Many League soldiers assigned to defend Petalburg and Rustboro were struggling to hold their ground. But not Roy. He was fueled by a fierce protectiveness, a fire that burned too hot for retreat. Losing here meant losing everything, and after the disaster at Sootopolis, failure was not an option. If it were up to him, every Team Rocket member foolish enough to cross his path would be nothing more than a fading memory.

Roy's Sceptile, perched high among the branches, blended seamlessly into the cyan-tinted shadows of the forest canopy. Its eyes gleamed, sharp and aware, while its snout lifted slightly, attuned to the pulse of the forest around them. Below, Roy remained grounded, hidden in the shade near the trunk. His gaze swept the undergrowth with every muscle in his body tensing up as it prepared for a potential foe.

A frail looking man, stick thin and sickly, trudges heavily through the underbrush. A Love Ball is grasped knuckle white with trembling fingers, wide blue eyes flicking back and forth. The clothes are plain, clearly someone not meant to be here. Dirt is smudged on pale cheeks. The free hand is pressed over a red wound on his arm.[break][break]

Roy spotted the man in the distance. For a moment, he hesitated, instincts flickering, but the eerie stillness of the area convinced him there were no tricks lurking in the shadows.

"Over here!" he called, signaling with a sharp wave of his arm, beckoning the man through the dense foliage.

"Are you hurt?" Roy asked, closing the gap between them with cautious urgency.

High above, Sceptile remained statuesque, perfectly concealed in the cyan-hued leaves of the tree. Its body was still, but its crimson eyes moved, the pupils narrowing as they tracked the man’s every subtle movement. Roy approached, but Sceptile's senses stayed locked on the figure.

As Chu-e had worried, there is a reply.[break][break]

He moves towards the voice anyway, squinting through the brush and foliage until he spots the man. A few half-dashed steps has him out of breath as he slowly closes distance.[break][break]

"Just a little!" Is answered. But Chu-e does not draw close enough for Roy Aker to inspect. "I got nicked by a wild pokemon."[break][break]

Chu-e is quiet for a moment, then, as he searches the man's face.[break][break]

A pity.[break][break]

"You should have been more careful."[break][break]

It's followed by a whistle, which is in-turn followed by a sudden rumbling and shifting of the earth between them. A pit opens up, a massive, muscular, fat, and oddly mutated Delcatty Digging her way out of the ground. She swipes at Roy with savage claws.

Roy extended his hand, his guard lowered by the man’s feigned desperation. Before their fingers were about to meet, the ground beneath them trembled, a deep rumble erupting with violent force. Roy’s eyes flicked up, catching the subtle shift in the man’s expression just before the earth gave way beneath him.

In a blink, Roy was thrown off balance, collapsing as a massive feline sprang from the newly-formed pit. The Delcatty’s claws gleamed in the dim light, descending like the jaws of a beast ready to tear its prey apart. Roy, helpless and reeling from the betrayal, could do nothing but watch the impending strike.

However, as the chaos unfolded, something stirred in the treetops. The wind rustled through the leaves, an odd movement that seemed just a little too deliberate. Roy's Sceptile, hidden within the canopy, had been watching the entire time, moving silently through the branches.

With a sudden burst of speed, Sceptile shot from the trees like a blade through the air, the wind seeming to part around it. In an instant, it was between Roy and the descending Delcatty, its arms glowing with sharp, verdant energy. Leaf Blade met claw in a flash of light and sound, the impact stopping the attack just before it reached Roy. The battlefield stilled for a moment, Roy's breath caught in his throat, the revelation of the Rocket member’s deception sinking in.

Instead of cleaving Roy Aker in twain, claws meet blade. Sparklefur pushes against the attack, trying to use her bulk to her advantage, but in the end she slides off and suffers a deep slice on delicate paw-pads for her efforts. Corrupted blood wells up and drips to the ground.[break][break]

Chu-e, having now backed up slightly, releases his false wound to hold himself steady.[break][break]

"I'm sorry I have to punish your kindness." While it does sound sincere, Chu-e's face reflects no emotions one way or the other.[break][break]

A few snaps of the finger.[break][break]

The Delcatty steels herself, shaking herself out before she takes a great inhale. A putrid, fish-stink breath of freezing air leaves her body, the Blizzard frosting over the trees and grass.

Sceptile threw itself between the Delcatty and Roy with the full intention of buying its trainer precious time. Roy scrambled to his feet, breath ragged, as his grass-type braced for the incoming assault. The Delcatty’s jaws parted, unleashing an icy blast. Without hesitation, Sceptile surged forward, absorbing the full force of the attack to shield Roy as he staggered back, creating distance.

"You’re all the same; just smoke and mirrors," Roy growled, his voice low but filled with venom similar to the toxic chain. His hand clenched around a poke ball in his pocket. "Nothing but cheap tricks."

As the ice overtook Sceptile, Roy recalled it, watching his loyal partner fall in battle. His chest tightened with guilt but also gratitude for the defense. He couldn’t afford to hesitate. With the same swift motion, Roy sent Balmung into the fray. The flash of light from the poke ball ignited the air as his Charizard rocketed from its release, already diving toward their enemy.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to burn you all to the ground,” Roy muttered, his words seething with a quiet, dangerous resolve. His fingers slipped into his pocket, retrieving a stone glowing with raw energy. As Balmung closed the distance, the stone pulsed in his hand, erupting with a burst of infinity energy.

"Finish this, Balmung!" Roy commanded.

In an instant, Charizard’s body erupted into blue flames, its form shifting and growing more fierce as it Mega Evolved mid-flight. The blazing aura of Flare Blitz surrounded Balmung, turning the Charizard into a living missile aimed directly at the foe, ready to obliterate anything in its path.

The battle raged on, but it was clear Roy's opponent wasn't there to win fights. Just like the other grunts on the route, the moment this one spotted an opening, he seized the chance to escape. Roy felt the urge to pursue, but he resisted, standing his ground to brace for any other potential attackers in the area.

"Nice work," he said, turning to his dragon as it returned to its previous form. The charizard growled in response to their victory.
