Bathing in the warm glow of a fire, Nightingale awaited any indication of another player entering the area. Earlier that same day Adrian had texted Noah, revealing the location and hoping to enjoy some games together. They'd given the affirmative.

Biding his time inspecting the durability of his gear, stroking a hand along the smooth lacquered wood of his bow, Nightingale began to scroll through a list of quests he'd picked up along the way from Aurorus and Fontaine. Ooh, this one's got a special drop reward. Clicking track, he received a beacon.

Strange. It says that I'm already there...

noah's slow at games. the quest list that he consults is filled with unchecked boxes. the rewards and loot hidden behind quests and quotas wait patiently in their partially completed forms. he'll get to them soon.

as he arrives, noah's curious avatar captures the flickering of the fire. he leans over to see 'nightingale', eyes wide in greeting. it's like they're meeting for the first time.

"adrian! almost didn't recognize you, heh... you picked a ranger, yeah?" noah points at the bow with his sword. his own blade is haplessly unembellished. "kyle should be coming soon. the real one. y'know what i mean."

there is enough for noah and adrian to have a quick exchange of words before kyle arrives.

his avatar lumbers towards the coordinates noah gave him, being seen chugging a health potion as he walks. the glass bottle containing it was tossed to the ground, where it disintegrates into pixels instead of staying on the ground as litter.

the distinct look of the avatar is too eerie for kyle not to notice it right away. near him was another character. he squints to read the username, but it's not someone he recognizes.

"hello. noah's friend?" kyle turns to noah after the greeting. "you have friends?"

not that he doubted it, but noah just never talks about his social life as much as kyle does about himself. or maybe they just weren't that privy to each other's private life, which was fine, preferable even.

"I'd say the same, except you look like Kyle. That's kinda freaky." It'd put using himself as an avatar in a good light, but he'd gone and changed that anyways. Perhaps it was a joke between them.

"I get ya." Gesturing to a log before the fireplace, he's hoping they'll take a seat while they wait on their third member. "So, how're you liking Warrior? You've only just started, but still."

Adrian had been considering Warrior, but after reading about the sensation drive powering the real feel of Blades & Bulwarks, he'd decided to pick a class that rarely, if ever, took any damage.

But just then they were joined by the real Kyle, presumably at least, given they'd found his campfire in the middle of Nowhere, Pugilis.

"How goes it? And why's your health still recovering?" Had he been attacked on the way?

"i like warrior! t-b-h, i just chose what looks good." noah plops himself down on the log. seeing the bow again, he scratches his chin and leans closer to the flames. "but maybe ranger's better..."

the crackling of fire hovers over his musing. in instances like these, noah feels as if he's emulating kyle's gesticulations more and more. the phrase, "the medium is the message", applies to the physical body too, it seems.

noah's smile widens as he catches sight of kyle. in his seat, he lifts himself upright like a mightyena at attention.

"i've got plenty of friends, man." noah says quickly. "guy like me makes friends without even trying- this here's adrian! my singer friend."

he leans over and punches adrian in the arm playfully.

"yeah, i've been grinding. there's this dungeon my friends and i wanted to tackle. i just needed more skills before we try, just in case."

he doesn't specify where he grinds for experience and leaves it to the other's assumption.

kyle walks over to sit beside noah, heaving a huff as he lowers himself. noah starts to introduce the person behind the avatar after denying kyle's claim from his rhetoric question. the name and the general description of the person gets a hit from kyle's memory bank.

"wait, that sounds familiar... oh! yeah, i know him too. we went swimming once. and a date, i guess. small world." he turns to noah afterwards, a smile on his face present. "you do look like someone who'd have music people as friends."

a chuckle escapes him before he turns back to adrian.

"how long have you been playing the game? you're at a higher level than noah i hope."

"You don't gotta drop my hobbies to introduce me as a friend," he buffed Noah back across the campfire. Besides, Kyle might've remembered that much, not that Adrian was keeping it much of a secret. Not so much anymore.

"Yeah, that luvdisc situation down near... I forget which Route already." He shrugs; Adrian's in full remembrance, though he shirks around the word date. It conveyed an intimacy not achieved during the speed dating back in February.

