Thirty days. It'd come, and gone, as quickly as any other.

A pillar of the League had fallen here while the another had been near comatose yet the days pushed ever onward.

Something like that made a man feel small; a blip, no more important than he'd been before joining the League. This feeling perfused and festered until he had no choice but to see the changes for himself.

The image of a ruined volcano sparks the embers of anger in his chest. He'd always told Matias he could change so many lives with his abilities.

How right he'd been.

Movement, barely defined in his peripherals, catches his attention. It's a flicker, vague and blurry, but the Fairy-type on his wrist recognizes a threat when she sees one.

A FLOWER SHIELD fills the space between Greyson and this new foe, reinforced as much as the time allotted, even as Greyson reaches for a Pokéball at his waist.

Zev had no reason to doubt the recordings made by the Unown. If declan walsh believed their veracity, that was enough for the rest of Team Rocket's leadership. But Zev could not dismiss the nagging feeling that something was amiss, even as news reports reached his ears that kyle lopez's body had not been found. [break][break]

So he made the trek to Mt. Chimney himself, clad in dark, nondescript clothing. He anticipated that the volcano would be crawling with League officials and volunteers, so he stuck to the shadows as he ascended to the peak. [break][break]

What Zev found there was not the charred remains of Hoenn's Top Champion. Instead, he found a man—one whose face was known and admired by the region's people, and whose name was high on Team Rocket's list of League personnel to kill. [break][break]

Greyson Connors. [break][break]

Dark crystals spread across Zev's skin, covering him from head to toe. Cold blue eyes shone amidst the black void of his silhouette, focused intently on the Elite Four. As he started toward Greyson, Zev opened a Pokéball of his own. [break][break]

The FLOWER SHIELD shimmered into existence just in time, as the assassin's Shadow Nidoking charged at Greyson with MEGAHORN.

Shadow was the antithesis to the natural order of things, so when the FLOWER SHIELD shatters beneath the attack, Greyson isn't surprised.

"Unf," he grunts, knees and elbows scraping the rocky terrain as he dives further out of the way, ending in basterdized roll.

Wisps of condensed shadow energy leave inky scars marring cloth and flesh alike, but he pushes that out of his mind as he quickly jumps to his feet.

A singular Pokeball expands between shaking fingers and the silhouette of an Iron Valiant, already swinging a PSYCHO CUT infused blade at the Nidoking, shimmers into existence.

Before Greyson could track the outcome of that attack, Zev Harcourt is upon him, jagged crystallized armor shining beneath a midday sun, an arbiter of death if Greyson had ever seen one.

And he had. Necrozma. Why would that terrible memory resurface now?

From beneath a thin coat his SYGNA SUIT glows a pale pink and green. Soothing energy flows through him like the euphoria that accompanies the smell of a rose.

Through gritted teeth he outstretches one hand and releases a SPRINGTIDE STORM at point-blank, muscles tensing for what he believes is an inevitable collision.

Nidoking bellowed from the agony of the PSYCHO CUT. Turning from Greyson, the Shadow Pokémon squared off against his new foe. A SHADOW BOLT arced between them, aiming to strike the Iron Valiant. [break][break]

Zev kept the clash between Pokémon in his periphery as he bore down upon the Elite Four. The crystals along his right arm extended into a straight blade, razor-edged and black as night. Despite the brightness of the midday sun, it did not shine; instead, it was a thick line of void cut into space itself, absorbing all light. [break][break]

The blade swung at Greyson, but a sudden SPRINGTIDE STORM pushed Zev back, slowing his momentum. Crystal bit into the rocky ground instead, gouging the stone. The maneuver bought the other man enough time to back away and scramble to his feet, if he so chose. [break][break]

Eyeing the glowing Sygna Suit, Zev yanked his blade free. The metal shards reshaped themselves, morphing into a gauntlet ringed with spikes. [break][break]

"You should know better than to go anywhere alone, Connors," the monster said as he advanced again. His voice was cold and apathetic, almost aloof. "The League can't afford to lose another one of their elite soldiers."

Pushing himself to his feet, straining against the ache in his joints, Greyson stares down the slowly approaching man.

"Goddamn Avatars everywhere I turn." He grumbles. Finding himself in a fight with jayden cross, MATIAS SILPH, bryan delarosa and now Zev Harcourt all within' a year? He was truly unlucky.

"Yeah, yeah. I've heard it all before. Maybe we can skip the back-and-forth this time and just to what you came here for?"

