal...

Discussions of the horrors of poaching could wait, because in that moment, the ex-Ranger was immediately preoccupied by his recognition of the loss that so plainly weighed down the other man. Jethro watched Josh watch the caldera, and his own bitterness evolved into something more sympathetic. He slipped his hat off, an old habit he'd never quite shaken, and moved to stand near the younger man's side, [break][break]

“You're hurtin'.” [break][break]

Jethro didn't look at Josh as he spoke, instead mirroring the Gym Leader and sweeping his gaze over the buried crater, [break][break]

“You wanna talk about it, son?” [break][break]

Jethro wouldn't blame the kid if he didn't. It was easier to keep that sort of thing buried deep, but grief would eat you alive if you let it. The fact that the ex-Ranger was even here right now was a testament to that.

Though Josh at first didn't want to bring it up, he also felt the need to vent. If he kept his frustrations to himself, they would only boil over, and he would inadvertently explode upon Jethro. The farmer seemed friendly enough; he wanted to at the very least be considerate.

"Hoenn's Top Champion, kyle lopez , lost his life in the eruption recently," he pointed toward the colossal pile of smoldering ash. "The one that created the caldera below. Used to be a volcanic crater where all kinds of rare fire Pokémon lived. Now, those kinds of fire Pokémon are a lot harder to come by. But Kyle... he was one of my best friends. He did something...truly special for me about a week before he died. Almost like he knew when he was going to die. I wish I could tell you what he did for me... but I can't right now." The key phrase being right now.

"That's why they've got the Pokémon League shut down. Melody Miro 's going to be his successor when they reopen. I've been helping search for his body for a while, but to no avail. That's part of why I'm here."

Jethro nodded in acknowledgment, listening patiently to the younger man's grief. The loss of a well-loved figure would have been terrible enough even without the personal connection, but the untimely departure of a friend would certainly hurt all the more, [break][break]

“I'm sorry for yer loss,” he replied, though he frowned inwardly at his own words. [break][break]

In the throes of his own grief, all those pitiful condolences ever managed to do was piss him off. Most of the time, they were only ever spoken by folks who'd never known of that yawning heartache that came with the loss of a loved one, by people who could never fathom that particular sort of bottomless despair. [break][break]

Jethro grimaced, but was struck by some new stubborn bit of resolve. Talk was cheap; actions spoke a hell of a lot louder, [break][break]

“You want help lookin'?” [break][break]

He wasn't entirely unfamiliar with search and rescue operations, having assisted with a couple such ventures back during his Ranger-ing days. Jethro wasn't sure if there was much of anything left to find, but he'd be damned if he didn't do something to try and help.
