The road from Petalburg to Oldale is simple. There are no raging rivers, no towering mountains, no monsters lurking in the dark. No, the single route between here and there is a perfectly normal route for a perfectly normal town in the otherwise abnormal region of Hoenn.[break][break]

Or, it was.[break][break]

Now, though, the sky burns bright and weeps black smoke. The gentle quiet has become a cacophony of growls and roars and cries and gunfire. War is like fire, and having burnt Petalburg to ash and char, it has spread to here, too.[break][break]

And so have you.[break][break]

As you walk down the road paved by fresh conflict, you stare at the distant shadow of Oldale on the horizon, and the glory that lies beyond it.

It’s just a simple road. In another world, a world where all is as it should be, this route is just a footnote on a champion’s path to glory. Autumn’s first chill coats the route, and with it comes strange mist. Folk on both sides ready for round two. Sootopolis, Petalburg, and Mosseep were naught but preambles to a greater battle.[break][break]
Oldale lies beyond the horizon. Beyond that town waits glory. All it takes is for momentum to build and Rocket’s red tide will sweep across the whole region. A knight stands in the center of the road, sword facing downward and pierced into the ground.[break][break]
“Shred.” Speaks the knight, backed by a one-armed Iron Valiant. He sounds tired, worn, like a sword on the precipice of rust. “Arceus. Look what this region’s done to us.” There’s no joy in his smile, not even an echo of the emotion. They are here, cast as enemies. It feels like a lifetime ago when they clashed in a Slateport arena to satisfy their own egos and urge to fight.[break][break]
“Petalburg’s back that way, man.” An olive branch is offered, though Navy knows Shred won’t take it. Some part of it hopes he won’t, since he’s down 1-2 after Sootopolis.

It always comes down to this. Any in life where Navy becomes Navy instead of dying as Michael Navidson at the hands of a drunken father or an errant gang, it always boils down to this. It’s his life boiled down to one action: the draw. An old client said he had the bearing of a gunslinger long before howard slayte crowned him with a brown hat and solidified that image.[break][break]
“I’ve been thinking ‘bout what you said during Sootopolis.” Of everything that happened that day, Shred’s words burn bright in his mind. When he slumbers in his weald, he dwells on them. It’d win him points for style with the crowd in a Galarian arena. There are no imagined cheers here, only cold reality cast in chrome flesh. Roland, who had once been a chronically shy Gallade passing his shyness off as stoicism, stands between the humans.[break][break]
“Here.” Ascalon appears in Navy’s hand, throwing it to the paradox men call Iron Valiant. “Come on, Shred. Let’s fight.”

with an understated tap of the button, you release your slither wing. a paradox of past faces down a paradox of the future. once again, the situation feels familiar. nevertheless, you close your fist upon the now-empty pokeball, and watch as it trembles, then cracks, then shatters into a dozen pieces.[break][break]

"but yours comes first." in your now empty hand, orichalcum flows forth and takes shape. it's crude at first, like modern art, sharp edges and odd angles without purpose. but as the seconds pass, it manifests into its true form, a dustox of an executioner's axe bursting free from the cascoon of creation. "you should be honoured, mikey-boy. you get to be my whetstone. and once i'm nice and sharp?"[break][break]

you stomp your foot into the ground, heave your axe high, and roar.[break][break]

"I'LL CUT YOUR PRECIOUS LITTLE LEAGUE TO A THOUSAND FUCKING PIECES!"[break][break]

right on cue, your slither wing springs to life, and it wastes no time going on the offensive. in the blink of an eye, the primeval volcarona is upon the mechanical gallade, ready to smash into its foe at full speed.[break][break]

quite the first impression... even if it is, in truth, the second.

There’s some comfort in knowing that justice is coming for Declan Walsh, whether at Ascalon’s edge or on the end of Shred’s axe. It’s a frightening thing, this weapon he conjures, and his heart would sink were it not for the many battles that led him to this moment.[break][break]
When Shred’s Slither Wing bursts forth, taking the initiative and setting the tempo of this battle, Navy’s hand balls into a fist. It’s a little tick of his when recognition dawns for him. This creature is strong, well-trained, the same Pokemon that felled Junior almost ~~twenty-one~~ two years ago.[break][break]
Roland’s protest is a soft grunt, like the whining of circuits. The sound is replaced by the song of rising steel. First blood and second impression goes to Slither Wing, but Ascalon’s edge rises to meet the primordial beast. His spirit break is more a test, meant to either bloody the creature or force it back. The one-armed knight’s movements are perfect, wasting no effort, going no farther than they need to go.[break][break]
“And what would you prop up, Shred? When it’s all burned down? When Hoenn’s ash and you’re in charge? What’s life gonna be like in your kingdom?” Some part of him knows. It’s written in the beautiful ugly edge of his axe, condensed orichalcum forced to a killing edge for singular purpose. It’s a world meant for him, a world of the strong.[break][break]
There’s nothing in all the world he’d ~~love~~ hate to see more than that.

