Having seen squires at their practice before, Zaria chose to stay back just a step. She watched as Howard speared the hand, running it through. She nodded, appreciating the blow struck by the squire.[break][break]
“You’ve got a good body for the weapon. Lean, and it’s all in the arms. There is no better weapon ever concocted by man than the halberd. Were I to choose a weapon besides the sword, it would be that.”[break][break]
“When we make camp for the evening, we will keep practicing. The hero will want to keep up your training with Pokemon.” She paused, looking to Hattori, Vortigern, and Roland. “It’s passing queer that they trap such creatures in balls. Hoenn is a strange place. You settle matters with Pokemon instead of your own martial might.”[break][break]
“It requires strategy, warrior. I doubt you’d be able to grasp the basics. You can’t simply swing that sword and make all of your problems go away.” Said Crystal, smiling smugly before riding up to join her father.[break][break]
A vein bulged on Zaria’s forehead. She saw red, grinding her teeth. Turning on Howard, she shouted a command.[break][break]
“Tell her to eat shit, Howard!”

Never in a million years would Howard have considered himself 'lean'. 'Close to starving to death' was more appropriate. Still, he tried not to look pleased at the compliment. His hat wobbled slightly as he chuckled.[break][break]

"You humble me, Zaria. In my world, I never bothered to pick up a sword and I hardly commanded Pokémon. I'm not particularly good at either. I've always preferred a chisel, hammer, and brush to a blade. I was never tested in the crucible like Navy was." [break][break]

Navy's life was misery, a constant struggle for each and every step he took. Howard's was easier, though he had lost his way when his knowledge of his fields began to plateau. [break][break]

The two had shared a moment, before Crystal had come in with a sledgehammer. Much like the original Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, this version was entirely without tact. Perhaps this version simply didn't care as much. It still seemed in character with the original version.[break][break]

As Zaria began to bark back like a dog, Howard turned to her and rolled his eye. [break][break]

"What am I, your squire?" He turned to look straight ahead. "Tell her yourself."[break][break]

“EAT SHIT, ASSHOLE!” She barked with the venom of a young woman, “FALL OFF YOUR HORSE!” Crystal turned her head, her expression unreadable save for the vaguest hint of a smile on her lips.[break][break]
A heartbeat later, and an explosion rocked the world. A Pokemon had wandered too close to a power spot. Its fate was sealed. As above in Hoenn, so below in Galar. Its death warrant was sealed, and all it could do was despair, rampage, and fly.[break][break]
It was a Charizard, noble dragon of Kanto. Navy did not know when the creatures were imported to Kanto, but Galarians loved the beasts. Their wings made them terrible foes when caught in the throes of Dynamax. It towered above them, a blazing inferno, its heat threatening to cook them within their armor.[break][break]
“Everyone.” The Rider called out. “It’s like I told you. Crystal, Hattori. Pepper it. I’ll chain it down. Zaria, Howard, Vortigern, Roland. On the ground.” Valkyrie cried her consent to the plan. Once more, the Rider was home.[break][break]
Charizard looked down upon them, its eyes full of fury. Opening its maw, flames spewed down upon them. The Rider broke left, most of the rest broke right. Arrows and shuriken flew, Navy’s anchor shot hit home. The beast was pulled down to the earth, writhing and angry.[break][break]
“Now!” He shouted to his companions. All flew into action, but none had the reach to pierce the beast’s heart. None save one.

