it had been roughly a week since their return from megalopolis. her sour mood about having been sucked into a portal by illeana reyes ’s palkia had only been slightly lifted by word of her own promotion.[break][break]

she was ready to celebrate some. to share a meal and drinks among family, and be at peace, however short-lasting it would be – with any luck. war loomed. the sooner they planned to strike, the better.[break][break]

she knocked on the door of their sootopolis home, and then stepped back to get a better look at its face. it was up in the air, whether her brothers would own it for much longer, but their plight in an alien prison had reminded her of rocket’s collective strength. the gods that were on their side. the monsters. all the same.[break][break]

regardless of outcome, she’d get a taste of the blood she was craving, and surely, all who faltered in their judgment would be reminded of who their enemies were.[break][break]

Cillian hasn't been sleeping well. He startles awake at every sound, jumps at every touch. In night terrors, he imagines the LOYAL THREE dragging him back to their prison.[break][break]

Tempest Quinn does what he can. It's not enough.[break][break]

So when Cillian pulls open the door, it's with tired eyes and a weary smile that he greets his little sister and steps aside to permit her entry. The energy of the home is tense in contrast to its bright, well-decorated interiors. The smell of Temp's cooking wafts throughout.[break][break]

Their parents had not raised them to be physically affectionate, but Cillian hugs her if she allows it. In part to certify that she was real, that this wasn't another dream from which he'd wake chained and choking back tears.[break][break]

"It's good to see you."[break][break]

The dining room saw little use; Cillian preferred to sit at the kitchen island and stare out over the Bay. Tonight the dinner table is set in a manner to rival Sienna's parties. But rather than the grand rectangular table of Quinn Court, from the head of which their had grandfather presided like a king over his uncomfortable subjects, the round table allowed them to sit as equals.[break][break]

It had not been a conscious choice.[break][break]

"What are you drinking tonight?"[break][break]

His liquor cabinet is ever-stocked. The question is posed to both of them, a smile cast in Temp's direction when he enters the room bearing the gift of food.

With a hum, Tempest bustles out of the kitchen. The table is mostly set; their nice plates and bowls filled with bright vegetables in various crisp sauces, steamy white rice, and some citrus and octopus poke as side dishes. A blue and white pan is sat down, the lid lifted so a waft of steam and the smell of the fish can encircle them all. He's wearing an apron, one of those cheesy ones that says 'Kiss the Cook', a blue oven mitt holding onto the glass lid he had just just removed.[break][break]

"Hi, Lulu!" Tempest grins brightly, waving to his sister-in-law, before quickly bustling back to the kitchen. He's only gone a moment before he's back, free of his cooking outfit. He approaches Lulu Flint and also offers her a hug; if she accepts, it is quick but crushing.[break][break]

"I made leek wrapped salmon, so I think a white wine would be good." Is offered to Cillian Quinn. He places a hand on the man's lower back, glancing at him with clear affection, before he turns to their guest again.[break][break]

"Thanks for coming over! I hope that Hoyeon food is alright with you; Cil made me promise to not cook you a fish head." Temp sighs, playful, as if Cillian was being silly in the request.

her brother looked like shit. she’d hardly been faring any better on sleep – not that it was the fault of the loyal three, but the terror did linger, a haunting in the back of her mind.[break][break]

cillian’s unexpected hug was met with rigidness that only softened some after a moment. ”you too.” she squeezed back the lightest bit before stepping away, and smiling at temp in his apron. ”hello!” she called after him as he hurried back into the kitchen.[break][break]

when asked for her drink preference, she considered. before, when they’d drank together, it had been scotch, but life had proven too fragile, too unpredictable recently not to drink what she really wanted...[break][break]

and then there was temp again, back with a hug too crushing to get out her answer in time, followed by a chef’s suggestion for a wine pairing she couldn’t simply turn down.[break][break]

”white wine it is, then,” she agreed.[break][break]

her eyes slid over to cillian at the mention of denying a fish head dinner. ”did he?” thank you, read the look in her eyes, before falling back to his husband. ”everything smells lovely. looks, too. thanks for having me.”[break][break]

how different it was from what she and her brother had once known in galar, and how different from the floor of an alien spaceship prison.[break][break]

Cillian's laugh brightens his grim countenance as he nods in confirmation to Lulu Flint's question. You're welcome the glint of amusement in his eyes responds.

