Zev had not been to the top of Lesser Megalo Tower in months, not since that fateful day last November when he came face-to-face with Necrozma. Still, he remembered the winding route upwards. [break][break]

Groaning, mindless Megalopolans and wild Ultra Beasts had refilled the corridors of the tower since his last foray, but these he easily dispatched. He was not alone, either; fern delaney joined him on the ascent. Between their powers and their Pokémon, they kept the horrors of Lesser Megalopolis at bay. [break][break]

Zev recalled his Illumina Chandelure, who had lit up the path for them in the darkness. Then he turned to Fern. "Ready whenever you are."

To be expected, traversing the streets of the Megalopolis was easy work between themself and Zev Harcourt. The empty groans of Megalopolans faded to nothing—cut down by the pair and then receding to background noise as they climbed higher and higher up the tower.[break][break]
Until they were far above all the rest.[break][break]
The buzz of curious anticipation cut through their system, as electric as the lightning they commanded. Fern looked over at Tapu Koko and then to Zev. “No time like the present,” they crooned, smile stretching wide across their face. Of course, they didn’t truly know what to anticipate in this. So really there was no truly being ready for whatever might come.[break][break]
“You are certain it will come?” They asked, head tipping back as they peered at the expanse of darkness above. Tapu Koko, as it typically did when it had nothing to distract it within this realm, fidgeted.[break][break]
The guardian zipped from end to end at the top of the tower, though it never left Fern’s periphery. Was necrozma why it grew so restless? Was that why it wished to leave with them? Or was it eager to meet its supposed maker once again?

Zev turned his gaze skyward, toward the brutal darkness that spanned from horizon to horizon. Above them, stars glittered with the cold dispassion reflected in his eyes. When he spoke, his voice carried a note of dreadful purpose. [break][break]

"It will come." [break][break]

Standing there atop the monument of Lesser Megalopolis' destruction, he let himself be consumed by the psychic link connecting him to his patron. Immediately, his consciousness rushed far across time and space, seeking. His heartbeat thudded in perfect rhythm with the movements of his god. [break][break]

With sudden abruptness, Necrozma turned its prismatic gaze upon him. A cascading tide of black crystal spread across the Devourer's exposed skin, clusters forming even along his cheeks and jaw. His blue eyes shone pale with starlight. [break][break]

In the sky above them, a thin, vertical line of light formed. Then it expanded with sudden violence as enormous obsidian claws ripped apart the very fabric of Ultra Space. The colossal, angular body of the Destroyer of Worlds stepped through, dwarfing the tower. Its prism-like eyes flashed with the whole spectrum of colors. [break][break]

Zev's entire body thrummed, each cell aligned to the presence of his patron. Necrozma rumbled in answer, an alien noise that shook the very air. Sensing the oddity of the gathering, it leaned closer, casting an ominous shadow upon the humans and Pokémon that had come to petition it.

“Well then I will take your word for it.” Fern had no reason to doubt the certainty that Zev spoke with. They’d not encountered the truest form of Necrozma. They were not privy to the inner workings of its mind and motives. Though they were curious as to how deep its connection with Zev ran. Was it woven through the man now as a unified tether? Or was he only a vessel?[break][break]
It was more than a bit beyond them, though they were bound to find out.[break][break]
Their head tilted back further to observe the sky. The glitter of stars stretched high and far above them in a seemingly limitless expanse. Where did this space end, and their world’s began?[break][break]
Agitation spurred Tapu Koko into more frantic movement. Electricity pulsed from the guardian, a crackling flare that bathed the rooftop in golden glow. But Fern’s attention had fixed on the reason for Tapu Koko’s sudden frenzy. Crystallization engulfed the Beast–a precursor of what came next.[break][break]
There was no way to fully comprehend the way Necrozma pulled the fabric of space apart at its seams. Fern could only stare, mouth parted on a breath that fell somewhere between wonder and mute fascination. Their head tilted as the vastness of the Destroyer itself engulfed their vision. It swallowed all of the above, so there was only below.[break][break]
Another pulse of electricity flowed from Tapu Koko though it only crawled over the surface of the building, rather than any sort of attack. It was antsy and deferential at once. Contrarian in the way Fern had always known it to be. The light caught on Necrozma’s prismatic gaze, bathing them in the glow of a spectrum of color. [break][break]
The echo of its language hummed through the admin, though there was no way for them to understand what it said. But they knew it spoke. Could feel it down in the marrow of their bones as they were all shrouded in dark. For once, their proclivity toward snappy quips was silenced. Only a stray glance made its way toward Zev as he communed with the one who had made him its Devourer.

The electricity that surged over the roof of the tower drew Zev's attention away from Necrozma and toward the reason for seeking it out in the first place. [break][break]

He could not even begin to decipher Tapu Koko's behavior. Since it was not attacking, however, he assumed it wasn't being aggressive. Even the sparks that skittered over Megalopolan metal and stone were harmless; Zev drank them in, savoring the warmth siphoned from them. [break][break]

Craning his neck to gaze upon his patron once more, he said, "Necrozma. We've come to ask you questions." He gestured toward Fern's shiny Tapu Koko. "A Megalopolan told us you created this Pokémon, but it's unlike any of your other creations. It's not a Shadow Pokémon, nor is it like the shard you gave me." [break][break]

Zev tilted his head, curious. "Why? What purpose does it serve for you?" [break][break]

Cyllora had told them why, but he knew better than to believe words laced with bitterness and fear.