Howard almost fell off his horse. Almost.[break][break]

The only reason that he didn't was because of Gwyar Wledig's well-built saddle. Even as the squire stumbled, his Rapidash kept his footing as it charged forward. [break][break]

All around him, the party of heroes lunged into his battle. Hattori danced with his set of kunai. The foreign weapon was well-built, despite the fact that Galar had likely never seen a weapon like it besides the occasional weapon brought back from sailors' journeys to Johto and Kanto. [break][break]

As Vortigern stopped the Gigantamaxed Charizard's mighty claw with his physical might. The Garchomp groaned with the exertion, but much like in its battle with Regice, it never gave an inch. Arrows flew, hitting chinks in the armor and peppering against barriers made from Dynergy. With a well-placed chain, Navy dragged the dragon down to earth.[break][break]

As the Charizard fell, it reminded Howard of Roy Aker. [break][break]

"I got it!" Howard swerved out of an ensuing path of fire, the plume in his hat smoking from the near miss. His horse narrowly dodged another strike, and Howard bobbed out of the way of a stray arrow. "I can do this!"[break][break]

His older body screamed as he got a grip on his halberd. Dated muscles groaned with exertion as Howard put his weight into the ensuing swing. His eye narrowed as it closed in on the Charizard's exposed chest. Dynamax would kill this Pokémon, even if Howard and Navy didn't. It was a dead creature walking. [break][break]

A sack of meat. [break][break]

Robbed of life by Eternatus. [break][break]

This was a mercy. [break][break]

He stabbed upwards into its heart. It stopped beating. It palpated as the Charizard let out a low groan that caused pebbles to rumble. Howard twisted, before removing the weapon. As it left the beast's body, Dynergy and blood flowed from the wound like a torrent, and Howard felt himself showered in it. [break][break]

Memories. Hallucinations. Pain. [break][break]

The Charizard fell with an earthshaking thud.

They had, in minutes, vanquished a foe that had plagued Galarian tales for generations. Looking back at Wedgehurst, far beyond the poisoned fog, he wondered if they saw the battle from the high walls of the city. Howard was granted the honor of the killing blow, and Navy smiled. He took to the halberd well.[break][break]
“Well struck.” He praised, wiping sweat from his brow. Fighting was hot work, and he felt like a furnace in Gwyar’s armor. “We should all take a minute to rest. I doubt anything will be brave enough to attack us after that.” He looked to Vortigern. “And if it does, you handle them, big guy.”[break][break]
“…” The black dragon said nothing, but lumbered off to the edge of their momentary sanctuary.[break][break]
“Look. The Charizard is holding something.” Crystal was right. In its palm was a green crystal, a tempest swirling within. “Passing strange. These were not here before.”[break][break]
“No.” Zaria agreed. Battle had calmed her temper down. Some instinctual knowledge, some primal link between their souls, told him that would be a common tactic for dealing with that side of the lady knight. “I do not remember these being here when I—” She stopped herself as she took hold of the crystal.[break][break]
Inside, she saw a world of flying islands. There was no more ground, only land hanging in empty space. Hurricanes blew, and no being in that world was as powerful as the bird.[break][break]
The crystal disappeared into her, only a strong gust of wind marking that it was ever there. Zaria sat down on the ground, exhausted from the battle and her vision of another world.[break][break]
“My Lord, my Lord!” Hattori exclaimed. “I’ve found a place to camp! Methinks we could wait on the train there.”[break][break]
“Well, let’s go check it out.” Navy was already marching, knowing what Howard’s answer would be.

Another day, another Tera Crystal. How many did that make? Four? Howard made a point to not verbally mention it, lest those around Howard and Navy began to glitch out. [break][break]

Whatever Tera Crystals were, they were bugs in reality. They created disruptions that this alternate Galar were not meant to handle. They may have infected the Ancient Tomb and caused the initial dream, but invading the dream itself? That was a different matter entirely? [break][break]

They had no reason to exist. [break][break]

"Sounds good. Let's see what the frog found." Howard caught up to Navy and brought his Rapidash to a casual trot. It was on a hill, prime terrain to stage a train heist fit for a box office release from Pokestar Studios. In the distance, a train track snaked through the Wild Area's countryside like a snake. "Not bad, Hattori."[break][break]

He snapped his fingers. [break][break]

"Alright, let's set up camp! Tents! Fires! The whole shebang!" Howard crawled off of his horse, almost tripping on the stirrup as he did so. Again, his joints ached. Blasted age. It'd do him good to be off his feet, and even better to stay out of the saddle for a spell. "We have a heist to plan."[break][break]

Tents were raised, and before long, a crackling fire burned in the middle of camp, smoke crackling and curling up into the sky like the breath of a dragon. The admin unceremoniously sat on a stump, struggling to shine and sharpen his weapon. His brow furrowed as he struggled with the weapon. [break][break]

"Hey Zaria, how do I do this properly?"

