MINOR LEAGUE GYM LEADER Andrea Vaneau IS THRUST INTO THE PERILS OF PETALBURG'S DESTRUCTION. Her joyous spirit is contested by Kouji Matsubara who must also overcome the horrid schisms of war. As he faces Andrea Vaneau and her OGERPON, he may have to resort to underhanded tactics to survive.[break][break]

As they battle in the streets of Petalburg, the two begin to comprehend the tragedy of their potential friendship that can never be.

‘Thrust’ was the right word. Andrea truly wanted no part in the war, but circumstances had forced her. How could she stand idly and watch a small town get devastated? Today it was Petalburg, tomorrow it could be her hometown.

Chaos and bloodshed echoed in the streets. It was eerily reminiscent of the Slateport invasion, but this was no simulation; this was real. Evacuating the civilians was top priority.
[break][break]
The Minor Gym Leader had brought some extra hands. Calling them gym trainers would be generous. Her gym had neither the infrastructure nor the funding of Josh Devlin’s gym. Most of her helpers were volunteers from Fallarbor whose Pokémon were trained for agricultural work, not combat.

Andrea’s Salamence with its Intimidating presence kept any Rocket grunts at bay, while her Aggron and Kangaskhan shielded the gym trainers as well as escaping civilians from debris with their use of Protect. That left herself, her signature Hydreigon, and Ogerpon in the front line.

“K-keep up the good work, everyone!” The draconic cosplayer hollered, trying to remain positive in spite of the bleakness of the situation. She had faith in her Pokémon, her friends, to pull through. However, as she would soon find out, friendship had no place on the battlefield.

There was something in the air, battle and warfare aside; he could feel the air warble with a tension he hadn’t felt before. It was different to the other battles they had fought, it wasn’t the joy of battle that had been robbed off him alone.

The walkie talkie he had was perhaps the first sign, he was being given some credit; he held power beyond that of a mere grunt, to call in a strike from far. From Rocket’s pride and joy.

Yet, this was his first battle where the lives of the faceless, nameless many sat; he who had refused to rob the lives of those whose names he did not know, who weren’t strong enough to fight back.
[break][break]
But today, he’d take the role of a mere butcher, because that was what was required of him. His Roaring Moon standing behind him, the dragon on edge just like his rider as they marched; not rode into battle. This was a major way out of the city, he wouldn’t allow anyone to get passed him.
[break][break]
He could hear them, the call of a leader providing succor to the many behind them, and the whisperings of fear. He was close, which meant a terrible deed would need to happen as Kouji stepped into the road, his foot kicking up dust.

True to its moniker, the dragon type behind him released a powerful roar before unveiling its wings, a competitor for its territory, a rival of a prior engagement, an ally against a fellow enemy. Trainer and pokemon shared the same feelings, yet neither held any warmth in their heart at this reunion.

”Andrea.” Kouji said moments before his dragon rushed forward, mouth already wide open, ready for a Jaw-Lock. This wasn’t one of his many fights against Navy for some kind of rush, nor was it a beatdown to get his head back on straight.

This was war, only brutality would be allowed.

“Kouji.” The girl said back to him, recognizing the white-haired grunt as the same one she had briefly tussled with in Area Zero. How quaint their conflict had been back then, fighting over which side of the cave ‘belonged’ to them. To think they had almost become friends after fending off a wild Scream Tail together.

Their present encounter was devoid of such nuance. Kouji was there as an enemy. Andrea quickly activated her Sygna Suit. The trainer’s PHYSICAL SHIELD made her synced partner resist the enemy’s attack, but Chomper was now locked in battle with the Roaring Moon. “Chomper, use Crunch!” The cosplayer ordered.

As the two dragons fought tooth and nail, the young PokéManiac felt a pang of sadness over what could have been. The two of them were supposed to duke it out at her Gym. That would have been an honorable battle. That would have been an enjoyable battle. This was not it.

“We shouldn’t be fighting! Not like this!” Andrea yelled at the boy turned butcher, clenching her Hydreigon-shaped fists. “You should leave right now! All of Team Rocket should leave! Petalburg doesn’t belong to you! Not this side, or that side, or any side!” She spat.

“Pon! PON!” Ogerpon yapped in solidarity with the girl. The diminutive ogress was already armed with her signature cudgel, ready to trade blows with anyone in order to protect the townspeople.

