Practicing sword drills was one thing, but it didn’t really help keep his skills sharp. No, what he really needed was a training partner. Someone who would actually hit back instead of a dummy that only took his hits.

After deciding he needed a partner to spar against, he decided to put up and add, requesting a training partner who could help him keep his sword skills from getting rusty.

With people's work schedules, he was expecting a long wait on getting a response, so he was surprised when he got one not too long after he put up the request. It was a further surprise to see who had answered his request: the gym leader of his current hometown, or would it be his home city?

Either way, he hadn’t been expecting to get a response from such a well-known person.

After a short discussion, it was decided that they would meet up at the Mauville gym and that Josh would be training up his mounted combat skills. Mounted combat was a good skill to obtain, and he decided it wouldn’t hurt if he trained himself in that regard as well. Decision made, he agreed to the terms of mounted combat before getting geared up and making his way to Mauville gym.[break] Josh Devlin

Josh's skills with the blade were rusty. Having learned from Finnegan Yang , he put them to use in Dewford's clash over RESURFACED TREASURES. With the region gearing for war yet again. If he was going to ride his Pokémon into combat, he may as well learn and practice maueuvers that made it effective.

Perhaps with a little modification, he could electrify the blade and truly be a Knight of Thunder. Even so, he didn't expect to use it often. He had determined that the front lines were simply not for him. He did have the Great One's blessing, meaning the League would closely monitor him and his Sacred Ash Raikou.

He would not be practicing with the Beast, though; that would have to be done at the Pokémon League, at HQ's onsite training grounds. The public could not know about Raikou. From the perspective of the masses, all traces of the electric tiger vanished with kyle lopez 's death.

Shortly after Gym staff paged Josh from his third floor office, he came out of the elevator, dressed in a Manectric-themed SYGNA SUIT. "Good morning, Mikael," he greeted the young man. "You weren't on my appointment list, but that's okay. What can I help you with?" Mikael was fortunate that business at the Gym was very slow.

It didn’t take long for Josh to arrive, and Mikael was just about to greet him when he started speaking. As he began speaking of appointments, he had to resist looking at his phone. Did he have the day wrong? Hadn’t they talked about training up on their mounted combat?

“Ah, I thought we had scheduled a sparring session. I apologize if I got the day wrong; sometimes I get so absorbed in my work that I mix up days,” he admitted, trying to remember if this was the right day or not. It was completely possible he had gotten the day wrong.

He really needed to be better at keeping up with his days. However, there wasn’t much to be done about it now if he did have the day wrong. No worrying about paying attention to the passing days was a problem for another day.

"Anyway, if you have the time for a sparring session, today is one of the days I have off of work.”

When Mikael mentioned an appointment, Josh eyes twitched. "I'll check the appointment list one more time, but I don't think I saw your name on it." He thumbed across his phone for around a minute, poring over his signup sheet a couple times before shrugging.

"Nope, I didn't see you on the list. Maybe it didn't go through. You are in luck, though: I've got an opening, but it's not a big one. It's less than an hour. If you think we can fit a match in, let's head outside!"

With that, Josh would slide open the sliding door to the Racing Grounds proper. Whistling for two of his Pyroar, Nala and Rani, he would sit atop one of the tall lionesses once they had arrived with substantial haste. He gestured toward the other for Mikael to hop onto. "It's a bit of a trip to the Main Sector, where the battle courts are. Rani's a good girl; she won't mind! Hop right on!"

That was weird; he could’ve sworn he had made an appointment. Looking through his own phone, he looked through the call log. To be bad about looking through his call log, he had calls listed dating back to when he got the phone a few years ago. Making a mental note to clean up his call log, he continued to look through his phone. Coming to wear, he had called the gym. He was a bit perplexed when he saw he had called practically back to back.

“I called, but maybe I forgot to make an appointment when I did. I hadn’t been sleeping well when I had called to make the appointment,” he admitted with a small shrug. Not that he was sleeping any better from the last time he had called, but he wasn’t overwhelmed with stuff like he had been when he had made the call, so his forgetting wasn’t completely out of the realm of possibility, just that he was used to struggling with sleep, so it was highly unlikely.

He was doing it again, though. Immediately taking the blame with no thought whatsoever. It was probably a habit from when his brothers had been around since he had often fallen back on taking the blame for their mistakes so they wouldn’t get in trouble.

As the older male spoke, he nodded. “That’s fine with me,” he told the younger male. That worked perfectly. It would keep himself from working too hard. Apparently he tended to push himself when it came to training; that’s what people said anyway. He didn’t see it.

Following the older male outside, he would immediately look around. It was definitely more spacious than he thought it would be. If he had more time on his side, he would probably inquire about how much money it had taken to a space for all of his Pokémon to roam free.

Thoughts about perhaps trying to see about getting a space for his own Pokémon were interrupted when Josh called forth two Pyroar. From the looks of them, they were both female. Not having to be told twice he would swing himself onto the back of Rani than wait for Josh to take the lead.[break] Josh Devlin

Those kinds of mishaps were part of being human. Humans made mistakes. Miscommunication happened. "No biggie - I'm glad the time slot worked for both of us," Josh reassured his sparring partner, impressed he could seat himself on Rani's back. She was not one of the Gym Leader's smaller felines.

Mikael's thoughts were not unwarranted; Mauville Racing Grounds had a colossal budget. Initially, it was funded almost entirely by wealthy Mauville taxpayers; with the region having a solid tax code, the rich paid their fair share and made public services among the best the world had to offer. Though some may have criticized the Gym as being paved with pork, it was among the region's most-visited attractions. Where else in the world could one saddle up almost any appropriate Pokémon species in the world?

"Alright, let's go!" Josh pointed, the two lionesses slowly accelerating to keep Mikael comfortable. The sensation just lasted for a long time, the Gym Leader not being subtle about his love for high speed. Were Mikael to grab Rani's reins, he would find himself to have limited control over the Pyroar, as long as he rode in Josh's general direction. Though their backs flexed quite a bit, the saddles they wore were engineered to minimize stress the Pokémon put on the rider.

At the speed the fire-types clocked, they would get to the main battle courts with little delay. The practice weapon Josh wielded was coated in a soft foam to prevent it from doing any real damage, and protective gear further made them safe against the dangers of a joust. Even so, the blunt force of a charge was something to be wary of, no matter how soft their play-blades were!
