Andrea looked like a ghost stuck in purgatory. Refusing to see anyone for several days, or even leave her room except for the occasional soul-searching trip to Meteor Falls, her only company in her self-imposed solitude had been her adopted, reptilian son.

There she sat, on top of a bed shaped like a Slaking, surrounded by Pokémon plushies, action figures and other memorabilia, sulking until the word ‘sulk’ had lost all meaning. A half-eaten cake sat at the bedside table.

“Coco?” Crooned the little red crocodile, worriedly looking up at his human mother.

“Uncle Chomper’s not coming back, Jalapeño…” The downtrodden woman muttered, staring vacantly at a wall. “Stop asking me where he is…” She hugged her legs and quietly sobbed into her knees.

It’s a misty day, far mistier than it has any right to be in a climate like this. Hoenn is not known for its misty moors. Such climes belong in Galar, land of antiquity and ancient mystery.[break][break]
Yet here it sits, clinging across Andrea’s family ranch. That is not the only sudden bout of strangeness to enter the grieving dragon maiden’s life. A blue light glows at her window, accompanied by the sound of a bird chirping. The lights take the shape of feathers, and two bright blue eyes peering in quizzically.[break][break]
“Um, ‘scuse me?” A voice calls from behind the chirp. Andrea has heard the voice, but it has never sounded like this. Usually it is confident, in his element, warm. The voice calls out with uncertainty. “Is this the Vaneau ranch?”

At the sound of chirping, the grieving girl lifted her face to see a pair of sapphire orbs staring back at her. This unexpected visitor had an oddly familiar-sounding voice.

“N-Navy?!” The young woman frantically rolled out of bed, ran up to the window, and opened it. “What happened to you?! When did you turn into a Skarmory?!”

There was probably a more logical explanation, but Andrea was too flabbergasted and too sleep-deprived to think straight at the moment.

If Pokemon had any real language to speak of, the Skarmory’s chirps would sound one word over and over and over again.[break]
Friend! Friend! Friend! The little one cannot decide which one he likes more, Andrea or Jalapeño. Eventually, he settles on the dragon maiden’s shoulder, nuzzling the grieving girl’s cheeks. So young is the Skarmory that he can sit there comfortably, his blue light rolling over her like a warm breeze.[break][break]
“Uh, I ain’t a Skarmory.” A voice calls out awkwardly from the mist. Navy steps into view, looking bashful and more than a little tired. “You read about what happened in Dewford back in May, yeah? With Regice? This is one of the things I’ve learned to do since then. My body’s sleepin’ in Ever Grande and sometimes I accidentally…” Navy tries to think of how best to express this.[break][break]
“…sleepwalk.” A small pause, before he continues. “Can’t really control where I go sometimes, but the little one’s almost always there. His name’s Tiny. I’m sorry I haven’t been by to check in on Jalapeño and you, Andrea. I got really injured in Sootopolis.”

“Eep!” The cosplayer yelped in surprise when the illuminated bird perched on her shoulder. Because of the mist obscuring her vision, she hadn’t realized how small it was. Could Skarmory even get that small? She was no professor, so she wouldn’t know.

An ephemeral projection of Navy stepped out of the mist, explaining the situation and how he had gotten that strange power. “So… you’ve become an avatar? Of who?” Andrea put two and two together. To her knowledge, no human could become a wizard overnight without a legendary’s patronage.

“Nice to meet you, Tiny. Are you looking after your papa?” The young woman raised an index finger, giving neck scritches to the Skarmory chick. No wonder he was so friendly towards her; he was just a baby!

What the Elite Four member revealed next caused her to stop spoiling the baby bird, worry suddenly plastered over her countenance. “You got injured?! How? I mean, I read the news, but… What actually happened over there?” The girl inquired.

“Her name’s Zacian. Surprised you haven’t heard ‘bout it. It was all over the papers back in May.” A notion which embarrasses him, judging by how he scratches at the back of his neck and looks away. He Navy steels himself soon enough and returns his gaze back to Andrea.[break][break]
“It got bad. Would’ve been a whole lot worse if Freya and Walsh hadn’t agreed to a ceasefire. Kyogre went crazy near Mossdeep. Dunno why it went crazy, but everyone scrambled. It rammed into Sootopolis. Busted open the basin. Can’t really say too much more, but…”[break][break]
Arceus, what a mess. He thinks, weary to his bones.[break][break]
“Rocket has a Calyrex like the one in Ever Grande. I think it’s the one that—” A pause, placed there by an epiphany. “You weren’t a part of that whole mess at the ancient tomb, were you? Arceus, it feels complicated to explain.” Another moment is taken to consider something, before he motions towards her house.[break][break]
“Can I come in? It’s cold out here.”[break][break]
Whether or not Andrea found the idea agreeable, it registered as a swell idea in Tiny’s tiny mind. He chirped, wanting Navy closer so all of his favorite people would be close by.

Zacian, Calyrex. Two Pokémon with an apparent connection to ancient Galar, which held a special place in the sheriff’s heart. Long after he had said his goodbyes, it kept coming back to haunt him, or to bless him.

The account of Kyogre going berserk was eerily reminiscent of another legendary-related incident earlier this year, which had cost the Champion’s life.

“First Groudon, and now Kyogre. Why are the super-ancient Pokémon turning against us?” Andrea mused, horrified after hearing what had transpired in the crater city. “What about Lord Rayquaza? Why couldn’t he stop Kyogre before it reached Sootopolis?”

At Navy’s request to come in, the girl nodded, opening the window wider so that he could fit through. Did she need to? Couldn’t he just phase through the wall? Oh well.