Out of the corner of his eye Greyson spots his hand shaking ever-so subtly. He clenches it. The soothing sensation his SYGNA SUIT offers him works to slowly unwind bundled nerves.

To his left Iron Valiant raises her blade to split the SHADOW BOLT down the center. It's effective in cutting the power in-half but two less powerful bolts score hits on either shoulder pauldron. In retaliation she rushes the Shadow Pokémon, lance held in both hands just above her hip, rabid stabbing motions as she enters CLOSE COMBAT.

The other man's obsidian gauntlets presented too great of a risk; he couldn't just start throwing punches lest he was prepared to leave with a battered and bruised body. Gritting his teeth, Greyson reaches for another Pokéball.

A blade and shield manifest, one in either of Greyson's white-knuckled grips. It'd been a while since he'd used battled like this, but, it was the best option he had.

"Let's see if you bleed red too."

Not talking was perfectly fine with Zev. Banter was a waste of precious breath. He raised his fists and fell into a fighting stance as Greyson summoned an Aegislash and brandished it as a shield and sword. [break][break]

As if having a Pokémon in his hands would even the odds. [break][break]

"I don't bleed." [break][break]

Zev launched his attack, fists swinging with a precision and force built up over two decades of training. Though clothing tore easily from the swipes and slashes of the Aegislash, alien metal prevented any injury. [break][break]

Greyson might even see chips, dents, and scratches forming along his Pokémon's body the longer they traded blows. [break][break]

Nearby, the Shadow Nidoking engaged with the Iron Valiant in a parallel display, suffering the blows of CLOSE COMBAT and retaliating with IRON TAIL.

Pecking order still in contention, Greyson abandons al pretense of civility.

As Zev goes on the offensive, Greyson instead chooses the opposite — what he lacked in talent or experience Greyson made up in for it with simple street smarts.

Strike batter his shield and each impact reverberates to the bone of his forearm as it tries to reinforce the effort. Sparks fly as expected, but most surprising is the grunts and small whines of pain from the Aegislash. This was a Steel-type, revered for its defensive capabilities. Yet this stranger was damaging it with each strike.

This was even more dangerous than he'd expected.

Embracing the connection in his Sygna Suit, Greyson wills a GRASS KNOT to rise from the rich ashen soil, while his other hand calls forth a SOLAR BLADE infused strike at the man's extremely rigid armor. If he couldn't cut through it, perhaps he could cook what was inside?

On the other side of the field an IRON TAIL catches the Iron Valiant in the left most pauldron, compounding the damage taken by the previous bolt. She stumbles, weight shifting automatically. Like the kick of an old engine her QUARK DRIVE FLARES TO LIFE and beneath her feet an ELECTRIC TERRAIN suffuses the earth.

GRASS KNOT caught Zev unaware, so focused was he on a counter from the Aegislash. He tripped and fell at Greyson's feet, looking up in time to see the gleaming sword bear down upon him. Light from the SOLAR BLADE flashed along the brilliant steel. [break][break]

The sword, swung with all of Greyson's might, collided with Zev's carapace and cracked along its entire length. In the same moment, Zev siphoned the sunlight into himself. Power flared inside him, and he grabbed hold of the Aegislash's blade with a clawed hand. [break][break]

zev can absorb infinity energy from targets to weaken them and strengthen himself for a temporary period of time.

Without letting go of the Pokémon, Zev rose to his feet, drawing on its Infinity Energy through their contact. He kept his gaze fixed upon Greyson's, even as electricity crackled across the ground and charged the air around them. [break][break]

Zev paid the phenomenon no mind, for he could get rid of it at any time. [break][break]

Nidoking backed off from the Iron Valiant, keen eyes watching his foe closely, waiting to see what it would do. His bruised and battered body rose and fell with every heavy breath.

Black, clawed hands wrap around the steel of Aegislash's blade, snuffing the light from the attack. But not just the light. Greyson feels the blade turning heavier by the second as her will is tested against the strength sap.

"What the fu—" He cuts himself off before he could finish. Words wasted would only bring him one step closer to dying.

"KING'S SHIELD! She responds to his call, a sphere of cobalt blue erecting itself around her and Greyson. The absolute defense.

Hopefully.

Taking the breather as a chance to tip the scales in their favor, Iron Valiant thrusts her blade into earth just in-front of her. It sinks until it's halfway down the shaft, the other end SNEAKING THROUGH ZEV'S SHADOW to impale him from behind, searching for any signs of weakness, or visible flesh.

