the nidoking is the first to fall. annalise feels her sygna suit disconnect right before her altaria returns to her pokeball, succumbing to poison and to sedative shadows that roll in. the world seems to slow around her, accompanied by a nagging heaviness behind her eyes that persists despite the steady beat of adrenaline through her veins. [break][break]walsh's voice drifts in close beside her, spelling a warning against the shell of her ear. she whirls around reflexively, disturbing the shadows beside her, but it's only another trick, another sucker punch to her psyche. eager to be captured. alone. incapable. he had only struck her once, but every barbed comment he makes at her expense might as well be a closed fist. [break][break]like a light to walsh's dark, matias calls out to her, burning away seeds of doubt before they can take root. she doesn't say anything to him, but there is flinty resolve in her face when their eyes meet. instead, she turns her gaze away and challenges the shadows: [break][break]"fight me then!"[break][break]she's just a girl, after all, isn't she? and mew is just the league's darling, unable to tilt the scales of fate in her favor. his underestimation of her is honed into a lure meant to draw him out of his shroud, staked on the ego of avatars.

[break][break]his answer doesn't matter, not really. she knows anything that comes from his mouth is meant to disparage her, to shake her confidence down to its foundations. she's talking to talk, not to know. she needs to draw him out. she needs to distract him away from matias. [break][break]"don't know how to throw a punch without your powers?"[break][break]he steps out of the ruin that remains of his shadows, hand reaching out for her. though she raises her arms to protect herself, she doesn't remain its intended recipient. instead, matias' hitmonlee bears the brunt of the inky smoke expelled from his palm. [break][break]the fighting-type lashes out blindly in the throes of fatigue. at them. at her. mew came here to keep her safe, and so it does; a psychic shields her from the blow and shepherds the hitmonlee towards its sleep, indifferent to allegiances in the face of danger. [break][break]beneath the cover of chaos, annalise tries to capitalize with a punch, backed by the rotation of her hip and pent-up resentment for him and his organization. it would be enough to split her knuckles on his teeth, to know he's real in any tangible sense.

as the boss lunges for annalise, smoke billows from his fangs and streams across his diving face like melting ichor. [break][break]

"but you have never been in yours. you have always been a fish out of water. there is no place for you in this world save for a dingy, cramped cell."[break][break]

the punch slams into his teeth. pushes past his palate and through his neck. his head falls forward, held up by annalise's forearm, jaw unhinged like a seviper swallowing the smallest swablu.[break][break]

but the horrific vision falls into a cascade of smoke around her. a fount of smoke reappears by matias, spiralling into walsh's shape.[break][break]

"i gave her that tainted ruby." the boss says. "however, the gift was always meant for you." he does not smile, but his voice does. "i expected a thank you, not an insult when you arrived. after all, practicing gratitude during grief is healing, is it not?"

as declan walsh's shadowy figure licks his side, matias finally turns with a scowl that only deepens. his response shifts to cater to annalise henderson, further shadowing the truth of primeval.[break][break]

with the rifling winds of hurricane, truth weaves itself in the brief privacy it creates.[break][break]

his words are fuel to the pyre she built the day Felix Gallagher leveled his gun at her in dewford. she sucks in a breath through clenched teeth, sharp as the pulse of anger that ripples through her, and punches. she feels his teeth scrape against the back of her hand, then the softness of his mouth, then squelching viscera as her fist comes out the other side. [break][break]his head lolls forward, jaw hanging open around her forearm, and she can't do anything but stare with dawning horror as her brain catches up with what she's seeing. the look of him imprints on memory, sharing space with the prisoner who had squeezed themselves through the cell bars, with paxton concordas's rent body, with Shred's charred corpse and the dull sound it made as it hit ground. [break][break]"matias!" she calls out to him as the hurricane dies down. beyond the perimeter of his drought, the storm worsens, the sea swells, and glowing primal marks diffuse beneath violent waves. walsh's probing stare bores into her for a heartbeat, then he dismisses them both, giving way to dissolving smoke. annalise doesn't move from where she stands, eyes affixed on the spot where he had stood, hypervigilant of a reappearance that feels inevitable. [break][break]but he doesn't come back this time.[break][break]her haunted gaze snaps to matias' face, briefly, as he addresses her, watching his expression soften with blue-lit concern. she manages to hear the beginning of his question, but everything after is drowned out as kyogre looses its origin pulse on sootopolis. explosions follow, forceful enough to reverberate through the edge-of-the-world bluff they're standing on. [break][break]she reaches for matias, as she always does, and finds him closer than she remembers him being a moment ago. part of her wants to collapse into him, to soothe the branded memory of walsh with a shuddering sob, but she can't bring herself to break down now. the feeling lingers behind her racing thoughts, a lump in her throat that she can't get rid of.[break][break]she holds onto his hand tightly — a compromise for herself, almost — with her face turned away toward sootopolis. to bear witness to the rocket stronghold's ruin, promised by kyogre's fury. to imagine, with the smallest whisper of hope, that everything walsh has worked for will be ripped away by sea or by league today.