“So Elise Calcifet’s not the only one with a Calyrex, huh?” The young PokéManiac continued. “I do remember her saying that Charles was just a shard of the real Calyrex. Maybe Team Rocket got their hands on another shard?” She theorized.

A quirk of the eyebrows was given at Lord Rayquaza, but he says nothing to that immediately. Instead, he climbs in through the window. Peeking over his shoulder, he expects to see Chomper rush forward to protect his human sister’s virtue. It is, after all, too late for grown men to be climbing through a woman’s window.[break][break]
But Chomper never comes. He’ll never fly to her window again. The green dragon is just another casualty of this war, forgotten the way Roland, Kiryu, Molly, and so many other Pokemon will be forgotten. Navy steps inside, feeling the windowsill under him, glances about the room, and has a seat. Only now does Tiny decide to return to him, resting in his lap.[break][break]
“Don’t think it’s a shard, the one Rocket has. It’s the real Charles’s twin. Well, that’s my guess, anyway. They’re equal and opposite.” It makes his head hurt just trying to explain it. He’s not a scientist.[break][break]
“And you wanna know why Rayquaza didn’t stop Kyogre? ‘Cause it was the League’s plan to let it ram into Sootopolis.” Disgust creeps into his voice. “And my coworkers will tell themselves the innocent folk who drowned had every chance in the world to leave before the fighting started.” His eyes find hers and he looks tired. “They don’t get there’s people who love their town, no matter what’s coming for it.”

“Equal and opposite, huh?” The young woman parroted, pondering what the opposite of a noble Calyrex would be. For some reason, she pictured an evil Calyrex wearing a leather jacket and smoking a cigarette.

Things took a turn for the less humorous when the Elite Four Member disclosed the League’s true intentions, eliciting an equally tired glance from the Minor Gym Leader. “Why am I not surprised? It’s like everything is allowed for you as long as it helps you win.” She sneered in bitter indignation.

“Was letting Team Rocket take Petalburg also part of the plan?” Andrea continued, clenching her fist. “Who decided that Sootopolis and Mossdeep were more worthy? Who decided that Chomper should--” She choked on her words, drowning out a sob, while Jalapeño looked down with a saddened expression.

“I’m—” Realization dawns at her words, at how the words won’t come out. Andrea has lost someone that no League paycheck can replace. A far more callous man would say they have all lost something, and Navy would punch that callous man in the face.[break][break]
“Andrea, I’m sorry. Real sorry.” His eyes fall. Were it not for Tiny picking at his ear, he might lose himself in his own thoughts.[break][break]
“I should’ve been at Petalburg.” He admits, as if he alone could make a difference. “My brother died when Rocket took Sootopolis last time. Didn’t want another kid to die for that city. I…” What truth can he tell her that will make it all okay?[break][break]
“I don’t know what to say, Andrea.”

The grieving girl solemnly shook her head at Navy’s lamentations. “I shouldn’t have been at Petalburg. You know why I was there?” She opened a drawer, pulling out a crumpled piece of paper, which she unfurled and held up in front of him.

It was one of the war draft posters with all the fear-mongering, manipulation tactics and propaganda those entailed.

“Because I was told I was a bad person if I didn’t fight against Rocket! Because I was told Rocket would take away our Pokémon! Well, guess what… THEY TOOK THEM ANYWAY!” Andrea snarled, spewing a weaker Fire Blast out of her mouth that burned the poster to ashes. That Fuecoco onesie she wore was not just for show.

“I’m sorry about your brother, by the way…” She added in a less accusatory tone. In spite of everything, she could not blame Navy for what had happened. Not when he, too, knew first-hand the pain of losing a loved one.

Just how many enemies had FERNANDO SILPH made with his point? It was meant for the League, that much he’ll give Fernando. Andrea was affiliated with the League by the barest fraction of a thread. Minor League gym leaders hadn’t even been cleared to participate in Gym Jam. These posters spurred her to fight, accused her of sitting on the sidelines…[break][break]
Fernando was right, of course. That’s what made it so infuriating to think about. Rocket will come for them either way. Like he told @yuina, you either take the plunge or fall against your will. Either way, the darkness beneath will rise to greet you.[break][break]
What can he say as he hears the anger in her voice? What condolence can he offer in this zero sum, all or nothing game that men call war? He is the Warrior. This is his craft, his trade, his writ and his warrant. For Andrea…[break][break]
It’s hell. A travesty. A farce, and all he can do is frown, nodding at the condolence she offers. Gabe died, and then one by one his Pokemon fell too.[break][break]
“Thank you. I still miss him.” It’s not what he should be saying. Years and years have passed since Gabe died, and still the wound is fresh. All he gives her is a promise that there will always be a hole in her heart where Chomper is supposed to be. They shared a soul through their sync stone. He can’t imagine what that must feel like, to be missing part of yourself.[break][break]
“Silph was wrong to put that idea in your head.” He looks out the window, out at the sky so full of stars that shine through the mist.[break][break]
“Chomper…did you get to bury him? I’ll go to Petalburg and find him if you didn’t.” He does not know the circumstances of the dragon’s death. Petalburg is a fortress, but he speaks the words with certainty.

“There’s nothing left to bury…” Mumbled the young cosplayer in response. Whatever remained of Chomper’s body after Kouji Matsubara had ordered that airstrike was burned to ashes along with half of Petalburg City.

All that survived was a memory. Many memories, in fact. Both good and bad. Thinking of all the laughs and tears they had shared made the void in her heart all the more unbearable.

“What now?” Andrea looked pleadingly at the older man for any sort of guidance. “Am I supposed to hate Rocket forever now? Am I supposed to hate Silph? I… I don’t know what to think anymore.”
