Yawning, Gunner fished out the spare key to Mila's apartment. Ever since her injury in March, he'd kept it in his possession so he could drop by at any time. At first, it was to take care of her while she recovered, but even when she started walking on her own again, he saw no reason to stop dropping by. [break][break]

They had fallen into a steady, comfortable routine, spending several days of the week together and the rest of it apart to focus on their careers. [break][break]

That morning, though, Gunner's only intention was to check on her before crashing on her bed for a much-needed nap. He'd just pulled an all-nighter emergency response to the terrorist attack on PENELOPE LIVY's conference in Slateport City, only returning to Rustboro when he could no longer resist the demands of his fatigued body to rest. [break][break]

"I'm back," he mumbled as he shuffled into the apartment. Laudine, his Umbreon, trotted ahead while he paused to remove his jacket and shoes. [break][break]

The previous day's toll on his body was obvious in the way he carried himself and in the sluggishness of his movements. A few superficial cuts marked his face, and his muscles ached from being thrown across the conference's stage.

Mila liked to live in the moment.

[break][break] She was always moving forward, ahead, running away from whatever demons threatened to drag her back down into the endless, black current of her thoughts. It was why she was always in denial about everything in her life that was difficult — her past, her relationship with Gunner Graves, the death of her brother @lykos — because none of it would matter if she could just keep on moving forward. But time was a devil, and somehow always — always found a way to sink it's claws in. Dragging her back to the very thing that she thought she'd long since moved from.

[break][break] When Gunner Graves enters her apartment, he'll find it exactly as he left it. Clothes haphazardly displayed all over the living space - a sweater here, an undergarment there. Self-made lighting fixture installed into the wall, ones that she'd bought from local thrift stores, that flickered briefly as soon as he switched the lights on. Shoes discarded by the door on a rack that - too - was only half-finished.

[break][break] But instead of the normal routine of Mila clinging to him with messy painter-fingers, or a half-finished piece of fabric; instead of the friendly nudge of Vincenzo's cold nose against his hip; instead of the dazzling gleam of her Hatterene as it prepared psychially prepared dinner for them both —

[break][break] It was silent. An eery sort of silence that would note that something was wrong. That someone had broken in. That Mila was - once again - injured.

[break][break] But none of that was true.

[break][break] But something was indeed wrong.

[break][break] Mila stood in front of the TV in the same way that she had an hour ago, when PENELOPE LIVY's STATE OF THE UNION had first aired.

[break][break] When she'd seen Gunner Graves's face on live television, fighting the very demons that she'd spent a lifetime trying to avoid.

[break][break] Gunner announced his entrance, but Mila didn't move. She couldn't move.

Gunner had half-expected Mila to still be in bed, but the drone of the television told him otherwise. A second later, he registered the slender frame of his lover standing, unmoving, in the living room. [break][break]

Staring at news reporters discussing the previous afternoon's attack on the Slateport conference. [break][break]

Oh fuck, Gunner thought, alarm flaring inside him. Crossing the room to reach Mila's side, he placed a gentle hand on her shoulder to get her attention. "Hey. Mila. I'm home," he repeated softly. "Are you okay? Have you had breakfast yet?" [break][break]

Blue eyes flickered to the TV, where reporters volleyed speculations back and forth about the extent of Team Rocket's actual involvement. Irritation chased Gunner's earlier shock, and he twisted to scan the room for the remote control.

Gunner flinched at Mila's sudden outburst, but her shouts filling the room was better than the dreadful, awful silence from a moment ago. In a way, he felt relief. He could handle her screaming. [break][break]

"Look, I'm sorry," he said, both hands raised as if in surrender, too exhausted to fight her. "I told you I was working at a conference yesterday. It was broadcasted live. No one expected Team Rocket to attack." [break][break]

Least of all him, who had been in charge of security that day. The gut punch that all his preparations for weeks had been for naught still haunted him at every turn. [break][break]

Lowering his hands, Gunner touched Mila's wrist that was closer to him. "But I'm here now. I'm fine. See?" [break][break]

He invited her to reciprocate the touch, to confirm that he was solid and whole in front of her. Somehow, instinct told him that beneath her anger was a distinct and familiar fear.

[break][break] It's the magic word. The one that always had been successful in lowering her defenses, but also the one that Gunner Graves had never wanted to give. But that was before, and this is now.

[break][break] Her hand lowers - just slightly - as she stares at him. But try as she might, all she can see the chaos that's on the television, crackling still like background noise in her ears that she can't quite be rid of.

[break][break] "You were working at a conference?"

[break][break] It occurs to her that she'd never really asked him what he did. Not really. Mostly because she had never wanted to know, but also because he hadn't ever wanted to provide it to her. Their relationship was one built on half-truths and lies, and it never felt like she'd deserved to know.

