GIDEON GRAVES' caution proves well-founded. Rapidash and rider approach not with the thunder of hooves, but the soft hiss of phantom flame.[break][break]

It was a shame, really. The museum director was collateral. They'd probably get along if they weren't on opposite sides. Head Ranger ollie morales is Cillian's target, and the underboss closes in with murderous intent. By the time they're close enough to hear the crackling of the flame and the heavy breathing of his shadowed mount, Cillian's tossing a second Pokémon onto the path.[break][break]

The eerie HOWL of the werewolf shatters the peaceful atmosphere of the route, and the Rapidash surges forth with a SHADOW BLITZ to run the ranger down.

[break][break] the SAFEGUARD from his nearby dragonite is imperfect, and ollie is thrown against a tree, bark digging into his back and flames licking at the edges of his ranger uniform. pistachio defends with a THUNDER WAVE that cuts through the air.

Even on a battlefield, ollie morales knew the best ways to coax a smile onto GIDEON GRAVES' lips. His carefree demeanor was almost convincing enough for the professor to drop his guard — but the moment wasn't meant to last.[break][break]

From the shadows emerged a specter of a man with two wild beasts at his call. Gideon's eyes widened in shock at the ghostly horse and its even gloomier rider as they galloped past... straight toward the head ranger.[break][break]

"Ollie!"[break][break]

Fear almost overtook instinct. Flashes of the art gallery and mint frost came to mind, but Gideon was determined not to run away this time. He wouldn't allow ollie morales to fight ROCKET alone.[break][break]

Even terrifying ones like Cillian Quinn.[break][break]

A SHEDINJA emerged from a hastily-lobbed Poké Ball along with an even hastier order for the Bug-type to protect Ollie from oncoming attacks. Following instructions, the SHEDINJA used SHADOW SNEAK to rush to the ranger's defense and help against the RAPIDASH and LYCANROC.

Luckily for him, his Rapidash is able to shake off the effect enough to keep moving, using its natural AGILITY to prance back. It snorts as the SHADOW SNEAK hits-

[break][break] But his eyes fall upon the broad back of the Museum Director, and suddenly he freezes, words failing him for another reason. One that won't bring words to name. He knows there's no use in trying to argue — Gideon is far too stubborn, far too relentless, to leave him behind again.

[break][break] "Stache! Focus on him!" He calls for his loyal Dragonite. They don't even need to exchange a glance — completely in sync, the dragon swoops above, unleashing tornados of TWISTER towards the immobilized Rocket Underboss and his Rapidash.

And die it does. Gruesomely, in fact.[break][break]

The SHEDINJA, faithful to the man that had raised it from a larva, did not flee from the ravenous LYCANROC. Instead, the Bug-type stood its ground and tried to fend off its attacker with a flurry of FURY SWIPES. Its pointed forelegs may have hit once or twice, but pain from the wolf's fiery punch quickly halted the attack.[break][break]

"No, wait—!" Illuminating orange danced in GIDEON GRAVES 's horror-struck eyes.[break][break]

The flames stuck and spread, igniting on the SHEDINJA's chitinous carapace. Its screams of agony were high-pitched and wailing as it fluttered helplessly to the ground.[break][break]

Reacting in desperation, Gideon ran forward and stumbled to his knees beside the convulsing insect. In a scrambling mess of limbs, he then hurriedly removed the jacket he was wearing and attempted to snuff out the flames engulfing his Pokémon. [break][break]

It was futile, of course. The SHEDINJA soon stilled in GIDEON GRAVES 's arms.

It feels like ages before the pain of the paralysis fades. It's probably less than ten seconds in reality, but it's long enough that he doesn't notice the TWISTER in time.[break][break]

His Rapidash does, thank Arceus, and ALLY SWITCHES with the Lycanroc before the attack hits. The confused werewolf swings its head around with a snarl before reorienting to its new space, surrounding itself with the fey energy of PLAY ROUGH to take the edge off the spiraling draconic winds.[break][break]

Now GIDEON GRAVES and ollie morales both would find themselves closer to the Harbinger than either would've liked.[break][break]

Especially the poor museum director, whose beloved bug would twitch as SHADOW MIASMA pools around the underbosses new position. Its wings flutter. It rises.[break][break]

And it casts a HEAL BLOCK against the Harbinger's enemies.[break][break]

The shadow himself inspires terror, a SHADOW PANIC preying upon and strengthening anxieties already present within the duo. Taking advantage of the resulting CONFUSION to get his bearings as the stiffness in his limbs abates, Cillian guides his Rapidash a few paces back from the Rangers.[break][break]

It wouldn't do to underestimate them.

He'd warned Gideon. He's warned him — at least tried to. But there is no avoiding it — not now, and maybe not ever. With war came death, and with death, destruction. It's a lesson that Ollie has been forced to learn again and again, ever since his boots had set once again on Hoenn soil, and ever since he'd risen to his current seat.

[break][break] Before he can drag them to safety, sheer TERROR surged from the Avatar, making his knees week. Shadowy tendrils snaked around his legs, poisonous black bubbling against league gold, as he buckled suddenly to the floor. But even then, his arms moved instinctively to shield the man beside him, hopefully from the weight of the move itself.

[break][break] Flames danced in the Head Ranger's eyes as he spotted his Dragonite from afar cut through the air towards the CONFUSED Lycanroc, aiming to pummel the canine with a FIERY fist.

