Remiel side-eyed mclaren mcflurry . She didn't know it yet, but this was all a test to see whether she truly had what it took to be a part of Rocket. Perhaps she would find it odd that he had lent her such a powerful beast of lighting, and he himself was using a tiny chick. Regardless, Remiel would monitor her command over the bovine closely, and see whether she could keep calm under pressure.

The starting bell rung, and their team was off. Chispas, the tiny Torchic he had trained specifically for this course, burst forward with such great AGILITY that she left small wisps of flame in her tracks. The hurdles ahead of them were large compared to her. She simply ran right under them, propelled greatly by her SPEED BOOST.

mcflurry just seemed nervous, holding the brim of her camo hat between her digits as she eyed the newly-lent zebstrika uneasily.

summer events were supposed to be fun, not -- not this. not being pulled into a race of sorts with -- with who she can only assume are bigger, more elite rockets. this just felt like adding insult to injury. not only were they forcing her to, to race horses when she didn't want to, but making her use a pokemon that... that didn't like her? it just felt wrong.

still, though, the nerves meant she was stuck in place for now. she'd just -- she'd just have to try her best. ugh, what was the zebstrika's name again?

"uh... as-astrape! mcuse, er, use agility! and jump those hurdles, y-yeah! mm..."

the hooved pokemon grunted in disdain, before focusing its attention on the task at hand. as speed rolled through its veins, astrape leapt over the hurdles -- and yet didn't seem to have the same passion and drive as she would with any other trainer.

there's a certain amusement in kyle when he sees this group lead the start of the course. it's like he just needs to follow them where they go and shut down half of his brain since he's just following anyways.

"psych up, franz," kyle tells his smeargle.

its energy matches the torchic once he tries to copy its stats, feeling a certain lightness in his feet as he boosts his speed up. there's a few light hops he makes as he hypes himself up before following after the two other pokemon that went ahead.

kyle follows after his pokemon next, turning his head briefly to see if the fourth participant's ready as well.

The recruit was off to a less than impressive start. Remiel exchanged looks with marcel maeda after he'd noted it. But there wasn't much time to spare before the next obstacle on their track came into view: a field of tires pressed tightly against each other to form a hive-like formation. Remiel sucked in a breath and exhaled, preparing himself for the incessant hopping over each tire ahead.

Chispas, in the meantime, took to the challenge with vigor and a SPEED BOOST. Using her natural AGILITY, she scampered across the tires on her tiny feet and avoided the holes within each one. The smell of burnt rubber wafted in the air.

mcflurry sighed, letting out a whine of dismay. the zebstrika wasn't actually trying -- wasn't going fast enough. of course it wasn't, it just... it didn't like her! so of course it wasn't...

mcflurry dipped her head down, the shade of her hat covering her eyes. she could have, could have been in a... seashore house. or on a hammock, or, or, whatever it is other people did during summer vacation. but because of this rocket job, she had to do... races with a pokemon that didn't like her to pay her bills.

ugh, she didn't want to lose her job. she couldn't afford it. so she cupped her hands around her mouth, her eyebrows furling as she mustered up the loudest voice she could.

"astrape! use... use agility again! and, uh, try to dodge the tires!"

the zebstrika itself snorted, but it complied to the trainer's orders. leaning its head forward, the zebra's hooves zipped through the tires, albeit without as much vigor as the previous torchic.

there wasn't much talking for the two other contenders. kyle takes note of their exchange of glances before he looks at the fourth member. he wonders if they're playing a practical joke on her about keeping quiet and letting her shout for the rest of them instead.

playing along with his assumptions, kyle follows after his smeargle, who had himself psyched up after seeing the torchic, with a shut mouth. it seemed kind of awkward since no one has given him a memo on things, but it's more awkward to be the odd one out.

though he's by no means the fastest in his team, marcel is at least precise. he tackles the tires with relative ease, taking care not to stumble over the obstacle. PSYCHED UP by the competition, his meowstic has similar success.

McLaren's next attempt was marginally better than her first. Remiel supposed that at least some improvement was to be praised. But clearly Astrape was having a difficult time being inspired by its rider's words and force of will.

Deciding, much like Marcel, that there really wasn't anything he could do about it in the current setting, Remiel instead turned his focus back on Chispas for the time being. She was flying right under the next set of hurdles like a rocket. One of them even burst into flames.

mcflurry growled. now it wasn't even about the obstacles, and in the second round of hurdles, she was determined to at least get this over with.

the one thing she could commisserate with the zebstrika was the desire to get this over with. neither wanted to be here, between the trainer and the pokemon. so -- so she'd channel that.

"agility one more time! get this over with or -- or you're stuck with me for the next month!"

and, although that was a lie, it absolutely seemed to spur the zebra on. mcflurry really put her heart into that, her dismay and her despair all channeled into one command, and the zebra whinnied before it put its all into this last stretch.

all kyle could do was to keep on running. his smeargle was already on the course anyways, and telling it anything else might get it distracted when it's already got its head in the game.

kyle hopes he shared his pokemon's enthusiasm, but at least they're reaching the final stretch.
