In another life, Michael Navidson would call this a gray area job. It’s certainly expected that he check out this intel. It’s proper. All the same, with League resources at the top stretched thin between kyle lopez’s death and MATIAS SILPH’s leave, no one is seriously going to give him shit if he turns this down. They’ll shake their heads, say it couldn’t be helped, tell him to redouble his efforts on ready League troopers for the upcoming offensive – an offensive which seems to be starting any day now according to the rumor mill.[break][break]
Yet still, he’s suited up. Navy stands alone, just off the shore of this small island. Someone from Rocket’s command staff is overseeing something here. Perhaps it’s smuggling. Perhaps they’re gathering intel on Ever Grande. All he knows is that someone has to get them out of here, even if the island is closer to Sootopolis than it is to Ever Grande.[break][break]
Could be more than one. A younger man’s voice whispers in his mind. Could be it’s a honey pot. Could be Harcourt, Delarosa, and Quinn are all sipping on martinis waiting for your stupid ass to show up. Melody’s gonna have to bury you if you keep showing up swinging your dick everywhere.[break][break]
An older man quiets the thoughts. It’s a warrior’s duty to fight, and the Pale Rider’s writ to venture forth alone where fellowships fear to tread.[break][break]
His Scizor’s bullet punch slams into one of the grunts, a blow aimed at the leg. It sends him flying, fast enough to break his back were it not for Hattori catching the man with a substitute. His shinobi has been given very specific orders: they don’t kill.[break][break]
“Well well well,” Navy grins upon seeing who among the command staff is there, “Tempest Quinn. Your hubby’s gonna have to add an Ever Grande jailbreak to his resume, I’m bringin’ you in.” His smile is cracked at the edge, threads coming undone, but it holds for now. Whatever poisons seep through his body will not kill him yet.

Comms crackle in his ear. The gunpowder and lead they'd been smuggling was almost unloaded and ready to cart off to Sootopolis. It's more frustration that bites into Tempest when he hears the violence. A dark knight roused by duty, he pushes roughly past a poor Grunt from the cavern mouth.[break][break]

'Fuck' is mouthed under his breath when he sees him.[break][break]

A sneer is all Tempest answers Navy with. It's followed by the motion of him clicking his comms, a stern and clear "Evac." growled into the mic. The lines closes again. Tempest glances over at Hattori with one of his and narrows his eyes. Two Dive balls are plucked from his hip, a pair of shiny pokemon unleashed on the thin water and sand of the inlet.[break][break]

The Milotic coils around Tempest protectively, eyes not leaving Hattori. Her hypnotizing Attract trying to work on the small frog. The Lapras twitches and sings in place, a heavy boulder between the two men; the Rain Dance already making the weather turn sour.

Brown eyes flick back to Navy, some frustration melting away as Tempest cocks his head to the side. Brows furrowing lightly, he purses his lips and shakes his head.[break][break]

"Why the fuck are you out here, Navy? You look like shit."

“’Cause my friend is dead.” Is his answer, given in a voice full of raw grief. Poisoned chains wrap around his heart, whispering that this is the warrior’s road, that through violence he might find some relief from the pain of Kyle’s passing.[break][break]
“Rocket killed him.” Yet Tempest Quinn had nothing to do with that death. He was nowhere close to Mt. Pyre. Perhaps he was having a nice stroll with his husband, oblivious to the death until Elisabeth Fiorelli returned and the celebratory champagne was popped. [break][break]
All he knows is that he wants to fight, even if he has to wobble forward. Musashi floats forward, unleashing another bullet punch aimed towards the Lapras. It’s a bad matchup. Musashi spots it a mile away. There’s a reason Navy picked Musashi. Unlike most of his dragons, who simply rage, his Scizor makes a conscious decision to fight, even if it’s a bad idea.[break][break]
He’s the perfect enabler. Hattori sits off to the side, making no effort to attack either Temp or his Pokemon. Instead, the frog stares up with one big, red eye at Temp, as if pleading in the silent language of soul to not hurt a man in a state this sorry.

