for a second, it seemed like they had made a mistake, anyways. poppy was already in etali's beak, and the kilowattrel was preparing to deliver that final blow that would end the match. there was no way the hatterene would be able to fight if she was dropped from this height.

instead of the abrupt ending, the brilliance of the dazzling gleam sends them both plummeting, having been enough to distract the bird type and send him to the ground hard. he's the first one to land, due to his speed alone, and the force of it seemed to have trapped him in a crater of his own making.

and then poppy landed, too, just as hard as the bird pokemon she had been fighting. there's a moment where she's still, recovering from the shock of it, and then starts to get up- just to collapse into a defeated pile next to the electric type. the blow had been hard enough. she didn't want to fight anymore, either.

with no obvious winner in sight, kasper clicks their tongue before glancing across at their opponent. "so what now?" they hadn't been in a gym battle before, so scenarios like this were completely new to them.

and that was it. sort of. as soon as the podiums are lowered, the gym leader is coming over to make conversation easier- and to tell kasper that now they have to wait for the official judgement on who had won. "i'll be honest, i think i mostly just got lucky." kasper admits, but they're already grinning. "i did have fun, though."

the idea of trying for something else like this was tempting, but...first they needed to see what the judges thought. and their pokemon needed a long deserved rest. and maybe they, themself, needed one too- even though they hadn't dealt with most of it, the excitement of the battle was already starting to wear off.

they blink in surprise twice-once at the apparent tie, and then again at the fact that they had technically won in the eyes of the league. a part of them almost felt a little guilty, but....they weren't about to argue. it was kind of neat to have their name listed on something so official.

after the short ceremony, they made their way to the exit with the badge tucked firmly against their palm and a few comforting pats directed to their pokemon. and a wave at the gym leader, although kasper couldn't make any solid promises on seeing him around.
