Greyson is received with a smile. Navy mans the bar, happy to see his appointed opponent arrive on time. With Melody Miro’s promotion and MATIAS SILPH’s house arrest, the two of them have been shouldering greater and greater burdens.[break][break]
“Thanks, Connors. Good to see ya” He says amicably, pulling down a bottle of the Elite’s own mead. Two glasses are filled with honey liquid. “Have a drink with me. Zero and Shuwen can go at it when we’re ready.”[break][break]
Afterwards, he wastes no time. These are hard times, and he needs the drink.[break][break]
“Surprised you haven’t swung by sooner, man. What’s Goode got you doing these days?” His smile frays at the edge, trying to make jovial conversation like a lifelong friend didn’t pass beyond the veil just last month.

Greyson complies, moving from his resting position, eyes still wandering on the furnished old wood.

He pulls a stool out, throwing his legs over until one set of toes hooks beneath the footrest. He eyes the mead with narrowing eyes, but accepts the offer.

With the flick of another wrist he sends the Iron Valiant out. Her scarlet armor glimmers beneath the light.

"Not much, the usual." He didn't want to admit his own mental weakness had led to him stagnating on multiple fronts. Even now, this challenge, it consumed time he would need to catch up on other avenues; nevertheless, it was a step forwarded he needed to accomplish.

"Going through the gauntlet just took a lower priority to everything else. But, I figure, I got some time now, so why not?"

“Mmm.” Greyson’s the usual is received with a barman’s amicable nod. There’s much and more left unsaid when a man says that, and Navy chooses not to pry. Instead, he simply sips on his own mead and looks to the Iron Valiant.[break][break]
“That’s a pretty paint job, Connors.” It makes him wish he’d committed to bringing his own Iron Valiant, but he would not deprive Shuwen of his fight. Something tells him Rocket will come to rue this scarlet swordswoman.[break][break]
“Part of me wonders why Goode keeps champion challenges running. We’re at war. Seems…too normal, having Elite Four matches. With everything that’s…” He stops himself. To speak of Kyle is to spoil the mood – his own, if not Greyson’s.[break][break]
“Anyway. We’re living through one of the most important wars in history. What do you think a champ’s supposed to be in times like these?” Greyson’s already passed his interview, but the sheriff can’t resist the question. It is, after all, the question when you walk the warrior’s road.

"You need a sense of normalcy." He says, filling in the gap where Navy leaves off.

As much as some people didn't want to admit—Kyle was the third person in recent history to take that position. He'd held it the longest, but the mortality rate arguably one of the highest.

"That question seems more philosophical than a simple listing of requirements." He taps the counter with two fingers, considering. "Someone strong. A wall. Unbreakable." He pauses before adding a last piece. "They also need morals."

He nudges his head to the field. He wasn't.. the talk-about-his-feelings type. Not typically.

"Ready when you are."

On the field of battle is where he spoke the loudest—something he figured Navidson would understand well.

Nodding to the other man, hand leaving the handle of his drink, Greyson stands and fixates on the battle.

"Zero start us off." Slamming the butt of her staff against the chamber floor, her QUARK DRIVE thrums to life, an ELECTRIC TERRAIN spreading like a spiderweb beneath both Pokémon.

Taking stock of her opponent Zero's processor makes the necessary changes to her engine—her opponent would likely be focused on strength so she would need speed. In a flash of scarlet she surges forward with a horizontal PSYCHO CUT.

Greyson lets a small smile settle on his lips.

"This will be fun."

In the oncoming rush of electricity, Shuwen feels his fur stand up on end. His warrior’s instincts detect one intrinsic truth, communicated to him at the speed of nerves flying between eye and hand. [break][break]

His favored sparring partner among Navy’s fighters is an Iron Valiant. Many of them, fresh born from the rift, are drunk upon their own power and easily dispatched. Zero, Shuwen realizes as she closes in, is Roland’s equal.[break][break]
The difference between life and death, things that look so easy before a relaxed crowd, is a matter of inches. His body pivots to the side, just long enough for Shuwen to thrust his fist out, a hefty blow meant to gain him distance in their close combat.[break][break]
“Ora!” Shuwen shouts, a war cry resounding from his soul.[break][break]
Only now does his trainer speak.[break][break]
“Damn right it’s gonna be.” He makes no secret of his own smile, the sort ancient marauders wore when they terrorized distant Galarian shores.

