those close to him have been allowed visit during his stay at the hospital. the likes of Michael Navidson have had to wait, their request pushed out until he returns home to his ranch, and it's there that he finally agrees to their visit.

there is no animosity in the way he regards his fellow elite four; not anymore, at least; time has helped fade those resentments, though he knows not to assume the same for them.

though he plays it off with humor, hearing those words spoken into existence means everything to him. his head dips down to hide his smile as he reaches down to pick up a chew toy. the markings that run along his arm look darker than before, almost burnt and eroded.

"i don't blame them, we all have to eventually, but it seems you and i are falling behind."

the chew toy makes a deflating squish as arcanine chomps down on it.

briefly, his mind wanders back to what he remembers of galar; what little of it, anyway, as the rest have been clouded over and will continue to. he remembers they had a child together but their name remains lost to time.

"that was the beauty of kyle. he's a simple man, humble and otherwise boring, but through his journey he became so much more."

kyle lopez may have been hoenn's champion but he was also matias' friend. to lose that, selfishly, is a far more painful loss than for the region to lose its champion who has already been replaced.

his gaze travels past navy to land on nothing in particular. the trees, maybe, as they seem more green than they have in a while.

"we met at the hoenn star tournament."

he chuckles, reminiscing.

"his mightyena steamrolled my snorlax. basically made a mockery out of it. i remember being both upset and amazed at how easy he made it seem."

with all these different paths now open to him once again, what will he do now? which path will he choose to take? he's spent weeks thinking about it, to try and make sense and to plot out what he needs to do and where he needs to go, but in the end, he decides to take things one step at a time.