[break][break] But that was then. This was now. And —

[break][break] "Are you?" she said, glancing up at him, at the depths of his very-blue eyes. Her bottom lip trembled. "I saw them on the TV, Gunner. Nothing about that looked fine."

[break][break] Only because she knows that if he so much as touches her, she'll fall aprt.

Mila withdrew her wrist from Gunner's reach. He froze at once, understanding the meaning of that silent gesture. She was denying him the option to simply dismiss what had happened as something outside her concern. [break][break]

Worry gave way to irritation. With a heavy sigh of exasperation, he dropped onto the couch. [break][break]

"I don't want to fight you right now, Mila," he said hotly, feeling the threads of his self-control snapping like wire. "I've pulled a fucking all-nighter doing damage control and the last thing I need right now is for you to scream at me." [break][break]

Closing his eyes, Gunner let his head fall back against the couch and rubbed his forehead with a hand. Laudine hopped onto the cushions beside him, curling up and resting her head on his lap.

Lately, ever since the attack in Area Zero, she'd felt more anxiety than was usual at the prospect of Team Rocket lurking around the corner. Especially with the ambiguous other entity that Gunner Graves had mentioned in the hospital room, just shortly after her stay there.

[break][break] The designer had always known that Gunner had been involved in some type of super-secret, government work. But she'd figured that it had to do more with having high-profile clientele, or maybe even had to do with that law degree that he could've had.

[break][break] If she'd known that he was so involved in Rocket, she would've never —

Gunner's eyes flew open as he lifted his head to regard the woman standing before him with fists clenched. "I work for the Hoenn Bureau of Intelligence and Counterterrorism, Mila," he said, enunciating every word to emphasize their meaning. "What do you think I do? I protect the region." [break][break]

It was a vague enough answer, one that drew no conclusions and, therefore, allowed the imagination to run wild with possibility. And Mila had such an active imagination. To head off any panic, he added: [break][break]

"I was at the conference as head of security, and what happened was a huge security breach. That's what I mean by 'damage control'." [break][break]

The reminder of his wretched night redirected his frustration away from her, and Gunner leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees and head in his hands. Not moving, Laudine purred in an attempt to soothe her master.

At Mila's accusation, Gunner jerked his head up. Lack of sleep made his short temper even shorter, and he opened his mouth to snap back, only to catch sight of the tears she swiped away with haste. He saw the tumult of emotions there; where once he would have noticed only her anger and hatred, now he saw the hurt and concern for his well-being, too. [break][break]

Were there other people who could have taken his place? Yes, without a doubt. But being tasked with such responsibility and trust was an honor; it meant he had been PENELOPE LIVY's top choice. [break][break]

Only a coward who feared his own incompetence would have refused. [break][break]

"I'm glad it was me," he said, the conviction in his voice softened by his ragged appearance. "There could've been more civilian deaths if I hadn't been there. It pains me enough that we lost lives at all." [break][break]

Bitterness stole into his expression as he exhaled a heavy sigh. "I don't expect you to understand, but I chose this job because it gives me purpose. If you can't deal with that…" He shrugged. "I'll go home, then."

"Talk about what, Mila?" Gunner exploded, finally at the end of his patience with her. He stood, jostling his Umbreon from his lap, and stomped toward the window. Hands on his hips, he glared out at the Rustboro skyline, trying not to seethe. [break][break]

"We are talking! I'm telling you my reasons and you aren't paying attention! No—you are, but you just don't care what I say, do you?" The bitterness in his face had traveled into his throat and now underscored his words. [break][break]

He whirled around to glare at her. "Maybe you don't give a shit about other people or what goes on in this goddamned region, but I do! And if you can't respect that—can't respect me—then what the fuck am I doing here? Huh? Tell me." [break][break]

Blue eyes narrowed as they locked with her amaranth ones. "You want to talk, so talk already."

By that point, Gunner recognized when Mila spoke from a tidal surge of emotion, not logic. She was wrong, of course; plenty of people cared whether he lived or died. GIDEON GRAVES. paxton concordas. Even PENELOPE LIVY. But Gunner knew better than to call Mila out, so instead, he focused on her other words. [break][break]

"Of course I care about you!" he shouted, not bothering to jerk away from her grasp of his shoulder. In turn, he grabbed her upper arms, tight enough to make her understand how serious he was, but not enough to hurt her. [break][break]

"Everything I'm doing now is because I care about you! You hate and fear Team Rocket, and I'm doing everything in my power to drive them out of Hoenn! More than anything, I want to make a world where you can be happy and carefree and not have nightmares anymore." [break][break]

He sighed, relenting a little at last. In a more subdued, tired tone, he said, "If I die while making that reality come true, it will be worth it. You'll be free."