Adrian brings up his character page, comparing it to Noah's: Truth be told, they weren't that far apart, but there were a few unattributed stat points from leveling up that had yet to go into effect. Meaning he appeared more a noob than not.

But that'd change once he allocated them.

"I'd say so. I've been holding off on getting new skills to see what's meta," he confers to them with a smirk stealing half his face.

"Oh yeah—" He rummages through his quest pages again, sending out invites to his respective friends before he can continue. After they've joined he shares the quest, so that his friends might help him figure this part out. "So, I've got this quest..."

noah scoops his legs up on the log. he swivels his hips as he knits his hands behind his head.

offering a relaxed smile at adrian, he leans back on kyle's side to use him as a cushion. "swimming and a date? since when?" noah wonders if he was dog-sitting then.

as the campfire glows, the woody fragrance coats the skin with its comforting warmth. he relaxes his tense tongue, the smoke like a sedative.

"what quest do ya got, buddy? maybe we can clear it together." he awaits his answer, noah's back slumps down kyle's arm as he gets more comfortable. his list still remains riddled with unchecked boxes.

kyle recoils with noah's sudden show of affection, unsure to respond with someone else with them. he freezes in place, visibly tense, as he remains indecisive on how to react besides a light tease.

"that's not the reaction i was looking for."

kyle notices adrian's bow, suggesting the class he took. he opts to give him an option to consider since they do have the same skills to choose from. there's still the difference of play style to consider, however.

"if you want a reference, you can take a look at my stats. it's kinda optimized for solo play though." he shifts his shoulder to disturb noah. "you can take other skills though if you have a meat shield like noah."

and then he brings up the quest. it piques kyle's interests since he had forgone doing quests in favor of brute forcing his grind through mobs since it doubles as item farming.

"but yeah, show us what you got."

"Thanks. I'll consider it." Adrian wasn't much of a player in general, although he'd hoped to make it far enough in B&B to start enjoying the endgame.

"I'm not sure. It popped up while I was looting something." It'd been a mystery quest sort of deal; something off the beaten path. Even the objective was a bit unclear, although it pinpointed the clearing they were gathered in.

Shrugging without much else to offer, he watched as his experience gauge slowly turned blue as his rested bonus began to accumulate ever higher.

"D'you guys plan to be on all night?" It wouldn't surprise him considering how new the game was, but even he'd begun growing weary of playing the game incessantly, day in and day out...

noah swells with pride at his title. meat shield. although it lacks any noble embellishment, the diction is plain and sweet to the point. he flexes his bicep and pats it to emphasize the fact.

"normally i wouldn't mind but," his arm falls to the floor. noah's head rolls lazily on the kyle's arm as he faces adrian, "i gotta head back to my place. landlord's doing their monthly check ups tomorrow and slotted me in the earliest slot, fuuuuck."

in contrast, noah's quest list is relatively checked. there is no sense of order, however. whatever chronology that is intended is forgone for random, coincidental clears.

"but i don't mind stayin' up a bit late. i mean, i usually do without meaning to." he nudges kyle with his elbow before sliding closer to the campfire. "so we can help you out, dude!"

this was news to kyle, but he's not surprised that noah hasn't said anything about this to him. it gets a chuckle out of kyle, as he raises a brow with a head tilt.

"and you're still playing? i'll give you a ride back to rustboro after this if you need it."

he considers noah's roster of pokemon, not remembering anything that can fly him across the mountains between verdanturf and rustboro. the tunnel makes the trip easier, but it wasn't advisable to travel in the middle of the night.

"i can even stay up until sunrise if you're playing that long."

he usually ends in the most normal time if he can, which was 2am at the very least. as long as he wakes up before noon, he considers himself to have slept early enough.

"we can do whatever that is. i've been running out of things to do in the game anyways."

"yeah. i mean," noah peers over at adrian, the flickering flame to casting a fond warmth across his visage. "i don't mind grinding a little for a friend. make the most of it, right?"

reaching up, noah opens the menu. he delivers a party invite to kyle and adrian and waits for the health bar to materialize above their heads.

"alright, let's go!" noah claps his hands together. "boy's night!"

he stands up and brushes off the ashes from his pants. the night is still young, after all.