“It’s not so hard.” The knight pulled a whetstone from her pack, sitting beside Howard and demonstrating with her own sword. “It’s about moving it with confidence across the stone. You have a whetstone, yes? Not too fast, not too slow. Steady, across the breadth of the stone.” She pressed it along the edge of her black blade, working from hilt to tip.[break][break]
“I admit you’ve an easier job of it than I have. All of a halberd’s sharp bits are focused up on top.” She paused, caught in an old memory. Her smile waxed nostalgic, looking across the camp. “I used to put too much force into sharpening my blade. By the creator, the fairy king chided me time and again, either because I’d break his swords or his whetstones.” Another laugh. “Or the other squire’s skulls.”[break][break]
“A question, Howard.” She nodded at Navy, who was deep in a one-sided conversation with Roland. “His name. Navy. That seems…unusual. His brother gave him the name?”

The whetstone danced across Howard's halberd as he chewed his lip absentmindedly. He mirrored the knight's maneuvers, and soon the night was filled with the cacophony of metal on stone. A dull weapon was a worthless one, geared more towards the breaking of bones than the cleaving of flesh.[break][break]

The point of a blade was to kill efficiently. A dull sword was no longer an instrument of death, but a torturer's weapon. [break][break]

"Don't break your blade on my skull, and I won't complain." Howard smiled wryly as h scratched his head. His hair was not yet receding, but it had thinned slightly in his older age. That, or he had chosen to cut it short. A shame, given the efficiency of the ponytail. "Regarding your fairy king..." [break][break]

Shink. The night became quieter as the admin put down his whetstone. [break][break]

"I met him. At least, I think I did. In our world, he rules in two." Two Calyrex on two different sides of the conflict. Whoever won would have to suffer the loneliness of existing in a world where it had also lost. When the two met, would Calyrex fuse together back into one? "I taught him a lot. His memory had evaporated, leaving him with duty and no way to fulfill it. I was his teacher and his advisor and perhaps even his confidant, but I was not his friend. A king's throne is a lonely seat, Zaria." [break][break]

Kingship was a heavy burden. Thinking of it gave him a fresh spell of contempt for Remiel Calcifet and his entire family. He had gotten to run to Rocket and play at admin, before running away when he had the power to do. Cowardly. Craven.[break][break]

But perhaps that was because nobody in Rocket could understand the weight of kingship.[break][break]

"In our world, there's a superstition that the best trainers are named after colors. Red. Blue. Gold. Silver. There are great plays foretelling their journeys. Millions of people watch these plays. We call them movies." He gave Zaria a look. "Some of the kids in these plays are younger than you." [break][break]

If there was one thing that Howard and Navy shared, it was a love for film. [break][break]

"His brother wanted him to be strong, so he gave him the nickname. Navy. A color." Howard's voice was odd for a spell as he looked at the sheriff chatting with Roland. "His brother wished for his sibling to be mighty, and he became as such." [break][break]

It was a pure wish, yet Howard's voice was sad. [break][break]

"Gabe's desire was a curse."

