Bruin the Salamence touched down in the center of the first League base he'd spotted from the air. Gunner slid off the dragon's back, then immediately reached up to help PENELOPE LIVY down. He grasped her firmly, trying to ground her in the strength of his arms. [break][break]

Her Charizard landed beside them moments later. [break][break]

"Someone get a medic!" Gunner yelled at the startled personnel scattered around the camp. Two individuals surged into motion, rushing toward a tent with the familiar medic's symbol printed along the side. [break][break]

The agent adjusted his hold on Penelope, encouraging her to wrap her arm around his shoulders while he folded his own arm around her waist. "Hold on, Miss Livy. We're safe now. Someone's going to take a look at you to make sure you're okay." [break][break]

He started making his way to the tent, supporting her the whole way.

It burned her to be this way.

Helpless, like a babe clinging onto their mother. Unable to walk without support, unable to SEE without guidance. It was an existence from hell. One so demeaning, it felt as though her own pride was being attacked left and right, with swift jabs from her enemies, each one an individual slice of mockery.

"How fucking dare she," she snarled, voice locked behind the curtain of hair pooling in front of her face, hanging down with her limply moving head. While she kept to every other requirement of movement - arm strapped around his shoulder, legs following the tremors from his footsteps - Penelope's head continued to be a detriment to all operations, rolling around her shoulders, as though magnetized to the ground. "She'll pay - her friend, too. And anyone else that follows that crap of hers."

Though Penelope was not fighting Gunner, she was at the edge of losing her composure entirely. He managed to duck them under the flap of the medical tent and guide her to a chair. As soon as he disentangled himself from her, nurses stepped in to assess the councilwoman. [break][break]

"I know her," Gunner confessed, feeling ashamed for the friendliness he felt toward Nomi at the carnival last summer. "She studies at Slateport University under the name Naomi Sato. My brother is one of her professors, so that's how I met her." [break][break]

Did GIDEON GRAVES know about his student's association with the other pink-haired woman (parker jones), the one who'd beaten him bloody? [break][break]

"I can compile a profile of her as soon as we get back to Ever Grande City," he offered.

Fangs already bared and drooling for fresh blood, Gunner Graves's confession nearly sent her into a frenzy. Had it not been for the medical workers already swarming the councilwoman like gnats, there would no hampering the flurry of depravities teetering off the edge of her tongue.

Penelope's questions were standard fare, sensible in the context of the situation. But the way she snarled and gnashed her teeth caused Gunner's brow to knit together in consternation. She reminded him of a rabid Pokémon infected with disease. [break][break]

Shaking his head to clear the thought from his mind, he replied, "I met her last year when I was stopping by Gideon's office at the university. It was a brief meeting, since she was just leaving." [break][break]

The agent tried to recall if his brother ever mentioned the girl in conversation afterward, but nothing came to mind. [break][break]

"He doesn't talk much about his students with me, just about his own studies. I doubt he knows anything, since he didn't know about Elisabeth Fiorelli, either." Gunner had to break that news to Gideon himself.

Gunner's frown deepened as he hesitated. No, he could not be certain, not unless he spoke with Gideon about the matter directly. But he knew his brother. Gideon was the kind of man who got so caught up in his work that he ignored warning signs even when they were waving in his face. [break][break]

It was what had happened with his divorce. [break][break]

"I can speak with my brother and confirm whether he was unaware of Sato's allegiance," Gunner offered. "He's on a research trip right now so I can arrange to meet him when he's back." [break][break]

Which meant, unfortunately, that Gideon was unreachable for at least another week.

If she had the ability, this would've been the moment to search Gunner. To ensure no lick of suspicion rest behind his eyes. But, for now, all she had was the memory of his loyalty. Hazy at its corners, certainty drawing it's center, the conjured image only solidified her resolve on the matter.

"Of course, ma'am. I'll get on that right away," Gunner said without hesitation. Compiling a dossier for Naomi Sato and filling out the request for a search warrant caused less of an emotional tumult within him than the thought of interrogating Gideon. [break][break]

He stood to the side while field doctors and nurses fussed over Penelope. From beyond the barrier of their bodies, he observed the councilwoman. She was still highly agitated, but sure that was because of their near-death encounter. He couldn't blame her for lashing out. [break][break]

Gunner caught the arm of a passing nurse. "Will she be okay?" he asked in a low voice. [break][break]

"Her injuries are minor, but her eyesight—we're not sure if it's a permanent loss or not, yet. She needs to rest, and if her vision isn't back in twenty-four hours, she needs to set up an appointment with an ophthalmologist." [break][break]

Nodding in grim acceptance, the agent released the nurse.

Without any hesitation, he relayed the explanation the nurse gave him, including the recommendation to see an eye specialist if the councilwoman's sight did not return within a day. [break][break]

Nails digging into the soft of her palms, instincts coaxing them to find blood, for a moment, Penelope was encased in amber, lost to time.

The words choked her. The implication of permanence wasn't a phrase she wasn't ready to acknowledge. It wasn't even a possibility she wanted to ever consider, knowing far well what'd it would mean, and what she would have to temporarily give up in the process.

"No,"she dismissed the thought with a searing hiss, "take me to the office with you. Waiting on what we've gathered will only grant them more time."

Through shaky legs and a withered expression, the councilwoman forced herself to rise. Her hands strangled the armrests all the way up, and even when her body straightened up to its fullest height, she would find purchase on its elevated backrest.

"I want to go through every file we have, starting with Gideon's. She's being supported by someone on the inside - I know it. And when I find them, or whoever else remotely involved with her..."

Her eyes darkened, her words growled.