The blue aura of KING'S SHIELD forced Zev to release the Aegislash. No matter. The Infinity Energy he had sapped from it had been enough. His body overflowed with the fuel he needed keep fighting no matter what Greyson threw his way. [break][break]

Nidoking braced for impact against the SHADOW SNEAK, but no blade jutted out of the ground in front of him. Instead, it slammed into Zev from behind. So unexpected was the attack that the man lurched forward from the force of the blow. [break][break]

The Iron Valiant found no point of weakness, however. No exposed flesh. Only unyielding crystal that threatened the integrity of everything that collided with it. [break][break]

And so Zev recovered his balance without cause for concern. Keeping Greyson in the periphery of his vision, he pinned the Paradox Pokémon with his unforgiving gaze. [break][break]

"Enough of this," he said, raising a hand. [break][break]

Gravity warped. Greyson would not feel it, but his Iron Valiant would: the sudden force that pulled it downward, demanding its obeisance to the laws of the universe. [break][break]

If nothing happened to intervene, the Pokémon would become nothing but pulverized atoms and space dust in a matter of moments.

A breather is all the Avatar, set slightly off balance from Iron Valiant's lance, offers him.

It's not nearly enough time.

Iron Valiant for her efforts is consumed in localized gravity manipulation. Her metal bends and tears, joints creaking from the strain, and the Paradox Pokémon is pushed to one knee.

Even if he could distract Zev long enough for the ability to cut off, Zero would be a sitting duck for the Shadow Pokémon. Seeing no other choice, he goes for the last ditch effort.

D Y N A M A X.

Iron Valiant is consumed entirely by violet light. From deep within' the silhouette of the knight grows to preposterous size, linking to the POWER SPOT nearby.

Standing tall she leaves footprint shaped impressions into the stone and dirt. Her lance, a skyscraper by all regards now, thrums and vibrates as before, though now it rumbles loud enough to be mistaken for Mt. Chimney's eruption.

With a HELPING HAND from Greyson, she sweeps a vertical NIGHT SLASH at Zev that, for a moment, blackens the very world around them much the same way Matias had during the Dark Sun transformation.

The air thrummed with a sudden and violent power, interrupting Zev's concentration. He released his control over gravity, his attention now wholly captured by the sudden intrusion of sinister energy. [break][break]

Dynergy. He recognized the taste of it at once, a tainted memory that nevertheless filled him with ravenous yearning. [break][break]

The crystals covering Zev rippled in unison, reinforcing his body, transforming him into a vessel to contain Eternatus' life force. Starlight swirled in his eyes as he gazed skyward. The towering Iron Valiant swung its great lance, and he rooted himself, bracing for the inevitable impact of the NIGHT SLASH. [break][break]

Nothing could dodge such a massive blow. [break][break]

All around him, stone shattered and exploded outward. Nidoking fell, unconscious, bleeding shadow upon the barren ground. Zev recalled his Pokémon with the flick of a wrist, unfazed by the sight of such grievous injuries. [break][break]

But he did not choose another Pokéball. For an instant, it seemed the man was insane enough to face down a Dynamaxed Pokémon all by himself. Then the air high above the battlefield spasmed. Through the wormhole that opened stepped a familiar sight, all brutal angles and obsidian planes. [break][break]

The same violet light that had consumed Greyson's Iron Valiant engulfed the Necrozma shard. It grew enormous, achieving a size similar to the real Necrozma that lurked in Ultra Space. Zev felt the echo of the transformation reverberate through his body. [break][break]

Without warning, searing white light illuminated the peak of Mt. Chimney as a PHOTON GEYSER erupted around the Iron Valiant.

Greyson dives to the floor even as the earth is ripped apart from his Iron Valiant's strike. When the dust settles and the earth stops violently churning, he's shocked to see the armored man not only alive but standing upright.

What kind of monster was this?

His answer comes in the accompanying tear in reality above the devastation. The very presence of the wormhole sends a primal shiver down his spine.

This was Death itself.

"It can't be." He whispers with widened eyes.

Aegislash, still in his hands, falls to his sides. His grip felt weak and shaky. The mews of concern and fear from around his wrist fall on deaf ears — everything does.

Memories superimpose themselves over the Black Knight.

The day in Sootopolis. The carnage and destruction; the death of his Pokémon; the helplessness of it all.

Then.. There's another. The skeletal framework of a creature. A burst of cobalt light as a dog strikes out with a behemoth sized blade. The satisfaction of knowing it was.. over?

