The Illuminated sight draws Nenet up short - of all the things lurking in the shadows, Pokemon picked over like insects by a curious hand was hardly on her list of possibilities. Regardless, the fact remained that something had mutilated and haphazardly offered an alternative to the damage done.

Her gaze cuts askance sharply to Fern and their Tapu Koko. If this was Tapu Lele's fault, would the shiny Tapu Koko join or have thoughts of its own to cause such harm?

"We should draw one closer," she finally says, her eyes shifting from Fern to the scales littering the ground. Tipping her chin towards one of the scales, Nenet orders her Clefable to use Gravity one one of the nearby malnourished Pokemon.

Her attention then shifts down to the scales, and after a moment, she pulls out a small field kit and withdraws a pair of tweezers. "One of you," she murmurs for Fern and Ameena, "we can either retrieve one of those scales with these-" here she holds up the tweezers, "or I have some gloves. I'm not keen on touching something I don't know, however."

Nenet looks to the other scientist to confer how to proceed with their data collection. Zev she trusts to keep any potential dangers away while they confer.

Something hot twists in her gut at the sight, but no urge to vomit follows. She's seen plenty of horrors long before her days in Hoenn. Still, every monstrous discovery in Hoenn is a different beast than the evil in the rest of the world. She sighs as the (tortured?) pokemon crawl closer. She'll be dreaming about this for months to come. Nothing can be done about it now, but she wishes, not for the first time, that she could experience dreamless sleep. [break][break]

But here and now, she is a guest on this excursion, and she can't be dead weight. "If we are concerned about infection, might it be safer still to use psychic abilities instead?" She doesn't suspect there'll be any interesting energy readings on the scales - not anything that will be masked by the use of psychic abilities, anyhow. [break][break]

"The scales might be a natural byproduct of whatever these pokemon have been through, or the scales could be an afterthought, or triage." The pokemon can move with these scales that are littered through the area, but she can't decide on what theory to posit first. Intentional or unintentional, those scales...[break][break]

Gardevoir follows Ameena's line of thought and uses psychic to tug on a scale for their data collection.[break][break]

The chandelure flares with the light of its spotlight.[break][break]

Fern's eager curiosity quickly morphs into a grimace as the bright halo sweeps over and pins the haggard, mangled creatures.[break][break]

Somewhere, in the depths of their chest, they might have registered a certain sense of pity. They certainly felt bad for whatever it was these pokemon had been subjected to. But they are here for a specific task and so they would be required to plumb much deeper to find that bleeding heart quality they have long desensitized.[break][break]

"Well, that isn't something you see every day," Fern muttered as their narrowed eyes raked over each mutilated pokemon in turn. Hovering above them, Tapu Koko conducts its own observations, keenly fixated on the scales that cobble together limbs and appendages.[break][break]

They lack a scientist's discernment, and so they start forward with little inhibition, intent on scooping some of the littered scales up. But Neffatari Nzingha's words halt them in place, and they turn wide eyes on her. Then their stare drifts down to the tweezers she produces. They hum, somehow both in consideration and disappointment. "I suppose..." Reaching into their coat pocket, Fern produces a pair of leather gloves. "But there's a thrill in handling the unknown, though?" Their smile fixes on her/[break][break]

And they absolutely do not expect her to share the sentiment.[break][break]

Open palms eagerly await the scale dropped there. They turn it over in their hands and attempt to make out any particular distinction. Again, without any sense of caution to either Nenet or ameena abadi's concerns, Fern inches toward the hobbled pokemon - the grumpig in particular. "I don't suppose they're well enough to do much of anything at all," they remark, but they hold out the loose scale to compare it to one still embedded along its hide. "Do you suppose whatever did this was breaking, or repairing?"[break][break]

Fern frowns. Tapu Lele could be a bit vindictive, no? Fickle, like the rest of the guardians. Maybe it had committed both acts. The snap of temper, followed by an act of contrition? It's all speculative, of course. They won't know until they actually find it.[break][break]

For a moment, their attention shifts to Zev Harcourt. "What do you make of this?" Does Necrozma recognize the handiwork, perhaps?[break][break]

Holding the scale aloft, they offer it to their patron. "Look familiar?" they ask Tapu Koko, who snatches the piece up with obvious greed. It flits about, and there's something frenzied in its movements. Not unlike when they encountered Elisabeth Fiorelli and Hoenn's Tapu Fini, or either of their encounters with the other Tapu Koko.[break][break]

There is no insight it imparts, however. Necrozma's plaintive summons ring in the back of Fern's mind though the beacon and its cries have long diminished. They must be of the same mind with their patron, though, because Tapu Koko sets forth a signal of its own - furiously calling to its kin. Still holding the scale, it pulls down a column of THUNDER from the sky through the rain. It strikes the ground and flares along the remnants of the ELECTRIC TERRAIN.

The miserable collection of amputated Pokémon was the last thing Zev expected to see out there in that hostile place. He swept a curious gaze over them, noting with fascination how the cuts appeared surgical, the limbs sheared off with razor precision. [break][break]

Whatever had done this was a creature after his own cold heart. [break][break]

While Nenet and Ameena carefully collected the scales for future studies, Zev glanced at Fern when the admin asked for his opinion. Zev crouched near the disfigured Drapion for a closer look at the scales on its body, as well as those littering the ground nearby. [break][break]

Where had he seen something like these before? [break][break]

A recent memory surfaced to the fore of his mind: John Sullivan, dressed in a green prison uniform, flinging similar objects at people and Pokémon alike amidst the chaos of a violent escape. [break][break]

"It's from one of the Tapus," Zev said with certainty. It never occurred to him that he could be incorrect. "These scales remind me of Sullivan's power, but his are meant for healing, not harm." [break][break]

Blue eyes regarded the Drapion with clinical detachment. It uttered a plaintive cry at him, which did nothing to garner any empathy from him. [break][break]

"These Pokémon haven't eaten in a while," he said, standing and turning his back on the insect. “I don't think Tapu Lele is near."

