Greyson shakes his head, sick of the narrative Matias spins with all the delicacy of an earthquake.

"I don't know if you truly believe that shit, man." His eyes lift, catching something moving out of their corners. He turns to face Matias, telling himself he'd look in a second.

"But nothing you've done has been good for the region—only yourself. And Arceus, not even then. At least here you're alone and can't cause any proble—"

The words die on his lips as finally, he turns to look at what had caught his eye.

the stairs creak as annalise comes down, peering over the bannister to try and catch a glimpse of matias downstairs. her hair is still wet from the shower, slowly dampening the slouching shoulders of a shirt too large for her frame. [break][break]she drifts into the kitchen first, then the living room, looking lost. it doesn't take much searching for her anxiety to return, tightening her throat like clenched fingers. he left her. he didn't even say anything. he's just gone —[break][break]she moves to the front door. the sound of his voice, just barely muffled beyond the wood, quells her anxiety and compels her to go out. [break][break]her gaze falls on matias first, then snaps toward the sound of a startlingly familiar voice. whatever she had thought to say dies in her throat, replaced by a beat of silent, wide-eyed staring as she processes the man in front of her. she is guilty, at least, of being here, condemned by the pallor that mantles her shocked expression. but the way she stands frozen in the doorway, dressed in matias' shirt, betrays a rapidly-snowballing revelation. [break][break]her fingers squeak against the wood of the doorframe, futilely trying to ball into a fist, and the sound is enough to break the spell. her chest rises with a sharp breath, then she turns and disappears back into the house.

a miscalculation brings them to where they are now, standing at opposing ends with words and emotions caught in their mouths that won't leave no matter how hard they try. the anxiety he felt before that had urged him to rush Greyson Connors away from the ranch doesn't return. in its place is something more twisted.

annalise henderson disappears into the house before he can catch her gaze. it's for the best, he thinks, as he steps away from Greyson Connors, wary of being punched again.

"i'm not alone, greyson, and whether you like it or not, i'm not the only one who knows hoenn is better with me as their elite four."

he looks over his shoulder at the man.

Annalise's presence brings along a sharp spike of confusion. She'd come along after him, to talk to Matias? To check on him? To--

His eyes land on the shirt clearly too large for her; on bare thighs and an expression of shock too vivid to belong to a woman who'd only just arrived; of a woman who'd been caught red-handed.

Matias's words ring hollow in his ears, echoing and taunting. It was a sign that the man he'd come to hate wasn't a product of Groudon but had always been nestled beneath the mantle of Avatarship. The man he kept hidden from most beneath a veil; a mask.

The urge to destroy the man and the entire ranch and the woods that surrounded it- rose like magma, but he suppresses it; encapsulating it in a mental lid that shakes and bubbles from the pressure that mounts.

He'd puts more willpower into that single action than he'd thought possible--he'd killed Velmos, wouldn't this be just as simple? Did he have Groudon's power? Could he do it?

Nausea settles like oil atop water, hand twitching against the action it screams for. He doesn't even register Matias as having stepped away, eyes locked on a doorframe that no longer held the shape of someone he once loved--that he still loved.

He needed to leave. He needed to keep this under control lest he'll shatter. Greyson wouldn't give Matias the satisfaction of knowing the tide of his mental foundation was receding dangerously.

He can't keep the cold anger from his voice, however.

"Stay away from what is to come, Silph. War has the tendency to leave casualties beyond the obvious, and I have no doubt, you'll be a target sought by many."

Iron Valiant trailing, lance at her side, Greyson steps away and back down the same trail. When he finally gets a moment away, the panic comes surging in like a tsunami.

the universe feels like it's ground itself to a halt. the stillness of the house blurs around her as she soundlessly makes her way through the living room, up the stairs, into a bedroom that no longer feels welcoming to her. every promise she's made — to greyson, to matias — is tarnished in her wake. she only knows the strangling impulse to leave, gaining its strength with each quick, shallow breath she takes. [break][break]she's so preoccupied with her thoughts that she doesn't realize matias is there until she catches a glimpse of him in her peripheral. surprise flickers across her face as she regards him in full, melting away into hurt and anger a beat later. [break][break]"why?" [break][break]her voice returns, the sharpness in her tone as accusatory as a pointed finger. [break][break]"it's not enough just to be with me?" there's a wobble in her question, a traitorous bow beneath the weight of more precarious emotions. matias is no stranger to the anger that drowns his fellow elite four. it might not show in their expression but through their voice alone, he recognizes it as the same shade as his. it feels vindicating to know he isn't the only one afflicted by such conditions.

he leaves the elite four with nothing more than a, "be safe," before making his way back into the ranch where another problem awaits.

"oh, calm yourself. you think i wanted to spend my morning going for a nice stroll around the lake with him? he showed up unannounced, so i improvised."

he shrugs.

"he would've found out eventually."

deprived of sleep and rest, annoyance and frustration burn easier than usual without the need for an accelerant, though her words certainly act as one.

"that's not what i said."

he clicks his tongue, pinching the bridge of his nose as he feels a headache coming on.

"he came here to rub salt in the wounds and to reiterate that hoenn is better off without me, but i didn't care. all i cared about was leading him away from the house so he wouldn't see you."

another click of his tongue before he spares a gesture at her.

"i did it for you."

to protect her, even if there's nothing that needs protecting from. Greyson Connors's judgment matters little to him.

the flat circle of their relationship bends and folds to bring them back to the same point again and again and again. he can't say he's surprised but he can certainly say he feels dejected, perhaps even discarded.