”No, it doesn’t belong to us. You don’t fight to take over things that are yours.” He said, his voice even as he tried to fight down any rising emotion. He had failed too many times the moment he felt an affinity for those he had come to like. Kouji was supposed to be a sword of Rocket, but he had failed to kill his father, failed to kill Eris Halla, and had failed to kill Isaac Merlo, he didn’t want to fail here either.

That was what he told himself.

Roaring Moon didn’t either, as it felt the jaws of the three headed dragon sink into him, a crunch, an attack of the same type shouldn’t have hurt as much as it did, not of the evil notions that it clad itself in, but it spoke to the strength of Chomper that it did, a roar raised into the air before it returned the bite with a Jaw Lock.

”But my job ain’t to invade you guys, it’s to stop you from running. Just give up, put your hands up, and I won’t have to hurt you. Any of you.” He said as he aimed his eyes behind her. ”So, will you protect the people behind you as well?”

He knew her name, he didn’t know theirs, yet was he going to break that rule of his too? Will the nameless be fell’d by his own hand? He didn’t move, waiting for the battle between Pokemon to dictate what was to be.

”Make your choice, lives depend on it, y’know?” He couldn’t bring himself to crack a smile, even if he did try to put some energy in his voice.

Surrendering would be the wiser move. It was the option that resulted in fewer casualties. However, having recently survived the horrors of prison, Andrea refused to let herself or anyone else suffer the same ordeal at Rocket’s hands.

“No. I will fight for these people!” Because if she let them down, it would be like letting the people of Fallarbor down. Small towns needed to look out for each other. “It’s you who should give up! RAWR!”

And thus, she made the regrettable decision of fighting back, making her choice known with a resounding roar--a Dragon Cheer that boosted her Pokémon’s morale.

Had Navy been there, he probably would have told her that fighting was the only option when words failed. And then there was her recent exchange with THEO BECKETT… Those two men of completely opposing worldviews had convinced her of the inevitability of this war.

Thanks to the dragon maniac’s BOLDNESS, Chomper resisted the already not-very-effective biting move, retaliating with a brutal Outrage at close range.
[break][break]
The unbreakable bond between the girl and her Hydreigon, and the stacking boosts granted by her Sygna Suit, made them a force to be reckoned with in battle. It was the sole reason they had survived against the likes of Kyurem, Kyogre, and Tapu Koko.

Sometimes, Kouji had hoped he was the type of man who could back away, turn around with his tail tucked between his legs. Perhaps, that was exactly what he was doing in this very moment, hiding away from his own worldview. Regardless, he drew for his pokeball to bring out his long term partner, his best friend perhaps.

Absol appeared in a red light, silently observing its surroundings for a moment before turning to his trainer. ”Make sure no-one can use the path to escape.” It was an underhanded way to play it, but his pokemon jumped into the tree tops, his red eye landing on Ogerpon and her trainer for a moment.

Roaring Moon had it different, it could feel that its attack wasn’t hitting as hard as it should have been, it could feel the lack of sink to its bite,and it could feel the tide ready to change. The dragon drew on the well of energy that circulated within it, coating its natural weapons with a layer of its draconic might, that is…”Use Dragon Claw” Both trainer and pokemon coming to the same conclusion as it went for Hydreigon.

But the dragon was attacking with a far stronger attack, Outrage was a dangerous move in many a way; a dragon allowed to rage freely and openly was a dangerous thing. A claw met with the force of Hydreigon’s charge, it found itself falling on the back foot. Even the environment was being torn up, as a large rock rushed past Kouji’s head.

Too fast to react to, but he didn’t have a choice, they were the ones fighting a losing battle but his hand didn’t even twitch, he didn’t consider going for calling in that strike just yet. ”You’re this strong, and you want to fight for a bunch of strangers? What’s the deal with that? A good hearted dragon? You and your hydreigon are freaks.”

Chomper’s body was raked by nasty, prehistoric claws, but the pain was not enough to quell his primal RAGE. He was classified as the Brutal Pokémon for a reason. The second Outrage was even stronger than the last thanks to Sygna Suit support.

That same RAGE was starting to affect Andrea herself as a result of their synchronization. Kouji’s derision agitated her even more, each word adding fuel to the fire. “Shut up! What’s wrong with wanting to help people? You’re the freak for wanting to hurt them when they’ve done nothing to you!”

Overhearing the Rocket grunt’s orders, Ogerpon gave chase to his Absol, jumping from one treetop to the next with the deftness of a ninja.

