The office is a borrowed one; Tempest didn't keep a space for himself on the sub. He still sits behind the desk in the large plush chair offered. Pushed back from the desk itself, he's spinning in circles in the chair as he looks over notes. An ink pen is sitting on his upper lip, balanced between his nose. When Adrian Malcolm walks in, he comes to a slow stop and smiles.[break][break]

"Thanks for comin'!" Squeaking back to the desk, Tempest drops the pen and only looks at it puzzled before picking it back up. All his papers are spread out quickly, then shuffled into one pile as the Beast finds what he had been looking for.[break][break]

"You used to be an Avatar, right?" Tempest uncaps the pen, smudging blue ink over his hand. The pen looks like it's been chewed to pieces. Tempest grins at the other, nodding for him to sit down. There is something sharp in his smile, but his eyes gleam as if Adrian is in on whatever joke he's about to tell. "I was hoping you could tell me about it."

That's what this was about. It'd been so long...[break][break]

Adrian hesitates at the doorway. Tempest would be able to tell he's considering walking back out. After a few painstaking moments, he resigns himself to this—at least long enough to take a seat. His eyes are suspicious and accusing, and Tempest is certain he does not entirely intend to cooperate. But there may be little pieces he would share...[break][break]

"About being an avatar?"[break][break]

Adrian's eyes insinuate they mean something more specific. There were plenty of avatars to approach for this kind of question. What they really wanted to know was a bit more specific, but he would make them pull every tooth from him.[break][break]

"It wasn't great, but I imagine everyone's mileage varies." His answer proves less than satisfying. If only he had been chosen by something fluffier, and definitely much kinder. Maybe then it would've been an experience to envy... to remember fondly.

"Empty? No." Maybe powerless, compared to then. But he wasn't missing something. Yveltal hadn't awoken much in him; it had played on his character flaws, exacerbated an already disproportionate sense of self-worth.[break][break]

"It was typical, if a privilege."[break][break]

There were strange moments—feelings that had been used to manipulate him—but they were growing pains. Eventually, everything settled into place, and nothing was so different than as he was before. Tempest shouldn't need to be told it felt powerful. Nor did he wish to share what it felt like to siphon away a living thing's essence; that was something else entirely...[break][break]

And it spoke to Yveltal's nature too bluntly.[break][break]

"You don't normally expect a bond with pokemon to be so... transactional." They were sapient things moreso than other creatures and companions, and their plans generally involved them only as a means to an end. Otherwise, they kept to themselves for centuries. He shouldn't have deluded himself into feeling special.[break][break]

Yveltal wanted to achieve something, and wielded Adrian to do it. When that failed, it returned to its devices. It wasn't unlike how some humans treated their pokemon—especially Team Rocket.[break][break]

Though Adrian previously looked to be squirming his way around certain choice words, he suddenly seemed troubled by his thoughts.[break][break]

"It wasn't a good time in my life."[break][break]

Most of his mistakes stemmed from that day.

"Most previous Avatars feel similar." It's somber. Despite the lackadaisical nature that Tempest had shown the Adrian Malcolm had come in, this was said with a graver seriousness it deserved. Leaning back in his chair, Tempest sighed and rubbed his cheek, His eyes did not leave the papers in front of him. Puzzles playing out before his eyes that the other could not see.[break][break]

"Every current Avatar I've spoken with talks about how amazing and great it is. Then every past Avatar talks about the low points. The pain and sacrifices. Some of them, you can see how it's strongly effected their mental health and personal relationships."[break][break]

Tempest clicks his tongue before finally glancing up to meet Adrian's eyes.[break][break]

"If Yveltal asked for you back, would you take it up on that offer?"