but of course, that's that, isn't it? there's no more brain cells to lose. no more rainbow to wish upon. no more revives, no more do-overs, no more second chances. this is it for him. the last life he'll ever get.[break][break]

and it'll only get shorter before it gets longer.[break][break]

the spirit break lands a glancing blow as your slither wing dodges back, forced away from the whirring blade. still, a chunk of fuzz is torn from its hide and a trickle of blood spurts from a shallow wound. yet, that's easily fixed, isn't it? and as the prehistoric volcarona lurches for the futuristic gallade, its intention to leech life from the machine is all too evident.[break][break]

as is your intention to reveal this oh-so-noble fairytale knight as the monty python fuckwit he really is.[break][break]

"and what about your empire, michael? your wretched little democracy, led by the likes of PENELOPE LIVY? does it make you happy? does it feel good? does bending over a barrel and getting fucked in the ass by ruiners make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? or does having a cushy government job with a seven figure salary do that for you?"

“Shut up!” He shouts, knowing them as weak words when they leave his mouth. Shred might as well be a mirror, held up, speaking truths he tells himself when he sits in the Weald. Chained in duty, liberated by his oath, he sits and he seethes at those who should be his allies.[break][break]
“At least I’m fuckin’ standing up for somethin’, Shred, or Jack, or whatever the hell you’re calling yourself these days!” All Shred has done is tell him the truth and it uncorks the bottle of his rage. Inside him is a dragon’s rage, as much as he masquerades as some noble thing. Roland, ever the loyal iron knight, winces both at the words and at the power his prehistoric foe saps from him. Seeds sprout into carnivorous plants along his joints, a promise of new life built in the ruins of the old.[break]
“I’d kill Livy if I could, or Silph, or so many of those bastards – but then you’d be right.” You, Rocket, all the people who tell him might makes right. That’s what the creed boils down to, stripped away of its pretense. They serve at the pleasure of the boss, and who is the boss if not the strongest? A man powerful enough to seize that title could hold the world in his hand, to do with as he pleased.[break][break]
“All the shit I’ve been through would be for nothing. All the people who depend on me’d realize the guy they look up to’s just some psycho who gets off on fighting. Hoenn deserves better than that, even if somethin’ good might grow in the ashes of the world you burn.”[break][break]
“Roland! Keep it up! Don’t back down!” Each word is spoken like the decisive stroke of a sword. Roland hops forward, right into the path of a black ball thrown by Navy. Within that ball he sees a thousand worlds, emerging stellar, his revolving crown exuding power. Shred strips away all the pretense, all the fool’s gold wisdom, all his ideals. What is left in their place is an ugly truth, written across his face in an ugly snarl. In a distant garden, in a dreamed world, he cast aside envy, hate, grudges, and fear. How easy it is to do those things with a man like howard slayte at your side. How easy it is, in some imagined world, to be better.[break][break]
He envies Shred. He envies Shred for the paradise that awaits him beyond the veil. There lies Valhalla, where a warrior might sup and drink and fuck and fight to his heart’s content. That way lies glory. That way lies honor in this toothless age of laws. If anything waits beyond life’s final door for Navy besides the void he beheld before, it is Elysium. It is gentle rest for a man who wants nothing of the sort.[break][break]
“So be it.”[break][break]
His words are a growl, lips twisting into a hateful snarl. He rages against the world, against the truth, with a savage fury. Ascalon appears in his hand, twisted. It is misshapen, far larger than it was before, more a sharpened club than the sword of heroes.[break][break]

For just one moment, whether by hallucination or the grace of crystalline possibility, Navy shows Shred his real face. It is a savage thing, a wolf clad in dark armor bearing a wicked sword. The moment passes. The Warrior meets Shred, his blade an iron head smashing against the weapon brought to bear.[break][break]
Roland cries out in a mechanical voice, left weaponless at a crucial moment. His cry echoes on into silence as the Grimmsnarl shatters one of Navy’s mightiest Pokemon.[break][break]
There is no time for consideration, no time for thought. There is only the mad swinging of his sword, rage, and a foe who must be destroyed.

your nameless axe clashes against the legendary sword again and again and again. every shower of sparks is a sky full of fireworks. every echoing clang is the thump of a baseline. the adrenaline rushing straight to your head is a cocktail of drugs and alcohol unlike any other. it feels so precarious, doesn't it? and it is. your lives hang on the edge of your blades. one dodge, one parry, one block, all it would take is one move to bring this party to a premature end.[break][break]

and yet, it simply goes on and on and on. clash. clash. clash. again. again. again. even as your muscles begin to ache, even as your bones scream, even as your axe begins to splinter and break, the rhythm refuses to end. clashing and clashing again and again. a neverending party stretching twenty years and beyond.[break][break]