"You're always welcome here." Always had been. But he's not trying to make it awkward by making them think about how little they hung out; it's merely a warm assertion of her place in his life. "I'll go get the wine."[break][break]

Lulu and Tempest Quinn are left briefly alone together as Cillian rummages through the liquor supply. The white wine was near the back, unopened, so he grabs the corkscrew from the drawer as well.

He returns to the table, pouring them each a glass before he finally sits down.
[break][break]
Once they're settled, he gives his sister a knowing look and a little smile. "So, anything new going on in your life?"

He already knows about the promotion. Of course he does. But they've not had an all-hands meeting among the brass, not yet, so he suspects Tempest Quinn may still be unaware.

"You should come over more often!" Tempest says, guiding Lulu Flint over to the table to sit. He makes himself comfortable in his own seat, waiting for Lulu to serve herself. An old Hoyeon habit; Tempest would serve himself last since he was Sachem-to-be. Lulu would get food first as she was the youngest and also the guest.[break][break]

"I need someone to gossip about Cil with." He continues, chuckling to himself; he says it like a secret between them, eyes sparkling with mischief.[break][break]

Tempest is not aware of the promotion. But he is aware of something else that Cillian Quinn might not be.[break][break]

"Has Shred stopped by to check on you?" Tempest didn't know about what happened between Lulu and Shred in the prison. He did know about Shred's crush, though. His tone is innocent, like just asking about a friend from another friend.

her eyes were grateful as she nodded to her brother, knowing she’d always be welcome. as angry as she sometimes felt at him, he would not turn his back on her.[break][break]

”maybe i should,” she answered temp with another smile. by the sight of her family, she was reminded of their power; of gods like shadow lugia, and beside them, the monster that was necrozma, and there was still hope for their city.[break][break]

after they were all seated and the wine was poured, she welled with pride at cillian’s hint. however, as she opened her mouth to make the announcement, she stopped short, caught entirely off guard by temp's question about Shred .[break][break]

“what? no. i mean, i checked on him i guess. he’s got that weird mark.” she stared at her brother-in-law, brow furrowed as she put together that it only made sense they knew one another, and wondering what conversations had gone on behind her back. “um.”[break][break]

there was another awkward pause, before she proceeded, ”actually, i’ve been promoted. i’m back in my old office.” her smile returned, and she sipped her wine.[break][break]

While Cillian had noticed that Shred and Lulu Flint had stuck together during their imprisonment, he'd thought little of it. They'd been cellmates, after all, and even Cillian had begrudgingly cooperated with a member of the League to ensure his own survival.[break][break]

Temp seems to imply a closer bond, though, and Cil's eyes shine with curiousity as he glances between the two.[break][break]

"It's not troubling him, I hope?" His attention fixes fully on his sister as Shred's mark is mentioned. "Last I spoke with him was at the funeral."[break][break]

They'd all been at Velmos' ceremony.[break][break]

The underboss brightens as he grins at Lulu's announcements. "Right where you should be!" He lifts his glass of wine to clink it against hers in a congratulatory gesture.

Should he tell Lulu Flint that he might have just flat out lied and said that the two of them were blood related...?[break][break]

The announcement comes and Tempest beams at his sister-in-law.[break][break]

"Lulu, that's wonderful! We'll be kicking all kinds of ass with you at the helm." Tempest gives her a toothy grin and lifts his own glass as well. Sharing a toast with two of his favorite people in the world.

