The two sit in the sheriff's garage, where the sound of Dewford's sheriff tinkering with his truck rang out like the peals of a bell. Iron and steel clanked together in harmony.

The sounds of automotive repairs was undercut by a small CRTV in the corner with an old game console hooked up. In front of it was Dewford's Judas, Howard Slayte. Long before he betrayed the island, he meandered at the sheriff's place occasionally to poke around or slack off.

He was never sure how much Navy appreciated his company. The admin was no kyle lopez, after all.

"Stupid fucking Varooms...!" Howard muttered to himself before groaning as he got hit with another Squirtle Shell, sending him from first place to sixth. "Fuck...!"

Shirley sat dozing nearby, her eye barely opening to regard the archaeologist, before turning to the sheriff. She snorted before going back to sleep.

This old console has seen a lot of battering over the years. Navy can’t even remember where he first found the thing, probably some garage sale in the suburbs. All he knows is that Gabe and Kyle played the hell out of it, occasionally dragging him along on the misadventures that followed.[break][break]
Plastered on the screen are colorful little characters, each striving to be the winner who takes it all. Navy, who cares too much about these sorts of details, wonders why they are racing. As far as he can tell, the characters all met up one day and decided to get on varooms for the hell of it. He guesses they don’t need a deeper reason than that, just like he doesn’t need a deeper reason to fight.[break][break]
He sucks at this game. He’s in third place by dumb luck and another of their co-player’s shells. When the Squirtle blasts Howard, Hattori chuckles. Though the shinobi’s leal lord is unskilled at best, the small frog makes up for it. He zooms into second place – not first, but second. Hattori is very good at hovering there, aware of the predator ready to hunt him down.[break][break]
“I dunno how the hell you guys can play this shit.” Navy says in a tone caught between a grumble and a laugh. “These controls suck.”

"This game is older than the average challenger at your gym, man." Howard sucked air in through his teeth as Hattori sniped him. The frog was an excellent marksfrog, and a Water Shuriken was indistinguishable from a Squirtle Shell. "It's a skill issue."

The archaeologist hissed slightly as Hattori passed him. The only scrap of pride he held was that he could beat Navy. For a warrior, the sheriff wasn't particularly skilled with controllers.

"These things were made for your generation, man. What gives?" Howard's eye narrowed as he rolled a Wishing Star from a mystery box. "I thought that Kyle would've rubbed off on you."

Varoom Kart's plot was a true mystery. Eternatus would wake before they cracked the game's story.

Kyle had been better at games, Kyle had been the League's shining star, and Kyle had stolen the hearts of many a young trainer who wandered the region.

And Kyle Lopez died.

It's a sobering thought, not fit for a game as innocent as this. It was meant to bring joy to kids and bring people closer together, although the conflict within was simulated. What a curious experience.

"I had a couple friends I played this game with, back in Rustboro." Howard admitted as used his Wishing Star. His Varoom turned into a vibrant rainbow of colors, rapidly accelerating towards Hattori. "Back of the jewelry shop had an outlet and an old TV. Brought a lot of people together."

Varoom Kart alone could not keep people together.

"Think he's still better than you?"

It all amounts up to ash in their hands. Few get to cheat the reaper. In this moment where he should be focused, all he can focus on is his own heartbeat and the unseen scar left on its surface.[break][break]
“You don’t talk ‘bout your childhood a lot. You didn’t fall in with Rocket back then.” A statement, not a question. “Their OGs are something else.”

Middle class, slightly richer than most in the area. In a world where the average Rocket was some underpaid gangster looking to find a place in the world, the archaeologist was an exception. The pinnacle of Rocket consisted of the affluent, the well-born, and the well-connected.

There were exceptions. There were always exceptions, but Howard had juggled both sides of wealth as he took his seat at Admin Fox.

"It just feels unfair to complain about my life when yours was worse. Especially with you and Gabe getting fucked over by Monroe's policies." Back to square one. Final lap. Hattori's reign over first place was going to come to an end sooner or later. He understood why Cillian hated this fucking frog. "Guess I never felt like it was fair for me to talk about my life when everyone else was miserable."

Both the good sides and the bad.

"Mmm."

The words came out a halfhearted shrug. The same that any kid with a talent for academia might react when told that his future was bright and that he was talented. It's something Howard has heard a thousand times from all of his friends and family as he aged, before their approving gleams had turned into disappointed scowls.

The same scowl that emerged when a young flower withered and died too quickly, its potential all but spent.

"I wanted to prove that I could do it myself, y'know? I paid what I could, took loans where I couldn't. It doesn't seem fair to use an advantage like that. I wanted to be accepted because I was adept, right? Especially when my parents wanted me to study something more productive."

It had been cute when he had liked old bones and dinosaurs as a kid. Their approval had waned as he had aged, though. He could see it in their eyes.

"So I took loans. Struggled to pay them back. Lotta years of schooling only to lose all my job opportunities to people with the very connections I denied myself. People like Remiel." A shell hit him. The admin didn't turn from the screen as he spilled his life's story. "That's it, really."

"I became Rocket because I was too stubborn to ask for help."

That’s why my life went the way it did.” He doesn’t turn from the screen either, not as Hattori passes them and wins it all, not as he keeps talking and the next race starts on and on and on like the march of this long war that divides them.[break][break]
“Ollie tried to get me into the rangers for years after my folks died. Pretty much as soon as I turned eighteen.” He likes ollie morales. Always has. Always will. A good man whose homeland is wrapped in chains of tyranny, which is not peace. “Probably would’ve had a better life if I’d just said yes. Elite Ranger Navidson has a nice ring to it. But nah. Too dirty. I’m not a poster child.” Even if, at that moment, his smiling, saluting, cowboy hat wearing visage adorns recruitment posters for the League.[break][break]
“Whatever goon on Monroe’s administration said crime doesn’t pay sure don’t know what he’s talkin’ ‘bout. Crime and stuff right near it paid dividends compared to honest work.” At last, he turns. “You got there in the end though. I think the stuff you write’ll have you be remembered forever.”

"Thanks, man." Howard's voice was intent as he meandered through the next race. "It just feels like I've lost a lot along the way."

How many artifacts had he sold in order to fund his search? How much of the past was donated to the wealthy elite to be coveted instead of studied? He had preserved much, and he would preserve so much more, but he couldn't help but suspect that somewhere along the way, his ideals had been compromised.

He turned to face the sheriff. Weary eyes. A moment of peace in an endless war. This fight with Eternatus would leave them both dead. Perhaps the world would be better for it.

"If it's any consolation, you'd suck as a ranger because you wouldn't have my hat." Hattori wins again. The frog is committed, he'll give them that. As Elite Four during one of the biggest wars in recorded history? I suspect you'll fit snugly in the pages alongside the greats."

He rose, grunting and popping his back.

"Am I still swinging by for dinner? Please tell me you're not cooking."