Urshifu's fist meets the long shield of Zero's WIDE GUARD. The Iron Valiant's digital violet hues peek out from over the lip and they hold no discernable emotion.

She hadn't been given a chance to fight a creature like this before—she would relish the opportunity.

Using the tower shield as a buffer, Zero brings the haft of the spear back and executes a series of quick jabs, embracing CLOSE COMBAT as easily as her opponent.

A short “Tch” escapes Shuwen’s lips at the raised tower shield. His moment will come. He waits, a patient hunter, as the spear jabs out towards him. In his peripheral, the bear sees Navy. The human with whom he has pledged to defend this region is reckless. Some would say too reckless. Facing the oncoming spear, Shuwen understands recklessness has its place.[break][break]
The spear digs into him, the jabs grazing along his fur. Blood stains the mat below them both, red as Zero’s paint. Counting his lucky stars that none of the blows find solid meat, Shuwen’s fists fly in retaliation. Channeling the spirit of water within him, he shouts his war cry. Water gathers along the edge of his fists, the torrential surging strikes sparking from errant electricity spread across the field.[break][break]
“It smell like bacon in here to you?” Navy asks Greyson as Shuwen’s fists sizzle.

Flesh parts easily, and with it, Zero's eyes narrow. She wasn't foolish enough to believe her strikes had found purchase through skill or luck, but still, she was too slow to stop the initial barrage.

The shield can only block so much, and with a robotic silence, she takes multiple strikes across her metallic armor.

Metal bends, and in some places, cracks, but the vital circuitry that keeps her operational remains, for now, untouched.

Reaching for a thread of electricity, Zero weaves it like a thread around the Mythical Pokémon, sparks dancing across fur as it seeks to DISABLE the SURGING STRIKES.

Taking a moment to herself, she heaves the shield up once more, steadying herself for round 2.

"That smells like bacon to you?" It almost made him want to gag.

As his trainer speaks the words, Shuwen’s fists lock up mid swing. Water that once surged around his fists splats on the ring below. His black eyes flick to the floor and then back up to Zero. He still has his legs. Stepping closer, his leg sweeps low, leaving his torso exposed. Close combat, Navy finds, is often a reckless thing.

He downs the drink while he watches.

The entire point of having a glaive was to keep the enemy beyond arms length. Succumbing to another CLOSE COMBAT, Iron Valiant grunts in agitation. Lifting her WIDE-GUARD to cover her entire body, she stabs downwards with the tip of her vibrating lance.

Coughing more blood, he gathers z-energy around himself. A crystal tucked into Navy’s hat, right alongside a rainbow feather, begins to hum and vibrate.[break][break]
This next exchange of blows will decide everything. Navy downs the rest of his mead, leaning forward and smiling.[break][break]
“Looks like Shuwen’s ‘bout to put everything on the line.” Looking to Greyson, the sheriff has the excitement of a sports fan in the final inning.[break][break]

The first strike shatters the WIDE-GUARD.

The second crumples her breastplate.

The third sends her flying back into the far wall, crashing with such a force that dust and debris fill the air in droves.

Silence settles like a heavy blanket and, tense, Greyson stands with narrowed eyes. Something flickers in his peripheral and his attention shifts to the Mythical's shadow, a smile curving his lips.

A lance rests at the Urshifu's throat, amethyst blade vibrating, color blinking in and out. The weapon itself is broken in half, but the Pokemon holding it in even worse shape—metal hangs limply with electrical cables sparking behind, an entire arm warped and bent at her side, and one eye dimmed.

But she was standing—partially obscured by the SHADOW SNEAK—and, despite appearances, the weapon was still as a placid lake.

"What do you think? Should we call it?"
