21 encounter the corpse of a pheromosa or buzzwole being picked apart by mandibuzz.
19 involve following a trail of durant, or their underground mazes.
24 become trapped by a large palossand's vortex as it attempts to devour and drain you of vitality.
25 encounter sentient mounds of sand that attempt to replicate the shapes of loved ones to lure you in (e.g. this can be a palossand or supernatural force).

Clover's chipper self never left, even after the attempted living burial from the cofagrigus. Shuckle's attitude had also not changed, leaving her huffy and unhappy with Montgomery. Clover ignored it, unaware of the rising tension between the other trainer and Shuckle. [break][break]

"There's supposed to be a lot of underground stuff out here in the desert. I wanna explore some of that, but it's hard to find the entrances." Some of it was guarded by coded technology and, Clover had heard, from obelisks. Those things were freaky and otherworldly and super duper cool. Clover really wanted to see one. Hell, she really wanted to take a selfie beside one. [break][break]

The indistinct hills of sand carried no landmarks, though the duo stumbled upon a deceased buzzwole and a small swarm of mandibuzz and vullaby. "I wonder what could have taken out an ultra beast like that." They didn't seem to have a lot of natural predators given their overwhelming strength.

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery spared a sidelong glance at the shuckle, raising his lip at it from behind Clover's back. What the hell did it want from him? He was the one who helped save their trainer from the cofagrigus swarm.

Oh, if he could just punt that thing across the desert, like a ball...

Instead, he kept up at Clover's nine, wrinkling his nose as the buzzwole corpse appeared. It reeked of rot. The mandibuzz didn't seem to mind.

"If somethin' could take down an ultra beast like that, we're mighty fucked here."

Still, he had a mission he needed to accomplish. On the ground, he spotted several lines carved through the sand. durant trail, perhaps?

"Let's follow that 'n see where it goes."

Clover's expression fades into one of childish delight as Montgomery swears. He's one of the cool adults. [break][break]

But his sentiment is also correct. "Maybe it was another ultra beast?" That would be the best case scenario. She hated to imagine something larger and scarier than an ultra beast. Even hostile pokemon wouldn't care to pick a fight with an UB, all things considered. These otherworldly pokemon put out a very unusual aura that turned many pokemon away without even needing a fight. So, what could do this...? [break][break]

"Maybe it'll lead us underground," they offered with excitement as they followed along the durant trail. "I super wanna see an obelisk." Who cares if they were almost buried alive minutes earlier? [break][break]

Amidst Clover's hopes, Shuckle took the opportunity to dive at Montgomery's ankles for a bite.

What if someone came into the desert and saw his bones being picked clean next time, instead of a buzzwole?

He was snapped from his thoughts as something began to gnaw at his ankle. There were no teeth, rather just gums biting as hard as they could around him. Montgomery cursed, lifting his leg to shake the shuckle off.

"Ya little piece a shit! Why, I otta-"

Montgomery cut off as something caught his attention. A figure appeared in the sand, curved, feminine, and all too familiar. He looked through the blinding light, saying...

"Ameena?"

Clover didn't realize anything was off until Montgomery spoke and shook the Shuckle from his leg. "Shuck!" Clover's chastising tone didn't dull the Shuckle's blood lust. She ran to scoop it up in her arms from where it flew from Montgomery's leg. "Sorry, Mr. Montgomery, I don't know why she keeps..."[break][break]

She looked up to see him in a trance with some unusual shape in the sand. Logically, she knew Montgomery looked to be in some sort of trance, but then the sand enticed him, too. He dropped Shuckle and walked towards the shapes, seeing two distinct forms step out of the growing sandstorm: Cillian Quinn and Tempest Quinn . "Mr. Cill-?"[break][break]

Shuckle bit hard on Clover's ankle, breaking her out of the spell that she'd been put under. The shapes of sand were nothing - but the wall of sand around them had grown ever-closer. "Mr. Montgomery!" She charged forward with an arm braced against her face to keep herself from breathing in the abrasive sand. "Break out of it!" She gripped the back of his shirt and tugged with all her one-armed might.

As soon as Montgomery stepped forward, a vortex of sand engulfed him. He was in the eye of the hurricane, but even though he could still breathe, he felt himself growing weaker and weaker by the moment.

"Ameena!" he shouted, looking for her figure.

All he could see were walls of sand.

"A...meen...a..."

The abrasive sands whipped at Clover as he pursued Montgomery further, tugging on his arm with all his strength. However, that strength was sapped, and small abrasions littered his arms and face as he tried to tug the Deputy out of the storm. "Shuck, help!" The shelled pokemon generated a safe guard around them all to block out further sandstorm winds. [break][break]

The delusional effect of the sandstorm might have dissipated with only that much effort, but Shuckle took no chances and latched onto Montgomery's achilles' tendon to snap him out of it with pain.