She was quiet for a long time after Howard told his story. Zaria worked at her sword, sharpening it to a polish. Memories of a time so old men had forgotten it played across her mind. Around them, wyrd lights shone. When she looked at them, she thought she saw her own reflection cast back, eyes cast deep in shadow.[break][break]
“Movies.” She finally said. “I wonder if I can accompany you back to your world, when Galar is free. The Rider seems adamant you will both return once Eternatus is vanquished.” She sat her sword aside, returning it to a dark leather scabbard.[break][break]
“I would like to see one of these plays.” She knew that was beside the point. Standing up, she beckoned Howard to follow.[break][break]
“We should get some more water. I don’t know how Navy’s frog found that spring, or how he purified it, but it’s certainly made our lives easier.” Without turning to see if Howard would accompany her, she sat off.[break][break]
“I have a brother.” She said as she trekked. “We grew up on legends of old knights. The king collected the very best of them at his castle. Many of them had names like that.”[break][break]
“Ser Crimson, of the two blades. Ser Rhys the Gold, whose armor was never struck by a lance. Brave Ser Basil, first into battle riding his Stantler.” Around them were will-o-wisps, fluttering about Zaria like old ghosts come to comfort a girl who dreamed of glory. “My brother told me I would be one of them one day, when my team vanquished his time and again at our games.”[break][break]
“He named me Cyan, and I wore the name proudly when I pledged myself to the king.”

Howard almost fell off his horse. Almost.[break][break]

He said nothing of Zaria leaving this world to join theirs. From what Navy had told him, this world had vanished and left little behind back at the Ancient Tomb. That should have been the end of it. Navy's daughter had vanished, as had his son. Yet the world had persisted after the chapter had closed on the memory of Galar. [break][break]

Was it possible for her to return with them? Unlikely. It lacked precedent, and Howard placed weight on precedent. [break][break]

"I know none of those names." Howard confessed as the two trekked forward. "It's refreshing, knowing that there are blanks in history that I cannot recall. It means that there's more to learn. More to remember." [break][break]

He had wanted to see this dream. He had wanted to verify it. Yet now that he was here... [break][break]

"I see." Howard's voice was as soft as the flickering lights that surrounded them. The dark was heavy, yet he wasn't afraid. Zaria wasn't, so he had no reason to be. "So your brother cursed you, too." [break][break]

Epithets were their holder's pride and joy, but they could become far more than that. Time distorted everything, even the purest aspirations and desires of a brother. The original reason for a title could be lost. It could be misinterpreted. All that remained was an echo of a sentiment nobody could remember.[break][break]

Navy. [break][break]

Cyan. [break][break]

The weight of titles grew heavy on the shoulders of heroes. [break][break]

"You don't call yourself Cyan anymore, though. You introduced yourself as Zaria. Why'd you abandon the name?" Howard mused as they came across a pool of pure water. Their reflections stared back like mirrors, and Howard came to see the person he would've been in this dream, had he fallen asleep. "Arceus, I'm old."[break][break]

He turned to Zaria. [break][break]

"What was your brother's nickname?"

“I didn’t remember it, not until we found those crystals.” Said Zaria, when at last they reached the spring. A gentle mist gathered around the clear water. It might as well have been an oasis in the desert, for all the trouble they had finding drinking water. The poisoned dragon knew many ways to kill, and turning the body’s own needs against it was one of them.[break][break]
“Zaria and Cyan. I am both, and they are both me.” She drew water from the well. When she saw her own reflection, it was another face gazing back up at her – that of a proud and dignified wolf. It moved between the wolf and a much older woman, missing an ear and heavily scarred. The path of heroism is perilous indeed.[break][break]
“I called him Magenta, after the color of the team he captained.” She smiled a young woman’s smile, full of mischief and moxie. “He preferred it to my first suggestion: Ser Pink. He was always so…” Her voice suddenly carried grief, for she missed her brother. “…gentle. Father sent him to the Isle of Armor, that the Fighting Master might draw out his inner fighting spirit.”[break][break]
“We did not see each other again until we were fully grown, and we were the last knights left.”