[break][break] Dizzy and frantic, Ollie reached for his pokeball — a familiar, wellworn sphere with a pink hue — to release his Blissey. However, in his CONFUSION, instead — fingers brush against Ladybug's pokeball. The ORBEETLE appears, wings buzzed, and Ollie blinked in bewilderment.

He looked up at his half-charred SHEDINJA, back from the dead as a miasma-controlled puppet, with confusion and grief and horror in his eyes. And then, briefly, his gaze fell on Cillian Quinn.[break][break]

What kind of monster was this? That could bend the rules of mortality? [break][break]

A sharp tug at his collar brought the professor back to his grim reality. If he and ollie morales didn't act quickly, they'd be the next ones dead and controlled by this demonic man. There was no winning this.[break][break]

Scrambling to his feet as dark tendrils spasmed all around, Gideon went to where ollie morales had fallen in the dirt, injured after protecting him. Again. It burned him up on the inside to be such a burden on someone he cared for so, so much.[break][break]

"I'm fine!" The professor assured, his arms moving to hoist the ranger up and support him, if needed. "But we need to run. Now!"[break][break]

Sensing the fear and panic in his trainer's voice, Scribe the ROTOM, who inhabited GIDEON GRAVES's tablet, emerged from the device in his pocket. It acted as a distraction — conjuring a SUBSTITUTE to take on incoming attacks, as well as summoning a slew of copies of itself using DOUBLE TEAM.

This was not ollie morales's first encounter with the Harbinger. It may not be his last. Yet for as much as he knew Cillian's strength and brutality, still he throws himself over GIDEON GRAVES.[break][break]

It reminds Cillian of Tempest Quinn's eagerness to defend him, to defend any Rocket on the battlefield.[break][break]

Less of a coward than I thought.[break][break]

Of course, no amount of begrudging respect would stop Cillian from attempting to confirm the kill.[break][break]

Rapidash gallops in a broad circle around the ranger and his companion, the INFERNO in the wake of its hooves like a fiery cage. Black lightning arcs around the Harbinger's hands as he curls claws to fists. There is no brief scent of ozone to herald the SHADOW BOLT that slams down toward the pair.[break][break]

Lycanroc falls for the SUBSTITUTE set up by Rotom, growling in frustration as it LASHES OUT at empty duplicates. The Dragonite's FIERY PUNCH scorches stony fur, causing the werewolf to falter from its BURN. Red eyes glow with fury as it pants, showing no intention of surrender despite its injuries.

IMMOBOLIZED thanks to the TERROR induced by Cillian Quinn's attacks, it did not bode well for the Head Ranger and his companion as the sound of galloping hooves echoed around them. Terrifying walls of flame mirrored in the man's emerald eyes as he stared around them. Though he heard the urgency in GIDEON GRAVES's voice — 'But we need to run, now!' - he couldn't move.

[break][break] He was terrified.

[break][break] This was the worst possible situation.

[break][break] How did he get here? How could he have gotten here?

[break][break] "I - "

[break][break] The words felt like mush in his mouth, as his limbs did, even as he tried to force them up from the ground. He staggered to his feet, throat closed with fear.

[break][break] But his head darts to the side as he sees his DRAGONITE just beyond that fiery wall, slamming a fist into the disoriented Lycanroc, and he sees his chance.

[break][break] "Ladybug! Ally Switch, now!"

[break][break] It's the worst possible situation.

[break][break] But he has no choice.

[break][break] The Orbeetle shimmers to life with the power of the ALLY SWITCH, swapping their bodies in place of the canine. Everything happens in a blur, but Ollie is running straight on fumes at this point, grabbing Gideon and attempting to shove the other man atop his Dragonite.

[break][break] Guilt swarms his eyes as he looks back at his Orbeetle, caught in the ring of FLAME, destined for death as the SHADOW BOLT strikes it down. For carnage and a life of eternal suffering.

[break][break] He did that. He chose that.

[break][break] There was no denying it anymore.

It was only because of ollie morales's quick thinking that the two men were able to escape the circle of dark flames — though not without cost. [break][break]

After scrambling onto the back of the DRAGONITE with Ollie's help, GIDEON GRAVES then watched in horror as his friend's ORBEETLE stood its ground against an impossible enemy. He knew there was no saving Ladybug.[break][break]

They'd both lost a trusted companion here today.[break][break]

Ringing his arms around ollie morales's waist, the professor held on tightly and yelled against the wind, "Go!"

Lycanroc whirls around in confusion as it finds itself in the center of the ring of flames, embers still licking at its stony coat. Its red eyes are glazed with pain, slavering jaws parted to taste the air for its prey. But all it can taste is smoke and blood.[break][break]

Shadows swallow it as it's recalled; in the split second decision Cillian makes to save his Pokémon from death, so too does his would-be victims make their escape.[break][break]

But not without casualty.[break][break]

The SHADOW BOLT strikes down the noble Orbeetle whose efforts saved the lives of ollie morales and GIDEON GRAVES. A selfish, thankless sacrifice. Yet when the bug twitches, it is not from the MIASMA.[break][break]

Cillian crouches next to Ladybug, running his hand along her scorched shell as umbral claws revert to pale, scarred fingers. Though the carapace was undoubtedly damaged, it was not beyond repair. But with the ring of flame surrounding the Harbinger and the Orbeetle, the Head Ranger wouldn't know.[break][break]

"Ladybug." He tests its name on his tongue, and it echoes in a whisper drowned by the crackling flames. "I'm sure I can find a use for you."