What was over?

Reality comes crashing all too late as Greyson whips around to face the Paradox Pokemon.

"WIDE GU-!"

The world explodes.

Consumed by the PHOTON GEYSER, Iron Valiant roars in pain. It rattles the earth for miles and threatens to burst his ear drums but, even through the blinding light, he can see the silhouette of the Pokémon burning.

Of her dying.

"Ellie!" Greyson's cry is desperate as he raises his wrist to eye-level. "Help." A plea. A plea that knew the cost would be great.

But the Comfey didn't mind that.

In a burst of blue and white that resonates with the ring around his neck, she pushes her HOSPITALITY to its limits. The bubble expands further, and further, until it covers the Paradox Pokémon in its entirety.

It lasts only a few moments, but in that short time, ALL DAMAGE INSTEAD HEALS the Iron Valiant.

From deep within' the geyser, cracking the shield as she does so, Iron Valiant strikes out with a PSYCHO CUT that crackles with the electricity from her QUARK DRIVE.

Beneath them all, Greyson steels himself. He wraps his fingers around the hilt of the blade until they're white-knuckled; it was the only way he could stop them from shaking. With the other, he returns the Comfey to her orb.

He flicks his wrist as the world shifts, a POWER TRICK shackling the two in its laws.

Out of moves, he charges the Avatar of Necrozma.

His SYGNA SUIT EXPUNGED, Comfey unconscious, and against a seemingly unstoppable opponent, Greyson prepares himself to die.

A psychic blade swathed in electricity cut through the massive pillar of Necrozma's light to land a PSYCHO CUT on its prism-like body. The shard roared in frustration, causing the very air to shake. It raised a claw, summoning the surrounding darkness for a SHADOW CLAW, unaware of the blessing granted by the Comfey's Z-Move. [break][break]

As the two titans fought for dominance, Zev turned his attention back to Greyson. Just in time, too. Steel flashed like fire in the midday sun as the Elite Four raced for the Rocket Beast in a headlong charge. [break][break]

If Greyson wanted to die, then so be it. [break][break]

The Aegislash swung for Zev. Crystalline tendrils burst from his shoulder to catch the blade and force it aside. In the same fluid movement, Zev stepped into Greyson's reach. One hand seized the other man in a cruel grip, while the other raked at flesh, aiming to disembowel. [break][break]

But at that moment, Mt. Chimney shuddered. One of the Dynamaxed Pokémon had slammed into the ground. The two men were thrown into the air and forced apart; the killing blow Zev intended did not cut deeply enough. [break][break]

Still, when he recovered and saw the blood pooling from Greyson's midsection, he knew the Elite Four was not getting up. [break][break]

Let's go, Zev willed. His shard pivoted away from the Iron Valiant and scooped him up in a massive claw. As he rose high into the air, he watched Greyson's body become smaller and smaller. He can bleed out and join Kyle in oblivion. [break][break]

The Necrozma shard peeled away from the peak, seeing that its attacks were only healing its enemy. As it shrank in size, Zev finally opened another Pokéball. Shadows spilled out, coalescing into his Gengar, who whisked the three of them away with PHANTOM FORCE.

He has a moment to register the tendril of crystal that catches his blade before a pain unlike anything he's ever felt shocks every muscle in his body.

When he's throw off his feet his grip on the sword and shield falter too. Pokéballs spill from his belt and lay scattered on the floor. He reaches for them as his vision begins to slowly fade.

She's going to be mad.

His hands wrap around one of the orbs and clicks the center button. A figure appears in-front of him, but by the time it's fully realized, Greyson slips into unconsciousness.

Delphox emerges from her stasis with far less concern than one might've expected from a Pokémon watching her master bleed out. She regards her trainer and, with a flick of a wand she retrieves from her fur, creates a tightly packed mesh-webbing over the injury.

She turns her attention than to the oversized Iron Valiant, now reducing slowly in size once Greyson wasn't conscious enough to maintain it, then to the dimly lit Pokéball that houses his Comfey.

She growls in frustration.

In the deepest parts of her mind she can feel the space where Zev and his Pokémon disappeared from. It was like a rip in reality concealed by shadow. Delphox pays it no mind.

Lifting the Iron Valiant on PSYCHIC energy, she groups Greyson, his belongings, and his two leftover Pokémon in a circle. That left only one decision: the location.

After a moment she curls her maw into a fox smile and engages the TELEPORT.

In seconds the only trace of their battle that remained was a ruined landscape and pool of blood.