The Bullet Punch slams into the Lapras with considerable force. There isn't much she can do to prevent it; she is a creature meant for the sea, her large and heavy body doing little on the packed sand. A bruise starts to form where she was hit, making it whimper in pain briefly.[break][break]

She hasn't fallen yet, though, and raises her voice high to sing out a Perish Song. It is as eerie as it beautiful, a crescendo of doom that sits on all of their shoulders.[break][break]

Tempest waves Tiamat off. The serpent seems far less interested in the battle taking place before her and in Navy himself, sliding over to coil around and close (but still not touch) the frog pokemon. She cocks her head to the side, unblinking eyes peering at Hattori.[break][break]

Tempest glances over at the frog, catching it's eye, and something sours in his stomach.[break][break]

"Lopez was a good man. He deserved to die like a hero." Tempest wasn't there. He doesn't know the hard details of what happened to kyle lopez. His words probably do little to comfort the living, breathing man in front of him.[break][break]

"You know this won't bring him back."

“He didn’t deserve to die at all.” His voice carries a dragon’s growl. At his hip sits a black dragon’s pokeball. Vortigern waits within. Watching, waiting. The dragon waits eagerly to see if Navy will call it out. Hattori, who should be comforted by the company of a beautiful sea serpent, can instead only fixate upon that pokeball. He has no desire to see the dragon come out - not here, when they stand to lose so much. [break][break]
“Your Underboss…she killed a good man.” His voice quivers, feet marching forward. He marches like everything will be alright if he can just land a blow on this fated foe. His moves grow sluggish. The chain he has fought so hard poisons him even now, and he doesn’t realize it. [break][break]
Musashi grunts in triumph, oblivious to the song of the sea sung by Lapras. All he understands is that he has achieved some measure of victory. Emboldened, his wings begin flapping in a mad rhythm. They carry on them a silver wind that promises destruction and doom for all present. [break][break]
“What the hell am I supposed to do?” He asks, half begging as he throws a slow punch.

But he did. And we will, too.. Flicks through his mind, catches on his teeth. Something is wrong with Navy, even Tempest can see that. While antagonistic towards the man, it seemed wrong to mock the other in such a way. To let that errant thought push the other towards some precipice that Tempest couldn't see for himself.[break][break]

"I don't know her that well. She's not the one I usually answer to." Himself and Elisabeth Fiorelli had only met a handful of times, brief and in passing. Usually Tempest worked under jayden cross, but occasionally THEO BECKETT or Cillian Quinn had special use of him. His words do confirm he knows, at least vaguely, what the sheriff is talking about.[break][break]

The Lapras fades out, slowly losing consciousness, but she stares at Musashi with anger in her pale eyes as she goes. A final cry so the other pokemon is Blocked. Like the scorpion that carried the frog, it will take the steel type with it. There is no escape for creatures like them.[break][break]

Tempest glances over at his pokemon with something like pity, but leaves her there, asleep, for the moment.[break][break]

A punch is thrown; Tempest does not shift to avoid it, only so that it can glance off his shoulder. Even slow and feeble, Tempest knew not to look down on Navy's abilities. A quick hand reaches out to snatch the other man's wrist, though, to squeeze it tight enough for the leather of his gloves to creak.[break][break]

"Live."[break][break]

A command. Tempest narrows his eyes at the other, glances down at him from the bit of height he has advantage. It could almost be romantic, if there were other people. But Tempest only sees the shell of his rival here and it is pathetic and disquieting.[break][break]

His grip tightens.[break][break]

"I'm not fighting you like this, Navidson. Go home."[break][break]

Navy's death would only be satisfactory if he was at his full power when Tempest slaughtered him.

And, in a kinder world, that would be a fine ending. The errant hero would see the wisdom in the villain’s words. He would retreat. In time, they would do battle and good would do what good always does in stories: triumph over all.[break][break]
Theirs is no kind world. Instead, at this precise moment, the burdens upon his soul finally catch up with him. Caught by Temp’s hand, he is held in place. Navy’s lips move to form words. Instead, a massive glob of viscous red blood is spat across the beast’s chest, followed by a collapse. There is no care for how he falls, given how his wrist twists and snaps on the way down.[break][break]
Something inside him is broken. Nothing Temp has yet done would cause this much internal bleeding. Light leaves Navy’s eyes. As Musashi collapses in a mirror of his trainer, Hattori sprints forward like a creature possessed. Skipping across the ground, he all but flies to his Lord’s side. The frog desperately tries to revive his Lord, feeling for a pulse, whining and mad in the way only who truly loves another can be.[break][break]
And, in the end, he looks up at Temp. Language and all its nuances are not a gift afforded to Pokemon. All he can do is look up in silent plea, begging him to not let Navy die like this, lest the sheriff meet his friend in shame on the other side.