“he says it burns him,” she told cillian, of shred’s mark, and idly realized again that fate seemed to persistently torture the beast – though perhaps that was not giving near enough credit to poor decisions.[break][break]

velmos’s funeral was a mess lulu hardly wanted to remember. the effort she’d gone through to appear mournful had seemed to benefit her none in the end, on top of being utterly ridiculous. “a silly thing that was.”[break][break]

at temp’s comment that shred thought highly of her, she played unaware. “hm. does he?” wine met her lips. she wished only to know less than she already did.[break][break]

about the promotion, she smiled, “thank you! it is good to be back.” but then she shifted, the joy fading coolly, a familiar twinkle of suspicion and spite in her eye. ”but, speaking of the death of velmos, in my return i’ve come to realize something troubling.”[break][break]

”Greyson Connors must die, yes? his actions are irredeemable.” she paused, head tilting as her eyes fell across the meal. the dead fish. the cutlery. ”so, why is it that Naomi Sato is seeking to ally with him?”[break][break]

Cillian imagined the burn of the mark was nothing compared to the grievous injuries the Beast had sustained from the redirected Hyper Beam that should've killed him.[break][break]

He frowns at Lulu's comment on the funeral.[break][break]

"A necessary thing, to maintain an alliance."[break][break]

Many of the Megalopolans had been terrified in the presence of Necrozma, and no wonder. They were lucky to keep what support they had from some of the remaining aliens.[break][break]

But he doesn't want to bicker with his sister. Not again.[break][break]

"Of course," he says immediately of Greyson Connors. They've already discussed it. His brow furrows, wondering where she might go with her next words. Eyes widen at mention of Nomi. "She what?"[break][break]

His knuckles whiten around a knife gripped too tight.

Tempest doesn't see Lulu Flint's innocent deception. The moment to mention Shred and anything about the man passes, though. They turn to less light topics. A forkful of fish is scooped into his mouth as he chews thoughtfully.[break][break]

"Greyson Connors had to die even before that." He was an enemy, high within the League. The blood he was spilled was basically guaranteed for his daring to cross Rocket.[break][break]

That is followed by a frown, though, when Lulu continues to speak.[break][break]

A hand slides over the table to gently cup over Cillian Quinn's; to try and get the knife out of his grip before he hurt himself by accident. These were nice ones, custom from Aurelie Lefevre's shop. No doubt they were sharp enough to split tendons before it was even felt.[break][break]

"Why would she do something like that?" There is pure confusion there, lines not clicking as they tried to cross. Greyson was an enemy, so of course Naomi Sato wouldn't try and commiserate. Of course, Lulu also had no reason to lie to them so Tempest instantly dismissed that line of thinking.

‘a necessary thing, to maintain an alliance.’ lulu had thought the same, until people like THEO BECKETT and jayden cross had gone and butchered it. she pursed her lips, only just refraining from arguing it, but she had another certain blue-haired fish to fry. and hell, Naomi Sato had been at the funeral too.[break][break]

her brother-in-law’s violent sentiment about Greyson Connors earned a tip of her wine in agreement. ”yes, temp. my thoughts exactly.” after a sip, she placed it down, and in the immediate wake of a dropped bombshell, proceeded to cut into her fish.[break][break]

cillian’s expression fell and she noted her brother’s grip on his dinner knife. a well-timed bite hid her smirk. the look in her eyes as she set her fork down then, smirk already faded, was not unlike the one she’d had when casting doubt about the unown’s previous avatar, at rocket’s round table.[break][break]

”mysterious, isn’t it?” she picked up her wine again, swirling it. ”they were imprisoned together. he was 'kind' to her. now, she thinks we need him, to fight the drk triad – our real enemies.”[break][break]

Tempest Quinn's lucky not to find the knife through his hand when he tries to touch Cillian without warning. Thankfully, as Cillian was in the sanctuary of their home, he feels safe enough not to flinch. Instead, he only shoots his husband a sour look that seems to suggest I'm fine before his attention shifts back to Lulu Flint. There is hatred burning in his eyes.[break][break]

He sets the knife down, mostly to put his husband at ease.[break][break]

"Fuck that," he says vehemently, when a suggestion of alliance is posed. "Plenty of other League idiots she could cozy up to, but no."[break][break]

Naomi Sato had chosen the one who'd tried to kill Lulu. How dare she?[break][break]

"She's fucking convinced she's above it all," he spits, derisive and cruel in his anger. He had trusted her JUDGEMENT, and clearly he'd been wrong to. "That she can just run around with the League because she's the Visionary. No." He gives a sharp shake of his head. "That's not how this works. If she chooses him over us, she goes down with him."