Adrian perks up, and seems like he's ready to answer—but stops short. His mouth, slightly agape, closes shut once more. His eyes tell of conflict, uncertainty; yet there smolders a bitterness.[break][break]

"...It doesn't matter," Adrian deflects.[break][break]

He doesn't turn back to Tempest, casting a dejected look to the side. Holding his breath, he unleashes it all with the built up tension he's holding. Letting it go makes it a little easier.[break][break]

"It asks much, even for all it offers..."[break][break]

By its nature, it refused second chances. Even if it afforded Adrian the opportunity, he would fail it again. He was only human after all. But it wasn't as though Adrian didn't wish, in some way, to have that assocaited feeling return to him...[break][break]

WORTHINESS...[break]PREEMINENCE...[break]ASSURANCE...

[break]

Thinking it made him feel ugly as a person, yet it was true to his feelings. It catered to that part of him that craved attention and influence. Power.[break][break]

"I'd rather feel like... I didn't need it."[break][break]

It's something that is easier said than believed.[break][break]

That he could refuse that sort of temptation...

There were things he would conceal. Tempest is met with a glowering stare that doesn't seem to budge, even as he considers what refusing to answer might entail. Insubordination, treason... He isn't sure how dissatisfied Tempest would be without an answer, or who was truly asking these questions...[break][break]

But he expected to take this to the grave.[break][break]

If Tempest wanted an idea, it was there at the beginning: Cillian brought him into their fold after he fell onto hard times, accused of certain crimes and being held prisoner until a judge could hear the case. They could extrapolate from that...[break][break]

But he wasn't interested in answering.

"Whatever it did to you clearly effected you deeply." Leaves Tempest, equally somber. It is with a marked kind of sincerity to match Adrian Malcolm's tone. Though, while Temp can see in plain view what's happened to Adrian just from this brief conversation... Temp is no marcus kotov. He could not even begin to unfurl the twine wrapped around the other's heart. [break][break]

"I don't like Legendsry pokemon." The change in subject seems sudden. Perhaps it is an olive branch given to Adrian in his own way. [break][break]

"I'm trying to learn all I can about them and the bonds they forge. That way, people who get tangled up with them won't be hurt."

Adrian didn't understand how it would help. But Tempest was free to do as they pleased, and it did no harm. He simply didn't believe it could be avoided in some way.[break][break]

"Don't you think it's somewhat inevitable?" They meant well, but their appearance often signaled difficult times. That they should seek out human intervention suggests a certain gravitas to any dilemma. It is unlikely that such involvement would ever come without its costs. Hardship was promised by dint of their re-emergence, time after time.[break][break]

Risk. An eventual parting of ways.[break][break]

"Kill them." It's simple. It's easy. If there were no Legendary pokemon around, then the hardships they caused would no longer exist. Legendary pokemon were in a constant push and pull struggle to balance the other out. But if they were all dead, the scales would be unweighted.[break][break]

"But I don't have the means for that, yet. I think I have the means to block Avatarships entirely, though."[break][break]

It would need to be in the name of Rocket, at first, of course. But after they reigned with an iron grip over Hoenn, there would be no need for Avatars any longer. They would be picked off one by one and returned to the realms of normal men. Only the most loyal could keep those forged bonds.

Adrian Malcolm was 100% right. There was something very wrong with Tempest Quinn. Adrian was just one of the very few who had sniffed that fact out. Usually people didn't think too much of him. Just a good fighter, just a loyal Rocket, just this and that and...[break][break]

But, no, you needed to be somewhat deranged to be in the position he was in. Something had to be wrong with you to become the type of person that Tempest had become.[break][break]

Still, at the moment, Tempest just offers Adrian another, slightly forced, smile before shaking his head 'no'. It's not unkind or awkward; perhaps more like trying to cheer up someone who is suffering. It's awkward in it's kindness. Adrian, though, would now have the special privilege of seeing how thinly that mask was slipped over real skin. Uncanny valley.[break][break]

"Not for now. I may ask for you at a later date." Tempest starts to put away his papers again, shuffle them back into some semblance of order. "You're free to leave." It's tacked on at the end, an afterthought.