Navy collapses.[break][break]

Tempest, instead of doing the wise thing and letting go, holds tighter. This keeps the other man's body in a sort of half laying, half dragged way until Hattori rushes over. Only then does Tempest have enough wherewithal to let go, allowing the man to fully drop.[break][break]

"Uh!"[break][break]

It is at once that Tempest is reminded, and Hattori would see, that he is just a man.[break][break]

When Navy and Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki and other such enemies are around, he puts on a good show of being some bad-ass criminal. About fifteen stages of panic and grief and hysteria cross his face before he finally collapses down next to the frog, his shred of humanity thrust back into the light. Gloves are peeled from sweaty hands, revealing the burn scars from PENELOPE LIVY's attack months ago now. He tries to straighten the other out to the best of his ability and checks for a pulse. Anything.[break][break]

Tempest Quinn wanted Navy to die. Tempest wanted Navy to die but not like this. Temp wanted to be the one to do it. He wanted Navy to look up at him, both of them bloodied and tired and drunk of adrenaline, while he choked the last light from his eyes. He wanted to be the last thing Navy saw. He wanted Navy to die knowing he lost.[break][break]

"You!" Tempest points at Hattori, then quickly puts his hands over Navy's chest. Fists together, palms down, Navy flat on his back. Hovering over the other, he starts to give him CPR. "I have four balls on my belt. One if for a Zarude, one is for a Dhelmise, and the other two are Shadows. Get the Zarude and Dhelmise. Don't let the Shadows out by accident. They'll try and kill you."[break][break]

Tempest honestly didn't know how much the Greninja would understand, but he hoped it was well enough.

Hattori, unlike his Lord, has no enemies. When Temp makes the attempt to save Navy’s life, the frog listens and complies. Spoken language is a gift granted to humanity from the creator. They use it to tell stories, weave myths, defy their natures. Navy sees Temp as some mighty foe, which he by all rights is, but that is but one side of a complicated being.[break][break]
Reaching for the pokeballs, he studies them, as if he will find some grand insight on what is inside. Choosing one at random, he releases…[break][break]

Tempest plugs Navy's nose and pries his mouth open. Two long, deep breaths are pushed into the other man's throat. Later, if Navy lived, it would be for the best he did not ask why his lips tasted of honey flavored chapstick.[break][break]

The Zarude raises a lip at Hattori when released, looming over both humans and the small frog alike. The Dhelmise only floats in place idly, wide eye watching intent.[break][break]

"Bongo, Jungle Healing. Cutlass, prep a Phantom Force." The Zarude grunted before doing as he was told, a huge wash of healing energies erupting in the immediate area. It wouldn't be enough to heal Navy to full, but it might be enough to keep him from dying till he could get some real help.[break][break]

Tempest hefted Navy up and over his shoulders into a fireman carry. He grunted with the effort, muscles straining, but Tempest was a strong man. If he could yank around Cillian Quinn on the regular, surely he could be able to carry the E4 member.[break][break]

Tempest cursed to himself and grabbed onto the Dhelmise, jerking his head for Hattori to join him. The Phantom Force was already starting to take hold, a dark portal of shadow solidifying underneath the pokemon.

Anything could happen as the phantom force takes hold. Someone will find out. His Lord will be in danger…[break][break]
But better he be in danger than dead. A shinobi is one who safeguards warriors of light through darkness. A plan begins to form, one that will bring howard slayte into a conspiracy to keep him safe. That, he thinks, will work. So Hattori consigns himself to this path. A slippery hand grabs his own pokeball, pocketing it for now. Best that he not allow himself to be recalled.[break][break]
“Ja.” Hattori says, praying that everything will be alright.
