you know what you did.[break][break]spoken in the steely disgust in her eyes and the hard line of her mouth. they reach for her wrist and her fingers curl tighter in their dark hair in response, unwilling to give up the leverage she has now. their madness doesn't move her the way their words do. every syllable is kindling to a blinding, immolating rage building in her chest. [break][break]they tilt their head back. she realizes a half-second too late. she tries to jerk her face away, but their blood-tinged spit hits its target. she shuts her eyes against it, responding in kind with another bodily yank on their hair. her free hand reaches up instinctively, smearing pink saliva across the side of it. [break][break]"bend it to my will? are all you rockets this fucking dumb? we're working together to do the right fucking thing." [break][break]her body grows heavier. the canopy of nearby trees shear their fragile crowns, twigs and small branches falling away beneath the unnatural gravity bearing down on the route. [break][break]"and getting rid of you fuckers is the right thing," she forces the words out, legs trembling against the strain of standing. "doesn't matter how it's done as long as it's done." [break][break]curled up within the protection of its bubble, mew brings the skirmishers to heel. even annalise and ollie aren't spared from the crushing weight of the universe bearing down on them. forced to release fern, annalise is pinned to the ground with a grunt, then a desperate gasp. [break][break]mew extends its influence, placing the rangers into bubbles that lessen the intensity of the gravity. it turns its glowing eyes towards ollie, almost expectantly. [break][break]and annalise turns her eyes towards fern, predatory.

it's a dull throb behind his temples, now, thanks to the power of the shimmering starlight before him.

[break][break] he feels relief sag into his bones as the power of the Z-MOVE shines before them all, and he finds himself - finally - being able to take a breath. but such relief is only short-lived, not when he spots annalise henderson just a few feet away from him, snarling insults at their rocket opponent.

[break][break] fear seizes him momentarily, seesing flashes of NEON back at the art gallery. how unwilling to reason he had been. how demented. how fragile.

[break][break] "a-anna! get off them! it's not - "

[break][break] 'it's not worth it.'

[break][break] 'not at the cost of your life.'

[break][break] it was the same sort of direction that he'd given her at the raid, had given people like Genevieve Cromwell and Josh Devlin, when he'd bore witness to how stubborn and determined they were to give their lives over — again and again — for a war that wasn't even theirs to begin with.

[break][break] but that was the point, wasn't it? it was their war to fight. they were hoenn citizens. maybe ollie had never understood it because he wasn't from the region, because he was a bird in mid-flight, always so eager to run at a moment's notice.

[break][breka] but he wasn't strong. not like annalise henderson, who was so determined to destroy rockets - destroy fern delaney - no matter the cost.

[break][break] memories sift through him as the fog of pain finally fades. flashes of burning amber and deep blue and bright-flecked gold.

[break][break] the sight of GIDEON GRAVES willing to sacrifice his life for him.

[break][break] guilt swarms in his throat, and suddenly - impulsively - the same far-fetched determination seizes him.

[break][break] casting his own stupid human will aside.

[break][break] "SHUT UP! you don't know her. you don't know mew. you don't know us."

[break][break] "anna!" he shouts, voice suddenly ringing with purpose. the kind of strength and vindication of a head ranger. finally, now, between the two of them. "get the fuck away from him. it's not worth it."

[break][break] DRAGON DARTS erupt like spluttering rocket missiles, its fiery trails streaking through the sky as they collide into his JOLTEON and leaving it fainted. meanwhile, ollie's wyrdeer steps forward. it's eyes glow soft pink as a LIGHT SCREEN manifests just in time to intercept the tapu koko's incoming blow. golden horns spark with pain as the pokemon absorbs the brunt of the impact, resolute in it's desire to protect both rangers.

[break][break] "we're leaving!"

[break][break] reaching for his belt, the head ranger reaches for a pokeball with a golden sticker. it's tossed up into the air, cracking open in a brilliant display of light, as a KADABRA manifests.

[break][break] it's spoons glow with powerful psychic power before the air warps around them, and attempts to TELEPORT them to safety.

"Are you?" they croon back at her. "What exactly is right about this?" Their hair embedded in her fist, head bent at an awkward angle with an arm riddled with torn teeth marks as blood coats it all dark dark red. "I'm so sorry to inform you darling, but whatever high ground you're standing on? It doesn't excuse eradicating people."[break][break]

They do not actually sound all the sorry to say so.[break][break]

You're wild like me, pet, whether you like it or not.[break][break]

Fern says this without saying it. It's in the upward tilt of their mouth, another flashing glint of their teeth.[break][break]

She is raw and electric with every bit of furious emotion that runs her through. It batters at the layers of her skin, itching to bleed out - noxiously potent and acidic.[break][break]

They liken this to artistry in motion. Not quite yet a masterpiece. She is still in need of revision, they decide.[break][break]

Just a bit more carving away of the softer parts that hold her in check. But they are unsure if there is all that much left.[break][break]

Mew forcing gravity to bend to its will and peel them apart speaks enough of its desire to prevent her action from becoming a brutal end for them. this act alone halts annalise henderson from making an irreversible choice.[break][break]

"What's that?" Their head turns to look at ollie morales and the smile is shared for him as well. "Don't I? Are you sure you know her as well as you think?" They don't think he does. Their gaze slides back to her, "I think she would have put me down whether you were here or not, if she'd gone for the throat instead. Next time, try a little harder, hm? You're boring me."[break][break]

A lie, of course, as they delight in the chaos. But this is always what a charlatan does best.[break][break]

NATURE'S MADNESS spills out around Tapu Koko as its efforts are once again blocked. Fury stirs in the guardian's being and the attack begins to rip and warp the natural landscape around them. Fern's eyes are bright, but they know it comes too late.

As Ollie whisks Anna off like a fairytale night, their eyes remain on hers. Their hand, nearly coquettish, lifts to the side of their face - the wiggle of their fingers and a wink send her off. If she's looking closely enough, she might pick up the mouthed, bye bye, blondie, as if this were no more than a social affair.[break][break]

Their little way of saying a cheerful see you again soon![break][break]

The effects of Mew's interference lifts as the trio winks away and Fern rises halfway to sit on the ground. The pain crashes back in as their hold on their ability wanes, but they let themself feel it. Irrefutable proof of being alive. Above them, Tapu Koko flits about irritably - lighting pinging off of its body as its agitation compels it to expel what energy remains.[break][break]

Fern can relate. They are exhausted, but the interaction has left them alight with something electric that has little to do with the element that runs through them. Still, they examine the damage to their arm as they find their phone to call on jayden cross.[break][break]

"Duck, dear..." their voice loses its air of mania as they slip into something fluid and brusque. A bit cajoling and sweet as they downplay the situation, "I've found myself in need of assistance..." Reclaiming her pokeball, they recall the unconscious dragapult, and amusedly think that at least she managed to knock out her opponent.
