Nestled within the deep wood of Petalburg, the longer she spent in Hoenn, the more divergent feelings the place brought. It was the point of her arrival in Hoenn, the source of her bane, but she recalled her tearful confessional with Genny, a good and trusted friend. She remembered the blight deeper into the forest, and the first time she encountered the sprite Celebi... But she had met another one of her good friends by happenstance within the trees early in her time in the region. The good and the bad, creating some kind of precarious balance... But at least for today, the scales tipped for the good.[break][break]
Lumei sniffed the air brushing through the trees as he kept his senses sharp, keen, watching a figure moving through the tree trunks and along the forest floor. Yuina was carefully, studiously, and quietly watching a Pokémon that she had encountered a couple of days prior, a Houndoom... Marred by toxic chains. The magenta chains linked around the canine's ankles, and its fur was perhaps a bit discolored due to the influence, but compared to the onslaught of Pokémon that had attacked the region enmass under the influence of the creator of the toxic chain, it as almost as if it were just a normal Pokémon. Almost.[break][break]
The Houndoom sniffed along the ground and padded past a tree trunk, taking in the sights and smells of the surrounding forest, the chains dragging along the grass at its paws, and Yuina continued to take careful notes in a notebook as she awaited her long time friend and fellow environmentalist study.

The Houndoom was not the only thing being stalked through the trees.[break][break]

Hot, red eyes were squarely on Yuina Higashi's back. Creeping slowly, a Flareon with lavender tinted fur crept closer. The miasma poisoned pokemon licked her lips, mouth open so lilac drool could slide out. She eyed the woman as if she would be her next meal.[break][break]

A low, quick whistle would have Agni stop in her tracks. It would also alert Yuina to company.[break][break]

Tempest rubbed his nose and grinned, quietly trying to squish himself down to hide from whatever Yuina was staring at so intently. He scanned the trees and leaned over to nudge her lightly with his elbow.[break][break]

"What's got you all in a buzz?" Was said, low and slow.

Of the pair of them, Lumei was the first to become acutely aware that they were no longer alone in the wood. His ears twitched, and his fur came alight with illumina energy as he sniffed... Something even more sickly, something more poisonous than the toxic chain was very near... But it was the low whistle that caught both his attention and Yuina's.[break][break]
Yuina didn't move from where she remained though, she likely figured that it was Temp having found her, and sure enough as she took care with a couple more notes, she smiled as he nudged at her. He too crept into the quiet place she was watching from, and she could appreciate the effort that he put in to ease into what she was doing.[break][break]
"There, do you see it," Yuina returned softly, glancing through the trees to find the Houndoom padding along the grass.[break]
"I noticed it the other day, and followed it deeper into the wood," she offered, handing Temp the notebook she'd been jotting down in, detailing a couple of things she'd already noticed. Most notably that the toxic chain seemed to be a more integrated part of its body than what had occurred in the spring, and thus far, she hadn't seen any other afflicted Pokemon.

"Huh." Tempest's eyes narrowed in on the Houndoom. This wasn't such an unusual place to find one, but they were pack animals. This one was all by itself, but also... the toxic chain was the most glaringly obvious thing about it.[break][break]

Tempest glanced down at Yuina Higashi's notes. For a moment he envied how nice her writing was (compared to his, anyway) before he actually scanned the words themselves.[break][break]

"That's unusual. I haven't seen anything like this since the Prison incident." Tempest wrinkled his nose and frowned; just remembering that sucked. Absently, he rubbed over where his once-broken ribs and punctured lung had ached.[break][break]

"Does it seem as aggressive as the ones from before?" Was asked as he passed the notes back to her.

Watching carefully still, Yuina's breath caught, and her shoulders grew stiff at the mention of the prison. She was doing her best to keep that out of her mind while assessing the Houndoom, no matter how constant the reminder was. Yuina could swear she could still see tinges of magenta at the corners of her vision sometimes...[break][break]
"Don't remind me...," she returned quietly, brushing it off to the best of her ability. She swallowed, it almost tasted like peach.[break][break]
"By all accounts, it acts like a normal Houndoom, uninhibited by the chain. It doesn't seem to be influenced by anything, like the control that took over in the spring," Yuina offered, stumped really.[break][break]
"I've tried to locate its pack, to see if maybe the chain was spreading, but I couldn't find them. I wonder... if it was alienated due to it."