“PON!”
[break][break]
The orange-faced ogre attempted to Play Roughly with its prey, throwing a flurry of devastating kicks. Even with no gimmicks, the Oni’s natural strength more than sufficed.

”Wanting to hurt them? I don’t give a crap about them. They’re just in our way.” That was all Kouji had to say. Other aspects of Rockets could scream of League Evilness, and Rocket Rightousness, but he never believed in that to begin with.

But what did he believe in right now? After having suffered through Galar, being poisoned by that chain, beaten by Navy, and broken down by Zev Harcourt? He had followed the motions, tried to pretend he wasn’t afraid, and where had that gotten him? He didn’t know why he was doing the very things he was doing now.

As he took in a deep breath, filled up his lungs with air that smelled more and more of smoke as the moments passed on, he threw away thoughts of doubt. It would only harm him, he could take on the idea, of wanting to create a world where simply strength mattered again. Where the strong could do what they wished…And that he was among them.

He’d find his goal again another time.
[break][break]
He grit his teeth so hard until he could feel them almost crack, a fake smirk on his face; bravado that he dig up from the very depths of his gut. He’d been living the normal life in Rustboro for weeks until howard slayte came to grab him. Off the radar, he needed this.

Roaring Moon roared into the air as the pokemon finally found some true guidance, being torn and chipped away at had filled its feathers and scales with blood, but in that moment it released its jaws and claws, spread its wings, and began to maneauver within the tight space.

Strafing attacks, as if trying to minimize the chance of being hit while delivering its own strikes. Against this duo, even the ancient pokemon of dreams couldn’t clash head on, it had to be smart even if it hurt its draconic pride.

Absol had a different plan, as it felt a strike coming towards it by way of detect. Unlike others of its kind, it was unable to make sounds, and it was unable to see the future, it could only use its combined experience to replicate a similar effect. The shift in the air, the sounds surrounding it, what it could see, in order to predict. That was Detect, the ability to avoid danger in the last potential moment, as it leapt up and avoided a critical strike before shooting a look at its trainer, in the distance.

This pokemon was far stronger than it, as Absol hadn’t fully avoided the playful roughousing, a slight scratch across its shoulder the primary sign.

”Tch. The hell is that thing anyway, never seen one like it. You an avatar as well? Why not just use your strength to blow your enemies away? You enjoy playing hero or something?”

The Paradox Pokémon adopted a hit-and-run strategy, making use of its superior speed to zip around the aerial battlefield on its crimson wings, which sliced Chomper with their razor-sharp edges. It may not have been honorable, but it was smart, proving that Kouji had the brains to match Andrea’s brawn.

“C-Chomper!” The girl cried out in WORRY, causing her Sygna Suit to activate once more, gradually healing her draconic partner’s wounds. “I’ve got your back! Hang in there and wait for an opening!”

The order was understood. The pseudo-legendary dragon bode his time, getting Worked Up with each hit he had to endure, while his trainer’s cleric support kept him in the game.

“Have you ever considered that I DON’T wanna kill you?” The dragon-costumed woman retorted to Kouji’s taunting. “I’d much rather be your friend, but you’re not acting like a friend right now! Tearing these people away from their homes just because they’re in your way is the same as hurting them! Where are they supposed to live? Do you not give a crap about that either?”

Seeing her quadruped opponent make it out relatively unscathed made Ogerpon puff out her cheeks in frustration. After landing on the ground with a backflip, the pint-sized ogress attempted to ensnare the Absol in the thick roots of a Frenzy Plant.

Andrea shook her head at the Rocket grunt’s line of questioning. “No, I’m not an avatar. Pon is my friend, because unlike you, she would never hurt innocent people! But if you keep acting like what you’re doing is right, we WILL use our strength to stop you!” She declared.

Kouji could pretend, lie about a better future underneath Rocket, the fact that they are the way and speak of the evils of the league. But he didn’t want to lie, make up stories, he respected his opponent far too much to do any of that.

”They’ll have to find their way or disappear. Like we all did.” A part of it was pettiness, of wanting people to experience a life like himself, of not truly fitting in. Yet that hatred within him was nowhere near enough fuel for him anymore. He was dried out of that, hatred towards the world would never be a sufficient fuel, it burned for a most of twenty years.

”Haaah. Whatever, Absol. Kill the guys behind if you need to, Roaring Moon…Dance.” It was a dance, that of a dragon fraying its feathers; a roar and the shingle of its scales. Dragon Dance was a move known by almost all dragons at some point in their life.