They weren’t sure they had the standing to ask questions of Necrozma in the same manner that Zev so openly did. Fern watched, head canted to the side.[break][break]
There was a level of regard between patron and avatar. Of course, they understood as much. However, even their tie with Tapu Koko seemed so…miniscule in comparison to this. Necrozma was so vast– what was it like to have something so unending choose you?[break][break]
Fern thought that, if it were them, there would not be anything of them left. Swallowed whole in the darkness of Necrozma’s everything.[break][break]
Maybe that was the source of Tapu Koko’s agitation. It had been plucked from the vine, and feared being called back.[break][break]
Eventually they did add to the questions, “Are there more like Tapu Koko?” Their mind drifted back to the Tapu Bulu that was still drifting through the city now. The other tucked away in the depths of the Ultra Crater. But were those, or it, a part of some collective whole that spawned from Necrozma’s whims?[break][break]
Or was it yet another disconnection from Tapu Koko’s natural kin?[break][break]
Something eager stole over them then–insatiable curiosity as Tapu Koko’s pacing slowed and it came to hover alongside them. As if it too was anxious to know the inner workings of Necrozma’s will, no matter how independent it had been created to behave.

the necrozma's monstrous form looms before them, suspended in the air as the darkest tabernacle. the metals in its arms, brutal as they are beautiful, shine with every agonizing tremulation.

by psychic power, it communicates answers:

what creature does not want to create? to be able to forge a being in one's own image, to see it grow and breathe and to carry on one's own memory. one's own legacy no matter how gnarled and twisted it may be.

next, the created tapus were an attempt to monitor the worlds of ultra space: guardians surveying the great expanse for energy, for light. some deep-seated delusion may suggest a futile attempt to reforge some redemption for necrozma— but maddened eyes would only perceive these tapus as reminders of ultra megalopolis' destruction. of a civilization entirely lost to darkness. necrozma is a monster, after all. how could one forgive it—and how could necrozma forgive the megalopolans?

but another purpose reveals itself in the mindscape. should necrozma fail in its goals of returning to full power, the tapus will carry its will.

of other tapus like fern delaney's, the necrozma answers by action.

violently, like canines tearing into bloody meat, it claws open rifts to various worlds and grants them a view of each.

one is a WATER WORLD, filled with coursing waterfalls and caves.

another is a ROCKY WORLD. dirt paths are bordered by staggering rock formations and plant-life. dirt clouds billow through.

the last is the ULTRA CRATER, a world the two may already be familiar with.

the rifts close, but the necrozma seems to suggest that it can grant them passage whenever the two would like. whenever the two and whomever they invite are ready.

The clarity and complexity of Necrozma's answer, received through their psychic link, blew Zev away. Never before had he received such a comprehensible response from his Patron, stripped of any alienness. None of it was communicated through words, of course, or even imagery, but through feeling. [break][break]

The swell of pride in its creations and their power. The grim satisfaction that even should the worst come to pass, others will still remain to further its goal. The confidence in such far-reaching authority and the obedience of its pawns. [break][break]

This must be why other people want children, Zev thought. A word slithered through his mind before fading into the background again: the name of his daughter in another timeline. [break][break]

Necrozma tore through the fabric of reality, drawing its Avatar's attention to the colorful landscapes of other worlds. He recognized Ultra Crater at once, but the other two were unknown to him. [break][break]

Turning to Fern, Zev said, "We should gather small teams to explore those other places. We're too ill-equipped now to make the trip right away."

How strange it was to behold Necrozma in this way.[break][break]
They hadn’t been sure as to how it would answer the questions ask of it, but they weren’t expecting the way the responses flooded their system. Tapping into their senses and enlightening them with the sensation of feeling.[break][break]
It nested in the corners of their mind, a budding of fascination taking root. Hazy-eyed, their gaze drifted toward Tapu Koko. Solemnly, it returned their stare. So it was intimately of Necrozma all along. Silent in its purpose, driven forward toward whatever end goal that was never of its own design.[break][break]
Was Fern simply the most interesting warm body to bind itself to? Perhaps they were not as special a being as they thought themself to be.[break][break]
For such a headstrong creature, it was difficult to reconcile. They no longer knew if they were referring to themself or Tapu Koko.[break][break]
Fern ambled forward, curiosity propelling them as they leaned closer to the tears in space that Necrozma had created. They were inclined to leap forward without hesitation—impulse driven and prone toward acting on the fly when the situation best suited them.[break][break]
Perhaps it wasn’t smart.[break][break]
The sudden desire to know and find out, however, was a powerful force in its right. “I would very much li—“[break][break]
As though he could intuit the burgeoning recklessness in Fern, Zev’s voice sounded from nearby. With a forlorn sigh, they relented and turned back toward him. Their shoulders slumped. “I suppose you are correct. Teams would be useful,” they conceded, begrudging each syllable.[break][break]
“It would be so exciting, though!” They couldn’t help but add, as though such a thing would sway him.

Even before Fern opened their mouth to express eagerness for an expedition, Zev saw in the hunger to satiate curiosity in their eye. He understood that desire well, but pragmatism was ever his strength. [break][break]

Craning his neck to regard Necrozma once more, Zev expressed his gratitude not through words but through their psychic bond. The obsidian monstrosity leaned back, putting colossal distance between itself and the top of Lesser Megalo Tower. The air rushed to fill in the space where it once was. [break][break]

With a knife-like claw, Necrozma opened another Ultra Wormhole and disappeared into its shimmering depths. An uneasy silence fell upon the ruined city in the wake of its destroyer's departure. [break][break]

"We should start thinking about who to bring with us," Zev said to Fern as he turned away to descend the stairs. "Experts in Ultra Space, maybe." [break][break]

Already, a couple names crowned the top of his list.
