Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki is full of sayings like that, especially ones about flowers and snakes. They happen to be his adopted daughter’s favorite things. Coughing, he tries to move on from the point. Even if her eyes betray far greater concerns, he thinks it best not to goad this creature of survival with anything approaching bait.[break][break]
“…anyway. I can take that deal.” His eyes follow her, looking where she looks. It’s the tower, the one he can never bring himself to approach. This dream will end, just like his dream of Galar ended. A notion that they will not stay in this prison for much longer grows stronger every night, spurred by instinct.[break][break]
“But we’ll be out of here soon, and we both know things are going to get serious soon.” And as tragic as Kyle’s death is, as much as it hurts him, the thought of what comes next stabs him deep. “People are going to die, Ms. Fiorelli. Something strikes him about her words, haunts him, reminds him of another life. Parts of what she says remind him of another life, lived long ago, when he had the good sense to stay out of this war. He, too, thought like that. He would have kept thinking like that, if fate hadn’t placed him at precisely the right moment, in the correct place.[break][break]
“Then don’t die for them.” His words echo those said on the island, a plea for her to stay alive. Whatever else comes, he hopes she lives, the same hope he has for everyone. It’s a naïve dream, that this war can end without anyone dying. He’s far too old, too battered and beaten, to believe in fairy tales, yet he speaks in vicious defiance of the way the world has to be.[break][break]