"It could have also been all that was left of the pack, if they were all infected." Tempest briefly thinks that there was Houndoom that attacked at one point. That whole time was fuzzy; the constant headaches he got after a while made it hard.[break][break]

"If it's not aggressive, do you think it could be captured?"[break][break]

Other pokemon with unusual energies could be captured, like Shadow and Illumina pokemon. Would this one also have unusual energy? Actually, maybe he should look into trying to track down one of these for himself. While Tempest did like canines, Yuina Higashi did have a right to this one since she had spotted it first.

Considering first that the one Houndoom had been alienated from its pack from contracting the infection had been Yuina's only thought thus far... She hadn't considered the possibility that...[break]
Would they all have died eventually to the exposure of the toxic chain? Was that its intended purpose?[break][break]
"It's hard to say... It looks incredibly healthy otherwise, usually you can see the effects of poisoning," Yuina theorized too, it didn't seem hindered or injured in the slightest, not as if it were slowly succumbing to a debilitating poison that was taking over its body.[break][break]
Temp posed the question first, one she had already been considering... She was of two minds about trying to capture the Houndoom. If it didn't want to be captured, then that was that, that was all there was to it. She wasn't going to force a Pokemon into capture, it was unecessary.[break]
But on the other hand, the toxic chain was worth studying, and understanding. Was it spreading? Was it killing the Houndoom? Could it be cured? Could an antivenom be produced? All very viable and valuable insights if she were to look into its capture...[break][break]
"I guess there's only one way to find out... I've been mulling over that the last couple of days, but in the end, this has to be studied... What if its a breakout all over again," Yuina returned, making up her mind. If nothing else, she could always release the Houndoom after it might be rehabilitated from the chain...[break][break]
With that, she drew out another Pokeball, releasing Ari the Azumarill. The water/fairy type should prove most effective against the fire/dark type.

Tempest clicked his tongue, having Agni follow after Azumarill. Even if the water type had an advantage, as with Shadows, you never really knew what was going to happen with them. It could overpower them anyway. The Flareon scented the wind, then pressed herself low to the ground and tried to circle to be downwind of the fire dog.[break][break]

"I've got your back here." Temp gave an encouraging grin to Yuina Higashi. He would wait for her signal before instructing Agni to attack.

The last thing that needed to happen was another pandemic of toxic chains overtaking the region... That was an omen Yuina never wanted to see again. So with Temp ready in wait, it was necessary to try and capture the Houndoom, at least for a little while, to make sure that they weren't looking at something spreading.[break][break]
"Ari, go," Yuina spoke then, sending the Azumarill forward, and it was at this point now that they were known to the canine. Its ears flicked at the sound, its snout raising and finding their scents. It snarled, jowls arched and... something much thicker, and darker, than slobber pooling in the corners of its mouth.[break][break]
The Azumarill lunged forward, tail coated in water, and certain that she could get in a first good hit without causing serious damage, she swung with an Aqua Tail. It struck true, hitting the canine in its side, but... It hardly seemed phased. And instead of perhaps flames licking at the side of its maw, smoke billowing in retaliation, poison oozed from its fangs.[break][break]
"That's... That's not good...," Yuina breathed, but only just before the chains that linked around the Houndoom's ankles lunged forward at its control and wrapped around Ari.[break]
"Oh! Oh no," Yuina's mouth hung agape, what had happened to this Houndoom?

Tempest watched the battle quietly for a few moments. When the attack didn't seem to do that much... he frowned. The Houndoom just seemed... strange.[break][break]

Lifting his finger to his lips, Temp let out a sharp fweet!. Agni's ears flicked up at the sound, her head whipping around to lock in on what should have been a fellow fire type. She darted forward, dark flames licking her maw. A blast of black and purple flame burst out, trying to coat the Houndoom with the Shadow Flame.[break][break]

"Something's weird about that. Could it be sort of like... Shadow Pokemon...?"