He feels alive, perhaps for the first time since Gabe died. He chased ghosts, broke up breeding farms and smuggling rings, smuggled dangerous goods himself, fought people he had no business fighting, and for what? To honor his brother’s memory, to honor the name bestowed upon him?[break][break]
No. It was for the love of the game. He dances with Shred across this empty little patch of road. The paradoxical warrior’s axe is a marvelous weapon, withstanding blow after blow from Ascalon when not even Gwyar Wledig’s swords could stand against its edge.[break][break]
It’s exhausting. It’s intoxicating. Every haggard breath is a sharp splinter of pain in his lungs. Battle is a young man’s game. They play it well all the same, every blow making Navy wonder if this would be the last one. Somewhere far away, an old wolf watches his body as it rests in still waters. She sees that he’s smiling.[break][break]
“I’ll send you back to Petalburg in a body bag.” He lies, though there is power in this lie. Inwardly, he senses all the metal in the area. He wonders if this is how Zaria feels when the time comes to empower Ascalon. With a hundred invisible arms, he reaches out, pulling every stray bit of metal in, right towards him.[break][break]
He leaps to the air in a wordless scream, forgetting to speak, forgetting to be human. Ascalon rises high with him as all that metal forms around its edge. The blade glows with red killing light, rage pouring from his soul into the metal. Learned men call this stroke the behemoth blade when Zaria cleaved giants.[break][break]
The warrior falls upon the beast speaking to him in Shred’s voice, a red streak of flames, like a comet coming to wipe the slate clean.

of course, nothing good lasts forever. if it did, it wouldn't be good, would it? no, it'd just be another dead end, another fried nerve ending, another link in the chain. this is an explosion, beautiful and chaotic and above all else, unique. you can set off another bomb, but it'll never be the same as this one. in the shuffle of countless universes, countless versions, and countless copies, this moment is truly one of a kind.[break][break]

so, as the timer ticks to zero and the fuse burns to the exploder, you get ready to burn bright.[break][break]

ascalon shines as bright as a supernova. it is a weapon steeped in a myth, forged in a false history in a false world. yet, as howard slayte would surely attest, its legend was as real as any other. compared to that, your brute axe seems humble. to pit this crude metalwork against the behemoth blade itself almost seems unfair. but then again, isn't life itself unfair? and yet, you push through and live it. and so, you'll push forward and tear his fucking head from his body.[break][break]

"AGIAAAS!!!"[break][break]

for the last time, a named sword and a nameless axe clash against one another. the saviour of galar stares down the knight with no name. a battle for everything is cast in the shadow of a battle for nothing.[break][break]

CR-CRA-CRAC-CRACK-SHATTER![break][break]

"GYRAAAAAAAAAH!"[break][break]

the axe breaks. the sword cleaves your arms from your body like a hot knife through butter. fountains of red erupt from bloody stumps. breath abandons you. consciousness begins to flee, too. you stagger back, and fall forward. as you do, only one final sentence drips out of your mouth.[break][break]

"guhuhuhuh... Well played, delivery boy..."[break][break]

and with that, you hit the dirt with a thud.

His heart soars with rare, unabashed joy at the sight of Shred’s blood. Some part of him laughs a warrior’s laugh, deep, hearty, full of life. Gone is his joy as Shred falls with but a few parting words. Gone is any triumph as he realizes what he must now do.[break][break]
Before him is a beast. Before him is one of Rocket’s greatest monsters. Before him is a foe worth killing, his own bleeding body serving as testament to the righteousness of what he could do, if only he had the strength to sink his fangs into the fallen’s neck.[break][break]
He takes a step forward, dragging along his twisted red blade with him. Zaria charged him to do his duty, and so he must follow through.[break][break]
A memory comes with the step. Cheap beer, bad cigarettes, a shitty movie. There’s replays of a Galarian sports match, one of the good ones. Both men reflect on how they’d do, if they were the man in the arena.[break][break]
Another step. howard slayte’s face swims in his mind. There was always something so sad in his eyes, whenever Shred’s name was brought up.[break][break]
Another step, a memory of a clash with Grigori Sokolov. That weathered knight’s words were steeped in regret, so assured that his only options are death or victory. What chance will he have of proving otherwise, if he slays that man’s friend?[break][break]
Shred is beneath him. Navy shakes. Unseen, a howl tells him what he must do.[break][break]
“No.” He says at last. “Not, not like, not like this.” He looks to something unseen, the last of his strength fading at last. “If he dies, he’ll have that axe in his hand. He’ll be armed. He’ll be—” Navy slumps, collapsing alongside Shred. His consciousness fades, his chance at ending this monster before he steps into the full stride of his power gone. Navy’s body twists into mist, a shadow recovering his pokeballs and speeding them away.[break][break]
Another ripple cast upon the pond’s surface, another bout of inaction that will spell ruin.