"If you'd prefer," Nenet answers, her gaze casting askance to Ameena. "I would rather not take chances," she offers with a wry smile. That smile swiftly disappears as she casts Fern a rather unimpressed look at their suggestion of trying the unknown.

She would rather keep infections or accidents of any sort to a minimum.
[break][break]
Nonetheless, she says to Fern's musings, "It does look a bit like repairing now that you've said it." Still, she does not handle the scales with her bare hands, instead she uses the tweezers to pick up a littered scale and bring it to eye level. Turning it this way and that, she finds nothing of overt interest.

What an odd specimen.

"Keeping things alive can cause plenty of harm," she murmurs more to herself than Zev at the man's words. She hums softly and then finally glances towards her husband, curiosity lighting her eyes as she asks, "You would be able to feel the Tapu's presence?"

Ameena can appreciate Fern's thrill at the unknown. Discovery lied in the abyss of ignorance, so she was pleased to see the unusual scales just as much as she was cautious of touching them. Nenet had the right idea, and so Ameena only investigated one while inside the hold of Gardevoir's psychic. Both her and Nenet were utterly human. Caution would go a long way for them, while the other two might shrug off the damage or ire of a Tapu. [break][break]

"I cannot tell if the scales that litter the environment have stopped serving their purpose, like they contain energy that eventually drains into the pokemon and falls off." Or maybe the scales were intended as permanent fixtures on these pokemon and fell off from the naturally abrading environment and/or the hobbling, dragging movement of the hindered pokemon. [break][break]

Whatever the case, she couldn't imagine a Tapu needed to limit the movement of these pokemon. It ought to be strong enough to fend for itself should these pokemon intend to harm it. "Maybe this Tapu sought to make these pokemon in its image, or in some form of its desires. It is improbable that a Tapu needed to weaken local pokemon, given its strength." Or could these have been damaged pokemon in the first place that were healed by a Tapu's inexperienced attempt? [break][break]

They didn't have enough information to guess motive. Was the deity here callous and powerful or well-intentioned and imperfect?

Fern sighs as they watch Tapu Koko continue to dart about, charged by the electricity that crackles along the earth below. It keeps a tight hold on the scale, as though it is as lovely as any gem or shiny thing that it has pilfered from Fern's belongings.[break][break]

Idly, they listen to the discussion held between the scientists as they stoop to gather another scale up in their hands. "So you think it has abandoned these Pokemon, then?" Fern asks Zev Harcourt as they look up at him from where they are crouched. They are all in poor shape, it's true, but if it meant to heal similarly to the one that resided in Hoenn... well, then that would make little sense.[break][break]

Unless its benevolence was a one time deal. It has imparted the amalgamation of its handiwork, and left them to fend for themselves. "I'm inclined to agree, though. If it was watching, I would assume that it would come to necrozma's call." They hum in thought, eyes flitting up to Tapu Koko again, "or maybe felt as though its territory was being encroached upon by another Tapu."[break][break]

Kin or not, they are not certain that the Tapus are necessarily warm to one another.[break][break]

But then again, they have not met with one of the same maker yet.[break][break]

"That would certainly be an interesting turn," they say of Neffatari Nzingha's question. "Are you able to sense Tapu Koko?" Granted, the guardian makes itself known, blatantly so, in most circumstances, proud as it is.[break][break]

Fern pushes themself back up, and while doing so, hoists the grumpig up as well. It gives no protest - too weak to defend itself or attempt to flee. They hold it out toward ameena abadi, aloft alongside the scale encased in psychical energy. "Do you see any differences with one still on a, uh...specimen?" They don't look terribly different to Fern, but these are not the sorts of details they are clever about.[break][break]

The idea comes to them at the last moment, standing there with a withered grumpig between their hands. They make a swift heel turn and raise it higher, toward Tapu Koko. Eyes bright with what they perceive as ingenuity.[break][break]

"But whether it was an attempt to heal, or to build living effigies of itself..." They give the pig a little wiggle as it dangles in the air, which earns an uncertain squeal. The sound draws Tapu Koko again, who watches curiously - head canting to one side sharply. "...it probably wouldn't take too kindly to having its handiwork desecrated, no?"[break][break]

They do not flinch as the flaring glow of an ELECTRO BALL is hurled down from their patron.

WHEN THE GRUMPIG SQUEALS, a shrill siren rings across the rocky realm. A pink-haired maiden soars through the dusty zephyr in mourning blacks. She does not arrive in time to stop the ELECTRO BALL—but it is clear that she could have intervened from afar should she have desired. Curiously, like a mantis surveying its prey or a Mossdeep astronomer Neffatari Nzingha has seen scrying the stars, the ✨ TAPU LELE observes how the electricity surges through the pig. How it dismantles the rest of its crystalline pegleg and tears off its already frail tail.

The GRUMPIG lands on the rocky floor and gasps in pain. Quickly, the ✨ TAPU LELE rushes to the pig's side. In a maternal turn, the sprite raises its stubby hands; black scales, similar if not identical to Zev Harcourt's necronium metals, flurry outward and reform a leg... and then a tail. Perhaps, ameena abadi is correct. In her image, she recreates the Pokemon... as best as she can. As best as she can before the Pokemon dies.