A war dance, an opening act to certain brutality. Kouji’s dragon roared as it felt its fighting spirit increase even further. Absol didn’t have as easy a time, as it found itself ensnared the power of the Frenzy plant whipping away at it, it was a powerful move, a strong strike.

”Tch. No two ways, let’s do it.” Kouji took out a knife from his pocket, the one which had his mega stone placed within the sheath itself, the energy shining in the air as his Dark Type absorbed it. Unable to remove itself, it could only rely on the infinity energy that was filling it, his horn growing, mane growing, and a secondary horn to pair as it glowed even brighter before the shine disappeared and it freed itself. Quickly opting for a Psycho Cut aimed at Ogerpon.

Mega Evolution allowed Absol to free itself from its wooden prison. With its newfound power, it stood a better chance against the great Oni. However, Pon had a few more tricks up her very long sleeve. A Spiky Shield intercepted the attack, ensuring that the angelic beast would be the only one taking damage.

“If those are your orders, then there’s something wrong with whoever gave them!” Andrea continued to rebuke her opponent, her Hydreigon-shaped fists shaking. “Just disobey them! Can’t you see how pointless this whole thing is? Why are we even fighting? There are people out there doing everything in their power to stop this war, and you’re spitting on their effort!”

People like Naomi Sato, whom Andrea was letting down by partaking in the aggression. But how could she speak of peace to someone who only understood violence without learning their language? The girl deactivated her Sygna Suit, and in its place, a Z-Ring shone with exotic energies.

Absol struggled to deal with the pokemon in front of him, even with its attack it was only met by a Spiky Shield that caused the damage to rebound back on him. It was painful, as if many thorns were poking at its body. It had to figure something out, some way around this as his horn began to glow with dark intentions, a Night Slash being powered by the evil notions passing from it to his trainer but instead of heading for Ogerpon, it dashed back towards the group of trainers and civilians.

”Wrong with the orders? Are we supposed to just sit in an island, and wait for you guys to wipe us and our goals out? Most of us don’t work in the society that you all live in…” It was a group, a coalition of soldiers, of rejects, of those unwanted by society itself.

Those who rejected society in turn.

And sometimes, those such as himself who had never gotten the opportunity to partake.

”I won’t back away from those orders. Wrong or right, we’ll decide by whoever wins. You can choose to oppose us…But don’t cry at the results, I won’t. I’ll keep spitting on the idea of peace. I don’t want it.” Those were tough words for a man who found himself at the bottom of the well.

”Don’t back down, use Primitive Devouring!” A move of the highest order, a large maw formed from the very draconic energies that lurked within its bodies, a giant head that would bite down on all of its foes at the same time, one that would never let them leave.

The draconic spirit of one great maw met the draconic spirit formed many heads, a hydra for certain, a monster from myth met a monster from the past. It could only end in one way, for them to tear out at each other.

An enormous clash, even as simple bites it was an explosion of force that forced even Kouji off his feet, and rolling backwards; uprooting trees, and sending dirt flying up in thick clods. A thick yet fast rolling cloud of dust immediately followed it.

Two dragons whose hearts were tainted by darkness. Two powerful Z-Moves that crystallized the concept of ‘biting’. Their clash was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Had this not been a battle of life or death, Andrea might have enjoyed herself. Chomper had found a worthy rival from a dwindling list of candidates.

When the dust had settled, the Hydreigon looked beaten within an inch of his life, his heads reduced to the original three. Numerous deep lacerations riddled his chubby frame, bleeding something fierce. If health points were a thing, his would be at 1, clinging to consciousness through sheer force of will.

“Chomper, return!” The girl tried to withdraw her partner, but his Pokéball refused to function. “Darn it, it’s not working!” He had already been locked into this battle by the Roaring Moon’s cursed jaws. There was no escape unless one of them fell.

An even more urgent issue presented itself when the Mega Absol decided to target the gym trainers and civilians cowering in the back. “Pon, stop them!” Andrea cried out, her ogreish friend swinging her signature Ivy Cudgel at Absol’s head.

“PON!!!”

Gritting her teeth, the draconic cosplayer shot a resolute glare at Kouji. “We won’t lose to you! We won’t lose to someone who spits on the idea of peace! If winning is what it takes in order to be right, then we WILL win!” She declared in a moment of misplaced confidence.
