The road ahead of them was grassy and overrun with overgrowth. Route 102 was the buffer between them and Oldale Town. Trainers had been advised to avoid the area—and rightfully so—Team Rocket quickly set their sights on adjacent settlements, hoping to quickly swallow up the land they could before the League wisened up.[break][break]

Inevitably, they would meet resistance.[break][break]

Adrian was thinking of how to give themselves an early advantage. Something he saw as useful, though not necessarily eco-friendly, was tearing up the earth and laying the foundation for news roads. Allow transport of goods and troops using the available technology, rather than moving on foot, which was quite the exhaustive method...[break][break]

This solution had its holes, sure.[break][break]

But he was sure he could sell it.[break][break]

Due to a previous skirmish, Adrian doesn't go it alone—and instead tails a Beast. It's a bit surprising how quickly they relented, allowing him to accompany them. Almost too convenient...[break][break]

"I'm surprised they haven't retaliated wholesale yet," Adrian admits sheepishly.[break][break]

Inoue Hitoshi wears a beast’s skin well. Ironic, that Rocket would drape him in the title just as he finds his footing as a man. Walking along the route, he stands up straight, hand resting on his katana’s pommel. His back throbs where he was stabbed. The muscles protest when he twists his back, which is why he’s thankful for the company.[break]
“It’s comin’.” Says the beast to one who once wore his title. “Prolly sooner than later.” Or maybe they’ll be allowed to march all the way up the routes. Maybe CIAN MAHER and Hideo Kino will mount glorious defenses. It hardly seems to matter before the might of two titans and the other forces Rocket can bring to bear. If they can ride the tide of conquest, it’ll carry them all the way to Ever Grande.[break]
“Good idea you’ve got, ‘bout tryin’ to make more roads.” His Rillaboom is out of their pokeball, stomping alongside him and surveying the landscape. With the Rillaboom and a few other hardy souls, they might be able to tear up some backroads. Running supplies to the frontlines would be easier if they could manage that.[break]
“Yer reputation precedes ya, by the way. The old guys make ya sound like a regular ole badass.” Inoue Hitoshi speaks with total sincerity, turning back to Adrian Malcolm and smiling a warm smile. “Any tips fer a new beast?”

They would just have to be ready for it. Adrian winces from the gnawing pain in his calf, taking a moment to soothe out the spasm. Mudsdale manages to trample the grass and weeds, reducing the path to dirt where it trots, but it pays mind to its trainer and stops just ahead of them.[break][break]

"I'm glad you don't hate it." He expected to be met with resistance: Intruding on wild species' habitats, the cost of production, and so on were all road blocks... But could they afford not to? That was the question that mattered most.[break][break]

Adrian rises from his kneeling position just as Inoue turns to face him. He didn't always take compliments well, but at least he felt Hitoshi to be anything but disingenuous. Still, it's not as though he executed the role well himself...[break][break]

"...Give them more than just strength."[break][break]

Whether it was hope, inspiration or protection, Team Rocket demanded more of their beasts than the name suggested. It wasn't enough to be strong—anyone could be strong—but they needed charismatic leaders... 'For the glory...'[break][break]

That motiff kept ringing in his ears.[break][break]

But Inoue would be able to tell that the question chaffed him. A previous argument with jayden cross made the nod of reverence bittersweet.[break][break]

"It's for you to decide what that is," Adrian spoke, giving them a buff on the arm as he moved past them, returning his attention to the road ahead. He wouldn't vocalize as much, but Adrian felt it better to learn from his mistakes, than to try and find his few successes.[break][break]

A notion that chaffs him as much as his question chaffs Adrian. Strength is something Inoue Hitoshi cannot give anyone. He feels like a paper wolf, propelled into this position by an urgent, desperate desire to be strong. mint frost is strong, laying the minds of his foes bare. priam conrad is strong, surviving where others die. bryan delarosa is strong enough to lift a tree over his head with one bare hand. Shred wields a king’s strength. Tempest Quinn commands shadows like he was born with a soul dark as ink himself.[break]
And he, the newest beast, least among equals? Simply a creature who wishes to protect his pack, and damn the rest of the world. Let it all burn if that’s what it takes for Yumi and Jayden to be happy. There’s comfort in Adrian’s words – hope that he can find something to offer Rocket that his fellows cannot.[break]
“Somethin’ more than strength.” A repetition of Adrian’s words, echoed in the repetition of his Rillaboom’s drumsticks. Each swing of his twin clubs uproots whatever sits in their path, carving a new path up to the frontlines. It seems Adrian Malcolm offered them a brain, but he’s curious about the man’s perspective.[break]
“What’d you give ‘em, then?”

Adrian didn't subscribe to the fanaticism or the dirty tactics. What's worse, is he was only ever really out for himself. Only a select few earned enough of his favor to warrant consideration. The rest were outsiders, as far as he was concerned.[break][break]

He always played it close to his chest.[break][break]

"...They wanted Yveltal. Call it a nepotism hire." He's being especially facetious, wearing a thin smile. It's probably a disappointing answer to hear from someone you once held in esteem. Yet Adrian was a loner.[break][break]

"I can't imagine I gave them anything they needed, if they unseated me in the end, y'know," he tacks on bluntly.[break][break]

His brow knit itself, and he craned his head around to meet Hitoshi's, careful to mind his step.[break][break]

"I would've thought that was self-evident," he added those words dryly.[break][break]

There was more to his ambitions in joining Team Rocket than rising ranks and acquiring prestige—in fact, such things were only titles for him, and not something he'd have leveraged meaningfully.[break][break]

Empirio Saga was a name that lingered on in memory.[break][break]

That is where he had meant to apply himself.[break][break]

“If all they wanted you for’s Yveltal, then I’m happy you ain’t got that bird no more.” Words quickly followed by more words, meant to clarify. “I hate these damn gods. I hate how they meddle in our lives, like that snow cat did to my aniki.” jayden cross deserves better than Chien-Pao. Jayden Cross deserves the world for seeing worth in a thing as lowly as Inoue Hitoshi.[break]
“But I don’t think strength’s all ya got to offer. Ya came up with a pretty good idea. Better than somethin’ my brain could cook up. When this fight kicks off for real, yer idea’ll prolly save someone’s life.” And, in Hitoshi’s estimation, being able to save a life is worth more than being strong. It’s worth more than the favor of a god.[break]
“You miss it? Yveltal.”