The knight had forgotten much on her journey, and the Tera Crystals were returning the memories to her like a shattered painting being put back together with painstaking patience. When her memories returned, what should he remember?[break][break]

How would she change? [break][break]

"The best knights are the gentle ones, I think. A gentle knight knows when to put down his sword." To be gentle in a harsh world was the ultimate display of character. It was the decision to be better in a world that tried its hardest to crush that aspect of the human spirit. "That is the meaning of chivalry." [break][break]

Somewhere along the road, chivalry bled into heroism, and the sands were stained with the blood of battle. [break][break]

"It's the simple moments, I think, that contextualize our struggle. Who put this well here? Why? What was their story? Does anyone even remember it? Does anyone care?" Memories were the lifeblood of the world. Their remains were carved into the world in the form of this well. "When we're gone, will someone else find it?" [break][break]

A path twisted away from the well towards a cliff overlooking the Wild Area. Howard's eye widened.[break][break]

Something urged him on. This path existed for a reason. [break][break]

He followed it, leaving his pail behind.

“There’s beauty in not being remembered.” She said as she followed Howard. Their horses stayed by the water, drinking greedily from the well. Somewhere along the way, Valkyrie joined them. The horse was thirstier even than the Rapidash. [break][break]
“Few will remember names. Deeds? How we lived, how we died? Those are what outlast us. ” [break][break]
“I hope history is kind to you, Howard Slayte. I hope you come to your senses before it’s too late. My brother found his fangs on the Isle of Armor, but he never lost his heart.” [break][break]

Ahead was a grave. It stood in monument to some great, rocky creature from a bygone age. No name marked the grave. None mourned, save the dirge of howling wind. It was a burial cairn, like many scattered across Galar after the invasions that spread Perrserkers in the region. [break][break]

A single crystal bloomed from the grave. It looked like old amber, encasing a rock. [break][break]

“Another of the crystals. It feels…improper to take this one.”

Why was she here? [break][break]

Long ago, in the Giant Chasm, Howard had made a vow.[break][break]

He would not allow his Aerodactyl to fight on the battlefield. She would remain safe, unmarred beyond her struggle with the Walking Wake. He would only rely on the mighty from the moment she had lost her eye while fighting a stronger threat. He would only use giants. Titans. Regice. [break][break]

That had been part of the reason he had lusted after other giants. If he surrounded himself with the strong, he would be strong. [break][break]

Shirley would never be hurt again. [break][break]

Yet in the real world. Regice prepared to destroy Dewford, and Shirley had sacrificed herself to allow Howard to fulfill his objective. She had gotten hurt in order to ensure Regice's ascension. He had placed so much stock on Regice that he had forgotten the Pokémon that had brought him so far. [break][break]

He had never been strong. She had been strong.[break][break]

"It's improper for you, but it is my right to take this one, Zaria." His voice was quiet, hoarse, and weary. His voice was shaky, as if he was on the verge of tears. "This is my Aerodactyl's grave, after all." [break][break]

Around the cairn, the bones of corrupted Pokémon and the scarred earth that implied the former presence of Eternatus's hands were plentiful. The Pokémon here had not fallen without a fight. Howard reached out and plucked the crystal, marveling at it. [break][break]

It looked like the Old Amber that Howard had ressurrected. His first Pokemon, grown from a whisper of the past. He remembered when she first opened her eyes from inside the restoration machine. The elation he felt. The excitement when he held her in his arms. [break][break]

All that was left was a memory. [break][break]

"She shouldn't be here. I wasn't in this dream originally. She wasn't here either. Why?" It was a mockery meant to demean him. It was meant to make him feel something for this world, as if he hadn't coveted a visit to it since he had first heard of it. "Shirley." [break][break]

He had saved her life twice. She had saved his life an infinite amount of times. This exchange was not equal, but she had fought until the end. He had spent a long time chasing after Regice's siblings for might.[break][break]

Yet Shirley had been the power he had sought all along. [break][break]

He wept.
